◈ Monster Livestream Star ◈
Chapter 1: Birth (1)
──────
A quiet, damp cave.
Drops fell from the ceiling, drip, drip, while moss grew across the floor. Within that cave, a life was about to be born.
A tiny concentration of the mana filling the world took shape and gave birth to a monster.
[A slime has been created.]
A slime.
It was a low-level monster, requiring an amount of mana infinitely close to zero to be born.
The pale green slime, soft-looking and squishy, gently swayed in place as it searched for food by instinct.
Wobbling along little by little, the pale green slime soon reached some moss.
Instinctively sensing that it could nourish it, the slime absorbed and digested the moss, which was much the same color as itself.
Then, at that moment.
The slime thought.
'I want... more.'
The first thought the slime had upon being born.
[Entity possessing intelligence above the required level detected.]
The system that governed the world took notice of that thought.
'Huh?'
The newly born slime reacted to the sudden voice.
[Requirements met. Streaming privileges granted.]
[Viewpoint-switching privileges granted.]
[Chat function granted.]
The voice continued speaking to the slime.
But the slime did not understand what it was.
Rather than worry about something it did not know, the slime simply focused on eating moss and filling itself with nutrients.
Meanwhile, the system's flat voice continued to ring out.
[Target's visual ability: Unable to verify.]
[Perspective locked to third person until visual ability is acquired.]
[Would you like to begin streaming?]
The slime did not answer the question. It simply kept eating the moss around it.
Moss was absorbed into the slime's body one piece at a time.
And whenever more nutrients entered it, the slime's thoughts became more varied.
'It's tasty... I'm full. I don't want to eat anymore.'
It was no longer acting solely on instinct. It properly recognized its own condition and consciously stopped itself.
Now full, the slime finally took an interest in the voice it had heard.
Detecting the slime's intent, the system asked again.
[Would you like to begin streaming?]
'What's... streaming?'
A natural question.
The slime had never even heard the word streaming before, so the system answered.
[Streaming is showing yourself to others.]
'Showing?'
The slime had no vision, so it had no concept of seeing.
There was no way to explain it properly like this.
[Reviewing the target's special circumstances.]
[Initiating partial knowledge injection.]
Crackle!
Tiny sparks flew as the concepts of seeing, hearing, and speaking, along with basic knowledge about streaming, were injected into the slime.
With this new knowledge, the slime immediately grew curious.
'Why is it dark?'
It wondered why it could not see anything.
The system answered.
[The target currently has no visual function.]
[Visual function can be acquired through growth.]
Having given the answer the slime wanted, the system asked again.
[Would you like to begin streaming?]
The slime could not fully understand what streaming was.
More than that, it wanted to experience the sensation of seeing for itself.
Having recognized that the system was something that taught it many things, the slime vaguely agreed with it.
'Okay.'
[Beginning stream.]
[Please set a nickname.]
A nickname was the name used to identify oneself while streaming.
One could use the anonymous function when watching other streams, but a nickname had to be set to stream.
'What should it be?'
The slime did not decide and asked the system instead.
Recognizing the slime's unusual circumstances, the system considered previous nickname entries and gave it some choices.
[Recommended nicknames are as follows. 1. I Always Put It in My Mouth First 2. Malangi 3. †Future Kaiser†]
Among the knowledge about streaming injected by the system were both how to use streaming and the concept of nicknames used on streams.
And of the three suggested names, the slime chose the one that sounded most interesting.
'Malangi[1]?'
[Would you like to use Malangi? Your nickname can be changed later.]
'Okay! Malangi!'
[Your nickname has been set as Malangi.]
[What would you like your title to be?]
Having received basic knowledge about streaming, the slime set the title of its stream.
'I Want to See.'
That was what it wanted most at the moment.
And so, the slime's stream began.
+++
"Huh. Is there nothing worth watching?"
A volcano where boiling lava flowed.
The Fire Dragon that ruled over a place no ordinary creature could survive was bored again today.
It had been a long time since anyone had invaded its territory to challenge it.
The only thing it could do to kill time was watch other monsters stream through the system.
But there was no stream that caught the Fire Dragon's interest right now.
Of course there was not.
After being shut inside a volcano for over six hundred years watching streams, it would have been stranger to find anything fresh.
"They're all the same. Boring, boring."
Whirr.
The Fire Dragon operated the system window and looked through the stream directory.
Most of the listings showed miscellaneous monsters hunting prey.
Others were streams of monsters doing bizarre things because they genuinely had nothing better to do.
"That stupid troll is smashing ice again today."
The Fire Dragon frowned at the Blizzard Troll's stream, titled 【Today's Break Lots of Ice Challenge】.
"It really has nothing else to do. Kids these days have no spirit, no spirit at all."
In the past, there had even been monsters who streamed themselves jumping into the middle of two warring nations and wiping them out, only to be subjugated afterward. But no monsters did streams like that these days, so the Fire Dragon continued searching with a bored expression.
Then an unfamiliar, strange title caught its eye.
"I Want to See? What is this?"
A title made up of just four Korean characters.
An ambiguous title.
Normally, stream titles were covered in outlandish promises or special symbols such as ☆★@ to attract other monsters. Among those streams, that simple title drew the Fire Dragon's attention.
"Don't tell me... a new pervert has appeared? No, why would they put that here!"
The Fire Dragon recalled one bizarre stream from a member of its own species, something that made it click its tongue.
“Hoho, what I'll show you today is my reverse scale[2]~”
▶Ooh! Ooooooh! Big sis! Big sis!!!
▶Hngh, I'm dying~
▶What the hell do you mean you're dying? You're getting turned on by some scales? LOL
▶Silence!!!!!! How dare an anonymous coward find fault with the beauty of a reverse scale! The reverse scale of a fresh virgin dragon is practically sacred, you know!!!
▶What kind of monster has faith? LOL
▶You're getting kicked.
▶[Anonymous 563 has been removed from the stream.]
[Noblesse Fire]▶Tsk, tsk, tsk. Young people these days, honestly! They have no shame at all! Showing off their reverse scales so carelessly...
▶Kick the boomer toooooo!!!
▶[Noblesse Fire has been removed from the stream.]
“Oh my, thank you, boys~ But now that you've seen my reverse scale... I'm embarrassed~”
▶Ah! Big sis, I love it! I love it! I really love it!
▶Wing dance, let's go~!
▶[Gentleman Phoenix has donated 50,000 coins.]
“Eek! Phoenix oppa! I love it!”
And the pathetic, idiotic reactions of those who went wild over that stream.
Of course, there was a tacit agreement that streams likely to offend other species would only appear in a separate, specific category.
But the stream the Fire Dragon was looking at had broken that tacit agreement and appeared in the general directory.
"Who the hell does this think it is!"
A vulgar stream had no place in the sacred general directory.
Filled with righteous determination to enter and give it some well-earned, seasoned advice, the Fire Dragon entered the stream titled 【I Want to See】.
And what came into view was...
"...What? A slime?"
It was a third-person stream showing a slime in a cave.
For a moment, the Fire Dragon wondered if it had read the stream settings wrong.
An icon at the far right of the stream indicated whether it was in first-person or third-person perspective.
First person showed the streamer's view, while third person focused on the streamer.
The screen was set to third person.
Yet the stream showed nothing but one tiny slime.
"Don't tell me this slime is the streamer?"
It was strange and unbelievable.
Because there was no way a slime could be streaming.
Not a Slime King or Slime Queen, but an ordinary slime.
Streaming normally required a certain level of intelligence.
But ordinary slimes lived almost entirely by instinct and had barely any intelligence at all.
'But that slime is streaming?'
The Fire Dragon immediately used the chat system.
When a message was written, a translucent window that only the streamer could see would appear before them and convey the words.
[Noblesse Fire]▶What kind of shitty concept is this? Have you completely lost your touch?
The Fire Dragon immediately started needling it.
In Noblesse Fire's six hundred years of chat experience, a slime streaming was something that could never happen.
So it provoked the slime, intending to get this shitty concept stream taken down at once.
But the slime merely moved its squishy body in place.
It was hard to see even that as a response to the Fire Dragon's chat rather than a natural reaction.
[Noblesse Fire]▶Playing dumb like crazy LOL. You think anyone's going to watch this crap?
The Fire Dragon wrote even more provocative messages, but the slime did not react at all.
'It's ignoring me even after all that?'
The slime showed no response whatsoever to the sudden provocative chat, leaving the Fire Dragon even more puzzled.
There was good reason for that.
Messages written in chat were displayed in system script that monsters could understand.
In other words, one had to see them to understand them.
It was impossible for a slime whose vision had not yet opened to see the chat and react to it at all.
Then it happened.
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶Ho ho, the shut-in old-fart, sanctimonious dragon who lives on a heated floor is throwing a fucking fit in a tiny nobody stream.
A chat message appeared that indirectly insulted the Fire Dragon.
The Fire Dragon recognized who it was just from the way it spoke.
Streaming nickname: Gothic Luxury Bone.
A Bone Dragon, an undead dragon.
Since it did not need to eat, sleep, or relieve itself, it spent all its time wandering through streams. It was an even more entrenched viewer than the Fire Dragon.
[Noblesse Fire]▶LOL, a denture made of nothing but bones is talking shit?
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶Have you stayed on that heated floor so long your brain turned to mush? I've got healthy teeth that have never fallen out.
[Noblesse Fire]▶Healthy teeth, my ass. What would some idiot too stubborn to die know?
Normally, their conversation would continue until the Bone Dragon complained that it was undead discrimination.
But the Bone Dragon had something more important to deal with.
Protecting fresh newbies.
To the Bone Dragon, which felt even more bored than the Fire Dragon, newbies were precious possibilities and a source of new stimulation.
So the Bone Dragon immediately began soothing the newbie.
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶Malangi, I'm sorry. That shut-in loser dragon has always had a completely fucked personality, so please don't take it too seriously...
Of course, the Bone Dragon's chat did not reach the slime either.
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶Malangi?
[Noblesse Fire]▶It ignored me no matter how much I provoked it.
The Bone Dragon wondered whether this was a new newbie with orichalcum-level mental fortitude, then finally realized that the thing on screen was a slime.
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶??? Wait, a slime? A slime is streaming?
[Noblesse Fire]▶You only noticed now?
"Tsk, tsk, tsk. Its head is so empty that it's this absentminded."
While the Bone Dragon was shocked and the Fire Dragon clicked its tongue, the slime began moving, wobble, wobble.
It had digested the moss it had absorbed and was looking for more nutrients.
The Fire Dragon and Bone Dragon watched the scene for the time being.
For one hour.
[Noblesse Fire]▶It's a real slime.
[Gothic Luxury Bone]▶It's just a slime.
The Bone Dragon and Fire Dragon accepted that the slime was simply a slime.
"Has the system gone bad?"
As the Fire Dragon began questioning something else, newcomers arrived in the chat room, which had contained only two viewers, to peek at a new stream.
▶???? Why is there a slime?
▶Did someone transform?
▶Ah! S*x!
▶No, why is a slime streaming? LOL
A strange title and a strange slime streamer.
The newcomers stayed in the stream out of curiosity and watched the slime.
As all sorts of comments and speculation flew around, the slime softly swayed, wobble, wobble, and ate moss at regular intervals.
Watching the slime, one viewer said:
▶...Ah, this is healing.
Healing.
It did not mean mending bodily wounds, but giving peace to the heart.
Once one person said it, others who agreed began typing in chat.
▶For real.
▶True, it's damn cute.
▶Hmm... Is it really that cute?
▶What if a wild animal comes along and gulps the slime down?
▶Ugh, can the chaos freak piss off already?
▶Nope LOL.
As one viewer after another simply watched the swaying slime, someone made a plausible guess.
▶Maybe it can't see the chat?
▶Are you brainless? How would it start a stream if it couldn't see?
▶Yeah, but it did start one, didn't it? And we're watching it, aren't we?
▶Here we go again, another self-proclaimed expert.
▶Ah! S*x!
Viewers from other species had never paid much attention to such miscellaneous trivia about slime ecology.
When the most credible guess came out, someone quick to act spoke up.
▶Hang on, I'll go ask Jiggly Queen.
Footnotes:
[1] Malangi: A cute name built from malangmalang, “soft and squishy.”
[2] Reverse scale: A dragon's vulnerable scale in East Asian dragon lore.
