Chapter 153: Slave (3)

──────

Let me say this first. Just because I figured out its weakness didn't mean I could take control of the fight.

Even if the albino gorilla was weaker than the Chief Gorilla, it had still survived in the Forest of Four Seasons.

And it had done so while burdened with the huge disadvantages of its distinctive white fur and poor eyesight.

Either one alone would pose a major threat to survival, yet it was alive and well.

That meant it had something that made up for those disadvantages.

Boom!

The albino gorilla stomped the ground, sending a faint tremor through the area.

At the same time, a massive palm came flying toward my face.

Luckily, I barely dodged by turning my head. But then...

Craaaash!

Towering trees came crashing down one after another from the pressure wave.

It wasn't as powerful as what the Chief Gorilla had shown me, but it was still plenty strong.

If that had hit me head-on, my skull would've exploded.

‘What is this, Buddha's Palm?’

What kind of martial art, no, martial technique had it learned to leave that kind of destruction behind?

I'd roughly expected it after seeing the Chief Gorilla, but the aftermath was beyond anything I'd imagined.

Clicking my tongue, I watched the albino gorilla.

Boom!

Right after attacking, it stomped the ground again and threw a punch.

Its poor vision put it at a disadvantage, so it seemed to have changed tactics to rely on its specialty.

Take a stance, attack. Take another stance, attack again.

The attacks were loud as hell and dangerous to boot.

It was technically a string of attacks, but the pauses between them were so clear that calling it a combo felt questionable.

‘This won't last long either, though.’

It was the classic all-it-takes-is-one-hit scenario. The second I got hit, I was dead.

Still, even though the gorilla was pressing forward, there was some space between each movement.

There was a limit to overcoming poor eyesight with consecutive attacks.

If I could somehow exploit that gap, I could counterattack.

‘Even if my arm breaks, I need to keep hold of my shield.’

Against something like this, a shield was what kept me alive.

I'd dodge everything if possible, but it might have a hidden trump card.

Besides, I was still more used to swinging a sword one-handed than with both hands.

I carefully read the albino gorilla's attack pattern and waited for my chance.

Boom!

The albino gorilla stomped its foot, preparing to attack. I used that opening to slip inside.

It kept attacking, apparently unaware that I'd closed in. In other words, it punched empty air.

‘Just as I thought.’

Its weakness, missing whenever its opponent moved quickly right before it attacked, was still effective.

Until now, it had probably used that kind of pressure to keep from giving up the initiative.

Stab!

But if its opponent could think at all, that trick would be exposed right away.

It was a miracle it had survived this long.

As the albino gorilla struck at empty air, I drove my sword into its foot.

The blade pierced the top of its foot and dug into the ground beneath it. That wasn't all.

Crack! Crack!

When I used cold energy as well, its foot began to freeze.

It didn't freeze slowly. In an instant, the ice spread past its foot and up to its knee.

“Ugh?!”

The albino gorilla grimaced from the pain of its injured foot, then jolted in surprise.

Judging by that reaction, it seemed it had never encountered an opponent with this kind of ability before.

This was the perfect chance. I acted before it could escape.

Stab!

I drove my sword into its other foot and froze that one too.

Naturally, both of the gorilla's legs ended up trapped in ice.

With the strength it had shown earlier, it looked like it should've been able to break free, but...

‘As expected, its lower body is relatively weak.’

It was a gorilla's physical limitation. They were creatures that normally lived with both arms planted on the ground.

No matter how much they lived like people, fully walking on two legs was difficult.

The Chief Gorilla knew that too, which was why it had barely used kicks.

The albino gorilla tried desperately to get free, but it didn't seem easy to break out of the ice using only its lower-body strength.

First, it had to deal with its completely frozen legs.

It raised its huge arms to break the ice around them.

Crunch!

“Uoooh!!”

But I was faster. I plunged my sword into the albino gorilla's thick arm.

Just as with its legs, its arm began to freeze, ice covering it all the way to its shoulder.

Maybe because the ice was quite strong, it couldn't break it easily either.

Only one arm remained. Since it was flailing around in a panic, subduing it was easy.

“Uaaaaah!”

“Ah. Shut up.”

Smack!

It struggled desperately to escape, so I smacked it in the face with my shield.

It stayed conscious after one hit, so I hit it once more. Only then did it quiet down.

Before long, the gorilla went limp, tongue hanging out.

I'd hit it to knock it out, sure, but I still hadn't expected it to actually pass out.

But...

‘Would this bastard really be unable to move just because it's tied up?’

I stared at the unconscious albino gorilla, thinking it over.

Like the Chief Gorilla, it could use mana.

On top of that, it had displayed some incredible martial arts, so simple restraints wouldn't be enough.

Crack! Crack!

So I tied it up as tightly as I could with binding rope, then froze everything except its head.

I'd have preferred to bind it in chains, but the Auction House didn't have any.

“Fast Sloth. I'm going to look at something for a bit, so keep a close eye on it.”

“......”

“If it looks like it's about to escape, punch it in the face.”

Even if it tried to escape, there was no need to worry with Fast Sloth around.

Before logging into the Gallery, I looked over the destruction it had caused.

All the timber I'd painstakingly processed had been blown away, and the surrounding area was a complete wreck.

Luckily, the cave was fine, but now I had even more work to do.

‘I'd like to use it as a worker somehow...’

I had a method planned out, but I wasn't sure whether it would work.

Before that, I should make a post on the Gallery. I had plenty of time to think.

[Post title] Title: Caught an Albino Gorilla

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo of the albino gorilla frozen while bound with rope)

[Post] (Photo of the destruction caused by the albino gorilla)

[Post] This bastard suddenly showed up at my shelter and asked me to join it in fighting the Chief Gorilla.

[Post] When I said no, it tried to kill me. So I subdued it for now, and I'm thinking about what compensation I should get.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Was it quite skilled?

└ [Wild Grylls]: It was strong, aside from having really bad eyesight. If I hadn't met the Chief Gorilla first, I think it could've been dangerous.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: It seems to have some connection to that Chief Gorilla. Did you notice anything unusual?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Nothing much, aside from its palms being noticeably red.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Palms as red as blood... It does not seem to be a very sound martial art.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Yeah. Doesn't that usually mean someone's been consumed by a specific kind of energy?

└ [Heavenly Demon]: You know quite a bit. Black would be related to demonic energy, while red would be related to blood energy... We may need to interrogate it.

└ [Wild Grylls]: But the Chief Gorilla's palms were normal?

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Things would be different once one reaches a certain realm. It would mean its understanding of that martial art is deeper. So it wasn't that the albino gorilla was weak. The Chief Gorilla was just ridiculously strong.

The albino gorilla was in a similar position to me.

I'd also prioritized survival, so I'd only learned the basics rather than studying deeply.

└ Why are these gorilla bastards such assholes? Last time they broke into someone else's home and stole stuff, and now some random nobody shows up too lol

└ Isn't expecting morals from gorillas the real mistake? These bastards are animals;;

└ True. That makes sense.

└ The Chief Gorilla is nice compared to this one. It let Grylls go instead of killing them, didn't it?

└ Doesn't that mean having a shitty personality is better for survival?

└ No, no, no. Just surviving is what makes you strong lol

└ By the way, did that random gorilla talk too?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah, it talked. It spoke the Central Plains language.

└ What did you say when it started talking nonsense?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I swore at it, and it went nuts.

└ Hahahahahaha

└ Hahahahaha

└ A time-honored your-mom joke that works even on animals lol

└ Who the hell taught a gorilla the Central Plains language?

└ Ask it when it wakes up later. I'm curious too.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Before that, I need to figure out what to do with this bastard. Is PrincessChaenggu around by any chance?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Why meee?

It seemed PrincessChaenggu had been watching too, even if PrincessChaenggu hadn't left a comment.

I'd been planning to send PrincessChaenggu a private message anyway if they weren't around.

Since PrincessChaenggu happened to be reading right now, I might as well deal with it here.

I could get all kinds of information too, so I continued in the comments.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Sports players are strictly prohibited from using mana, right?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Of courseee. If they mess up, they could kill their opponent.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Then is there some kind of tool that can control mana?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Don't tell me you're gonna put one on that gorilla?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yep.

└ Fuck, that's slavery lol

└ Doesn't seem like a great choice;; What good is blocking mana use? It'll break everything with brute strength.

└ Even a dumb gorilla can tear a person apart with ease;;

Most of them kicked up a fuss, saying it was insane and that I'd get killed.

A gorilla's strength really could tear a person apart like a cabbage leaf.

And this albino gorilla was a mana user. Its physical abilities would be even greater than those of an ordinary gorilla.

Simply putting a Mana Suppressor on it wouldn't solve everything.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Don't worry. I'm in the same position anyway.

└ Why are you in the same position?

└ [Wild Grylls]: (Photo of Fast Sloth) This is my master. Say hello, you little shits.

└ Ah hahahahahaha

└ Hahahahahahahaha

└ Grylls really was a slave lol

└ I never even thought about that lol

└ This bastard Grylls... You did this because you wanted a friend?

└ Not a friend, a comrade.

But things were different with Fast Sloth around.

The Gallery users took it as a joke, but for me, it was half joke and half serious.

If I didn't regularly offer tribute(?) to it, my life would be in danger.

If the albino gorilla tried to threaten me, I could leave it to Fast Sloth and settle things quickly.

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: I do have something similar. It's an older model, so it's a little harsh. Is that okayyy?

└ [Wild Grylls]: What does it do?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: First, it absolutely can't be removed without the key. And if it detects mana use, electricity flows through the whole body and electrocutes the wearer.

└ [Wild Grylls]: That sounds fucking great. I'll buy it right now.

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: No need to buy it, I'll just give it to youuu. It was a pain to get rid of.

└ Isn't that an actual restraint tool?

└ I heard tools like that were used when slavery still existed...

└ Yeah, that's right. Prisoners still use them too. The current sports suppressors were invented based on those.

I received a Mana Suppressor from PrincessChaenggu.

It generally looked like a dog collar.

It also had sharp spikes so it couldn't be forcibly removed.

[PrincessChaenggu]: Put this on that gorilla, then hide the key somewhere.

[Wild Grylls]: Thank you. But what's this bracelet?

PrincessChaenggu gave me not only the suppressor and the key, but also a bracelet.

When I asked what kind of bracelet it was, I got a rather alarming answer.

[PrincessChaenggu]: If that gorilla lays a hand on you, electricity will flow through it toooo. It's for your safety.

[Wild Grylls]: Um... Excuse me, but this isn't really a tool from when slavery was widespread, right?

[PrincessChaenggu]: It was invented to protect referees. There were so many violent people back then. It'll come in handy.

[Wild Grylls]: Thank you. I'll use it well.

[PrincessChaenggu]: And what do you say when you're thankful? Hehe.

[Wild Grylls]: Chaeyu is a god, and Kone is invincible.

[PrincessChaenggu]: Very good! There's a match in two days, so please support us then toooo!

I had no idea what PrincessChaenggu wanted me to do, but cheering hard would probably be enough.

After learning how to use it, I put the suppressor on the albino gorilla.

“Ugh...”

By coincidence, the albino gorilla woke up right as I put it on.

It startled me, but the suppressor was already in place, so I decided to see what happened.

The albino gorilla looked at me with a dazed expression.

Because of its poor eyesight, its first reaction was basically, ‘Who are you?’ But that didn't last long.

“Uu! Uuuuu!”

It was so enraged that it had forgotten how to speak.

It glared fiercely at me with bright red eyes.

Then it wriggled its body, seemingly trying to use mana...

Crackle!!!

“Ookyaaaaaa!!!”

Just as PrincessChaenggu had said, a powerful electrical current burst from the suppressor around its neck.

No matter how strong an animal was, they were all equal before electricity.

I spoke to the albino gorilla after it got properly fried and quieted down.

“Hey. Say that again. You said you were going to make this place your shelter?”

“Ugh...”

Maybe it didn't understand my words, but it seemed to know I was mocking it.

The albino gorilla glared at me again, but it was pointless.

Crackle!

Another current ran through its neck, subduing it immediately.

After getting shocked twice in a row, the albino gorilla went limp.

I smiled in satisfaction and opened my mouth.

“What did you say your name was? Wibaek?”

“Ugh...”

Who was it that said slaves didn't need their old names?

I thought about whether there was a suitable name, then grinned.

I didn't know if it would understand, but that didn't matter. I'd keep saying it until it did.

“From now on, your name is Kkobong.[1] Got it?”

Along with the Gallery, I'd acquired a worker.

Footnotes:

[1] Kkobong means “lackey” or “underling.”
