How had things ended up like this?

Fighting the pleasant haze of intoxication creeping over her, Dieta thought back. They had certainly been having a lovely date. There had been the lavish dessert she had prepared herself, along with wine properly paired with it. The date had clearly been a success.

Until then, Dieta had not even been thinking about what came next. She had been too busy chatting with Najin, and simply watching him enjoy the food made her happy.

So where had things gone wrong?

It must have been then.

In the middle of their conversation, Dieta had casually slipped in a question.

Why won't you touch me?

Of course, she had not put it quite that bluntly. Still, it had been blunt enough to get the meaning across.

“Um.”

And Najin's response to that question was...

“Well, I...”

He avoided her gaze.

The hero of this age, who had faced down and cut down even the fearsome Witch of the Abyss, avoided her eyes as his words trailed off! He looked flustered, as though he was too embarrassed to answer at once.

This man can make that expression too?

Expressions said a great deal. Dieta was skilled at reading them, and Najin's expression told her plenty.

She immediately reached a conclusion.

‘He was the same as me?’

It was the expression of someone who did not know how to begin.

The instant she saw it, Dieta heard something inside her break with a snap.

What broke was probably, no, certainly her patience.

Because now she knew.

The desire was not one-sided. It went both ways.

Now that she knew they both wanted it, what was there left to hesitate over? Dieta tipped the whole bottle of wine into her mouth on the spot. She didn't have time to waste drinking this sort of alcohol!

Then she rose, slamming the wine bottle onto the table with a thump.

“Najin?”

She grabbed his arm.

“Get up.”

And that was how things had come to this.

Hic.

Dieta looked at the spectacular sight before her as she hiccupped.

Najin had been thrown into disarray by her pushing him down. If the Empire held a contest to choose the most upright and wholesome young man, Najin would win effortlessly. He had never shown anyone a disheveled side of himself.

And yet Najin looked disheveled before her.

It was a sight granted to her alone.

‘This is insane.’

Dieta swallowed hard.

How had things ended up like this?

It didn't matter. None of it mattered.

What mattered was what would happen from here. She had absolutely no experience, but Dieta considered herself an expert already.

‘Do you know how many romance novels I've read?’

And how many bonus chapters had she read after anonymously funding their authors with vast sums of money?

It was time to show off the knowledge she had built up through her secret hobby. Thinking so, Dieta reached out.

Click, rattle, click.

“...”

Click. Click. Click. Click.

“...”

“...”

The novels had never explained how to undo a Free Knight's belt.

As Dieta bowed her head and scratched at the belt with her nails, Najin could no longer stand to watch. At a suitably slow pace, so she wouldn't notice, he reached out and undid his own belt.

Click!

For a moment, Dieta nearly cheered, “Got it!” at the fact that she had successfully undone the belt. Thankfully, she only smiled.

She had merely cleared the first step. She still had a long way to go.

The lantern flickered.

Working by the dim light, she moved as diligently as she could, but it was rather agonizing for both of them. Dieta's touch was clumsy, and her awkward hands did not move things along so much as make them impatient.

In any case, quite some time passed.

With a strained sound, Dieta took off her clothes. For a while, the sound of fabric brushing against skin filled the room. The dress, worth whatever price one cared to name and surely handmade for her by artisans, was tossed beside her in a crumpled heap like rags.

At last, Dieta reached both arms behind her back.

Click, then rustle.

A slight sense of release.

And an even greater sense of embarrassment. The dim light that had felt merely stifling earlier now earned some of her gratitude. Hoping the darkness would take away her shame, Dieta let out a long breath.

...What now?

Her knowledge had run out.

This was usually where the scene skipped to morning, with birds going chirp chirp as the sun rose. Unfortunately, it was still the middle of the night, and several hours remained before dawn.

Hic.

Looking at Najin, who was still faithfully honoring her request to stay still, Dieta worked her lips.

Again, there was still a great deal of time before sunrise.

Which meant they could try all sorts of things.

...Hic.

Her hiccups still hadn't stopped.

2.

Was it the alcohol, or was it this situation?

Dieta felt as though she were dreaming.

It felt as if her body were floating in the air. And when she finally managed to take off Najin's clothes, Dieta felt even better. Her eyes widened, her lips parted slightly, and then she half-lidded those wide eyes as she glanced at Najin.

We really were the same, you and I.

She was embarrassed. It was her first time seeing it. But the excitement brought by this situation was a little greater than her embarrassment.

Dieta carefully spread her fingers. Merchant that she was, even in this situation, she measured the merchandise.

Then she brought her hand below her navel.

...Will this work?

It seemed like it might, barely.

“Mmm.”

She shifted little by little, readjusting her position. She tried wrapping both hands around it, then startled and quickly lowered her hands.

Quite some time had passed since they entered the room. It seemed no other preparation would be necessary.

“...”

“...”

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke. Only their violently pounding hearts filled the room. Dieta let out a deep breath, then slowly moved her body. After all, she was the one who had told him not to move.

After several attempts, she barely got the hang of it.

And just as she tried to move slowly.

Slip.

The clothes she had crumpled up and carelessly thrown aside took a timid revenge upon their owner.

Her knees were resting atop her soft silk dress. What was a silk dress? A garment that reduced friction. With no friction, applying force meant sliding in the direction of that force.

Her knee slipped sideways.

Faster than she anticipated, her body dropped downward.

A small gasp escaped her parted lips. Dieta's body trembled as she sat atop Najin.

‘What? What is this?’

White Sparks burst before her eyes. It felt as if fireworks had exploded in her head. Her eyes flew wide at the foreign sensation that pushed inside without giving her any time to prepare.

“Hhk, ah, mmm...”

As a voice threatened to escape against her will, she hurriedly covered her mouth with both hands.

She couldn't think of anything. Her mind had gone white. When she barely came to her senses, she released the breath caught in her throat.

“W-Wait.”

Dieta barely managed to force out her voice.

“Wait, stay still. Ah, stay still, please. Don't move, d-don't move at all. Hah, stay still. If you move, I-I'll really get angry. Really, okay?”

Her words were broken up by breaths, but her intention got across regardless. She had even forgotten about dropping the formalities and began using polite speech with Najin again. She had no room to think that far.

“Ahh...”

Dieta, who always walked with her back straight, was now bent forward, breathing heavily. Her thoughts wouldn't connect properly. Pain came first, but it was not pain alone.

It was a sensation she had never felt before.

Dieta lifted her head and looked at Najin. When she saw his expression, displaying superhuman patience even in this situation to obey her order not to move, she smiled without thinking.

The corners of her lips trembled.

Dieta reached out. Her slender fingers slipped between Najin's. Interlacing their fingers, she bent closer and whispered into his ear.

“You can move your hands.”

They held hands.

Feeling as though she couldn't move alone, Dieta gripped Najin's hand and moved slowly. Fireworks burst before her eyes every time she moved her body.

And when she came to her senses...

Her hiccups had stopped at some point.

In place of hiccups came heated breaths, and awkward, even more embarrassing sounds. At first, she tried to suppress them, but as time passed, the attempt became meaningless.

She no longer had room to think about anything else.

Beads of sweat ran down her neck, then down her collarbone. They passed her chest and fell below in drops. She felt heat. Like tea being poured into a cup, it felt as though something were gradually filling up inside her.

Drip. Drip.

How many drops of sweat had fallen? The instant the cup filled, her body spasmed briefly.

Dieta's body tipped forward. It tipped until she collapsed on top of Najin.

“Ah, ngh, ahhh...”

She smiled as she let out thin breaths. At last, she had crossed the line. Her mind wouldn't work properly amid the strange satisfaction and unfamiliar sensation. The corners of her lips naturally loosened.

Ah, had the world always been so beautiful?

It felt as though she had everything.

Lost in the lingering feeling, she raised her head. With her cheek pressed to Najin's chest, she looked up and met his eyes.

Then she realized one thing.

Her request was still in effect.

“Um, can you move now?”

The instant she said it, Dieta regretted it slightly.

“Hhk?!”

Najin suddenly raised his body. He released their clasped hands, gripped Dieta's shoulders, and met her eyes.

“...I wasn't sure how much longer I could hold back, so I was trying to be as careful as possible.”

“Y-Yes?”

“You started this.”

“Yes...?”

“Do you work tomorrow?”

“N-No? Tomorrow is a holiday... ah?!”

The corners of Dieta's eyes trembled.

What was this? What was this?

The hands gripping her shoulders were not as gentle as usual. They were rough hands. Feeling that they would never let her go, Dieta drew in a shaky breath.

“That is good.”

“Y-Yes, hic, yes?”

Hic.

The hiccups that had stopped began again.

3.

“W-Wait! Ah, ngh! Najin, wait!”

The night was long.

“Ahhhhh, w-wait, let me breathe. Let me breathe, I can't catch my breath...”

“Is that enough?”

“It isn't enough! It hasn't even been ten seconds yet!”

It was very long.

“D-Don't grab me there. I'm not running away, I'm not going anywhere, so could you please let go?!”

How long was it?

Dieta gave up counting time midway through. After a while, she couldn't even speak properly and could only struggle to hold onto her senses.

How should she describe it? It felt like waves crashing down. Whenever she tried to think, another wave swept away the sandcastle she had barely managed to build.

Then all that remained was wetness.

“Ahh?!”

Hic, Dieta exhaled the breath caught in her throat, her mouth falling open. Her body reacted regardless of her will. Drool flowed from her slightly parted lips, and whenever she tried to close her mouth, she had to let out a breath through the lips that parted again.

What drove her even crazier was this.

Far from hating any of it, she liked it so much she could barely stand it.

Even as her entire body slipped beyond her control, Dieta felt joy at that very fact. She couldn't put into words how it made her feel.

...The night was still long.

At some point, she gave up thinking.

Heat. Warmth. Fingers brushing her ribs. Her waist held tight. The swaying view. Gentle hands sweeping back her sweat-soaked hair. And then, again, and again.

Her laughter mixed with her moans.

Dieta thought to herself.

It seemed she needed to add one more line to the answer to the question, “Who am I?”

Dieta wrapped both arms around Najin's neck. Then she buried her face against the back of his neck.

Come to think of it, someone had once said this.

The more strictly a person managed themself, the greater the pleasure they felt when they finally let themself go.

Recalling the words of a famous philosopher, Dieta's body trembled.

It was exactly as they had said.

Dieta gave herself over to the crashing waves.

Author's Note

As an aside, when you work as an author, there are times when you find yourself wanting to write only the parts you are good at. There are also times, though rarely, when you skim over the parts you are not confident about. The reason I bring this up is that I have never written a scene like this before... Which means I wasn't confident.

So I wondered for a while.

Should I just gloss over it?

Or should I not write it at all?

If you don't write this sort of thing well, doesn't it become incredibly cringe??

Still, this is a side story... right? The phrase side story has a certain power. It gave me the courage to think that, with the power of a side story, I could write scenes I had never written in my entire life as an author. So I worked hard on it.

I don't know whether it came out well...

In any case, I hope you enjoyed reading it...!!!!
