◈ I Made a Tier List the Transcendents Are Obsessed With ◈

Chapter 30: Meticulous Bastards

──────

About a week passed.

As for the changes during that time, Judy had become cute, cuter, and even cuter...

"Wow. Favoritism."

"Shut up."

The vile woman pretending to be her new mother complained now and then, but I let it go in one ear and out the other.

As her once-skinny body filled out, Judy truly came to look like a well-raised young lady from every angle.

And there was one thing I learned from living with her.

Her personality was exactly like the original's.

"......Please don't scold big sis too much."

"Right! Why are you only like this with me?"

"Well, that was a little... I can't really help it at that point."

"Ugh."

She was kind by nature.

For someone who had grown up in such a harsh environment and seen all sorts of things, it was unbelievable how every word and action of hers was rooted in kindness.

That impossible-seeming personality was why I had loved the character even more.

And seeing the real thing before my eyes was simply moving.

"At this point, aren't you beyond being a daughter fool and entering daughter-idiot territory...?"

"I'll be a daughter idiot, so shut up."

"Seriously."

While Judy was endlessly kind, sharp, and adorable in every moment...

"You're always like this with me."

"......"

Wendy had started grumbling more often after that, filled with complaints and dissatisfaction.

I clearly remembered the slightly foolish but gentle girl who had listened well in the beginning.

But something seemed to have gone wrong.

A venomous expression kept appearing on her face. I couldn't believe it kept happening so often.

I considered the cause of that change for a moment, but there was only one conclusion.

"Are you jealous of a kid?"

"No, I'm not!"

"......You are, though."

No matter how I looked at it, she was no different from an eldest child sulking because they had gained a younger sibling.

The problem was that such jealous eldest children were usually very young.

Wendy was twenty.

And she was not even my daughter.

"If you're going to play a role, pick one. One minute you're pretending to be her new mother, and the next you're jealous of her..."

"Huh? I was only supposed to pick one?"

"......Good grief."

I sighed at the sight of her somehow becoming twice as scatterbrained.

Still, even if her head had gotten twice as empty, all her hard work had paid off.

"I got officially registered! Hehe."

Wendy smiled shyly as she held out the official Mage identification card issued by the Mage Tower.

It had taken quite some time, but she had finally succeeded in becoming a one-star Concept Mage.

"......Yeah. Good work."

Most of that achievement had come from my help, of course.

But it was not as if Wendy had not worked hard.

I nodded and patted her shoulder. Wendy awkwardly worked her lips, but she could not hide her joy.

It was a touching moment.

Whoooom!

"Whoa."

A wave of mana came from behind Wendy's shoulder, and we both had no choice but to turn toward it.

"......Huh?"

A thoroughly dumbfounded question slipped out of Wendy's mouth.

The confusion that had first come out as a sound gradually spread across her entire face.

She looked as if she could not understand the sight before her at all.

Whirrr...

Judy innocently played with a sphere of light made of mana.

Whenever the blue orb flowed along her body, the mana tickled her, making her burst into tee-hee laughter.

She looked as though the entire act was familiar and incredibly fun.

"No way."

Wendy stared at her, utterly speechless.

Her reaction was only natural.

The sphere Judy was playing with was the base of the "Circle," the foundation of System Magic.

And judging by its size and stability... it was nearly complete.

In other words, she was on the verge of breaking through as a Concept Mage.

Wendy had only barely reached one star after receiving my help, despite all her efforts until now.

Of course she was dumbfounded.

"Talent is unfair by nature."

"......"

And Judy was at the very peak of that unfair talent.

Even I, who knew that fact, was amazed.

* * *

The Gallery still treated me like some kind of urban legend, but at least I did not use that to intimidate anyone.

I might not be a justice-loving, justice-loving, justice-loving young man like Judy, the original protagonist, but I avoided doing what was wrong.

That was one of my small principles.

Even people who normally lived that way sometimes committed evil.

Anyway.

The source of the resources I had received for my own training and Wendy's Great Method was trading.

I spent my already abundant Points to receive relatively common resources from the Upper Realm and below.

Most of those trades were conducted through Sword Princess and No Existence.

I had no intention of looking for additional traders.

If neither of them could obtain something, it was a rare treasure beyond my means anyway.

I knew my place too well to get greedy for such things.

[ Is Lord Oz here by any chance? Hehe;; ] - Hello1

[ This is about what you announced in the Gallery. ] - Hello1

[ I thought it might be good to clear up any misunderstandings you have about the Security Bureau, so I contacted you. ] - Hello1

[ Oh, and the Marketplace link above is a gift unrelated to this matter. I'm quite a fan, you see. ] - Hello1

"Seriously. This is ridiculous."

The only feeling I got from looking at the direct messages was disbelief.

They were openly trying to make a request. It reeked of corruption.

Hello1

"Wow. Look at these meticulous bastards."

They had even prepared a burner account so their identities could not be traced.

They must have invited a lower-ranking Transcendent who had never been invited to the Gallery, given them Points to unlock its functions, and made them pull this bullshit.

"So this is how they want to play it."

The shadiness of the whole thing made me think that they really were those bastards from the original.

They were rotten to the core. What would they not do?

Even if I left them alone, they would naturally decline over time before meeting their end.

"......I can't tell which side sent this."

There was only one small thing I was curious about. Which side had sent the message?

It could genuinely have come from the Security Bureau, or it could have been a counterplot by the Precept Court.

There was also a small chance that it was a malicious scheme by a third party unrelated to either side... No, probably not.

"They're really having fun with this."

Either way, it stank to high heaven.

I shook my head and blocked the messages.

After all, in just a few days, all the corruption and wrongdoing they had committed would be exposed.

[ You around? ] - No Existence

"What does this one want now?"

I was about to close my private messages when another one came in.

This one, however, was worth answering.

Me > [ What is it? ]

[ Nothing much, but we found an anomalous space inside our sphere of influence. ] - No Existence

[ There's a bunch of interesting stuff there, so I thought I'd ask if you wanted to go together. ] - No Existence

[ If you can't come in your True Body, you can come in an avatar body. ] - No Existence

Me > [ Forget it;; What anomalous space? ]

"If I go there, I'll die, asshole."

The first problem was that I could not go in the first place. And even if I did, I would definitely die.

I was not even strong enough to be called powerful in the Lower Realm, let alone a Transcendent.

[ I figured you probably wouldn't be interested. ] - No Existence

[ Still, I thought I'd invite you. It'd be nice if you came sometime. ] - No Existence

[ Take care, big sis. ] - No Existence

The message ended with that damn "big sis."

Still, they had contacted me out of consideration, so I could not dislike them for it.

"......Will it take as long as it did in the original?"

The time it would take me to become a Transcendent was about the same time it had taken Judy in the original, or rather, the protagonist who had had a different name, to transcend.

By then, I thought I could become a Transcendent too. Of course, Judy would probably transcend at least twice as quickly. And Wendy... if things went well, she might be around the same.

I could probably keep pace with them if I pushed myself a little.

But if I did that, the road ahead would become uncertain.

In the end, I needed at least power comparable to a top-tier deity to intervene in the main storyline.

So I would take things slowly.

I would probably not meet Nirvakh until much later.

Still, I had grown fond of them over time, so part of me wanted to meet them once.

There had been a few more exchanges after all that uproar.

I received resources and such from them, while they received Points and some information from me.

As for that information, I was deceiving them, after all.

It was like compensation mixed with some guilt over that.

After benefiting from it several times, they began treating me the way they did now.

At first, even that had felt a little burdensome, but now I was used to it.

"......I shouldn't get used to it, though."

Adaptation was a frightening thing.
