◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 12: Golden Poison Frog (2)
──────
Sleeping in the wild without any precautions was extremely dangerous.
Just yesterday, I had nearly died after Mad Dog attacked me in my sleep.
Still, pulling an all-nighter would make a person's physical abilities plummet.
If I had no choice but to sleep, the best thing I could do was prepare as many defenses as possible.
That was why I had spent a small fortune on Snake and Insect Repellent.
I had roughly blocked the cave entrance with logs and rocks, then placed my sword right beside me in case something happened.
Thanks to that, I got through the night safely.

[Post] If you ask me, I'm Wild Grylls!
└ You're alive lol
└ You got bitten by Mad Dog last time
└ Is this only Day 2 now?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah, but my mouth's twisted. I'm fucked.
└ Lmaoooo
└ Looooooooool
└ That's what happens when you sleep on a cold floor lol
└ Hang in there lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: My whole body's aching too, so I'm screwed;;
Maybe it was because the stone floor was so hard, or maybe because I didn't have a pillow, but my whole body ached.
As if that wasn't enough, my mouth had gone crooked too. It had been cold enough for dew to form before dawn, so that was probably why.
I hurriedly stoked the fire, which had nearly burned out and only retained a little warmth. Right now, warmth was essential.
Thank god I had used the clothes PrincessChaenggu gave me as a blanket. Otherwise, it could have been dangerous.
‘Isn't this way too cold? Did it rain before dawn?’
It hadn't been this chilly on the day Mad Dog bit me.
After warming myself up a little, I went outside. Once I left the cave, I realized it had rained before dawn.
‘Rain makes it this cold?’
Fog had rolled in too, making it hard to see. Shivering, I went back into the cave.
It was so cold that I even put on the uniform PrincessChaenggu had gifted me. It was incredibly warm.
For now, I planned to stay in the cave until the fog lifted. Then I would catch the Golden Frog.
‘It's... six o'clock. I woke up way too early.’
The sun set early in the forest, so naturally, I had no choice but to sleep early too.
Thankfully, the Gallery kept me from losing my sense of time.
I should have a quick breakfast with a Fasting Pill, then wait for the weather to warm up completely.
‘Until then, I'll practice the lotus position.’
My body ached because it had stiffened up. A little stretching should make it feel better.
After some simple stretches, I groaned as I settled into the lotus position. Strangely, it was much easier than yesterday.
Yesterday, it had felt like my joints were twisting apart. Now, it only hurt a little.
‘Works for me.’
That wasn't all. Separate from the aches, my body felt full of energy.
Could it be because of the Fasting Pill the Heavenly Demon gave me? She had said it was food made from various medicinal herbs, so it seemed likely.
Grrrgle!
"Ah."
That aside, my stomach kept hurting. Especially when I needed to take a dump, cleaning up was a real pain.
Thank god Passing Dwarf had given me toilet paper. Otherwise, I would have faced a crisis more than once.
I cleaned up thoroughly so the smell wouldn't spread. I should build a toilet later.
‘Time to get ready.’
I had roughly gathered everything I needed to catch the Golden Frog.
Starting with the most important thing, the crossbow, followed by the Heavenly Demon’s Sword and the Golden Shield AllHailTheSun had gifted me.
Could I carry all that? Yes. I had stripped fibers from trees and made something close to rope.
‘It may be temporary, but it's sturdy.’
It didn't have to be perfect. I could strap the shield to my back and hang the sword from my waist.
The crossbow was too large, so I planned to carry it myself. With that, all my preparations were complete.
I even had an antidote, so I was prepared for the worst.
‘I need to remember to block attacks with the shield.’
Before leaving, I made a post in the Gallery.
This hunt could be my last, so I wanted to leave a record.
[Post title] Let's go!

[Post] Twenty thousand gold. Here I come.
└ Oh. Finally heading out lol
└ What if we don't hear from Wild Grylls after this?
└ Then they're dead, I guess lol
└ Waaah, ded ㅠ
└ [Starlight Princess]: Could everyone please cheer them on...
└ [Heavenly Demon]: If danger arises, initiate a trade with this lady at once.
└ They probably won't even have time to trade lol
└ One hit and they're done for~
└ Do you think Allfather will really pay 20,000 gold? lol
That last comment was pretty sharp. Even if I caught the Golden Frog, would Allfather really give me 20,000 gold?
Even if Allfather didn't, it wasn't a huge problem. I had to catch the Golden Frog if I wanted clean water.
If Allfather paid me 20,000 gold, great. If they took it and ran, I could just cut ties with them from then on.
‘Or I can just unload it on Allfather.’
Since it was poisonous, it was obviously difficult to handle, like puffer fish.
One wrong move and I could die, so rather than risk that, I'd sooner roast bugs and eat them.
If I left the corpse around carelessly, I had no idea what effect it might have on me or the water.
So giving it to Allfather would get rid of it and benefit both of us.
‘Safety comes first right now.’
After quickly checking the comments, I cautiously stepped out of the cave.
The dew-filled hours of dawn had passed, and the sun had risen somewhat.
Other beasts could show up at any time, so I had no choice but to watch every step.
‘If I have time, I should put up a fence too.’
Blocking only the cave entrance wasn't safe enough. If an Owlbear smashed it all apart, I was finished.
I needed to use the cave's narrow passage to fight, but if I heard the entrance breaking, it would already be too late.
The best option was to make a fence from nearby trees whenever I could. It would take time, but that was fine.
‘Then I'll need an axe and a dagger too, not just a sword.’
Since I planned to make the cave my settlement, I needed all kinds of tools.
Thankfully, buying them was easy thanks to the Gallery. As long as I had money.
If I caught the Golden Frog and got 20,000 gold, I planned to buy everything I needed.
‘As for food... I should hunt it myself whenever possible.’
Buying food was a luxury because of the insane fees. Besides, it wasn't very trustworthy.
If they had chicken or pizza, that would be one thing, but this world didn't have anything like that.
Someone might say I should just buy ingredients, but they were rarely listed for sale.
Almost no one listed them because of the Auction House's brutal fees.
Even when they did, their shelf lives were seriously questionable.
‘But I definitely need to buy salt.’
No matter how expensive it was, I had to buy salt. It was essential for survival.
Someone once said a nyang of salt was worth a nyang of gold. That was how important it was.
On Earth, food came seasoned by default, so it was fine. Not in this world.
Judging from the era, it was somewhere between medieval and early modern times, so salt was extremely valuable.
Rushhhhh.
Lost in thought about settling down, I eventually reached the stream.
Maybe it was because of the rain before dawn, or maybe for another reason, but the current seemed stronger than yesterday.
Even so, the water was clear enough to see the bottom distinctly.
‘How do I lure that frog out?’
I had arrived, but I had no idea how to lure it out. I couldn't wait forever.
Should I put my arm in the water like yesterday? If I did that, there was no point in bringing the crossbow.
I had to catch it before it noticed me. Since it was poisonous, I needed to be even more careful.
Splosh!
Just as I was thinking, something burst out of the stream. I turned toward the sound.
A gold-colored creature the size of a puppy was leaping high into the air with a salmon-sized fish in its mouth.
A frog covered head to toe in gold landed on a rock above the stream.
The fish's tail was still flopping outside its mouth. It looked like it had just finished hunting.
‘Lucky me.’
Just as Allfather said, it was active in the morning. I hid in the bushes and quietly aimed my crossbow.
I only had one chance. If I missed, I had no idea when another opportunity would come.
Maintaining my focus, I slowly aimed the crossbow. The target was farther away than during yesterday's practice.
Still, a dwarf had personally modified this crossbow. If I aimed well, I could hit it.
Besides, the frog was almost puppy-sized, so there was no risk of missing.
"Ribbit."
"......"
The instant it finished eating, I held my breath.
Whirr!
Then I pulled the trigger.
The harpoon-tipped bolt shot out with force, its attached line trailing behind it.
There had been a slight tremble, but the harpoon bolt flew straight toward the frog.
Thunk! Splash!
The harpoon struck the frog's body. The recoil knocked it into the stream.
"Yes...! Huh?"
My joy lasted only a moment. I barely managed to grab the crossbow before it slipped from my hands.
I didn't know whether the frog was still alive despite being hit or if it was the current, but the struggling frog nearly made me lose the crossbow.
And so fishing time began. I grabbed the line connected to the harpoon instead of the crossbow and pulled.
Thank god I was wearing gloves. If I had been barehanded, the line would have cut me badly.
"Graaaah!"
Gritting my teeth, I pulled the line. Fortunately, it didn't take long to drag the frog out of the stream.
Once I confirmed it was out of the water, I clasped my hands together. They stung beyond belief.
‘Ugh. At least there's no injury.’
When I took off my gloves, there were deep marks, but no cuts. I kept rubbing my palms.
Then I carefully pulled the line and inspected the frog pierced by the harpoon.
Its long tongue and the fish it had just eaten were hanging out of its mouth. It didn't move at all, so it was definitely dead.
"Hehehe."
This puppy-sized thing was worth 20,000 gold. A wicked smile spread across my face.
Twenty thousand gold was a whopping 200 million won. No matter how high the Auction House fees were, there would be more than enough things I could buy with 20,000 gold.
Still, I needed to handle it carefully just in case. I was wearing gloves, but you never knew.
"Ribbit."
"Hm?"
What? Was it alive? I tilted my head at the Golden Frog's croak.
But even after checking again, it was dead with its tongue hanging out. It hadn't made the sound in the first place.
‘If it wasn't this one...’
With a horrible suspicion, I turned toward the stream.
"Ribbit ribbit ribbit."
"Ribbit. Ribbit."
"Ribbit."
And there they were. Several Golden Frogs sitting on the rocks.
The one I had caught was about the size of a small dog. Those frogs were only about the size of toads.
But the number was the problem. Maybe they were a family, because there were a lot of them.
‘...I'll take some pictures first.’
I slowly backed away while taking photos.
Not because I was a terminal Gallery addict. I was curious about how Allfather would react if I showed them.
Would Allfather give me 20,000 gold for each of those too? Or would it be less?
More importantly, how was I supposed to get water now? I already felt gross because I couldn't shower.
"Kyaaaak!"
"Kyak!"
The Golden Frogs all threw their heads back. It was a sign they were about to fire their poison.
I might have dodged one, but with several shooting at once, there was nowhere to run. I hurriedly took the Golden Shield off my back.
"Ptooey!"
"Ptoo!"
"Puh!"
Jets of golden poison shot toward me. Even as I retreated, I blocked them with the shield.
Maybe because it was poison rather than acid, the shield didn't melt. Or maybe it was just good quality.
I should thank AllHailTheSun later. For now, getting back to the cave came first.
‘For fuck's sake.’
I barely made it back to the cave and let out a sigh. One damned thing after another.
Still, it wasn't like I had gained nothing. I had caught the Golden Frog that seemed to be their leader.
I should take comfort in the 20,000 gold. The drinking water problem would need to be solved slowly.

[Post] Frog bastard taken out lol
└ Look at the size of that thing lol
└ Is that really a frog? lol
└ What's it holding in its mouth?
└ Isn't that a fish?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah. I caught it while it was eating a fish.
└ You caught it while it was eating? Lmaooo
└ That's seriously sneaky lol
└ You don't mess with a dog while it's eating lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: It's not a dog though lol
└ [Heavenly Demon]: Are you injured anywhere?
└ [Wild Grylls]: No, I'm not. The hunt itself was surprisingly easy.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: That is a relief. This lady has prepared an antidote just in case, so tell me if you need it.
└ [Wild Grylls]: It's fine. I have an antidote too, and there are some things I need to think about.
└ [Allfather]: Oh, you caught it. May I initiate a trade right away?
└ [Wild Grylls]: I'll make one more post first. I think you'll really like it.
└ [Allfather]: I'll like it? Interesting.
Allfather was going to love it. I had taken the pictures in advance for exactly this reason.
The Gallery had a photo album function, which meant I could post whatever photo I wanted, whenever and wherever I wanted.
I uploaded a photo of the Golden Frog family gathered happily together.

[Post] Do they normally travel in groups? There were seriously a lot of them.
└ [Allfather]: Ooooh... Crude as it may be, my lower half is getting hard...!
└ Looooooooool
└ Lmaoooo
└ That's seriously vulgar. Are they really a professor? lol
As expected, there wasn't a single normal person in the Gallery.
Footnotes:
“A strong, powerful morning! / If you ask me, I'm Wild Grylls!” parodies the infamous Korean mistranslation from Might and Magic VI, with Wild Grylls substituted for Waldo.
