Dohyeok lunged for the doors.

"That's me! That's my stop!"

Mu-hyeon's arm came across his chest like a station gate.

Dohyeok hit it at a full step and stopped dead. Dohyeok is not a small person. The arm did not move.

"Read the wall."

"The voice said Daeheung! My ticket says Daeheung!"

"Read. The wall."

Dohyeok read the wall.

White tile. Old blue letters, glazed into the wall of the platform outside.

SAEJAE.

The chime ran down to nothing. The doors slid shut three centimeters from the toe of his sneaker.

Saejae station sat on the other side of the glass, lit and empty, looking exactly like a mouth that had just closed.

The train pulled out.

"...It said Daeheung." Dohyeok stepped back from the doors like they'd gotten hot. "Everyone heard it say Daeheung."

"Everyone heard it," Chae-a said. "The wall disagreed."

"So the wall's broken."

"Tile doesn't talk. The slot talks." She was already turned, looking down the length of the car.

The conductor stood at the far end, white gloves folded over the lever punch, egg-smooth face angled toward nothing. The slot where a mouth should be breathed. In, and out.

"Rule five," Chae-a said. "This train does not announce its stops truthfully."

"It told us the rule," Baek-gu said. "Right there on the board. It told us it was going to lie."

"It doesn't lie," I said.

Everyone looked at me.

My heart was going too fast for how still I was standing. Not the game. The habit. Four hundred and twelve chapters and not one of them goes underground, so I had nothing here, nothing but the one thing I knew about this city's Stories from the outside.

Say the sayable part. Carefully.

"The kindergarten. The chalkboard rules. Everything it promised, it kept. It leaves things out. It doesn't say false things." I swallowed. "The board upstairs said the rules are the rules. If the announcements were just noise, rule five wouldn't say truthfully. It would say the train does not announce its stops. The word's doing work."

"Meaning what," Minseo said. Flat. Her first words since boarding.

"Meaning the announcement isn't random. It's wrong in a way that holds."

Chae-a snapped her fingers. "A pattern. Okay. Baek-gu. You ride this city all day. Line Four, from Gyoha, in order. Slow."

Baek-gu closed his eyes. His hands moved little handlebar movements while he said it, like the list lived in the bike and not in him.

"Gyoha. Saejae. Daeheung. Dalbit. Wonseo. Haedong. Myodong. Cheonmun. Hwagok. End of the line."

"Again," Chae-a said. "Haru, write it."

Haru was already writing it on the gray unreadable ad panel with a marker from her windbreaker pocket, because of course she had a marker in her windbreaker pocket. Nine names, top to bottom. The marker squeaked.

"Okay." Dohyeok leaned in. "It's backwards. That's the trick, right? It reads the line backwards. We hear Hwagok, that means Gyoha, we hear Cheonmun, that means, uh."

"Then the first stop would've been announced as Hwagok," Chae-a said. "End of the line, read backwards, first. It said Daeheung."

"...Okay, not backwards."

"Not backwards."

Silence. The rails clicked underneath. Somewhere ahead of us, a tunnel light swept through the car, slow, like a page being turned past a lamp.

I stared at Haru's list.

Gyoha. We boarded there.

Saejae. We stopped there.

And standing in Saejae, the voice said Daeheung.

Daeheung is the next one down.

...Oh.

"It's ahead," I said.

"What?"

"It's not lying about the line. It's lying about the where. We were standing in Saejae and it named Daeheung. Daeheung comes right after Saejae." I put my finger on the list, one name, then the name under it. "The voice names the next station up the line. Not the one you're at. The one after it."

Chae-a stared at the list for exactly one second.

"One ahead," she said. "It's always one ahead."

"So it never says your stop when you're at your stop," Haru said slowly. "It says your stop one early. To pull you out the doors at the wrong station."

"And when you ARE at your station," Chae-a said, "it's already naming the next one."

Dohyeok raised both hands. "Wait. Wait wait. So when do I get off?"

"When it says the station one past yours." Chae-a took the marker out of Haru's hand and drew a hard arrow from each name to the one below it. "Your signal isn't your name. Your signal is your neighbor. Ticket says Daeheung? You move when the voice says Dalbit."

"That's insane. I'm supposed to hear the wrong station and jump."

"You're supposed to hear the wrong station and trust the map." She looked around the car. "Everyone. Signals. Now, while it's quiet. Dohyeok, Daeheung. You move on Dalbit. Say it back."

"I move on Dalbit." He said it like a man biting something sour.

"Baek-gu."

"Wonseo." He tapped the list. "So I move on Haedong. Fine. Company's been telling me for years I never get off where I should."

"Me. Haedong. I move on Myodong." Chae-a wrote her own name beside it, small and neat. "Minseo."

"Myodong," Minseo said. "I move on Cheonmun."

Then she looked at the window, at the black tunnel going by, and said the other thing in the same voice she'd have used for a blood pressure reading.

"Myodong is the hospital stop. The train wants to take me exactly where I already go."

Nobody had anything for that. Haru opened her mouth, and for once closed it again.

"Seojin," Chae-a said.

I turned my ticket over in my pocket one more time, like the name might have changed. It hadn't. Warm little rectangle, plain print.

"Cheonmun. I move on Hwagok."

"Huh." Haru held her ticket up next to my face, so close I went cross-eyed. CHEONMUN. "We match. Either that means something or it means nothing."

"Those are the two options, yeah."

"I'm deciding it means the train thinks we're a set." She pocketed it. "Like chopsticks."

"Mu-hyeon," Chae-a said. "Yours."

Mu-hyeon was watching the far end of the car, axe head resting on the floor between his boots, hands stacked on the handle.

"Later."

"The whole point is that we map everyone before"

"Later," he said, not louder, and something in it closed the subject the way the doors had closed on Dohyeok's shoe.

Chae-a's jaw set. She filed it. You could watch her file it.

"...Fine. Six mapped. Nobody moves on their own name. Ever. Your name in that voice means stay."

Clack. Clack.

The sound came from the far end of the car.

The conductor had begun to walk.

White gloves, unhurried, the lever punch held the way a man holds something he has held for forty years. It moved up the aisle with the roll of the train, never touching a pole, never swaying past its own line.

"Rule four," Baek-gu said quietly. "It collects fares."

"Nobody hand it a ticket," Chae-a said. "Punched is spent. Spent opens no doors."

"What if it asks?"

"It has never asked anything," Mu-hyeon said. "Don't start a conversation."

The conductor stopped four rows up.

At an empty seat.

It faced the empty blue seat the way it would face a passenger. It bent, very slightly, courteous. The slot in its face opened, breathed, said nothing.

Then the punch came down on the empty air above the seat.

CHUNK.

A tiny crescent of paper fell.

It see-sawed down, side to side, the lazy way paper falls, and landed on the seat. One little half-moon of white. Punched out of nothing.

The conductor straightened, satisfied, and moved on to the next empty row.

"...There's no one there," Dohyeok whispered. "It punched no one. It's doing rounds on empty seats, that's, okay, that's fine, that's just how it was printed, right? Like a wind-up toy. It punches paper that isn't there."

"He isn't voiding paper."

Minseo said it gently. That was the terrible part. She said it the way you tell a family in a hallway, gently, both hands still, nothing in her face at all.

"He's voiding the passenger. That seat isn't empty because no one sat there. It's empty because the fare got collected. You don't miss your stop on this train." She watched the crescent slide off the seat as the car swayed. "You stop being someone who has a stop."

The car went very quiet.

I counted the seats. I couldn't help it. Rows and rows of them, into the next car and the next, all the way down the line, all of them empty, all of them ridden.

CHUNK. Another crescent, two cars' distance in my spine.

The train began to slow.

Light came up in the windows, tile-white. A platform slid alongside. Blue glazed letters rose out of the dark, and every one of us read them at the same time.

DAEHEUNG.

The real one. Dohyeok's actual, printed, warm-in-his-pocket stop, rising outside the glass exactly one station after the voice had promised it.

The slot opened at the end of the car.

"Now arriving, Dalbit. Dalbit station. The doors will open on your right."

Dalbit. The name one past his.

The signal.

Dohyeok looked at Chae-a.

"GO," she said.

He went. Three steps to the doors, fast, and behind him, unhurried, the white glove came down.
