◈ I Became an Undetected Priest Impersonator ◈

Chapter 13

──────

I Became a Building Owner (2)

Charlotte suddenly drew her sword.

Crackle-!

A streak of light leapt up along the blade, then died away.

The light that had gathered on the sword couldn't hold its shape and vanished quickly, but there was no mistaking what she'd been trying to do.

‘Weapon Enhancement?’

It was clumsy, but that flash was unmistakably the precursor of Weapon Enhancement.

Apparently the reward from just now had pushed Charlotte up a step as well.

"It seems I got a feel for it from that earlier experience."

Charlotte gazed at her sword with a faint smile.

She seemed to think the fight with the orcs had been what triggered her growth.

It was clearly thanks to the experience points, but since she had no way of knowing that, the misunderstanding was understandable.

"Congratulations. You've grown."

"It's all thanks to you, Priest."

It really was thanks to me.

‘Roughly D+ Rank, I'd say.’

She was still far from a complete Weapon Enhancement.

But she seemed to have caught the thread of it, so with one small opportunity, reaching C-Rank wouldn't be far off.

While Charlotte swung her sword a few more times, I looked around.

‘The entrance isn't opening, huh.’

In the Tower, a path to the next zone would have opened after claiming the reward, but here there wasn't even a hint of that.

That seemed to be the difference between a tower and a dungeon.

Still, I'd learned the two were connected and gotten a lead on top of that, so there was nothing to be disappointed about.

"Let's head back."

There was nothing more to check, so I turned around and made my way back to the exit.

We'd been walking for quite a while when Charlotte, apparently curious about something, spoke up.

"By the way, what was it you were checking? I did see the magic stone float up on its own."

"..I'm not sure myself. Perhaps it's a secret of the dungeon, I wonder."

I couldn't possibly tell her about the Tower, so I answered with a vague dodge.

Luckily, Charlotte didn't seem able to imagine that a priest would lie, and looked satisfied.

…

"It's gotten rather late. I'm sorry, but I think we'll have to return tomorrow."

Right after we left the dungeon, Charlotte said, looking up at the sky.

It was already well past noon.

It was indeed an awkward hour to head back to the city, so I nodded in agreement.

"No need to apologize. We needed time to collect the spoils anyway, didn't we? Let's leave unhurriedly tomorrow."

Pulling the fangs from every orc and skinning them all would take no small amount of time, no matter how many soldiers there were.

Even with a few more hours to spare, we would have ended up leaving tomorrow regardless.

"Thank you for understanding."

I nodded and watched the soldiers dressing the orcs.

I was only looking out of simple curiosity about the skinning, but one of the soldiers nearby, perhaps conscious of my gaze, scratched their head and made an excuse.

"Um, Priest, I'm sorry. The orc hides happen to be badly burned, so I doubt we'll get a fair price for them."

"? I don't mind, so please don't worry."

I had no intention of asking for any of it anyway.

If they offered, I'd agonize a little, but in the end I'd surely turn it down for the sake of my image.

"If anything, I feel boundless joy that the soldiers weren't seriously hurt. And wealth holds no value for me, so there's no need to apologize."

For the record, it was a lie from start to finish.

But the soldier seemed to believe this bald-faced lie and was moved.

"I'll do my best to process them as intact as I possibly can!"

"…"

‘Maybe it's because this world hasn't been tainted by the internet, but they're so pure my conscience actually stings.’

And that wasn't the end of it.

"The hides are damaged, but the fangs and the iron weapons the orcs used are fine, so they should fetch a decent price."

"..Sir Charlotte?"

"Even if you have no desire for riches, running a church takes money, so I'll dispose of them as soon as possible and make a donation. Please don't decline and do accept it."

Charlotte had been taken in by the lie as well.

But with her providing a proper justification along with the donation offer, I didn't refuse this time and bowed my head in gratitude.

"..In that case, I won't decline."

‘Nice.’

My conscience might sting, but good things were good things, and I couldn't help it.

Hiding these inner thoughts and playing the devout believer, I returned to my tent.

And there I pressed my hands together in prayer.

"As expected, a truly devout person."

"Our city has been blessed."

Of course, contrary to the soldiers' misconception, I wasn't actually praying.

I was turning on the Gallery to kill time.

[Sent my damn kid to the Academy thanks to the new feature]

[Still makes me sick with envy that Sub-Admins don't pay fees]

[Does Head Admin not give Sub-Admins any more support..]

[This Item Transfer bait is lasting forever, fuck]

‘So the burning Gallery has finally been put out.’

The strange posts that had been practically flooding the board for a while were gone.

The newly hired Sub-Admins seemed to be doing their jobs properly.

‘Worth the hiring.’

So that's why people keep subordinates, I thought.

While I was skimming the Gallery to kill time, a post caught my eye.

It had just made the Recommended Posts and that was why it stood out.

[Recommend This So Head Admin Sees It]

And with a title that openly sought me out, I couldn't help but get curious.

Title: Recommend This So Head Admin Sees It

Author: WantKimchiStew

Thanks, Head Admin.

Ever since I got here, I've never once had any hope for the future.

But thanks to the Item Transfer feature you added last time, I saved up a lump sum, quit the herb-gathering life, and opened a shop.

And I even had money left over, so it looks like I can send my little girl to the Academy too.

Sorry for cursing you out last time when you said you were quitting in a few months.

I know it'll be a shame if the Gallery disappears, but at least I'll be grateful for the rest of my life.

Be blessed.

As I remembered it, the Gallery didn't like long posts, but this one had made it to Recommended as an exception.

I soon saw why when I checked the comments.

[Dude you too? Me too!]

[Item Transfer is damn sweet, though. Plenty of broke Gallerians got back on their feet with that feature]

ㄴ[This is for real]

There turned out to be a surprising number of similar cases, and that was probably how it earned enough sympathy to get up there.

Of course, not every comment was merely sympathetic.

[Summary in 3 lines pls]

ㄴ[OP says they'll suck off Head Admin once]

ㄴ[Oh..]

‘Tch.’

I had no interest in that kind of thing with a man, so I banned the Drifter who'd written that unpleasant summary for a year.

‘Anyway, so it's a thank-you.’

I felt a strange sort of emotion.

After all, that feature had been added for nothing more than giving the Sub-Admins some kind of perk.

Of course, the feeling was only that, and nothing more.

[If I were Head Admin I'd see this, bawl my eyes out in a storm of emotion, and wear the armband for life, for real]

ㄴ[I'm a Head Admin and yeah, that's right]

ㄴ[For real]

‘As if.’

Free labor with no compensation was more than enough with the time I spent playing a priest.

I'd hold the Gallery admin seat only until I'd memorized the theology and scriptures I hadn't yet.

Just until then. No further.

I closed the Gallery and got to my feet, pretending to finish my prayer.

"Um, Priest."

A cautious voice came from the tent entrance.

It was none other than Charlotte's.

"Please, go ahead."

Charlotte should have finished her business in our earlier conversation, so I wondered why she was calling for me and waited for her answer.

"Um, about that dungeon."

"The dungeon, you say?"

Charlotte hesitated for a moment.

Then she said something I hadn't expected.

"Is it perhaps possible to keep it?"

"..?"

It was a baffling question.

Seeing my face, which showed I hadn't understood it at all, Charlotte hurriedly explained herself.

"It's not for any strange purpose! First, please hear me out and promise not to be shocked, Priest."

"? Yes, go ahead."

"You truly mustn't be shocked."

"Understood."

What on earth was she about to say that she needed to build up to it like this?

Charlotte even looked around us once.

She seemed worried someone might overhear.

"..There was a deserted island and a sea inside that dungeon, wasn't there?"

"You saw it yourself, so you know."

Just as my frustration was about to raise my voice, Charlotte finally spat out the main point.

"Apparently some of the soldiers who like fishing secretly went into the dungeon and fished."

"I'll pretend I didn't see it, so feel free to discipline them as you see fit."

"No, that's not the important part. The soldiers actually caught fish."

"..?"

Well.

It's the seaside, so of course they'd catch something.

She was speaking of the obvious as though it were some great secret.

At my reaction, Charlotte beat her chest in frustration.

"It means that in our domain, which is as landlocked as a land can be, we could eat saltwater fish instead of freshwater fish!"

"…"

It still didn't sink in.

If anything, I'd never been very fond of seafood, so I couldn't understand why Charlotte was so worked up over a bit of it.

But Charlotte's next words finally made me understand.

"It means we could distribute fresh seafood inland!"

‘No wonder she's like this.’

All the more so for a domain without a single decent specialty product, so it was only natural that Charlotte, the lord's daughter, would make a fuss.

The problem was that Charlotte had probably asked because she took the priest for a learned man, but I knew almost nothing about dungeons.

No matter how desperately she asked, there was no way a solution would come out of me.

‘..No, wait. Maybe there is a way after all.’

I recalled how the dungeon hadn't realized right away that its boss had died.

If I could fool the dungeon the way I had then, what Charlotte wanted might not be impossible.

"There's one method worth trying."

"Oh!"
