◈ Escaping the Mystery Hotel ◈

Episode 31: Room 103, The Cursed Room - ‘Animal Farm’ (5)

──────

[User: Han Ga-in (Wisdom)

Date: Day 13

Current Location: Level 1, Room 103 (Curse Room - Animal Farm)

Sage’s Advice: 3]

I lightly licked my fur.

By now, I was used to walking on all fours.

Out of all the animals I could've become, I actually liked being a cat.

Cats were elegant animals, in their own way.

Being a Norwegian Forest Cat wasn't bad either.

At least I wasn't a cow or a pig.

I felt a little sorry for the others, but I didn't hold much of a grudge against the farm family.

Honestly, what had they done wrong?

They plucked the goose once its feathers had grown in, and they killed the wolf when it attacked.

By the same logic, the cow had gone bad, so they were preparing to slaughter it.

It was the sort of thing that happened all the time on Earth.

The problem was that there had been people inside that goose, that wolf, and that cow.

Of course, I still had to do what needed to be done.

Miaaaow! Miaaaaaow!

I yowled as loudly as I could to draw their attention. When I started crying at the top of my lungs first thing in the morning, May naturally looked my way.

I felt a little bad about what I was about to do, but that kid seemed to like me quite a lot.

Tap. Tap.

“Ah! A-ri, no! Come here! A-ri, be good, okay?”

Tap.

“Hey, no! A-ri, don't knock that over! Mom really loves that vase!”

Sorry. That's why I was knocking it over.

Tap!

Crash!!!!!!!!!

“Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!”

After calling May over, I knocked down the vase that looked the most expensive.

This was ridiculously fun.

Amy came into the room screaming too, but I didn't care.

I ignored them and climbed out the window.

Now I had to head to the cattle shed for my final role.

------------------------------------------------------

“What... what on earth is going on?”

Brian couldn't get his bearings at all.

Less than ten minutes after waking up and starting to rack his brain for a way to restore order to the farm, he heard screaming.

When he rushed to the kitchen, his wife's beloved vase had been shattered to pieces, and his daughter was making a fuss about the cat running away.

Yesterday's wolf incident had already left him overwhelmed. Why had his luck been so rotten lately?

But Brian's nightmare was only beginning.

“Dad! The farm! Hurry!”

When he ran over in a panic, some huge boar was devastating the field.

It wasn't even picking out certain crops to eat!

It was busily uprooting and trampling the crops, as if its sole purpose was to destroy the field!

Anger boiled up inside him.

“Peter, stay alert. I'll get the gun.”

Brian immediately went to get his gun.

What on earth was happening at the farm? He couldn't understand it, but he knew how to deal with it.

If he blew the heads off the troublemakers one by one, things would work themselves out.

As he was about to rush off to deal with the situation, he saw his loyal Golden Retriever staring calmly at him.

Even in the middle of the farm's utter chaos, it wagged its tail brightly as though asking what the problem was. Brian felt himself calm down.

Right. It was no big deal. He just had to shoot the boar and drive off the cat.

----------------------------------------------------

El Doggo (Elena): The farmer's gone to get his gun.

Smart Snake (Lee Eun-sol): I'm taking position too.

Boar (Cha Jin-cheol): Should I get out of here?

Kim Cat (Kim A-ri): Just trust me.

Black Bull (Han Ga-in): When's he coming?

Kim Cat (Kim A-ri): We need to check the gun's condition, just in case.

-----------------------------------------------------

The moment he picked up the hunting rifle in his room, Brian felt at ease.

Right. They'd dealt with all those wolves yesterday using just two guns. All he had to do was shoot the boar dead.

When he calmly headed to the field, the boar was still wrecking it without a trace of fear.

Heat rose up the back of his neck as he pulled the trigger.

----------------BANG!!!!!!!

The gun exploded the next instant.

-----------------------------------------------------

“Arghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

The farmer's scream filled the farm. His family rushed outside in shock too.

The plan worked.

The garbage I'd stuffed into the barrel last night, while staying awake, though cats didn't normally sleep at night anyway, had done the trick.

Unable to hide their shock, the farm family carried Brian to bed, applied medicine, wrapped him in bandages, and made a huge fuss.

Then... it was time for me to complete the final step of the plan.

I jumped lightly through the window frame and ran for a while until I reached the cattle shed.

The black cow, who had been lying on the ground as if waiting for me, raised himself when I arrived.

A fence kept the cattle from going outside.

Even a cow couldn't break it through sheer strength, but its structure was incredibly simple.

All you had to do was twist the handle to the left and lift it up.

Naturally, there was no reason to make it difficult for people to get through.

For animals, this was enough. They lacked the wisdom to use the fence's handle, so they had no way out.

But things were a little different for animals that could think.

With a cat's weak strength, lifting the handle wasn't exactly easy.

I forced my whole body into position and lifted it. Black Bull on the other side braced the raised handle with his horns, then twisted it open with his own strength.

My role was done. The big ones would handle the rest.

----------------------------------------------------------

It was the fourth day since I'd entered this damned farm as a cow.

At last, I was free.

The first thing I did after getting out was let all the other cows out too.

I opened every stall's handle with my horns, then poked the backsides of the cows standing there in confused hesitation. Startled, they all began running out.

Those guys would take care of causing a commotion now...

I needed to head to the geese. Song-i must've been really frustrated too. It was time to let Song-i out.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I knew the Farm Collapse Operation had begun without anyone needing to explain it.

The farm had been filled with screams and shouts as soon as morning came.

Human screams, grief-filled sobbing, and the tremendous racket made by the animals...

By this point, the farm was clearly ruined.

I still had doubts about whether this operation was really the right choice...

But I wasn't confident I could clearly explain what was wrong, so I didn't say anything today.

As I sat alone preening my feathers, the door to the goose enclosure suddenly rattled open.

Were they doing enclosure maintenance in the middle of all this?

It wasn't a person who came to maintain the enclosure. A cow had come.

How had it opened the enclosure door? Then again, it was a “thinking cow.” I couldn't think of it like an ordinary cow.

I didn't need KakaoTalk to understand what it meant. It was telling me to get out too.

Even at the very end, I still wasn't sure about the plan...

Even so, it was time to help everyone.

But what could a goose possibly do to ruin a farm?

I'd never spent so much time thinking about how to destroy something in my life.

Honestly, maybe I didn't need to do anything.

The farm was already an absolute mess!

More than ten cows were running around, letting out strange cries.

A boar was in the field, which already looked impossible to ruin any further, and it seemed ready to knock down even the fence.

More than three hundred geese had begun flying into the sky.

And there was the bloodied farm owner.

Sorry, Brian. No matter how I looked at it, the farm seemed ruined.

What else was there for me to add...?

As I wandered around, I found something to do. That was a carriage.

Come to think of it, what era was this “stage” even set in?

I didn't know what kind of gun the farm owner carried, but his mode of transportation was a carriage.

I approached it and touched the wooden peg-like thing in the center of the wheel with my beak.

I could spend the rest of my time pulling this out.

But would destroying the farm like this really lead to an escape?

I'd been feeling it since yesterday, but there was really something strange about this operation.

As I got lost in my thoughts and kept pecking at the wheel's wooden peg, a shadow appeared.

“You little bastard! Huh? Aren't you the one who was biting at us yesterday? That's strange.

“The one that was biting at us is dead... Anyway, what are you doing here?”

Peter was furious.

If I'd seen him while I was human, I might've thought he was a lively country boy.

But meeting him as a goose, he was the most terrifying thing in the world.

Peter's hand seized my neck.

No way. Was I really going to die like this? Was he going to kill me just because I touched a wooden wheel peg?

As I desperately kept thinking it couldn't be true, Peter's grip suddenly tightened.

My consciousness began to fade. Ah, what an absurd ending.

I couldn't do anything even in Room 103...

At that moment,

An impossibly gigantic form shrouded the area.

Silence - filled the space around us.

It was an impossible phenomenon.

Until just moments ago, the sound of people and livestock rampaging madly had been so loud it made my ears ring. Yet in an instant, it became so quiet that I couldn't even hear a mosquito buzzing.

A tentacle from the dim figure stretched out and touched Peter. My body was free.

It had saved me.

I'd been uncertain until now, but I was sure of it.

That Goblin cared for me, in its own way.

It had been the same for the past several days. A-ri said it had not made any contact when she found it, but it came to me every time and patted my head.

And this time, it had openly saved me from danger.

It was even daytime right now.

Based on its usual pattern, it was a being that only acted at night. Yet it had appeared in broad daylight because I was in danger.

What on earth was it? Something that wasn't human cared for me. Rather than making me happy, it was deeply frightening.

Just as it had appeared, the figure vanished without warning.

As though he'd been hypnotized, Peter turned around and went to do something else as if nothing had happened.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only then did I realize.

The strange feeling I'd had whenever I heard the so-called Farm Collapse Strategy since yesterday.

The source of the doubt that something was wrong.

The Goblin was clearly the most surreal being on this bizarre farm.

Yet the Farm Collapse Strategy, or more precisely, the party's escape plan...

Didn't consider the Goblin at all.

As if it didn't exist.
