◈ I Stream as a Hobby ◈
Chapter 9: Outwind
──────
As a proud variety-game VTuber, I'd played all kinds of games on stream.
My favorites were the ones that gave you plenty of freedom.
Historical strategy games, for example, or Leore.
I mostly enjoyed games where every match played out differently.
Outwind, which I'd launched after four rounds of Augment ARAM, was another game like that.
[You encountered bandits on a trading journey. Your friends and family died, and you barely...]
The story began with bandits attacking every wagon in our caravan during a trading trip.
The tutorial involved barely making it back to the village with one friend, completely broke.
[Your parents are dead, so now you have to pay your family's debts!]
I'd only just made it home, and this was what the villagers had to say.
"Hmm?"
-???
-Wait, why do I have to pay that
-Is that how this world works??
-Really wanna ditch this village
"Well, it is the Middle Ages..."
It was hard to understand with modern sensibilities, but it wasn't an outrageous thing to say in a medieval setting.
Of course...
"I don't actually have to pay this, right?"
-Yep, you can just run
-Let's ditch this place lmao
I had no intention of quietly paying up.
Wasn't leaving the village the standard move here?
What was the point of hanging around the starter village? I was a hero. I had bigger places to go.
"Leave the past behind and take a step forward..."
[Wayo! Don't worry. I'll try to persuade the villagers to wait until you've earned the money. And if you're willing...]
Fortunately, the village chief calmed the adults down.
The chief even offered to pay my debts if I agreed to be adopted.
Was this some kind of branching choice?
More importantly, our village chief was seriously generous.
-Niiiice lmao
-Please adopt me
-Now that's a Hokage lmao
"Hmm... Now I'm getting attached to this village."
-Fr
-Lord Kage seems pretty cool
-Why not just get adopted??
"Before that, let's look around the village and get a feel for the game."
How many different games had I played since becoming a variety-game streamer?
Even if a game didn't explain much, I could get the hang of this stuff in a few minutes.
From the viewers' backseating, it sounded like I should start by looting items around the village, selling them, and buying some basic equipment.
"Oh, there's stuff here."
Crash!! Clang!!
I smashed the storage jars at the empty houses found in every village, then searched the shelves for anything I could sell.
For the record, looting an occupied house would turn the residents hostile, so I had to be careful about that.
-Oh no, that was Boksun's surgery fund
-You little brat! What are the villagers supposed to live on if you take everything?!
"Someone's gotta save the world~"
I'm the hero~ I've got a world to save~
-Lmaoooooooo
-This asshole's supposed to be a hero...?
-Leave the emergency cash in the wardrobe alone 😢
-Upvote if the village elders had the right idea...
Crash! Clang!!
And so I smashed jars and windows.
After kicking beds aside and cleaning out even the silver coins underneath, I'd collected enough money for decent armor and weapons.
"What weapon do people usually use?"
-If you're new, shut up and go sword-and-board
-Just take a shield
"Hmm. Oh, okay."
After listening to the viewers' advice, I bought a greatsword from the shop.
Nothing said fantasy like a greatsword.
-Fucking bitch lmao
-Knew you wouldn't listen
-You do know you're on Hardcore, right??
For the record, I'd picked Hardcore difficulty.
If you died, your character was deleted instead of respawning. A variety-game streamer had to be up for at least that much.
"How many worlds have I saved? And you still doubt me?"
-Fun fact) You've tanked even more games than that
-Why's this fucker so full of baseless confidence??
-Greatswords are seriously fucking hard
"Just have a little faith."
-I bet all my points, you fuck
-That's the spirit~ Let's go lmao
-No underdog-betting idiots still believe in that bitch, right??
I'd also opened an online gambling den when I started the game.
[Believe in Wayo vs. Don't Believe in Wayo]
If my character died today, the second side won. If I survived to the end, the people who'd bet on the first side would rake in the points.
And I really meant rake them in. The payout was dozens of times their bets.
"Such a lack of faith."
-It's your first run, of course you're gonna die lmao
-I'll shit my pants if you survive this
-We've seen you throw games plenty of times
"You think this is the Rift?"
Odds that lopsided made me want to prove them wrong.
I rested the greatsword on my shoulder and turned toward the village entrance.
"All right, let's head out."
-Please play it safe... I bet a whole year's worth of watching
-Isn't backing the underdog here an IQ problem??
"Just watch. We'll see who wins."
Seriously, what was their problem with greatswords?
From what I'd seen, the combat system was similar to a Soulslike.
As someone who'd been a Knight of Ash, I didn't think a greatsword looked all that difficult to use.
And so I boldly ventured outside the village.
A wide field stretched before me, with a rough road barely wide enough for a single wagon.
Two bandits stood there as if they were part of the scenery.
-Oh, bandits
-Lure them over one at a time and kill them
I strode straight over.
[Alishyungka! Ireun!]
[De! Ureui!]
I approached the bandits as they spouted some gibberish, then immediately hit the attack button.
Whooosh.
With a slow, heavy motion, my greatsword swept sideways.
And then, the bandits...
Swish!
"Uh."
-??
-What was that lmao
-I said lure them one at a time
-They can dodge too??
I'd expected to open the fight by hitting both of them.
Instead, a bandit slipped backward out of the way.
"...This isn't going to be easy, is it?"
Was the combat AI actually good?
Normally, the unwritten rule was that trash mobs like these didn't dodge.
-Told you to take a sword and shield lmao
-You have to fight 1v1 in this game, no 2v1s
-Even with armor, losing health will make things rough later
-Yeah, keep doing that lmao go go go
I gathered myself as joy and despair crossed paths in chat.
Well, I still had better equipment.
The bandits wore nothing but cloth, while I'd looted every empty house in the village to get scale armor and an iron helmet.
Plus a steel greatsword, no less.
Even if the AI knew how to dodge, the result was practically decided.
"Phew..."
And sure enough, the fight ended quickly.
"That wasn't much."
I looked down at the ban/dits sprawled on the ground.
They'd been pretty fierce, but they were exactly the sort of enemies you'd expect right outside the village.
-Niiiice lmao
-Wait, is this really your first time??
-Guess all that variety-game experience counts for something
-You favorite-backing haters coming to your senses? lmao
"All right, where to next?"
-Gotta go get revenge at the bandit camp
-Get revenge and bring back the trading company token, and they'll cancel your village debt
"Hmm. I can go there now, right?"
-Start around the edges and whittle them down
-You need to farm more gear
-Don't think you can just charge straight through
-There's a boss
"A bandit camp, huh? Sounds exciting."
I spoke as I rummaged through the corpses of the bandits I'd just killed.
These bandits had robbed our entire caravan.
There had to be loads of valuables in their camp, right?
-This fucker isn't listening, ha lmaooo
-Excuse me, this is my first time gambling. Can I get a refund...?
-Please let us place our bets again
"Oh, what's this?"
[Flame Cloth]
While I was looting and enjoying the reactions in chat, I found a piece of red cloth on a corpse.
-Read it, dumbass
-Rub that on your sword and it catches fire
"Oh, so using this gives me elemental damage?"
-Yep, fire enchantment
-Make sure you carry those around
-Enemies get really tanky later, so you need stuff like that
"Okay, I'll pick them all up."
How could I say no to an enchantment?
Besides, a flaming sword was every gamer's dream.
"Not a bad haul."
After looting the bandits, I'd picked up two antidotes, one Flame Cloth, some rags, and a little food.
"Now that we're stocked up, shall we head straight to the bandit camp?"
-Go go go
-Ha... I give up
-Please take it slow...
I had a world to save. There was no time to drag my feet.
I opened the map and ran straight for the bandit camp.
"That didn't take long."
The bandit camp was pretty close to the village.
In the distance, I could see a wooden palisade and smoke rising from a large bonfire.
-Start by thinning out the edges
-There's an elite mob inside, so be careful;;
-All right, time to get wiped out lmao
Honestly, the place looked sizable, but I didn't feel particularly threatened.
After all, I'd already seen what the bandits could do.
Their numbers might be a problem, but they were still just people in cloth armor carrying sharp objects.
And more importantly... weren't they early-game trash mobs?
As a hero who'd saved countless worlds, I had no reason to be scared.
-Uh, where are you going
-Not the front gate, go around the back
-I bet all my points!!
So, despite the patriotic underdog bettors clinging to my legs and begging me to stop, I walked straight toward the front gate.
[Alsta!]
[U! Alseura!]
The bandits at the entrance ran toward me, spouting gibberish. Judging by their shabby spears, they were probably gate guards.
"Come at me, all of you!"
-Oh please, I said start around the edges
-Yeah, a real man charges straight in lmao
-All right, next run~~
The fight began amid the viewers' screams, mockery, and anticipation. It didn't last very long.
"I thought I was gonna die, you assholes...!"
-Can't believe you just brawled with them
-You'd be dead without the armor you bought by looting the whole village
-Clothes really do make the person
That was because I'd simply taken their spear thrusts and split their heads open with my greatsword.
"Oww... That hurt."
I checked my items while gulping down the potions I'd just looted from the corpses.
After taking one hit, I'd thought I could handle the damage and decided to slug it out. It had been more dangerous than expected.
-Thought my heart was gonna stop lmao
-So close lmao
-I bet six months' worth of points on you, please...
"Why would you put six months' worth on the underdog?"
That person wasn't in their right mind either.
I'd nearly died just moments ago.
Still, this approach was good for conserving stamina.
This game had stamina as well as health.
Rolling, the all-purpose dodge move, used a lot of stamina, so I'd taken a bit of a risk.
They outnumbered me. Dodging every single attack would only make things worse by leaving me without enough stamina to attack.
-Good thing you got two potions, seriously
-Potions don't drop often
"Really? Is this beginner's luck?"
I tossed the empty glass bottle onto the ground.
For the record, I'd drunk both potions I'd found. It took both of them to get me back to full health.
"I think I've killed quite a few now..."
With my health restored, I looked around and headed into the camp.
A few more small fry had come running out during the fight with the guards, and I'd killed them all too.
That had left the inside pretty empty.
"This place is no big deal. You were making such a fuss."
-Fr lmao
-These Outwind coaches are overreacting like crazy lmao
-No, the real threat's inside...
"Really? It's still just a bandit."
More importantly, the game didn't seem as hard as all their fuss suggested.
It was surprisingly manageable. Had I just done a good job stealing money in the village at the start?
Still, I figured it would've been a lot harder in the cloth armor the game gave you by default.
Just as I ventured deeper inside...
Clank, clank.
From farther in, somewhere in the shade, came a metallic rattle.
"Uh."
I turned toward the noise, and something gleaming stepped out of the shadows.
It wore a shining suit of silver full plate armor that reflected the sunlight...
[Bandit Knight]
Yes, it was a bandit.
One that might as well have been a knight.
"...How am I supposed to kill that?"
-??? What's that??
-AXEEEEEE
-Told you to clear the edges and farm gear first;;
-Run right now, fighting that is way too much for you
I glanced at the traits beside its name and saw that it had very high physical defense.
Even the greatsword that had reliably split enemy heads until now looked like it would struggle against that defense. Just as I wondered whether I really should run...
-How about using that Flame Cloth from earlier?
-Favorite bettor) Doesn't it seem beatable with decent mechanics??
-Wayo, this is my first underdog bet. Please run...
"Oh, right."
The chat reminded me of the cloth I'd picked up earlier.
Right. I had that item.
If this guy was going to be a coward and wear armor, I had no choice but to rely on equipment too.
[Hal! Saureu!]
Watching the Bandit Knight stride toward me, I pulled the Flame Cloth out of my bag.
-You're actually fighting it??
-Is this gonna work??
-Please think this through...
Ha. Why was everyone so scared?
Had having points on the line turned them into cowards?
"Watch closely... And don't tell anyone."
Fwoosh.
When I wrapped the Flame Cloth around my sword, flames rose from the sharp blade.
-?!!!
-Niiiice lmao
-You're seriously fighting this??
-They'll make me a captain~~
"Bankai."
-My points, fuck;;
-Now that's what I'm talking about lmao
-This fucker's got spirit 👍👍
-The swagger's unreal lmao
High defense?
Then I'd just burn it to ash.

Hokage is the title of the Hidden Leaf Village's leader in Naruto.
The final exchange references Ikkaku's Bankai reveal in Bleach, including his request for secrecy and his wish to avoid being made a captain.
