◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈

Chapter 18: Health (3)

──────

As I said before, catching Mandrakes was simple.

First, pull them out. If they looked like they were about to scream, beat the hell out of them.

If they still stubbornly tried to scream? Pack dirt into their mouths. Then they couldn't do anything.

I dug up Starlight Princess's first, since she needed it most urgently, then slowly gathered some for the other registered users too.

Next was Heavenly Demon, who'd helped me the most.

[You]: Please take this and restore your strength.

[You]: Are you feeling all right?

[Heavenly Demon]: I was only in danger then. I am perfectly fine now.

[Heavenly Demon]: I am more worried about your condition.

[You]: Other than my stomach hurting several times a day, probably because of the Fasting Pills, I'm fine.

[Heavenly Demon]: That is proof that impurities are leaving your body.

[Heavenly Demon]: You did not undergo Body Reforging, so they are being expelled that way.

[You]: So it's a good thing?

[Heavenly Demon]: Of course it is. I can give you more if you wish.

[Heavenly Demon]: You gave me something good for the body as well.

[You]: I'm fine.

[You]: It'll be enough if you give me the antidote and tinnitus medication you mentioned before.

[Heavenly Demon]: I feel sorry that I am always the one receiving things.

[You]: That's what I wanted to say.

I always thought this, but Heavenly Demon was truly a fine person.

Everyone teased her for being an old fogey, but she was someone who always returned what she received.

This was probably what it meant to be an adult. I had no idea why someone like her was in the Gallery.

No, actually. Looking at her usual posts, she was one of the Gallery's finest addicts.

Maybe she got bored living such a leisurely life, so she spent her time browsing the Gallery.

'So this is the antidote, and this is supposed to help with tinnitus.'

After finishing my trade with Heavenly Demon, I checked the items I'd received.

They were labeled in writing that looked vaguely like Chinese characters, so I was confused for a moment, but Heavenly Demon explained them to me.

The Gallery had automatic translation, but only inside the Gallery. Every country had its own language.

Come to think of it, who the hell created the Gallery and even added automatic translation?

It was a strange world in many ways, but it wasn't something I needed to worry about right now.

[Chat participant] SwordTasteMaster

[You]: No, I told you I don't want to get healthier.

[You]: Consider it payment for the Elixir you gave me last time.

[You]: Or give it to an acquaintance who's sick. You can sell it too.

[SwordTasteMaster]: Hmm... All right.

[SwordTasteMaster]: Since you put it that way, it'd feel wrong to refuse.

[SwordTasteMaster]: Thank you.

I practically forced the trade on SwordTasteMaster.

They could get healthier than they were now. Why refuse?

'Won't they regret it later?'

There were plenty of people in the world who neglected their health and ended up dead.

Health wasn't something you could take care of just because you wanted to.

You had to keep at it consistently if you didn't want to suffer later.

[AllHailTheSun]: This is that precious herb?

[You]: Yes. I heard it's expensive.

[You]: You gave me a shield before, so I'll give it to you as a gift.

[AllHailTheSun]: Does it do anything for stamina? You know, that kind of thing?

[You]: Uh... They said it's an Elixir ingredient, so probably?

So he was a man. Well, the username gave me a rough idea.

[AllHailTheSun]: Thanks. I'll give you a great gift later.

[You]: You already gave me a shield.

[You]: If I find anything else that's good for the body, I'll give you more.

[AllHailTheSun]: You're too damn nice.

[AllHailTheSun]: Then every time you give me a Mandrake, I'll give you one thing you want. Sound good?

[You]: Sounds good.

I had Mandrakes to spare.

Their colony was large enough that I could keep giving them to registered users.

Still, I had no intention of gathering them recklessly.

It'd be a disaster if I ran out when I really needed them.

It was easier to think of them as a rainy day fund.

After ending the trade with AllHailTheSun, I looked for PrincessChaenggu.

PrincessChaenggu had helped me too, so I planned to give her one as a gift.

[You]: PrincessChaenggu.

[You]: I'll give you one of these.

[PrincessChaenggu]: Thank youuu.

[PrincessChaenggu]: I'll give you another uniform toooo.

[You]: Thank you.

[You]: Who is it this time?

[PrincessChaenggu]: Chaeyu's legendary goalkeeper, Gioni Sader.

I still had no idea who that was. Still, I'd received clothes, so I thanked her.

When I first received a uniform, I wondered if it would even be useful. It had helped far more than expected.

Maybe because of the material, it stretched well and didn't feel restrictive.

[You]: Thank you.

[You]: Was it the Champions League? I hope you win it.

[PrincessChaenggu]: Not the Champions League, the Challengers Cup!

[PrincessChaenggu]: But thank youuu.

[You]: The Challengers Cup was a knockout competition between all the clubs in Mephisto, right?

[PrincessChaenggu]: Yep. It's the greatest competition in the world.

[PrincessChaenggu]: Clubs from other countries compete too, not just clubs from Mephisto.

I didn't have a team I rooted for, but I liked soccer too.

When the Republic of Korea, the weakest team, defeated Germany, the strongest team in the world, it felt like a miracle.

When I saw Argentina win the World Cup, all I could think was that they had actually pulled it off.

Soccer was a sport where even the best players and teams in the world could fall victim to a miracle.

Its unpredictability was incredible, which was why it was the world's most popular sport.

Especially since there wasn't much entertainment in this world besides the Gallery, it was only natural for sports to be popular.

'Don't they have anything like the World Cup?'

The Challengers Cup, or Challengers for short, which PrincessChaenggu mentioned, allowed clubs from other countries to participate, not just Mephisto's clubs.

From what I'd heard, there were domestic competitions and competitions where foreign clubs attended.

Maybe it was different in the past, but now every team had different races mixed in, and it had become a battle of club pride.

Still, it didn't seem like they had a World Cup where people competed based on their country of origin rather than their club.

'Not my problem.'

I had bigger problems to deal with.

Even if I was interested in soccer, I didn't have the time to care.

Still, curiosity was curiosity, so I planned to look into it someday.

I'd heard humanity's influence was rising day by day, and even Mephisto's status as the birthplace of the sport was being shaken.

'I should make a post and ask.'

The Gallery was really convenient at times like this.

I wanted to ask PrincessChaenggu more, but unfortunately, I was short on time.

Apparently only the Head Mod could adjust private chat time limits. I wondered if I should make a suggestion.

[You]: Thank you. Go Chaeyu!

[PrincessChaenggu]: Thank youuu! I hope you survive tomorrow toooo!

My conversation with PrincessChaenggu ended with us cheering for Chaeyu.

The only registered users left were Allfather and Passing Dwarf.

[You]: Hello, Allfather. I'll give you one Adult Mandrake.

[Allfather]: Oh! Thank you very much. How much should I pay you?

[You]: You gave me valuable information, so you don't have to pay.

[You]: By the way, has there been any progress on the Golden Frog antidote?

[Allfather]: Can I be frank with you?

I found myself puzzled by Allfather's question.

Why ask if they could be frank? It sounded a little ominous.

[You]: Did the results turn out badly?

[Allfather]: Yes. This is especially important information for you, Grylls.

[You]: Um... Please explain.

[Allfather]: The Golden Poison Frog's venom is stronger than expected.

[Allfather]: My laboratory nearly melted from the poison.

[You]: Damn, are you all right?

As I already knew, the Golden Frog's poison was incredibly powerful.

It wasn't even acidic, yet it could melt wood. That said it all.

I'd warned Allfather too, but if their laboratory almost melted, it must have been a dangerous situation.

[Allfather]: Yes. Fortunately, there was no accident.

[Allfather]: But more importantly, the venom was so potent that even the antidote failed to neutralize it.

[You]: Then...?

Did that mean I had to buy water? As I thought that, Allfather made a suggestion.

[Allfather]: But it wasn't a total loss.

[Allfather]: Researching the venom sac helped me discover something else.

[You]: That sounds positive.

[Allfather]: Yes. If things go well, Grylls may be able to gain resistance to poison.

Allfather's explanation went roughly like this.

Researching the Golden Frog's venom sac had revealed a special compound.

Using it, my body could gain resistance.

[You]: Isn't that even better?

[Allfather]: But you will need to consume it for at least two weeks.

[Allfather]: Only then will you gain resistance to the Golden Poison Frog's venom as well.

[You]: It sounds like I need to catch more frogs?

[Allfather]: As expected, you catch on quickly.

Heh. This guy, seriously.

I let out a hollow laugh at Allfather's shamelessness.

Still, it was more than worth trying.

They said I could gain resistance to poison itself. That would be especially useful for me.

'Bugs are more dangerous than frogs right now.'

I could at least block the Golden Frog's venom with my shield or dodge it.

But venomous snakes and insects, as well as poisonous plants, could appear from unexpected places.

I was especially susceptible to rashes from plants, so Allfather's suggestion was tempting.

[You]: It doesn't sound bad.

[You]: But I'd appreciate it if you made what you promised me before first.

[Allfather]: I do have some decency.

[Allfather]: I will make an appropriate amount and send it to you within two days.

[You]: Thank you.

My conversation with Allfather was over, but I felt a little worried.

They said it wasn't an antidote, but something that would gradually acclimate me to poison.

That meant the effect wouldn't appear right away. I could easily get caught off guard.

'I should hold out with the antidote Heavenly Demon gave me for now.'

I didn't think Allfather would scam me.

If they were going to scam me, they would've done it when I handed over the Golden Frog.

Seeing as they had that much money, their skills were probably the real deal.

'Now only Passing Dwarf is left.'

Lastly, I gave Passing Dwarf a Mandrake as a gift.

But before long, that bastard had soaked it in liquor.

I couldn't believe it when I saw it.

I'd at least understand if they sold it for money.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: I have lots of money lol

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah. Your shit's huge.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Thanks for the compliment.

└ [Wild Grylls]: You little shit lol

└ LOL

└ LOLLLL

└ I've got nothing to say lol

I should just stop talking.

Some people were on the verge of death because their health was so bad, while others just soaked the stuff in liquor.

The world really was unfair.

Then again, getting dropped into the Forest of Four Seasons in the first place was unfair too.

Anyway, after giving gifts to the registered users who'd helped me, I moved on to my next task.

Thwack! Thwack!

"God, I'm dying."

Digging traps at the cave entrance.

I felt like I'd regret it if I kept putting it off, so I needed to work on it steadily.

Would my whole body ache the next day? Better than dying.

'Every time this happens, I want to take a shower.'

For now, I had no choice but to endure.

Even if the Golden Frog threat disappeared, showering every day would be difficult.

The problem wasn't cleaning up afterward. It was my clothes.

Clothes weren't optional if I wanted to minimize contact with bugs and plants.

But wearing the same clothes every day would become a hygiene risk.

That meant I needed to wash them from time to time, which naturally required a lot of water.

'I'm going to need a lot of soap.'

Hygiene was especially important in a place like this.

It'd be dangerous if I got sick by accident.

It wasn't like taking medicine would make an illness disappear right away.

Maybe that was why I stopped working once the sun set and bought water.

I was sweaty, so I should at least wash the areas that needed it for hygiene's sake.

The refreshing feeling I'd experienced once was hard to forget.

It felt like a waste of money, but it was cheap if I considered it the price of my life.

'Is this day two?'

After washing up roughly, I logged into the Gallery.

I'd finished the day's work, so I wanted to leave a record.

I'd probably post every day like Starlight Princess.

[Post title] Survival Day 2

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo of a campfire)

[Post] Day 2 of survival complete! See you tomorrow.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Rest well.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: You worked hard. I gave the Mandrake to my mother.

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Thank you for the gift. Stay healthyyy.

└ [AllHailTheSun]: Post first thing tomorrow. I'll worry about you otherwise.

└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: You worked hard!

Was it because I'd gotten fairly close with the registered users?

Most of them were offering well-wishes, saying I'd worked hard.

The Head Mod was in there too. It seemed I was getting more attention than I thought.

I didn't pay much attention to Anonymous Users. Most of them were busy indulging their own desires.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Hey. I can't sleep after soaking the thing you gave me in liquor lol

└ [Wild Grylls]: Just die already.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Buuurp, buuurp lol

└ Fuck, I can smell the booze through the post lol

└ LOLLLLLLLL

└ LOLLLLLLL

There was one useless person, but they were helpful, so I let it slide.

They talked like this, but they'd even given me liquor before out of guilt.

'Come to think of it, how is Starlight Princess doing?'

I hadn't heard anything, and it made me uneasy. I hoped she'd at least post tomorrow.

I slowly lay down on the ground. It wasn't hard. It even felt a little soft.

That was thanks to the mat and pillow I'd bought from the Auction House. Apparently, they were stuffed with straw.

'It is... soft.'

The exhaustion from today's work and the softness made me increasingly sleepy.

Unable to resist it any longer, I slowly closed my eyes.

Hoping that tomorrow would bring nothing but good things.

* * *

Around the time Grylls finished the day's work and fell asleep, the Gallery remained active, day and night.

It was usually flooded with every kind of pointless post, but it had changed recently.

The subject was Wild Grylls, who had supposedly fallen into the Forest of Four Seasons.

After it was confirmed that Wild Grylls really had fallen into the Forest of Four Seasons, Grylls began receiving a great deal of attention.

Even the Adult Mandrake incident had seemed like it would be brushed off as a minor incident.

[Post title] A Gallery degenerate is fucked in real time;;

[Post] My friend is a knight, and their superior told them to trade with Grylls and get an Adult Mandrake;;

└ For real?

└ Yeah, for real. They're high-ranking.

└ That came out of nowhere.

└ Apparently they were watching without saying anything. Looks like the dwarf's post convinced them.

└ LOL Is the emperor going to order one next at this rate?

└ More than that, I'm curious how the Mage Tower will react.

└ Why the Mage Tower?

└ They have a Mandrake monopoly. They're probably watching this the closest.

└ Come on. Would this really cause that much of a fuss?

└ You don't know about the incident involving the Head Mod before last?

└ What incident?

└ Someone from another territory made a secret deal with Dwatt Territory and shipped goods without tariffs. That territory nearly went bankrupt because of it.

└ Holy shit.

└ Damn.

└ But doesn't Grylls have a limited supply?

└ The Mage Tower's supply is limited too. They don't grow Mandrakes; they only manage them.

└ So they get them from outside too?

└ Yeah. I heard they have authority and exclusive rights, so they're real tyrants about it.

└ Grylls must be a problem for the Mage Tower.

The atmosphere was starting to turn strange.
