Chapter 55: Tigers Die and Leave Their Stripes (2)
──────
Having made up my mind to butcher it, I headed outside.
A pig was walking toward me.
It was Wonmo, his belly swollen from digging into the tiger carcass to his heart’s content.
Judging by all the blood around his mouth, he’d had a proper feast.
“Wonmo. Let’s wipe your mouth before you go in.”
“Kyuuu...”
“No. That won’t do.”
I cleaned Wonmo’s mouth before he went into the cave.
Should I brush his teeth soon, too? The thought suddenly crossed my mind.
Wonmo soon went into the cave, looking sleepy.
While he did, I carefully examined the fallen tiger carcass.
‘It really is huge.’
How the hell had I beaten this thing? It was hard to believe.
Fast Sloth had saved my life several times, but even then, this was absurd.
It was much taller than me, and I didn’t even need to mention how long it was.
‘It has to be over five meters long.’
Just as Heavenly Demon had said, it was worthy of being called a “mountain lord.”
I circled the tiger, half fascinated and half awestruck.
When I reached its neck, I was met with a gruesome sight.
‘Wonmo ate here.’
The part of its neck I’d stabbed with Heavenly Demon’s Sword yesterday still bore clear bite marks from Wonmo.
Wonmo’s jaws probably couldn’t have damaged the tiger’s hide.
He must’ve found the spot I’d cut and happily dug in.
‘I need to butcher it fast.’
At least six hours had passed since the tiger died.
Luckily, the forest’s weather was fairly cool. Otherwise, it would have started rotting already.
‘No, wait. Has it started rotting anyway?’
As long as I salvaged the hide, I didn’t care.
Wonmo was an Owlbear that happily ate rotten corpses, so that was fine too.
First, I made a Gallery post. I took pictures of the tiger from a distance.
“Fast Sloth. Stay beside it a little longer.”
“...”
“Good. Hold out two claws... Ah, you can’t?”
I had Fast Sloth stand next to it so everyone could see the size difference.
Fast Sloth readily went along with my request. It seemed happy to have helped kill the tiger too.
I also found the severed front paw and compared it with my hand. I prepared everything properly.
[Post title] Pictures of the tiger I killed

[Post] (Picture of the giant tiger’s face)
[Post] (Picture showing the tiger’s overall size)
[Post] (Picture comparing the tiger’s front paw to a hand)
[Post] (Picture of the completely wrecked Golden Shield)
[Post] This was the fucking tiger that raided me at night. This bastard nearly killed me.
[Post] If Fast Sloth hadn’t helped me, I’d have died at least three times.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: This woman believes it may be the largest tiger she has ever seen. It is a tiger most fitting for the name mountain lord.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Seriously. I’ve never taken down a tiger that big either.
└ [Wild Grylls]: But you guys take down things way stronger than that.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: This woman has dealt with martial artists more often than monsters or beasts. She hunted a beast but once, long ago.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: I’ve killed plenty of monsters because of subjugation orders. That thing seems like it’d be stronger than an ogre at minimum.
└ [Wild Grylls]: How strong are ogres?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: You’ll find out if you fight one. Still, since you know how to use aura, it should be easy, right?
└ [Wild Grylls]: ;;;
└ [Allfather]: Those unusually long fangs make it a Saber-Toothed Tiger. They’re known for being particularly vicious. You had a rough time.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Normal Saber-Toothed Cats aren’t this big, right?
└ [Allfather]: They’re half that size. That Saber-Toothed Tiger is bigger than you can imagine.
└ Isn’t a Saber-Toothed Cat the same as a Saber-Toothed Tiger?
└ They sound like the exact same thing?
└ [Allfather]: They’re completely different. Saber-Toothed Cats only resemble tigers. Their appearance is entirely different.
└ [AllHailTheSun]: What happened to the shield I gave you? Is it totally wrecked?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah. The tiger chewed it up. Still, the shield saved my life.
└ [AllHailTheSun]: Hmm. I should give you another one soon. Let me know when you’re done butchering it. That tiger hide looks tempting.
└ [Wild Grylls]: This is my first time butchering, and the hide’s soaked in blood, so it isn’t in great shape.
└ [AllHailTheSun]: Then I’ll have to think about it. Take the shield first. I’ll think it over. We’ll trade tonight or tomorrow morning, so keep that in mind.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Thank you, as always. If it doesn’t work out, I’ll give you another Adult Mandrake.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: I thought it was just big, but it’s fucking huge;; How did you survive?
└ [Wild Grylls]: I got lucky. Oh, and I faced it with a barricade between us at first. It would’ve been really dangerous without it lol.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: At that size, wouldn’t it just smash through the barricade?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yep, it broke one. Guess it didn’t realize it could at first.
└ Grylls. Be honest. You found it already dead, didn’t you?
└ [Wild Grylls]: (Picture of the scar on my shoulder) What did you say, asshole?
└ Sorry.
└ That scar is insane. I’ll believe you just because of that.
└ I would’ve doubted it if you didn’t have a single injury, but the scar makes this way more believable lol.
└ A glorious wound, confirmed!
└ Now you just need a scar on your face. A scar on the face is a basic requirement for adventurers.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Folks. I’m not an adventurer. I’m a castaway. You adventurers need to rescue me.
└ Honestly, having no scars is best.
└ True.
└ Look at that attitude shift lol.
└ But Fast Sloth is fucking cute lol.
└ For real, sometimes it’s cuter than Wonmo lol.
Everyone acknowledged my achievement. Being recognized by the Gallery gave me an inexplicable sense of pride.
I closed the Gallery and looked at the enormous Saber-Toothed Tiger.
Now all that remained was butchering it.
‘...Where do I even start?’
Sometimes, the YouTube algorithm showed me videos of people deboning pigs or cows.
But even those videos started with animals that had already been butchered to some extent. They didn’t show the process from the beginning.
And since this Saber-Toothed Tiger was ridiculously huge, even the prep work looked difficult.
‘I’ll make another Gallery post first.’
Someone had said earlier that if I asked the Gallery about butchering, plenty of people would answer very kindly.
Apparently, butchers who weren’t kind got fired or something.
This world had plenty of beasts and monsters like Saber-Toothed Tigers, so butchers were highly valued.
[Post title] Can someone help with butchering?
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] (Picture of the dead Saber-Toothed Tiger)
[Post] I’m about to butcher this Saber-Toothed Tiger. Can someone help?
[Post] Do I start by hanging it up or something?
└ Skin it first. Cut open the belly, then pull the hide off like you’re tearing it away. It’ll be easier.
└ It’s fucking huge, so even handling the hide is going to be rough.
└ You need to hang it after skinning it, but can you even hang something that big?
└ [Wild Grylls]: I’ll have to make some pillars or something.
I started by skinning it. I headed toward the Saber-Toothed Tiger’s belly.
I already had a dagger in my hand.
‘Come to think of it, it’s still bleeding. Is that normal?’
Blood was trickling from the Saber-Toothed Tiger’s torn neck.
The pool of blood kept growing, and I wondered if that was supposed to happen.
Wonmo had somehow managed to eat its flesh while only getting blood around his mouth.
Either way, the smell of blood was already filling the air, so I intended to finish cleaning up as fast as possible.
Poke.
‘Wow. That’s tough.’
I’d hoped otherwise, but an ordinary dagger couldn’t pierce the hide.
If I had taken it down without damaging it, I probably could have sold it for a high price. But the hide was drenched in blood.
Only after I poured aura into the dagger did it pierce the hide.
Riiip. Tear. Tear.
I made a long cut down its belly, then slowly began pulling off the hide.
At first, I tried to peel it off by tearing it away, but whenever that didn’t work, I carefully cut it with the dagger again.
“Ghhhhh...!”
Even rolling the Saber-Toothed Tiger’s body over was difficult. I had to circulate mana through my entire body just to do that.
My body ached a little, but it wasn’t unbearable, so I managed to turn it over.
It hadn’t gone stiff from rigor mortis yet, which made things easier.
Riiip. Tear. Rrrip!
Skinning it alone took thirty minutes.
Removing the sections clotted with blood was especially awful. I should scrub it with charcoal later.
‘Heavy.’
The hide was heavy too, because the body was so huge.
The old me would have needed all my strength just to lift it.
Now, I could simply sling it over my shoulder.
‘I’ll leave the hide here.’
Except for its head, the Saber-Toothed Tiger now lay exposed in pale flesh.
Aside from its half-severed neck dripping blood, it wasn’t too disgusting.
‘...Come to think of it, I need to wash too.’
I had practically showered in blood while cutting the Saber-Toothed Tiger’s neck.
The blood had dried hard onto my skin, and I wondered how long it would take to wash it all off.
As I had mentioned earlier, I planned to hang it upside down to make butchering easier, then clean up afterward.
If I left it like this, another predator might smell the blood and come over.
‘To hang this upside down...’
The Saber-Toothed Tiger was easily over four meters long.
As I wondered what to do, I noticed the towering trees around me.
What if I tied ropes around the tiger’s feet and hung them from sturdy branches?
To do that, I needed an excellent helper.
“Fast Sloth.”
“...”
Its eyes seemed to say, What do you want?
I bought a suitable rope from the Auction House and tied it around the tiger’s hind legs.
I didn’t bind them together. I tied a rope to each leg separately so they could spread apart.
“Hang this rope from that branch and this one from that branch. Got it?”
“...”
“You climb trees better than I do. I’ll give you more Fasting Pills.”
Only then did it start moving sluggishly at the offer of more Fasting Pills.
The problem was that it was way too slow. Watching it frustrated me, so I carried it over to the tree myself.
While it was doing that, I barely managed to drag the tiger into place. It was damn heavy.
“Can’t you climb a little faster?”
“...”
“Ugh. Forget it.”
Next time, I’d just throw it. That would be better.
It took some time, but with Fast Sloth’s help, I successfully hung the tiger up.
“Wow. It’s fucking huge. How did I take this thing down?”
With it hanging upside down, I could truly feel just how enormous the Saber-Toothed Tiger was.
It was so large that I had to crane my neck all the way back to see its head.
I had been too frantic yesterday, and it was night, so I hadn’t fully realized it.
Trickle, trickle.
More blood flowed from its half-severed neck.
Seeing that, I hurriedly bought a large iron barrel from the Auction House.
I would put the blood and innards in this barrel.
The innards would probably become fish food. The fish would feast on them.
‘Damn, I want grilled intestines.’
Thinking about guts reminded me of grilled intestines, but I quickly gave up on the idea.
I absolutely refused to get parasites.
While the tiger’s blood drained completely, I began cleaning up.
First, I washed the blood that had dried on my body.
‘I’ll heat some water first.’
Blood came off better in hot water. I used charcoal instead of soap.
While the water heated, I started with the blood pool.
I roughly covered it with dirt, and once it had soaked in enough, I put the dirt into the barrel meant for the innards.
I planned to dump it in the river with the innards.
“Ughhh...”
Once I had roughly finished cleaning up, it was time to wash myself.
Soaking in the warmed water felt like heaven.
I felt so dazed that yesterday seemed like a dream.
I scrubbed my blood-soaked body squeaky clean.
‘There are still stains. Can’t help that.’
Some traces remained, but they would fade with time.
I enjoyed my first bath in a while, then changed clothes.
I left the uniform, which had become rags and was soaked through with blood, as it was.
‘Every piece of clothing is precious right now.’
It would be enough to wash and keep it. I could just call it work clothes.
With the cleanup mostly finished, I headed back to the upside-down tiger.
Since blood no longer flowed from its half-severed neck, it seemed to have drained completely.
‘It came out this much?’
I had bought a large iron barrel, considering the size of the innards, but it was already half full.
Even accounting for the dirt I had put in earlier, that was a lot.
“Hmm...”
Now I had to split open its belly and take out the innards.
I crossed my arms and thought about it. Because of the height, I would probably need a ladder.
‘I’ll have to buy one.’
I needed a step ladder, not an ordinary ladder.
I wondered if they even had something like that, but they did.
The reviews said it worked well too. I bought it without hesitation.
With the ladder bought, it was time to begin the real butchering work.
└ First, split the belly open completely and check the condition of the innards. Normally, you’d wash them, but if you aren’t going to eat them, you can leave them as they are.
└ Remove the head before taking out the innards.
└ For reference, the innards of most animals are really big. Keep that in mind.
They really were kind people. Following their advice, I got to work.
First, I split open the belly so the innards were fully exposed.
As the Gallery had said, the innards were wrapped in a thin membrane.
Just cutting the belly open didn’t make them spill out.
‘Ugh. It’s still disgusting.’
After removing the tiger’s head, I carefully began taking out the innards.
If anything burst, it would be a complete disaster. At least I had a strong stomach.
Before long, I removed the six hollow organs, still wrapped in the thin membrane.
What remained were the five vital organs clustered around the rib cage.
Once I removed those, the butchering would be finished. The moment I touched my dagger to them...
Thump! Thump!
“Gah!”
The vibration that ran through my hand nearly made me faint.
I almost fell off the ladder, but barely regained my balance.
With a deeply startled expression, I stared at the spot where I had felt the vibration.
Among all the parts of an animal, there was only one place where a “pulse” could be felt.
“...Gulp.”
I swallowed and carefully placed my hand against it.
As if to prove it wasn’t an illusion, I felt a clear heartbeat.
It was definitely dead, so why was its heart beating? I couldn’t understand it at all.
If I couldn’t understand it, there was only one thing left to do.
Check for myself.
Riiip.
When I cut the thin membrane, the gruesome interior was revealed.
Lungs befitting its massive body. And...
Thump! Thump! Thump!
A massive heart between them.
The dead Saber-Toothed Tiger’s heart was beating.
