◈ Friedrich's Battlefield

Chapter 128 - Epilogue

──────

“…Sorry, but could you tell me that one more time, Celestan?”

Not long after returning to the royal capital of Saint-Victoire, Cecilia received a report from her adjutant, Knight Celestan, in the study of House Fargiere’s royal capital residence. She answered in a daze.

“Yes, my lady. According to the report from Arnsberg fortress, information gathered from the enemy camp has confirmed that Count Matthias Hosenfeld died in battle.”

“That is certain?”

The question slipped out before Cecilia realized that asking such a thing of Celestan, who was merely fulfilling his duty as adjutant by conveying the report, was meaningless. She felt a touch of exasperation with herself. However, Celestan seemed to have obtained more detailed information, and he continued.

“Because of the nature of the information, the front confirmed it repeatedly as well. As a result, it was verified that Count Hosenfeld was indeed cremated at the encampment to which the enemy withdrew, and that his adopted son, Friedrich Hosenfeld, inherited both the title and the office of commander of the Ferdinand Regiment. Considering the number of witnesses who attended the cremation, there is no room to doubt the count’s death in battle.”

“I see… I see. So that is how it is.”

He was dead. At last. Count Matthias Hosenfeld was dead.

She had won. She had defeated the hated enemy who had stolen her family. She had brought him down with the plan she herself devised.

The instant she became aware of that, joy welled up from the depths of her heart, and tears flooded her eyes.

She sank to her knees where she stood. Celestan took a few worried steps toward her, but Cecilia ignored him and looked up at the ceiling. Pressing a hand to her pounding chest, she wore an expression overcome with emotion.

“Ah, God…”

She had done it.

The living hero of Edelstein, the man who had killed her father and then stolen her mother and younger brother from her as well, had finally been defeated. The Kingdom of Edelstein had lost the hero it depended on, and the adopted son he had taken in had lost the father he had only just gained. Just as Cecilia herself had once had her family stolen by him.

She had worked and built achievement upon achievement for this day. From the moment she became a soldier, no, from that day when she was six years old and lost her entire family, she had dreamed of reaching this day.

Were her father and mother watching from God’s side? Were they pleased? Was her younger brother Maximilian watching with them at God’s side as well?

Surely they were.

They had to be watching over her, rejoicing as she accomplished this great deed.

With tears streaming down her face, Cecilia now simply drowned herself in joy.
