Chapter 1: Prologue

──────

"That wraps up the achievement grind."

I stretched, working the stiffness out of my body.

Still, it had been worth it. Today, I'd finally finished Academy of the End, the game I'd been stuck on for over a month.

Academy of the End was a real-time action RPG set in an academy, where the protagonist cleared the seven dungeons of the Evil God Tartarus and defeated the final boss.

I'd only ever enjoyed turn-based games before, but this one had a surprisingly strong JRPG feel. It suited my tastes well enough to keep me hooked until the end.

And today, I'd finally completed the last achievement.

[One Who Reached the End]

[You have completed every achievement in Academy of the End.]

[1 player has earned this achievement.]

One player meant I was the first person in the world to clear every achievement.

Of course, that had only been possible because luck was on my side.

The problem was [0 Hits Taken], an achievement known to be impossible to complete in Academy of the End.

Since it was an action RPG, it seemed like it should've been possible with guarding, dodging, and parrying, but there was an unexpected obstacle.

Halibal Velder, an extra character and monster who appeared during the academy raid section.

His attacks had been designed with 100% accuracy and were impossible to dodge.

Every attack from the player landed on him, but his own attacks always landed too. Even the tiniest amount of damage couldn't be avoided.

Users cursed the developers, saying the achievement was impossible to earn, and every time, the developers only claimed there was a way.

But no matter what crazy stunts players, including me, pulled, no one could find a way to avoid Halibal's attacks.

Then, on this playthrough...

For some reason, a bug occurred and Halibal miraculously froze in place. Thanks to that, I managed to complete the achievement everyone said was impossible.

An achievement that could only be cleared if a bug occurred. Wasn't that a little unfair?

But I cleared it, didn't I?

After confirming that the ending credits had finished, I returned to the main menu and was about to quit the game. I'd gotten everything there was to get out of it, so it was time to let it go.

At that moment, the familiar [NEW GAME+] button on the main screen was glowing blue.

I'd never seen that effect before. As if under a spell, I clicked it, and a new difficulty level that hadn't been there before was unlocked.

[Very Hard]

…

[Nightmare]

…

[Space-Time Mode (NEW!)]

[※The gameplay will change in a unique way.]

[※You cannot change the difficulty until you clear the game.]

"Change in a unique way?"

I'd thought I'd seen everything, but there was something like this hidden away?

The developers had never even mentioned it, so it made sense that I hadn't noticed. The unlock condition was probably completing every achievement.

No, they hid this behind an achievement that was impossible to clear without a bug? Did they have any conscience at all?

‘Wait. Does that mean I'm the only person in the world who can play this?’

I couldn't pass this up.

"Should I give it a try?"

A hidden mode no one else knew about. Just taking screenshots would surely send the community into a frenzy.

Thinking I might get a post onto the trending page, I checked [Space-Time Mode] and pressed [NEW GAME+].

At that moment, my vision turned completely white, and I lost consciousness.

When I opened my eyes again, I was inside Academy of the End.

At a point before the game had even begun.

"...Fuck."
