◈ I Became an Undetected Priest Impersonator ◈
Chapter 10
──────
I Became the Gallery's Head Admin (4)
Critical patients rushed in all at once.
And most of them were armed soldiers.
"Gah.. S, somebody please bring me some strong liquor.."
Some of the soldiers who hadn't lost consciousness couldn't bear the pain and begged for alcohol.
I wondered if a war had broken out somewhere nearby, but for wounds from weapons, these were crude.
It felt like seeing the patients the orcs had gotten not long ago all over again.
‘I heard the orcs were all wiped out.’
Questions rose, but this was no time to dwell on them.
"Please gather the patients in one place."
While the soldiers carried the stretchers over, I slowly drew up my power.
‘Healing Wave.’
Whoosh!
A dazzling light filled the surroundings.
The soldiers' wounds, wrapped in the light, closed quickly, and the voices groaning in pain subsided one by one.
The problem was that it didn't end there.
No sooner had I finished treating them than new casualties kept coming in.
‘Healing Wave.’
‘Healing Wave..!’
It was only after I'd cast Healing Wave about three more times that I finally managed to hear what had happened.
"A dungeon was discovered within the domain."
"A dungeon, you say?"
It was the first I'd heard of it.
But I didn't let on that I didn't know, and searched the Gallery.
I had to filter through the tabs once, then flip through quite a few pages before I found the information I wanted.
Title: Introduction to Dungeons (1)
Author: DungeonIsTheAnswer
A dungeon is not a physically existing space in reality.
A space in another world connected to reality. That is what's commonly called a dungeon.
.
.
(Omitted)
The first two lines were enough to grasp the definition of a dungeon.
What I wondered about was why the soldiers had gone into one.
I got the reason from what a soldier told me, glancing around nervously.
"Actually, the Lord said that anyone who found Priest's luggage would be richly rewarded. So we followed the orcs' trail, and we thought maybe the luggage was in the cave we found.."
"..."
"Of course, we had no idea the place we went into was a dungeon."
In the end, it was because of me.
The soldiers had gotten hurt searching for luggage that never even existed.
"Please tell the Lord that it's not valuable enough to be worth people getting hurt over. And-"
A sigh escaped me.
"If anyone ever comes back with my luggage, I'll just leave for another city."
It was a bluff, of course.
But considering the Lord's personality, it would work well enough.
"Your luggage aside, you're in for some hardship until the dungeon gets sorted out."
Priest Margaret clicked her tongue as she spoke.
She said it as if something terrible would happen if a dungeon were left alone.
I went back and read the rest of the Introduction to Dungeons post, which I'd only skimmed a few lines of.
…
A dungeon, once created, discharges the monsters inside it every time a certain amount of time passes.
And when this count accumulates, all the monsters in the dungeon are discharged at once, which is called a dungeon backflow or a monster wave.
There are roughly two ways to prevent a backflow.
…
‘No wonder it felt familiar.’
I already knew of something similar.
The Tower.
The unidentified structure that had suddenly been erected in my hometown one day.
Dungeons resembled that structure.
‘Honestly, it's practically just a miniature version of the Tower.’
The Tower, too, had a space connected to nothing outside, and if the floor count wasn't renewed, it eventually collapsed and monsters poured out.
The dungeon the post described wasn't much different.
‘A coincidence?’
They might well be related, but it was hard to judge without even seeing a real dungeon.
I thought about asking the Gallery, but users who didn't know the Tower existed would probably be no help in getting a proper answer.
In that case, the way forward was simple.
"Priest Margaret, I'm going on a business trip."
Checking it myself would settle it.
Margaret slowly nodded and said,
"We don't get field-duty pay, so don't come complaining later."
"That's a shame."
For the record, I meant it.
Though my face showed nothing of the sort.
…
"Please get on, Priest."
"Then I'll gladly ride."
The wagon the soldier offered me was a shabby cargo wagon loaded with supplies.
Naturally, the ride wasn't comfortable, but it was still better than walking.
"Be careful out there."
Margaret had come out to see me off, and she seemed worried, as old people tend to be.
"And don't go yelling at the orcs the way you did at that difficult customer, just because you lose your temper."
"Do you think I'm that fearless?"
I was not.
"True, if you valued your life you wouldn't."
I valued it, but I'd probably do it anyway.
"Heh heh, then I'll see you in a few days."
"Off you go."
We kept the goodbye short.
It was almost time to leave.
Clunk, clunk-
The wagon gradually turned its wheels, matching the marching pace.
Before long, Margaret, who'd been seeing me off at the city entrance, was out of sight, and about then a soldier walking beside the wagon came closer and spoke.
"At this speed, we'll arrive before sundown. Please get some sleep."
It was the best consideration a soldier could offer.
But with everyone marching hard, sleeping felt like it'd draw looks, so I smiled amiably and shook my head.
"I'm not sleepy. I'll just enjoy the scenery."
"Yes, sir."
‘Still, if we'll arrive before sundown at this speed, that's quite a way.’
We'd set out a little after noon, so the distance had to be around fifteen kilometers.
That was fairly far from the city.
‘At this distance, I'd think it could just be left alone.’
I was in no position to say so, having promptly tagged along with the soldiers on this field trip, but I couldn't quite understand why the Lord had sent soldiers in such a hurry.
Then I saw the scenery spread out along the road and understood.
‘There are farmers out here.’
Of course, not everyone lived inside the city.
Add the surrounding farmland, and the Lord's position made sense.
"Wheat fields, I see."
Had I been lost in thought as I watched the scenery?
The soldier seemed to think I was interested in the wheat and spoke to me.
"For the record, that's my parents' field. Come early autumn, we always brew beer from the wheat left over after selling, and it has a special taste, different from barley beer."
"Just thinking about it makes my mouth water."
"Ha ha, I'd be glad to treat you anytime, Priest."
The soldier who'd spoken was quite warm.
But just as I started to wonder if they were being overly friendly, I realized the soldier's face looked familiar.
And a soldier whose face would look familiar to me could only be one kind.
"..You're the soldier I treated before."
"Ha ha, that's right. You remember."
Once I'd placed them, the soldier's face lit up.
"You saved my life back then. And what I just said wasn't empty talk, so please do come."
"I will."
The soldier glanced around at the others and went back to the ranks.
They'd probably stepped out of line for a moment just to say thanks.
‘..Still, liquor brewed from wheat they grew themselves, huh.’
Not bad.
What I liked most wasn't the liquor itself but the fact that it was brewed from wheat grown by their own hands.
‘I heard crops grow well if you spread Heal on them.’
If I ended up getting a church, tending a vegetable garden didn't sound so bad.
We reached the destination just as I was fretting over what to plant in that garden.
"We've arrived, Priest."
At the soldier's call, I came to my senses and looked around.
Not far off, I saw a cave giving off an ominous aura.
"That cave is the dungeon entrance. We've posted guards, but please be careful. You won't, I'm sure, but you must never go in."
"Understood."
I agreed with the soldier's words.
Even I wasn't confident about taking on several orcs alone.
‘I could barely manage two.’
That didn't mean I wasn't going in.
I decided to find a decent excuse to follow the soldiers in later, and in the meantime lent a hand with chores like hauling supplies and pitching tents.
"Oh, Priest, you don't need to help!"
"Everyone's working hard. How could I just stand and watch?"
Besides, I knew from my own time in service. When everyone else was grinding away and only one person was resting comfortably, nothing earned more resentment.
But the soldiers seemed to find this sight quite unfamiliar.
"Are all priests like that?"
"No way. I was a mercenary for a long time, so I know. Priests who can work miracles usually have heavy feet and heavy heads."
"Hey, what if the Priest hears you?"
"Priests always live so quietly that they can't hear anything if there's even a little noise, so don't worry."
"R, really?"
For the record, I could hear them just fine.
‘Looks like healers get treated the same way here too.’
Back in my homeland, healers were called "healer-dragon-men."
Just as the soldier said, the term came from how they held their heads stiffly high even though they climbed the Tower alongside everyone else.
‘But you can't do that.’
There was no reason to needlessly get on the wrong side of the companions climbing a deathtrap with you.
When things actually got dangerous, it was obvious what choice those companions would make.
"Phew, that's everything, Priest. Good work."
Once we'd hauled all the supplies, the soldiers pitching the tents finished at about the same time.
Being assigned a tent came right after.
"This is the tent for you to stay in, Priest."
The tent was spacious.
But after looking around inside, I couldn't help frowning.
In the big tent, there was just one single blanket.
It wasn't that I was unhappy about having too few blankets.
"But it looks like I'm getting this whole big tent to myself."
"Ha ha, a priest should get to rest comfortably."
I shook my head.
While I was posing as a priest, I had no intention of openly accepting special treatment.
"There's no need for that. I'll sleep with the soldiers. I don't intend to take special treatment even in a place like this."
"But wouldn't that be uncomfortable for you?"
"If I'm going to whine over that much, I might as well cut off my dick."
"Pfft.."
The soldier hurriedly covered their mouth.
Luckily, the crude joke seemed to work, and the soldier's attitude eased considerably.
In the end, a few extra blankets for the soldiers were brought into the tent.
"..Oh, right, we plan to begin clearing the dungeon tomorrow before lunch."
"Is the reason we're not going today that it's getting late?"
"The time of day doesn't matter much. I don't have a lot of dungeon experience either, but the time inside a dungeon is fixed anyway."
The soldier paused for a moment.
"We're not leaving right away because it's better to go in at full strength, and because some people haven't arrived yet."
"There seem to be plenty of soldiers here already. More forces are coming?"
"Not so much forces as.."
The soldier glanced around and lowered their voice.
"A knight is coming."
A knight.
Could it be a high-ranking knight?
Even for a knight, the soldier seemed excessively nervous.
"And also the Lord's daughter."
No wonder.
