Chapter 2: Silver Spoon Starting
──────
The Black Horned Rabbit charging at me looked almost like a bullet.
"What the fuck?!"
I reflexively raised my arms to protect myself, but my awkward stance didn't help at all.
The Horned Rabbit's forehead knocked my arms aside, and its thick horn drove into my solar plexus.
"Urgh!"
A Horned Rabbit was about the size of a large dog, so when it rammed into me with all its strength, I was sent sprawling backward.
Fuck, a Horned Rabbit that attacks first? None of the guides mentioned a monster like that.
No, more importantly, I'm dying!
"Ugh, huff!"
Cold sweat poured down my face as I frantically felt around where the Horned Rabbit had hit me.
There wasn't a wound anywhere. I'd been stabbed with that much speed and force, but I was completely fine.
Only after confirming I wasn't injured did I remember my Status Window.
HP: 91/100
My displayed HP had gone down. That headbutt had taken 9 HP off.
'Oh, right.'
Once again, I only remembered the Tower of Trials' basic system after the fact.
The Tower of Trials used a system very similar to a game. Stats, skills, even HP.
When an enemy attacked you, your HP went down, and as long as it didn't hit zero, you could never suffer a fatal injury. It was basically a shield.
I'd known that before entering the Tower of Trials, but I'd been so startled that I'd completely forgotten.
"I-I thought I was dead."
I wiped the cold sweat from my forehead and got to my feet.
The Black Horned Rabbit that had rammed me was no longer hopping around. It was glaring at me.
It looked like it was waiting for a chance to charge again. Like I'd let it.
"You little shit!"
I charged at the Black Horned Rabbit and launched a powerful soccer kick.
-Squeak!
My Wooden Sword had broken, so I'd just hit it however I could, but this worked better than expected. Was this the difference two points of Strength made?
I followed up the soccer kick with more kicks. The Black Horned Rabbit kept squeaking as I battered it around.
There were no damage numbers, so I couldn't tell whether my attacks were actually working.
Then the Black Horned Rabbit's eyes seemed to flash, and it charged again.
"Urgh!"
I'd gotten hit when it charged from far away, so there was no way I could dodge it when it leaped at me from this close.
I tumbled backward hard, but once again, my HP had only dropped a little. I wasn't injured.
"Hyah!"
I got up right away and launched another soccer kick! The Black Horned Rabbit squeaked again!
Getting stabbed by its horn had scared me at first, but once I actually fought it, it wasn't much different from any other Horned Rabbit.
It was still just a low-level monster, after all. Be a good little pile of experience points.
-Squeak! Squeak! Squeeeak...!
After I beat the hell out of it for a while, the Black Horned Rabbit finally collapsed.
[Black Horned Rabbit Pelt]
[Horned Rabbit Horn]
The Horned Rabbit had dropped two items. Without even checking the loot, I headed straight back to the village.
Then I opened the Open Community and started searching for information on Black Horned Rabbits.
* * *
-Welcome to the Tower of Trials Open Community!
[Floor 1 Guide for Tower of Trials Newbies Ver. Real Final]
[Monster Information for Floor 1 Areas (Revised)]
[Must Read! Basic Guide for Newbie Challengers, Part 1]
[Basic Interface Guide]
I dug through every early-game guide on the Open Community, but there wasn't much mention of Black Horned Rabbits.
Still, I'd spent plenty of time scratching my belly at home while wasting my life on the internet. My search skills managed to dig up the information.
Not from the repeatedly revised guides, but from an old guide that had been buried ages ago.
[Monster Information for Floor 1 Areas (Old Version)]
[Black Horned Rabbit: Appears after killing 10 or more Horned Rabbits consecutively in the plains area. Has twice the HP of a regular Horned Rabbit, is a first-strike monster, and always drops a horn.]
The reason the newest guides had no information about Black Horned Rabbits was in the comments.
[As of February 17, 2017, it has been confirmed that they no longer spawn in any existing Tower of Trials.]
That was it. The Black Horned Rabbit was an extinct monster that no longer spawned in other Towers of Trials.
The monsters and resources in the Tower of Trials were finite.
All the good hunting grounds, quests, and items had already been claimed by the first-generation Hunters during the chaotic period when the world was turned upside down. Nothing was left.
But I was the only Challenger in Tower 2661, so all those finite resources were still here in abundance.
Wasn't this incredible?
It meant I could monopolize treasures in the Labyrinth Area and limited-quantity rare items all by myself.
Maybe my life wasn't completely fucked after all.
* * *
"Have a nice day!"
I walked outside after receiving the weapon shop NPC's emotionless farewell.
I was holding a newly purchased Wooden Sword. It was a [Sturdy Wooden Sword], bought with the money I'd gotten from selling Horned Rabbit Pelts to the shop.
I'd originally planned to buy a regular Wooden Sword, but the Black Horned Rabbit Pelt was a fairly expensive item, so I'd made more money than expected.
It cost twice as much as a normal Wooden Sword, but it had more than twice the Durability. If I could afford it, buying the Sturdy Wooden Sword was the obvious choice.
Newbies in other Towers of Trials didn't buy Wooden Swords like these in the first place, but I didn't feel jealous over that.
I was going to make far more money than other Challengers from now on, so there was no reason to begrudge this kind of spending.
"Mm, I like it."
Maybe because it was expensive, it felt better in my hand. I was looking forward to seeing how satisfyingly I could beat the shit out of Horned Rabbits with it.
I returned to the fields and resumed hunting Horned Rabbits.
According to the Open Community guides, just completing all the Horned Rabbit-related quests given by village NPCs would get you to level 5 in no time.
On top of that, I'd received Black Horned Rabbit-related quests that couldn't be obtained in other Towers of Trials.
The Tower of Trials' limited elements didn't just apply to monsters and items. They applied to quests too.
Apparently, there were limited quests that could no longer be accepted after being completed a certain number of times. The rewards for those quests were generally pretty good.
I searched the Open Community for quest-related information, and sure enough, the Black Horned Rabbit hunting quest gave much better rewards than most other quests.
Enough to make up for the money I'd spent on the Wooden Sword and still leave plenty over. I'd be way better off than other Challengers at my level.
The guides said not to enter the Labyrinth Area until reaching level 3, but at this rate, I'd hit level 3 with room to spare.
When I first received the invitation, I naturally thought I'd get carried by Rankers and become a low-rank Hunter.
But if I grew by claiming all these limited early-game resources, couldn't I at least become a B-rank Hunter, if not S-rank or A-rank?
No, maybe I could find a hidden piece and grow all the way to S-rank?
"Hyah!"
With my wishful thinking burning bright, I threw myself into hunting Horned Rabbits.
* * *
Fueled by my overflowing motivation, I cleared every Horned Rabbit quest in no time.
The only quests left in the fields were repeatable quests that could be completed once a day.
So what did I get from all those completed quests? Ta-da.
"Status Window."
I immediately opened my now much flashier Status Window. My level had risen so much that it was unrecognizable compared to just a few hours ago.
Seo Jinhyeok Lv. 8 (Unemployed)
HP: 200/200
MP: 140/140
Strength: 10 (8+2)
Agility: 10 (8+2)
Durability: 8
Intelligence: 8
Level 8. Fucking level 8!
It wasn't information known to the Open Community, but it seemed like clearing a quest first on the server gave additional rewards.
Thanks to the bonus for being the first to clear every Horned Rabbit-related quest, my level had increased far more than I'd originally expected.
There was also the thick book strapped to my right arm like a shield.
It was an equipment item called [World Rabbit Encyclopedia], which you could receive at random upon clearing the Horned Rabbit quests.
According to Open Community statistics, the chance of getting one was 10%, but as the first clearer, I'd been able to choose my reward directly.
It was an amazing early-game item that gave 2 Strength, 2 Agility, and 20 HP through its equipment options. Plus a considerable amount of G, or Gold.
"Goddamn... this is one hell of a silver spoon start."
This was the kind of early-game setup that only Challengers with connections, as the Open Community called them, could have.
I went straight to the shop and spent every last bit of money I'd made that day to buy a full set of armor too.
Then I logged into the Open Community, used the [Attach Photo] feature to show off my equipment and Status Window, and wrote a post.
[Author: Seo Jinhyeok#2661]
[Title: How's this newbie's first-day Tower of Trials build?]
(Photo)
Title says it all.
- Bullshit.
- How'd you get to level 8 on day one?
- You've even got a full set of shop gear lmao
- What Tower is 2661?
- ↳ Yeah, I've never seen 2661 before.
- ↳ ?? For real, what the hell is 2661?
- Asking how it is when it's obviously fucking amazing, you bastard.
- Rabbit Encyclopedia humblebrag, fuck lol
- ↳ Fucking Emily gives everyone but me an encyclopedia.
- You should've enhanced the encyclopedia instead of buying armor.
Everyone was amazed by my build, which was hard to believe I'd gotten in a single day. Deeply satisfied, I closed the community.
"The most expensive room you've got."
I got a room at the village inn, flopped onto the bed, spent a while browsing the community again, and then fell asleep.
The enthusiastic response from the Open Community gave me sweet dreams.
