◈ I Stream as a Hobby ◈
Chapter 5: An Explanation
──────
[Today's silhouette of Empress Wayo's hand]
(A hand's shadow flashing past)
Damn lol
-Hmm... is it that impressive?
-Isn't that just a skinny hand?
[Where are all the fuckers who called Empress Wayo an 84 kg Sterak??]
(Wayo's shadow flashing past)
How does that look like Sterak lmao
-Isn't that just normal?
-Who's Wayo?
-Did Wayo turn her camera on?
ㄴ She's doing a livestream for Christmas
[Wayodogs are jerking it to shadows, fuck;;]
You're making such a fucking fuss, seriously
-lmaoooo
-fr
-Never thought I'd live to see people jerking it to shadows, fuck lmao
[One thing I like about Wayo, though]
She really was on a business trip lmao
-fr
-She actually went on a business trip over Christmas lol
-Where the hell sends you on a three-day overnight business trip, though?
ㄴ Dun?no
ㄴ Rumor is she works for a major corporation
ㄴ What major corporation sends people on a three-day Christmas business trip lmao
[What's that watch on the table, though?]
(The watch on Wayo's table)
Looks nice lol. Do women wear watches like that?
-It does look pretty slick lol
-Isn't that a luxury watch?
ㄴ Dun?no
[Is this the watch on Wayo's table?]
(Watch information obtained from GPT)
Is this for real??
-??
-?
-Seriously?
-Is that the same one?
[Is that watch real?]
Does it really cost that much?
-fr what the hell kind of watch is that;
-That's my annual salary, fuck lmao
ㄴ Annual salary?
ㄴ Convenience store clerk spotted lmao
-An annual salary is a stretch, but it's about as much as my apartment deposit...
ㄴ Harry Potter spotted lmao
ㄴ It's a 1.5-room apartment, asshole
[What makes Empress Wayo a fucking legend]
(One of the occasional Augment ARAM party auctions)
Wears a watch like that but still shakes people down for pocket change in Augment ARAM auctions
-Ah...
-Money-crazed bitch lmao
-That's how she makes her money lol
[Empress Wayo really must work at a major corporation on the side]
Most office workers couldn't afford that, could they;
-How the fuck could an office worker buy a watch like that
-Maybe she runs an online store or something
ㄴ Yeah, that's actually possible
[Doesn't that mean she's just born rich, not working for a major corporation?]
How old is Wayo, wearing a watch like that?
-Isn't she in her mid-twenties?
ㄴ Late twenties, I think?
ㄴ Nah, early twenties
-How fucking old is she lmao
ㄴ She won't tell us, so nobody knows lol
ㄴ Seriously, how old is she??
[Wayo is 17]
(Wayo's wiki page)
That's what the wiki says, yeah...
-17, my ass
-Even a small-time bitch like this has a wiki lmao
ㄴ Hey, hey, hey;;
-17 is pushing it, but she's probably about 25
[Empress Wayo just made Trending Best lmao]
(A post titled "Watch photo from a VTuber who took Christmas off and went to Xtel.jpg")
Empress Wayo's a big name now lol
-That fucking title lmao
-Top-tier fucking clickbait lmao
-Are you an actual journalist?
-Facts are facts...
* * *
"Everyone, let's calm down first."
Honestly, the complete disaster in chat caught me a little off guard as soon as I started streaming, but it wasn't hard to figure out what was going on.
Apparently, the watch that had briefly appeared on the table during my livestream had become a hot topic on the forums...
I felt a little wronged, though.
'Angelina, what's this watch?'
'Oh~ That one came from a sponsor a while back~'
It was just one of the many watches I'd received from sponsors.
I had a whole watch showroom at home, for crying out loud.
I just wore whichever one caught my fancy that day.
The one I'd worn on my last business trip happened to be an expensive sponsored watch.
I hadn't known it cost that much, either.
Watches all looked pretty much the same. How was I supposed to tell them apart?
Anyway, that had saddled my stream with a strange new meme.
-Lady Wayo says we should calm down
-We bow before the great, born-rich Wayo...
-It's almost time for you to head to work, Director
The third-generation chaebol heir meme.
I'd mentioned having a day job, and the times I went to and left that job were all over the place.
Add that watch to the mix, and...
The joke was basically, "You little shit, aren't you a third-generation chaebol heir who got a job through family connections and only shows up whenever you feel like it?"
Of course...
"No, I'm not a third-generation chaebol heir."
I was firmly denying that ridiculous misunderstanding.
Were they nuts? Who were they calling a third-generation chaebol heir?
I was a self-made success who'd started out middle class. Had any of you started working at six?
-Then what's with the watch??
-It didn't look fake...
-Please explain
"I live by YOLO, so I took out a loan to buy it. It's my only watch, so I treasure it..."
-It had scratches lol
-YOLO, my ass
-Fucker, we've already finished analyzing everything lmao. You're busted
-We don't have to donate anymore, right?
-Just try collecting money through Augment ARAM again
There was one bit of good news, though.
The watch was expensive, but it wasn't ultra-high-end.
I couldn't tell watches apart, but I'd at least made sure I knew which expensive ones absolutely couldn't get scratched.
This one fell into an awkward category: the most expensive kind that still fell just short of that line.
It cost a lot, but an ordinary person could still buy one if they really stretched their finances.
Besides, honestly, what was wrong with owning an expensive watch?
It wasn't like I'd committed a crime.
If anything, I was a patriot who'd paid a ridiculous amount in taxes.
Thinking about it that way, I started wondering whether I even needed to explain myself.
It was only a meme, after all. Surely nobody actually thought I was a third-generation chaebol heir.
"Hah... Everyone, quiet down before I call Attorney Kim."
-Gasp
-What
-Butler Kim omg
-Is that your family's law firm?
"Yes. You could get sued by my law firm's order of knights, made up of five judges and thirty-five division chief prosecutors."
-Any mages?
-Five judges omg
-Even Trump would get arrested, fuck;;
-That's national-level power lmao
-Wa Jae-yong lmao
As a little aside, there really was an Attorney Kim.
I needed someone to look over contracts and things, didn't I?
Not that I'd actually sue anyone over this.
"All right~ Today's game is..."
Anyway, it was time to wrap up the chaebol talk.
I'd started the stream, so I ought to play a game.
-Ah;
-Thank you for all your hard work.
-All right, break it up~
-Let's wrap things up and get back to our day jobs
"You fucking..."
I'd secretly been pleased that the forum attention had brought my viewer count up to 400.
Then 150 people left in an instant.
-lmaooooooooo
-These Just Chatting tourists could run a marathon 👍👍
-Can we ban every fucker who just left?
If I'd had a moderator, I'd honestly have wanted them to at least take down some names.
Most of those people had probably come from the forums.
"Anyway... let's go ahead and start the game."
With that, I launched it.
This time, it was a Korean masterpiece: a hardcore battle royale where a hundred players were randomly placed on one of nine maps to fight for survival...
[Anon, thank you for donating 1,000 won!]
You fucking bitch, you call yourself a variety-game VTuber? If you're only gonna play fucking Lel and fucking PUBG, drop that label, you lying sack of shit
ㄴ Can't you seriously ban comments like that?
"No one even said that in chat, you fucker."
-lmaoooo
-lmaooooo
-Anons always deliver the hard truths 👍👍
-PUBG again?? That's a bit much
"You say that, but deep down, you like Leore and PUBG. What's so fun about watching shitty games?"
-??
-?
-Who the fuck said that
-It's fun watching you play shitty games??
"What if I bring an actual boring-as-shit game?"
-Then we won't watch, obviously
-Time for bed
-You're unfit to be a streamer, yeah;;
-Pick a good one, asshole
"Fucking self-employment..."
They hated this, they hated that.
Was I playing Lel and PUBG because I wanted to?
...Well, I couldn't say that had nothing to do with it.
But whenever I brought a game, they judged the hell out of it.
How many times had I carefully picked out what I thought was a hidden gem, only to get cursed out for bringing a shitty game?
After enough of that, I'd gradually started sticking to proven games.
And if I was going to play a proven game, wasn't I better off just playing Lel? That was all that had led me to launch it more often.
[Anon, thank you for donating 1,000 won!]
Lady Wayo, I heard CHZZK is holding a PUBG tournament. Aren't you going to enter?
"Don't call me Lady, fuck. I'm not entering."
It was a platform tournament, exclusively for streamers.
Simply taking part would be a huge help in getting your name out there, and it offered plenty of benefits, including connections with other streamers.
As the super-rookie VTuber I was, I'd received a few invitations myself, but I'd turned them all down.
There were several reasons I didn't enter tournaments.
First of all...
-Just fucking enter one
-Stop telling her to fucking enter;;
-She won't enter if she doesn't want to
-I watch Wayo because she doesn't enter those??
-Fuck off to a big-name streamer
That reaction.
For some reason, my viewers were particularly divided on the issue.
My guess was that they felt some strange pride in a channel that had grown without collabs with big-name streamers.
Anyway, if that was the first reason, the second was that I didn't want to be tied to a schedule.
A tournament meant practicing as a team and playing scrims, didn't it?
For Lel, that meant five streamers having to coordinate their schedules. Not only did I not want to be tied down like that, but I also wasn't particularly interested in making new streamer connections.
Besides, I was happy enough with the progress my channel had made.
"Still, since you've all spoken up, I'll bring a different game tomorrow."
-What about today, then?
-So we're supposed to watch fucking PUBG?
-At least let viewers join;
"Viewer games are still on cooldown... Should I just launch Lel and open the virtual racetrack instead?"
-Oh lol
-Go go go go
-Let's get in there lmao
Chat came alive when I offered to open betting with channel points earned by watching the stream.
These dopamine addicts... They were excited to get their fix by betting points that weren't even real money.
"I'm right on the verge of Diamond, too. Betting on whether I win should be fun."
-?
-You're Emerald 3?
-Do you know what "on the verge" means?
"Well... I'll get there soon enough, won't I?"
The viewers were missing something.
I wasn't just Emerald 3. I was Emerald 3 with 80 LP.
In other words, I could call myself Emerald 2-in-waiting.
Rounded up, that was practically Diamond, so as far as I was concerned, my rank was already Diamond.
"All right, let's gooo."
-Sigh
-Go go go go go
-Anyway, I'm taking the long odds lol
And so, with everyone in good spirits, I opened the virtual racetrack.
I hadn't been able to play Lel during my overseas business trip over the past few days, so I queued up with a fair bit of excitement.
"What should I play?"
-Just play Jax
-Is there any point in you picking fifth? You just brainlessly pick a melee duelist
-Upvote if you think this game's already lost lmao
I'd confidently moved myself down to fifth pick and was giving some serious thought to which champion I should play when...
Bang!!
The door to my streaming room flew open.
"!!"
Startled, I spun around.
There was no one in my house who would throw open a door without knocking.
-??
-What was that?
Before I could recover enough to mute my microphone...
"Sis! Didn't you bring me a souvenir?"
A deep male voice filled the room.
And, by extension, carried right through my streaming microphone.
-??
-?
-Who's that??
"Ah."
I couldn't even see the chat behind me, but I could guess how it was reacting.
"Wh-what are you doing?"
"Just shut up for a second..."
...I'd only just finished explaining myself.
It looked like the game would have to wait a little longer.
Footnotes:
- The Harry Potter jab compares the viewer's apartment to Harry's cupboard under the stairs. A Korean “1.5-room” apartment falls between a studio and a full one-bedroom.
- A chaebol is a large, family-controlled Korean business group. “Wa Jae-yong” combines Wayo with Lee Jae-yong, the Samsung heir and executive.
