Wizard of the Abyss

[Translator – Aren]

Chapter 151 - Past (1)

Becoming one with the Abyssal Sea was an extremely difficult-to-describe sensation.

If I were forced to describe it in a single sentence… It felt like becoming a colossal giant.

I could look down from an omniscient vantage point and understand how the lives in this cramped world spoke, feared, panicked, grieved, and rejoiced. If I wished, I could crush them to death with a single finger, and no matter how much I thought about it, I couldn’t imagine them being able to harm me.

It’s always been like that. An overwhelming sense of omnipotence.

I felt it even in the state of partial fusion, but when I was like this, a certain thought would sometimes surface.

Was this my original self?

This tiny body that suffered from a single shallow breath seemed like nothing more than an incomplete lump of flesh. Something seemed completely logical to discard.

This feeling was harder to endure than any burden.

Because it felt right. Because it felt like if I just let go and entrusted myself to it, I could escape the burdens of the Abyssal Sea.

And I probably could.

"Ooh…”

Gritting my teeth, I resisted and pressed myself harder against the ground.

-Crack!

I crushed everything.

"Indeed, it seems I misjudged you.”

Great Void’s voice didn’t stop.

I didn’t care. I continued to brutally press down on this place he called paradise, destroying it.

"Let’s see how long you can keep hiding.”

"..."

It seemed Great Void had prepared an enormous number of spare bodies within this space called paradise. They were likely linked to his world. If he’d used this level of power in the real world, the burdens would have killed him, but here, where he didn’t have to worry about burdens, he must have judged that it wouldn’t cause any problems.

He had thought it through and figured out that if he remained unseen, he could survive even within the Abyssal Sea…

A correct judgment. But he made two mistakes.

First. I, too, was not bound by my burdens.

—Second. By fleeing like this, he had pretty much admitted that he had no way to face me directly.

"If I crush everything, you’ll have no choice but to come out.”

A space that made one immortal? Doesn’t matter.

Immortality meant nothing if you were crushed.

If he revived, I would just keep grinding him down until he couldn’t anymore.

-Thud, crack, thud!

"Now then, how many are left?”

Without resting for even a second, I continued to press down upon paradise, searching for Great Void’s hidden bodies and smashing them to pieces.

Everything had an end. There was no way he could have unfolded a burdenless space like this infinitely.

I could feel Great Void’s voice fading gradually.

"...Not much time left.”

"Bullshit."

I let out a hollow laugh as I replied.

"You don’t look that desperate for someone who hasn’t even tried to counterattack once.”

"I am desperate, which is why I find it quite difficult to answer right now.”

"This is your goal, isn’t it? You think I wouldn’t see that?”

Great Void didn’t answer.

But my Tide Sense didn’t miss the meaningful smile that spread across the face of the body I had just crushed.

"In this space, you’re hoping I get devoured by the Abyssal Sea.”

From the beginning, the reason he provoked me and never once counterattacked—

The reason he dragged me into a space where I could fully unleash the Abyssal Sea was painfully obvious.

He had chosen this place deliberately as if to tell me to just go wild.

Until I finally gave up.

Until I indulged in this omnipotence until I became so intoxicated, leading to complete fusion.

"You think I wouldn’t notice that you’re trying to turn me into something like Puppet? Just another phenomenon with nothing but memories left?”

"If I could, persuading you would be the best option.”

Great Void, still tens of thousands of meters away, reached out a hand toward where I was.

"After hearing my story, has anything in your thinking changed?”

"No.”

-Crunch!

That bloodbath was my answer.

"...Ugh."

And—as the range of my Tide Sense and destruction widened even further, the dizzying sensation spreading through my mind grew more intense.

The sheer bliss of transforming into a being one…no, dozens of levels higher in existence. Something so overwhelming that bodily pleasure seemed vulgar in comparison.

It was nearly impossible to resist. This was nothing like when I was using the Abyssal Sea before. I was now trying to dominate an entire region completely.

And it was actually working.

Clutching my head, I forced down the pink haze flooding my thoughts, and hunted down even more of Great Void’s bodies.

"I just can’t understand. The behavior you call resistance is just so…foolish.”

-Crack!

"Why would you resist cutting the rope strangling your neck?”

-Grind.

"Sever it. Become complete. Free yourself from the pain.”

"Hey, you insane bastard—”

There were so many hidden bodies.

I had crushed nearly a hundred by now, but he was still fine.

"This is all meaningless."

–Crunch

"If you accept the natural order, you could, right now..."

"I said I wanted to escape the Abyssal Sea. When did I ever say I wanted to become one with it? If that’s how I escape, I’d rather die.”

I snarled the words at him, clearly trying to threaten him. Great Void shook his head, as if there was nothing else he could do.

"Then keep going. Watching how long you can endure will be quite amusing in its own right.”

"I was planning to anyway. You heard me. You made a mistake.”

I clenched and released my fingers, still tingling with pleasure, forcing myself to focus.

"You shouldn’t have brought me here."

"Yes, the Abyssal Sea is indeed a terrifying world. I fully understand that.”

"No, you don’t understand at all."

"...?"

He didn’t realize it.

That this wasn’t all the Abyssal Sea was.

When I looked up, the sky was gone, replaced by a lightless, murky ocean.

"...You can’t even begin to measure it.”

Why couldn’t you move?

The currents roared. Gentle streams became violent torrents.

The torrents dragged the sea itself. Collapsed currents birthed new waves.

Great Void tried to do something.

But he was far too late.

-Ruuumble!

The sound of thunder split the Abyssal Sea—

and that overwhelming mass, quietly crushing everything beneath its surface, began to move forward.

"Cough…”

I immediately coughed up blood. Even though I had touched a realm close to omnipotence, I hadn’t reached it completely, which was probably why the backlash slowly crept in, squeezing my body.

Of course. Even an omnipotent god wouldn’t have easily caused this scene to unfold.

"Damn it.”

Great Void whispered, watching his paradise be crushed.

At first, the Abyssal Sea merely moved, then it started to accelerate gradually.

The broken currents naturally demanded it.

I observed him with my Tide Sense, lying flat on the ground, laughing as hard as I could.

"Hey, did you remember to install a breakwater in this paradise of yours?”

To anyone else, it would have looked like an invisible force reshaping terrain, flattening mountains, and so on.

But I could clearly see a colossal wave.

A tsunami within the Abyssal Sea.

“...I never anticipated something like this.”

Great Void lowered his hand and let out a long sigh.

It seemed like he could see it too.

The sheer size of it. Enough to devour even the clouds in the sky.

The tsunami destroyed everything equally.

Hidden Great Voids, mountains, rivers, deer.

Nothing remained where it passed.

-Ruumble...!!

After spending about 5 minutes catching my breath, staring at the wide sandy beach that had once been a grassy meadow—

"Three Calamities…truly worlds of a different order.”

Great Void appeared, tearing open the air.

The bitterness on his face and the missing fingers told me everything I needed to know.

This was his essence. If I killed him now, everything would end—

"Cough."

But for some reason, my Abyssal Sea began to fade.

It was the same strange ability I had felt the first time we had met. The one that completely erased the power of the Abyssal Sea.

Gritting my teeth, I began to compress wind, as he looked down at me with something close to pity.

"Stop. In this world, your abilities must follow the strict laws of Heaven.”

"...What?"

"That’s the type of world you are in. You broke its laws, and you have paid the price for it. This isn’t merely another place. This is another world entirely.”

"That’s-"

I looked around. Apparently, this place wasn’t just on another continent or something, but in a completely different world.

That was probably why I was able to do something as absurd as use my power without suffering from the burdens. It wasn’t the power of Great Void, but the power of this world—I had simply been summoned to this place by force.

"Wait, then when we first met—"

"You thought you were in some sort of ruins, but that place was also within Heaven. I led you there.”

This absolute bastard.

Deception really was his natural state.

Still, telling me this now meant one thing. That I could prepare for it next time—

And it also meant Great Void had finally made up his mind.

"Will you truly continue to cling to this human body?”

He looked at me almost as if begging.

"You are a world. You already are. Clinging to a human form will only bring suffering, then annihilation… You know that, don’t you? Then why…?”

"Haah…”

Unfortunately, the moment I was summoned here, my defeat had already been decided.

My only consolation was that he hadn’t won either.

I hadn’t lost to the world itself, so I could answer with a strangely calm heart.

"I get what you want.”

"And?"

"It just made my resolve firmer.”

I used to think Scarlet Abyss was just a group of lunatics.

But they weren’t.

Instead they were a group that wanted to look like lunatics, but actually were a sophisticated, precise terrorist organization.

I couldn’t coexist with these kinds of people.

The moment had come for me to add another purpose beside escaping the Abyssal Sea to my being.

"After doing some intern work, I kind of just want to kill you all.”

"What a shame."

Great Void pressed his fingers to his temple and raised his hand.

"So how long must I wait this time—”

"There’s no need."

-Crack!

"...Hmm?"

As Great Void stared at me in confusion, I drove a current straight into my own heart.

It didn’t hurt as much as I thought. I just couldn’t breathe. And in that state, I still forced myself to press out some words.

"I’ll—soon..."

In my shaking vision, I saw Great Void’s face. Bitter, regretful, perhaps even pained.

"I’ll be coming for you."

He—

"Of course, that must not be allowed.”

sent me off with those twisted words.
