◈ Cultivating Underground ◈
Chapter 38
──────
The disciples in the communal alchemy chamber began to murmur.
“How is that possible?”
“Could someone have forged the pill-inspection seal?”
“If those Origin-Raising Pills really came from us...”
Yi Hyeon felt something was wrong.
‘Why today, of all days?’
It had been less than half a day since the three flying boats left the main sect grounds.
‘This can’t be a coincidence. But they couldn’t possibly attack the Jangchun Sect with just six Foundation Establishment cultivators...’
Clang! Clang! Clang!
As the alarm bell rang again, Go Won-hak descended from the sky, wrapped in spiritual light, and landed outside the communal alchemy chamber. Two Foundation Establishment elders from Danjeong Peak followed.
“Greetings, Peak Lord Go!”
Go Won-hak raised a hand to cut their greetings short.
“Anyone in the middle of pill condensation, seal the medicinal strength and close the furnace vents first! Disciples at the late Qi Refining stage or above, board the flying boats. The rest of you, take charge of the formation’s auxiliary control stations.”
“Yes!”
The disciples moved at once.
...
Several flying boats hovered outside Third-Stem Fire Court.
“Only disciples at the late Qi Refining stage or above! Everyone else, go back inside Third-Stem Fire Court! Don’t leave the peak without permission!”
Yi Hyeon, Sim Yeon-ju, and Bae Gyeong-song boarded one of the flying boats.
Hummm.
The boat, made of spirit tree wood, left Danjeong Peak and sped toward Oesa Peak.
At the same time, flying boats of all sizes rose one after another from the Jangchun Sect’s other peaks.
More than ten streaks of Foundation Establishment spiritual light flew ahead of the boats toward Oesa Peak. The remaining Foundation Establishment cultivators stayed behind to guard the nine peaks’ formation control stations and key locations such as the storehouses, Scripture Repository, and Spirit Beast Garden.
Above Jingi Peak, an elder holding a flag directed the boats onto separate flight paths. The blue mist filling the spaces between the nine peaks surged like rough waves.
‘Both the outer and inner formations are still intact...’
As the flying boat approached Oesa Peak, they began to hear people shouting.
“Master of the Jangchun Sect, come out and apologize!”
“You killed people with fake Origin-Raising Pills, and now you’re locking your gates?”
“Compensate us for the cultivation and lives of the dead!”
...
Oesa Market, Jangchun Sect.
The broad street, usually busy with merchant carts and passing cultivators, was packed with people.
Most were cultivators at the Qi Refining stage, but six powerful Foundation Establishment auras could also be felt among them.
The flying boat landed on a stone platform inside the inner formation that stretched between Oesa Market and the nine peaks. Yi Hyeon, Sim Yeon-ju, and Bae Gyeong-song took their places behind the blue curtain with the other disciples.
Dozens of stretchers lay in the middle of the street.
Every cultivator lying on them was pale. Some had dark red blood dried around their mouths and beneath their noses. Others were shaking violently or had lost consciousness.
Behind them stood seven coffins covered in black cloth.
Sobbing voices reached them.
“My senior brother’s meridians were completely severed right after he took the Origin-Raising Pill. It had the Jangchun Sect’s pill-inspection seal!”
“Your pills killed people!”
Their anger and grief felt genuine.
At the very least, the injuries and deaths before them did not look like an act.
Inside the inner formation, more than ten Foundation Establishment cultivators had taken up positions, including the lord of Oesa Peak. The physicians from Gamno Peak were ready to receive the injured, while Jingi Peak’s formation masters checked the control stations. Cultivators from Chungeom Peak stood at regular intervals, creating a buffer between the crowd and the disciples.
Including those guarding the main formation control stations and important halls at the main sect grounds, more than thirty Foundation Establishment cultivators remained in the Jangchun Sect.
The lord of Oesa Peak addressed the crowd.
“If you hand over the pills and medicine bottles, we’ll investigate what happened.”
Someone outside shouted back.
“How can we trust the guilty party to examine the evidence themselves?”
A fat Foundation Establishment cultivator in blue robes stepped forward.
They held a small jade bottle.
A first-tier Spirit-Sealing Talisman covered its mouth, and a tree-shaped pill-inspection seal was clearly stamped on the surface.
“Look at this!”
The Foundation Establishment cultivator held the jade bottle high.
“Isn’t this clearly the Jangchun Sect’s pill-inspection seal?”
The murmuring grew louder.
“It was real!”
“Even the Jangchun Sect can’t deny it!”
“The sect master must come out in person!”
The lord of Oesa Peak infused their voice with spiritual power.
“A genuine pill-inspection seal doesn’t prove that the pills inside came from our sect! We’ll conduct a public examination in the presence of several peak lords and an outside alchemist of your own choosing. We’ll also record the entire process on a Recording Stone!”
“How is that any different from putting a cat in charge of the fish?”
The lord of Gamno Peak stepped forward.
“Then let’s discuss the pills later and treat the injured first. Our physicians will go outside the curtain and provide only emergency treatment, right before your eyes.”
An old woman holding a black staff sneered.
“Isn’t that just a trick to erase the traces of poison in their bodies, then deny everything for lack of evidence?”
The lord of Gamno Peak’s expression hardened.
“You’re refusing even treatment?”
This time, an elderly person in mourning clothes shouted. They glared at the Jangchun Sect’s disciples with one hand resting on a coffin.
“My grandson died after taking an Origin-Raising Pill. I paid two hundred and sixty low-grade spirit stones for it! That was everything our family had saved over three generations!”
Their voice trembled.
“That child was all we lived for. Yet all the Jangchun Sect says is that you won’t admit anything until you’ve examined the pills!”
“I understand how you feel. But that makes it all the more important to establish exactly what happened, doesn’t it?”
“What more is there to establish?”
The elderly mourner struck the coffin.
Bang!
“Are you going to cut the dead boy’s belly open and take the pill out?”
Sim Yeon-ju spoke quietly.
“We won’t get anywhere like this...”
“It seems someone’s making sure of that.”
Sim Yeon-ju looked at Yi Hyeon.
“What do you mean?”
“Those Foundation Establishment cultivators.”
Yi Hyeon looked in turn at the fat cultivator who had spoken earlier, the old woman with the black staff, and the four who had yet to speak.
They appeared to be helping the victims, but each occupied one of six directions, as though surrounding Oesa Market.
That was not all.
Others were hiding in the crowd, seemingly concealing their cultivation realms with the Qi-Concealing Spell. The way the surrounding cultivators at the Qi Refining stage kept giving them room or could not approach them was enough to show that they were no ordinary independent cultivators.
Just then, a young cultivator lying on a stretcher suddenly began to convulse.
“Gah!”
Dark red blood gushed from his mouth.
“Myeong!”
The middle-aged woman beside him screamed and grabbed him.
“Stay with me! Myeong!”
A physician from Oesa Peak shouted.
“Bring him inside at once! He needs immediate treatment!”
The lord of Gamno Peak moved at once as well.
“Open the gate!”
A gap barely wide enough for one person opened in the inner formation’s curtain. A stream of blue light shot from the lord of Gamno Peak’s sleeve and wrapped around the young cultivator’s wrist and chest.
But before the blue light could enter his meridians, his chest heaved violently.
Snap.
A series of snapping sounds came from inside his body.
The young cultivator went limp.
The light faded from his eyes.
“Myeong...?”
The middle-aged woman held a trembling hand beneath her son’s nose, but felt no breath.
“Aaaaah!”
Her heartbroken wail spread through Oesa Market.
The already unsteady mood erupted in an instant.
“Another one’s dead!”
“Someone died right outside the Jangchun Sect!”
“Open the gates!”
“Bring out whoever’s responsible!”
Hundreds of cultivators surged toward the inner formation.
The disciples of Oesa Peak hurriedly drew their magical implements.
“Stop!”
“Any further approach will be treated as an attack!”
“Attack!”
“They never meant to treat us in the first place!”
Someone in the crowd fired a fireball.
Whooosh!
The red fireball struck the inner formation’s curtain.
Boom!
The blue curtain rippled.
“Disciples, do not strike back!”
The voice of Chungeom Peak’s lord cut across the battlefield.
“First line, raise a barrier! Second line, open an escape route! Foundation Establishment elders, subdue only those casting spells in the crowd!”
Several Foundation Establishment cultivators moved at once.
A fierce wind formed a low wall in front of the crowd.
Whoooosh!
The cultivators in the front row fell backward.
One struck their head against the stone pavement, splashing blood.
“The Jangchun Sect is killing people!”
“They’re trying to silence us all!”
The lord of Oesa Peak shouted again.
“Clear the eastern road! Get the injured and anyone who doesn’t want to fight out first!”
Amid the sobbing and shouting, some tried to leave the crowd, while others pushed people toward the inner formation. With explosions adding to the chaos, controlling the crowd became difficult.
Then it happened.
“As the ancient inscription on the crimson furnace says:”
An unfamiliar voice rang out across Oesa Peak.
It was not particularly loud, yet the shouting and weeping that filled Oesa Market died down in an instant.
“A hundred herbs bear a single grain of spring within the flames, and that grain of spring sustains a human life for a hundred years. Thus, though the alchemical flame may burn a hundred herbs, it must never burn away a person’s tomorrow.”
The elderly mourner clutching their grandson’s coffin raised their head.
Beyond the outer formation of the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation, a small red cloud was slowly approaching.
It stopped in the air a little over a hundred jang from Oesa Market.
A tall, thin man stood upon it.
He looked about fifty and wore a golden crown. His loose robes were red, with golden flame patterns embroidered along the sleeves and hem.
A red pill furnace as tall as a person floated behind him.
Nine fire dragons writhed across its surface.
The lord of Oesa Peak went pale.
“Venerable Scarlet Furnace...”
Someone spoke in a trembling voice.
“The master of the Hongno Sect!”
Venerable Scarlet Furnace (赤爐上人), a Golden Core cultivator.
He looked down at the Jangchun Sect from the sky.
“Yet in the Jangchun Sect’s furnaces, human lives burn in place of herbs, and spirit stones pile up upon severed paths of the Dao.”
His red sleeves stirred slowly, and the surrounding air grew hot.
“Dozens have had their paths of the Dao cut short by a single poisonous pill, and eight lives now lie in cold coffins and on stretchers. Yet you lock your gates and speak only of bottle seals and pill examinations...”
Venerable Scarlet Furnace brought his hands together and bowed solemnly to the dead.
“As a fellow seeker of the Dao, I cannot bear to watch this.”
He slowly straightened.
“Today, I, Scarlet Furnace, shall shatter Jangchun’s furnaces in answer to the extinguished flames of the dead.”
“Well said!”
Someone shouted from Oesa Market.
“A great senior from the Hongno Sect has come in person for our sake!”
“Master of the Jangchun Sect, come out and admit your guilt!”
Yi Hyeon watched Venerable Scarlet Furnace.
‘Is this a spell too?’
His words carried the mighty spiritual sense of a Golden Core cultivator, along with the mental imagery he had built through a lifetime of working with fire.
Even some Jangchun Sect disciples exchanged uncertain looks.
A nearby Foundation Establishment elder immediately rang a bronze bell.
Ding!
As the clear sound spread, the disciples’ eyes gradually regained their focus.
“Come to your senses!”
Just then, pale gray ash began to fall from the sky.
“Flesh lies in the earth, and bones rest in ash.”
A woman’s voice drifted through the air.
“But broken dreams borrow the wind to knock upon the doors of the living.”
A woman in gray robes was walking through the air, one step at a time.
Her snow-white hair reached her ankles, yet there were hardly any wrinkles on her face.
She held a faded fan in one hand.
Each time it moved, white ash scattered like snowflakes.
“Lady White Ash...”
Bae Gyeong-song’s voice grew tense.
Another Golden Core cultivator from the Hongno Sect.
Lady White Ash (白灰夫人).
She looked at the seven coffins, then at the young cultivator who had just died.
“Earth and ash remain silent, but the wind cannot conceal injustice. Remember that every flake of ash falling today carries a dream cut short along the way.”
Lady White Ash’s voice gently swept through Oesa Market.
The families of the dead began to sob again.
Even some Jangchun Sect disciples lowered their heads without realizing it.
“Stop bewitching their primordial spirits with pretty words!”
Go Won-hak’s sharp shout brought the disciples of Third-Stem Fire Court to their senses.
Go Won-hak crushed a blue alchemical pill held between two fingers. As a red alchemical flame wrapped around the powder, a mind-clearing medicinal fragrance quickly spread inside the curtain.
The uncertainty in the disciples’ eyes gradually cleared.
Venerable Scarlet Furnace spoke.
“Master of the Jangchun Sect, hear me.”
His voice echoed across Oesa Peak and the neighboring peaks.
“Bow three times to the dead, and compensate the injured with spirit stones and alchemical pills. Send everyone who refined and inspected the Origin-Raising Pills outside the sect gates, so that we and the victims may hold them accountable.”
He paused briefly.
“Do so, and I will leave the sign above your sect gates standing today.”
Go Won-hak, lord of Danjeong Peak, answered with a voice strengthened by spiritual power.
“Senior Scarlet Furnace, they refused a public examination, the presence of an outside alchemist, and even our offer to treat the injured. How can you demand that we hand over our disciples as criminals before the truth has been established?”
Go Won-hak pointed at the jade bottle held by the Foundation Establishment cultivator.
“Give us the pills. If their refining traces, flame patterns, and medicinal potency match our sect’s Origin-Raising Pills, I, the lord of Danjeong Peak, will be the first to surrender my identity token and await punishment.”
Venerable Scarlet Furnace shook his head as though saddened.
“The guilty always claim there is not enough evidence, while the powerless must always prove their case with their lives. What evidence could carry more weight than eight corpses?”
The independent cultivators in Oesa Market glared angrily at the Jangchun Sect’s disciples.
Listening to Venerable Scarlet Furnace, Yi Hyeon became certain.
‘He never intended to establish the truth.’
“I will ask one last time.”
Venerable Scarlet Furnace’s red pill furnace slowly moved forward.
Hummm.
The nine fire dragons on the furnace opened their eyes.
“Will the master of the Jangchun Sect come out and admit his guilt?”
No answer came.
Jangchun Peak remained silent.
After a moment, Venerable Scarlet Furnace closed his eyes, then opened them again.
“So silence is your final answer.”
Lady White Ash opened her fan.
“Then we must begin by covering the two characters for Eternal Spring in ash.”
The moment Lady White Ash moved her fan, the six Foundation Establishment cultivators standing in Oesa Market stamped their feet together.
Thud!
Six red iron spikes burst through the paving stones. Their surfaces were densely covered in flame-shaped formation inscriptions flowing in opposite directions.
“Vein-Reversing Spikes!”
The lord of Jingi Peak shouted as soon as the six spikes appeared.
“It’s the Six-Spike Vein-Reversal Formation! Don’t pull out the Vein-Reversing Spikes! Touch them the wrong way, and all the spiritual qi in the outer formation will flow backward!”
The six Foundation Establishment cultivators formed hand seals with both hands.
Hummmmm.
The inscriptions on the Vein-Reversing Spikes lit up in sequence from the bottom.
The existing inscriptions that formed Oesa Market’s formation rose above the stone pavement.
Bzzzzzt!
Red light flowed from the Vein-Reversing Spikes, spreading backward along the blue inscriptions.
At that very moment, more auras erupted from within the crowd.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
A female cultivator who had been pretending to comfort a family. An elderly person who had looked like a merchant company’s clerk. Others who had been hiding on rooftops and in alleys.
Thirteen new sources of Foundation Establishment spiritual pressure revealed themselves.
They all drew magical implements and talismans, gathering around the six cultivators guarding the Vein-Reversing Spikes.
The Jangchun Sect’s cultivators stepped forward as well.
Boom! Boom! Crash!
Spells began to collide.
The lord of Chungeom Peak also drew a sword.
“First line, press the Vein-Reversal Formation! Second line, get the uninvolved independent cultivators out! Don’t chase the attackers into the crowd!”
Seven Foundation Establishment cultivators, including Go Won-hak, flew toward the Vein-Reversal Formation. The rest placed themselves between the victims and the attackers.
The lord of Jingi Peak took out three formation disks and spread them out in the air.
“Cut off the spirit-vein supply to the three eastern control stations and reroute it west! Don’t send the reversed spiritual qi back into the outer formation. Drain it into the earth vein!”
A response came immediately from the main formation control stations on the nine peaks.
Hummm.
Beneath Oesa Market, blue formation inscriptions interlocked with red lines.
As the two formations pulled the same earth vein in different directions, the ground gave a low rumble.
Then nine fire dragons burst from Venerable Scarlet Furnace’s pill furnace.
Roooar!
The nine dragons, each twenty to thirty jang long, caught one another’s tails and spun, compressing themselves into an area just over thirty jang across.
As the nine layers of flame merged, a single red dragon appeared, so dense that its interior looked black.
Each movement of its head warped the air with heat.
The red dragon plunged headfirst toward the outer formation in front of Oesa Market.
Kaboooom!
The sky above Oesa Market turned scarlet.
The blue mist tried to disperse the flames in every direction, but the Six-Spike Vein-Reversal Formation reversed the flow of spiritual qi in that exact area.
Thousands of formation inscriptions appeared in overlapping layers across an area a little over forty jang wide, holding the outer formation together.
But fine cracks appeared between the inscriptions.
Crack, crack, crack!
Lady White Ash pressed her fan downward.
The ash falling west of Oesa Market gathered into a whirlwind thirty jang wide.
Shhhhh!
Pale gray ash slipped into the cracks.
Whenever the ash touched an inscription, it lost spiritual qi and its light dimmed.
“Put more spirit stones into the control stations!”
“Separate Oesa Market’s spirit vein from the inner formation!”
“Break the Six-Spike Vein-Reversal Formation first!”
The Jangchun Sect’s Foundation Establishment elders gave constant orders as they sent magical implements flying toward the Vein-Reversing Spikes.
Dozens of flying swords and glowing ropes swept across Oesa Market.
The thirteen cultivators who had revealed themselves unleashed their spells together.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Halls throughout Oesa Market exploded.
Hundreds of independent cultivators screamed and scattered.
It was difficult to tell victims from attackers.
At least several dozen seemed to have come along without any idea of what would happen here.
“Help!”
“We didn’t come here to fight!”
“Where are we supposed to go?”
“Follow the blue flags!”
Three Foundation Establishment elders from Oesa Peak raised a broad curtain of water, dividing the crowd.
“Put your magical implements into your storage pouches and show both hands! We’ll rescue the injured first!”
Yi Hyeon, Sim Yeon-ju, and Bae Gyeong-song also pulled the fallen independent cultivators gathered beneath the blue flags inside the curtain.
Attackers tried to slip in among them.
The disciples of Chungeom Peak deployed a sword formation to stop them.
Dozens of streaks of sword light flared between Oesa Market and the inner formation.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
The battle spread throughout Oesa Market.
Craaaash!
The curtain covering the forty-odd-jang area in front of Oesa Market shattered.
Fragments of light rained down.
Beyond the breach in the outer formation, the air began to ripple.
Hummm.
A hazy curtain concealing the sky lifted, revealing dozens of small flying boats.
Cultivators stood packed upon them.
Every magical implement and formation they used carried powerful fire energy.
Even a brief glimpse revealed more than ten Foundation Establishment auras aboard the boats.
Together with the nineteen in the crowd, the confirmed number of Foundation Establishment cultivators had risen above thirty.
The lord of Chungeom Peak shouted.
“Deploy the inner formation!”
Hummmmmm.
Pillars of green light rose from the nine peaks.
Baekcho Peak. Gamno Peak. Yeongsu Peak.
Danjeong Peak. Jangchun Peak. Chungeom Peak.
Jihwa Peak. Jingi Peak. Oesa Peak.
The nine pillars connected in the sky.
Light and mist formed an enormous tree that enveloped the Jangchun Sect’s nine peaks.
Its thick trunk stood upon Jangchun Peak, while eight great branches embraced the other peaks.
Venerable Scarlet Furnace spoke again.
“One gate of the outer formation has fallen, yet the master of the Jangchun Sect still refuses to show himself.”
He looked toward Jangchun Peak.
“It seems the old tree has already rotted and fallen. Spring has already deserted Jangchun’s roots.”
Lady White Ash quietly waved her fan.
Pale gray ash surged forward in a wave that covered the area before Oesa Peak.
“If this is an empty house without a master, we should open its doors for the sake of those left inside.”
As the wave of ash covered the inner formation, the blue tree’s leaves rapidly turned gray.
The disciples operating the formation groaned together.
Venerable Scarlet Furnace’s pill furnace rang out.
Doom.
The nine fire dragons rose again and merged into a single red dragon. It coiled around the blue branch embracing Oesa Peak and unleashed a torrent of flame.
Rooooar!
Fire spread along the thick branch and the surrounding leaves.
A crack appeared in the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation’s inner formation.
Crack.
Lady White Ash’s ash slipped into the gap.
Gray snow began to fall inside the formation.
Yi Hyeon hesitated.
‘Should I get ready to run?’
If the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation collapsed, he could escape underground.
Getting out alone did not seem difficult.
The problem was his fellow disciples from Third-Stem Fire Court, including the two right in front of him.
Sim Yeon-ju and Bae Gyeong-song watched the attackers with grave expressions.
He also had no idea what had happened to Na Gyeong-mun, who had left for Cheongmok Ridge.
‘Let’s watch a little longer.’
Crack, crack!
The crack in the inner formation grew longer.
Several formation inscriptions began to go dark, unable to withstand Lady White Ash’s ash.
Venerable Scarlet Furnace addressed Jangchun Peak again.
“Spring is over. The name Jangchun ends today as well. Those who remain, open the sect gates and admit your guilt. I will not burn those who lay down their weapons.”
Some disciples began to look uncertain.
Then an aged voice came from Jangchun Peak.
“Scarlet Furnace.”
It was not a loud voice.
Yet it flowed through the trunk and branches of the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation. As every blue leaf repeated the same voice, it could be heard clearly even far away.
“You’ve loved fire since you were young. Now that you’re old, you’ve even taken up burning down other people’s homes.”
For the first time, Venerable Scarlet Furnace’s expression changed.
At the summit of Jangchun Peak, the doors of an old-fashioned hall, closed for decades, slowly opened.
Creeeeak.
An elderly person in faded green robes walked out, leaning on a staff.
They were terribly thin.
Their wrinkled skin resembled old bark, and their silver hair was sparse. The staff in their hand carried no noticeable spiritual power and had no fancy decorations.
Then the elderly person lightly tapped the ground with it.
Tap.
Blue light bloomed at the summit of Jangchun Peak and seeped into the roots of the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation.
It flowed along the formation’s channels, then concentrated in the damaged branch over Oesa Peak.
Whoooosh!
Dense vitality burst from the damaged area around Oesa Peak.
New shoots sprouted from scorched grass. Broken branches joined together again, and leaves covered in ash regained their blue glow.
Crack! Crack, crack!
The cracks in the inner formation’s Oesa Peak section rapidly began to close.
The enormous branch coiled in the red dragon’s grip straightened again.
Venerable Scarlet Furnace’s flames and Lady White Ash’s ash were pushed dozens of jang back.
“Supreme Sect Master!”
The Jangchun Sect’s disciples all raised their heads.
“They are alive!”
“The Supreme Sect Master has emerged from seclusion!”
The Supreme Sect Master regarded Venerable Scarlet Furnace and Lady White Ash with clear eyes.
“You must have been waiting for this old tree to fall and return to the earth. But you’ve come far too early to offer your condolences.”
Venerable Scarlet Furnace flicked his red sleeves as though he had been waiting for this.
“So you are still breathing. But do you think one decrepit Golden Core cultivator can stop both of us and all the Hongno Sect’s disciples? Even children in the Ram Kingdom know you have little time left, fellow cultivator.”
Lady White Ash sighed softly.
“To think that someone who once dominated an era would embrace the sect’s failings to the very end and turn to ash with them. How unfortunate.”
Just then, another person walked out of the hall on Jangchun Peak.
The neat-looking man, who appeared to be in his mid-forties, was the master of the Jangchun Sect.
He took one step forward.
Thud.
The spiritual qi of heaven and earth within thirty-odd jang shifted toward his body in an instant.
A round halo of mingled gold and blue appeared before his dantian.
The light formed a perfect circle, calm and stable.
Within it, the image of a tree passing through the four seasons repeated endlessly.
New shoots sprouted.
Flowers bloomed.
Fruit formed.
Leaves fell.
And spring came again.
Whoooosh!
Another wave of Golden Core spiritual pressure rose from Jangchun Peak and joined the trunk of the Nine-Peak Rejuvenation Formation.
A powerful pulse ran through the inner formation’s blue tree, as though it had gained a second heart.
“Spring always returns to the Jangchun Sect.”
Footnotes:
Jangchun (長春) means “Eternal Spring.” The attacks on its name, the old-tree imagery, and the closing promise of spring’s return all draw on this meaning.
