◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 22: Owlbear (3)
──────
Now that I’d picked a name, all that was left was getting closer to Wonmo.
Giving him honey had raised his affection for me considerably, but a baby was still a baby.
He couldn’t tell right from wrong yet, and his mother was dead. I’d have to take care of him.
But then a major problem came up.
‘How am I supposed to raise him?’
I’d never even had a pet back home.
I could barely take care of myself. What did I know about raising a pet?
I’d at least seen dogs and cats before, but Owlbears were another matter.
Other than their massive appetites and viciousness, I knew nothing about them.
‘The important thing is making him recognize me as his owner...’
I watched Wonmo scamper around the cave.
Maybe because he was still a baby, he was overflowing with curiosity.
“Sniff. Sniff sniff.”
He lingered for a while where his mother had died.
Judging by the way he was sniffing around, he seemed to remember her scent.
But the mother Owlbear had already been sent to a farm upstate... no, the Auction House.
Bids were still coming in steadily, so I’d be receiving a hefty sum soon.
‘But that little guy is going to grow that big?’
With only a little exaggeration, the mother Owlbear had been the size of a house.
But look at Wonmo. The round little guy was only the size of a medium-sized dog.
His fur was pale too, so just as the Gallery had said, he must not have been born that long ago.
“Kyueeeek!”
“Oh, come on.”
He was far too curious.
Why were you eating the Fasting Pills in that sack?
He had a sharp sense of smell, so he must’ve caught their bitter scent. Why would he do that?
“Kyaaaak!”
Rip!
Even as a baby, he was still vicious.
Wonmo swung his claws and tore open the sack.
I cried out as the Fasting Pills came spilling out in a rush.
“Hey! Park Wonmo! Don’t do that!”
“Kyuu, kyuuu?”
“Even if they taste bad, you can’t do that!”
I scolded Wonmo while hurriedly dealing with the mess.
I laid the torn sack on its side so the Fasting Pills wouldn’t keep spilling out.
Then I bought a suitably sized sack from the Auction House and transferred them into it.
‘Didn’t they say Owlbears even eat rotten corpses?’
How awful did Fasting Pills have to taste for all of them to react the same way?
I was used to them, so I could handle it, but apparently animals couldn’t.
‘First, I need to make him recognize this place as home...’
There was one thing I didn’t understand.
Why had the mother Owlbear brought her baby here?
As territorial animals, Owlbears were extremely sensitive about their territory.
That meant they normally wouldn’t trespass into another animal’s territory.
Even if she’d been scouting around, she wouldn’t have brought her baby with her, especially one that had only just been born.
‘Had someone taken her original territory?’
No. Probably not.
The mother Owlbear had been in peak condition when she encountered me.
She hadn’t even tried to rip me apart right away. She’d started by investigating me.
Was she simply... moving? I had no idea.
The best way to find out would be to locate their nest.
‘That’s impossible right now.’
Just look at that ball of fur staring at me with those round eyes.
He was sitting on the straw mat, blankly watching me...
“Come here. Come on.”
“Kyuu.”
He was so cute I could go insane. How could he be this cute?
I showed Wonmo all the affection I could, scratching under his chin and petting his head.
Yeah. How could I leave this little guy behind?
Even if I did leave, I couldn’t be away for long until he recognized this place as home.
‘Then repairing the house is the best option...’
It was a little disappointing, but not a bad choice.
The biggest problem was still water.
I could manage my own hygiene, but Wonmo was different.
I had no idea what kind of diseases he might catch, so bathing him was essential.
‘Washing him in the stream... would be difficult.’
Not because of the Golden Poison Frog, but because Wonmo could bolt anywhere.
Especially if he crossed to the other side. That would be a serious problem.
If the terrain changed at the exact moment he crossed, it would be a complete disaster.
‘Isn’t there a better way?’
I looked at Wonmo blankly staring at me, then silently picked him up.
His fur was so fluffy, yet I couldn’t name him Fluffy. Your owner is sorry, Wonmo.
As if he understood how I felt, he rubbed his face against me.
Grrrrumble-
Then a strange sound reached my ears.
It definitely wasn’t coming from my stomach.
I gently put Wonmo down and stared at his face.
“Kyuu...”
“Are you hungry?”
“Slurp.”
Why were you licking your lips while looking at me? That was unsettling.
Before Wonmo went berserk, I hurried into the Auction House.
There were all kinds of things in the Auction House, so I could buy suitable meat.
‘They even sell monster meat?’
Orcs, goblins, gnolls, trolls, and more.
I didn’t really understand why people put that stuff up for auction.
Monster meat was tough and tasted terrible, so people didn’t eat it unless they were desperate.
It looked like they put it on the Auction House because they didn’t know what else to do with it. The prices were relatively low too.
“Here.”
“Sniff sniff sniff. Sniff.”
I bought some orc meat and placed it in front of Wonmo.
Wonmo sniffed it curiously, then took a huge bite.
“Nom nom nom.”
“Is it edible?”
“Nom nom nom nom. Chomp! Chomp!”
He ate well. Being an Owlbear, his diet seemed closer to a bear’s.
I placed a bowl of water beside Wonmo, then went outside.
It would take him a while to finish all that, so I planned to get back to work.
Thwack! Thunk!
After chopping away with the axe, the tree had started to sway a little.
The sound wasn’t dull anymore. It was closer to the sound of splitting firewood.
After checking the cave’s location, I gave the tree a hard shove with my foot.
The tree slowly began to fall, then came down with a loud crack.
Boom!
It was such a large tree that simply falling made a tremendous amount of noise.
I hoped that hadn’t caught the attention of other animals.
At least the biggest danger, the Owlbear, had already been sold through the Auction House.
‘Would cutting it into thirds be enough?’
I walked over to the fallen tree and estimated its size by eye.
At this size, I could probably make three or four walls without much trouble.
The problem was splitting and shaping this thick trunk.
‘...Why did I do this?’
It was one problem after another, and I still had a mountain of work left.
I should’ve learned the Inner Energy Cultivation Method first, like I’d planned.
I’d done something weird because I had nothing better to do, and now I’d only made more work for myself.
I let out a deep sigh and decided to start by cutting off the smaller branches.
There were so many that I probably wouldn’t need to worry about firewood for a while.
Once I’d roughly trimmed the branches, I planned to split up the tree.
‘A sword won’t work, right? I need to buy a saw...’
Just thinking about sawing made me dizzy.
Still, I couldn’t give up.
Before buying a saw, I went back into the cave to rest.
“Purrr...”
Inside, Wonmo was sleeping on the mat.
He’d cleanly finished all the monster meat I’d given him earlier.
No matter the animal, babies tended to sleep all day.
I watched Wonmo curled up like a ball, then silently entered the Gallery.
[Post title] Our Wonmo is sleeping
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] (Photo of Wonmo curled up like a ball while sleeping)
[Post] Isn’t he seriously cute?
└ Ahh... This heals my soul...
└ More! Give us more!
└ He really looks like a ball lol
└ The more I see it, the more I think Wonmo is a great name
└ I really want to hold him at least once
Most of the comments were nothing but praise.
If your heart was still unmoved after seeing that, you weren’t human.
As I proudly read through the Gallery comments, one comment caught my eye.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Is that emergency rations? Looks tasty.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Are you fucking insane?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: I drank and went to sleep yesterday, then just woke up. What happened?
It was Passing Dwarf. Apparently, they had only just woken up after drinking.
How could they look at Wonmo and call him emergency rations?
I thought they were an idiot in many ways, but the Gallery users were even worse.
└ Wonmo isn’t Grylls’s emergency rations. Grylls is Wonmo’s emergency rations lol
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Really? So Grylls found himself a master.
└ Grylls is the butler lololol
└ Lmao when he gets hungry, he’ll eat you first lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: You’re all really fucking insane;;
Right. This was the Gallery. I let out a hollow laugh.
Since Passing Dwarf was here, I asked a question.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Dwarf. Can you get me a good saw?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: A saw? Oh, did you cut down a tree?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah, but just thinking about sawing it makes my balls tremble.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Unless it’s made of adamantium, a saw is a saw. It’s better to chop it down with an axe first, then use a saw.
└ [Wild Grylls]: That’s too hard.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: You thought it was going to be easy? That kind of work takes at least two people.
It sucked, but I had nothing to say.
Nothing was easy.
The best option would be learning the Inner Energy Cultivation Method from Heavenly Demon.
If I could use mana, wouldn’t things get better somehow?
Until then, I had no choice but to work my ass off.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Or sell the lumber at the Auction House and buy a fence or wall. Simple.
└ [Wild Grylls]: There weren’t any.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Why wouldn’t there be?
Why wouldn’t there be? I’d looked through it myself, but there wasn’t.
There were fence-like things, at least, but nothing in the form I wanted.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Why are you asking me that? If there aren’t any, there aren’t any. And wouldn’t they be expensive?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Even if they’re expensive, they’ll be cheaper than the lumber you cut down. You don’t know how valuable trees grown in the Forest of Four Seasons are?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Of course I don’t. I told you I came from another world.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Wasn’t that drunken bullshit?
└ [Wild Grylls]: You little shit lol
└ Hard to believe lolololol
└ LMAO
No. Why wouldn’t they... believe it?
But that wasn’t the only thing I found strange.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Why wait until now?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: So you’d suffer a little lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: You bastard
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Sawing it isn’t the end either. You have to dry out the moisture, plane it, and there’s a lot more lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: What happens if I don’t dry it out?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Mold everywhere!
└ [Wild Grylls]: Ha;;
└ Looks like he just got hit with reality lol
└ At least you learned something. Have a drink!
I really wanted a drink.
If I’d known this would happen, I should’ve at least made a post earlier.
Like Passing Dwarf said, selling the lumber at the Auction House seemed better.
‘People in that blocky world built things so easily.’
That was because the protagonist over there was ridiculously capable.
They could make a sword or pickaxe in no time as long as they had materials. That was impressive.
Why had I fallen into this hellish world with no abilities at all?
It was a situation that could only make me sigh, but I was still fortunate to have the Gallery.
‘Should I ask Passing Dwarf?’
They were irritating, but no one I knew was better in this field.
After thinking for a moment, I asked Passing Dwarf.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Then if I give you lumber, can you make me a suitable wall?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: I told you to just buy one from the Auction House. I saw a few earlier. It’ll take weeks to dry the wood.
└ [Wild Grylls]: There’s nothing at the Auction House that I want.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: True, they might sell fences but not walls. I’ll find one.
└ [Wild Grylls]: You’re not messing with me, right?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: I don’t joke about things like this.
That was a relief.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Except when I’m drunk lol
└ [Wild Grylls]: What are you holding in your hand right now?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Beer.
└ [Wild Grylls]: You motherf-
└ [Passing Dwarf]: It’s a beverage to dwarves. Problem?
└ That’s true lol
└ It’s the kind of true that gets you punched lol
└ LMAO
└ LOL
I was getting dizzy. What kind of alcoholic was this?
Still, they didn’t seem to be joking, so I looked through the Auction House.
As expected, there were no walls in the form I wanted.
Once you made a wall, that was it, so there wasn’t much demand for them.
Even if people needed one, they’d cut down and shape nearby trees rather than buy one directly.
‘First, I should list the logs.’
I registered the fallen tree outside on the Auction House.
I had no idea how much it would sell for, but I hoped it was expensive like Passing Dwarf said.
If it was, all these trees would become savings accounts.
‘Looks like I’ll have to wait for the wall.’
Passing Dwarf said they’d list one soon, so I could buy it then.
Before that, I planned to work on the area around the cave bit by bit.
‘It’s not like I’m settling here forever...’
First, I marked the trees I needed to chop down with my axe.
I planned to dig a moat after installing the wall.
After roughly marking them with the axe, I went back into the cave to rest.
Wonmo was still deep in dreamland. He was seriously cute.
I smiled warmly, then logged into the Gallery.
There were already a lot of comments.
The most noticeable was from AllHailTheSun, a familiar registered user.
└ [AllHailTheSun]: Hey. Did you brush Wonmo’s fur?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Why would I brush it?
└ [AllHailTheSun]: Animals with lots of fur need brushing. Or you should bathe him. Try brushing him once.
I didn’t know what that was about, but I should do as I was told for now.
It looked like they raised animals too.
I bought a fine-toothed comb from the Auction House and approached Wonmo.
Careful not to wake him, I began gently combing through his thick fur.
“...What is this?”
Now I understood why AllHailTheSun had brought it up.
Something was wriggling between the teeth of the comb. It looked absolutely disgusting.
“T-ticks?”
I desperately needed water.
Right now.
