Chapter 26: New Encounter (2)
──────
The leader of the bandit gang, who had gone hunting with Hawein, was bewildered by the sight before him.
“What are you doing now?”
Pant! Pant! Pant!
Boing! Boing!
Seugol lay sprawled on the ground, breathing heavily, while Slime happily bounced atop Def’s head.
“Ah, Boss, Hawein. You’re back? Hehe, did you catch a deer?”
At Def’s hopeful question, the leader pointed to Hawein, who was carrying their prey behind him.
“We caught a rabbit.”
“A rabbit...”
Hawein gave the disappointed Def a dark smile.
“Heh, catching a rabbit is still better than nothing. You can’t even catch a rabbit.”
“But a deer would’ve given us more to eat...”
“Pfft. Pig.”
“Don’t complain, Def. More importantly, explain what happened here.”
“Yes, Boss. Well...”
Def told them what had happened while the two were out hunting.
After hearing the explanation, both of them looked at Seugol with disbelief.
“Seugol, did you lose to a Slime?”
“Pfft! You’re weaker than a Slime, pfft!”
Pant! Pant! “I didn’t lose, Boss! Hawein! How dare you laugh at me!”
“But you lost.”
“I didn’t!”
The bandit leader asked Def, “Then why is it sitting on your head?”
“Uh... I-I don’t know. Hehe, maybe it likes being on my head.”
Boing!
“It sure won’t get down.”
‘Too nimble for Seugol to catch, huh...’
Seugol looked pathetic, sprawled on the ground after failing to catch even a Slime. But the bandit leader knew Seugol’s abilities well.
Seugol should have been able to catch an ordinary Slime with ease.
Moving quickly despite his small build was Seugol’s specialty.
A Slime with unexpected agility, yet friendly enough to play atop Def’s head.
‘This could really fetch a price.’
Having a special trait worth boasting about when showing off merchandise naturally raised its value.
The bandit gang immediately began preparing their meal with the rabbit they had caught.
They cleaned the rabbit, skewered it on sticks made from trimmed branches, and roasted it over the fire.
‘Roasted rabbit!’
Slime watched the rabbit sizzling over the flames.
Slime had constantly eaten luxurious, nutritious food at the mansion.
But that did not mean Slime had come to dislike food like roasted rabbit, which took less effort to prepare and did not taste as good by comparison.
Slime had gained the ability to taste rather than judging things solely by their nutritional value, but Slime was still a Slime.
In the end, Slime could eat anything without disliking it.
Once the rabbit was cooked, the bandits each took a skewer and tore into their rabbit.
They silently chewed their rabbit.
‘I want some too!’
Slime bounced around Def.
“W-What is it? Do you want some of this?”
‘Yes!’
Boing!
“N-No. This is mine.”
When Def refused, Slime stopped bouncing and lowered its body slightly.
It looked as though Slime had bowed its head in disappointment.
“Uh... Want this instead?”
Def pulled a piece of fruit from the bag where he had stored them and placed it before Slime.
‘Fruit!’
Slime had eaten fallen fruit as well as rabbits and deer while passing through the Blue Elf Forest, so Slime immediately climbed onto the fruit and absorbed it.
“Wow, so that’s how Slimes eat.”
“Hey! You idiot! Why the hell are you giving fruit to that damned Slime?”
Still unable to get over losing to Slime, Seugol stood up and snapped at Def.
“B-But we’re the only ones eating rabbit, and Slime isn’t eating anything. Slime looks hungry.”
“Hungry, my ass! A Slime can just eat the grass growing nearby! We already picked all the fruit around here, so we’ll have to walk a long way to find more!”
“Pfft. Def is the one who picks fruit anyway. You’re too short to pick any.”
“Shut up!”
“That’s enough, Seugol. Just eat quietly.”
“S-Sorry, Boss.”
Seugol, who had been complaining, immediately sat back down at the leader’s words.
“Def. You can give Slime more fruit. But replenish it tomorrow.”
“Yes, Boss. S-Slime, want another one?”
Boing!
Slime received three pieces of fruit from Def.
▶That human bastard doesn’t know anything. Bring out the “steak” already!
▶Agh LOL This isn’t some big human nest LOL
▶One rabbit per person LOL I eat better than this.
The viewers had enjoyed Seugol’s ridiculous struggle to catch Slime. Now they were enjoying the broadcast by mocking the bandits’ meal, which was so different from the mansion’s food.
+++
Crackle, crackle.
In the dark night, only the campfire burned, giving off light.
Since this area had no monsters nearby besides wild animals, the bandit gang lit only a campfire before everyone went to sleep.
Then Def woke and sat up.
‘Hungry.’
A single rabbit had not been enough to fill Def’s large body, and hunger had woken him in the middle of the night.
As Def sat up from the ground, Slime, who had been sleeping on Def’s stomach, rolled off.
‘?’
Slime naturally woke up too after suddenly rolling down.
Boing!
“Ah, you’re awake? Sorry.”
After Def apologized to Slime, his hunger returned.
Grrrrumble!
“Ugh.”
Def rubbed his chubby stomach and muttered quietly.
“I’m hungry... I want meat.”
It was a very quiet murmur.
But Slime heard it.
‘Hungry? You can’t be hungry!’
Slime knew how difficult and painful it was to be hungry.
That was why Slime wanted to solve the problem when Def, who had given Slime fruit, said he was hungry.
Boing! Boing!
Def tilted his head as Slime suddenly began bouncing.
“Huh? Are you hungry too? Is it because you only ate fruit?”
The fruit Def had given Slime was enough to satisfy Slime’s hunger, but Def had no way of knowing that.
Boing! Boing!
Slime moved a short distance away from Def and used Perception.
‘Found it!’
Slime sensed a deer nearby and headed toward it.
“Huh? W-Where are you going?”
‘This way! This way!’
Slime stopped for a moment, keeping some distance from Def as Slime bounced in place.
“Do you want me to follow you?”
‘Yes!’
Boing!
Though they couldn't communicate verbally, Def felt as though Slime was calling for him.
“W-Wait a moment.”
Def stood up and searched through the luggage.
“It should be in here... Ah, found it.”
What Def pulled out was a Magic Stone Lantern.
It was a magical tool that absorbed Mana from a magic stone placed inside its base and emitted light.
Def put one of the remaining magic stones from the luggage inside and gave it a light shake. A gentle glow flowed from the lantern.
Def approached Slime with the lantern in hand.
‘A lantern!’
Slime was happy to see something familiar.
Slime had seen servants carrying them around the mansion a few times late at night.
As Def came closer, Slime moved a little farther toward the direction where the deer could be sensed.
“L-Let’s go together.”
Holding the Magic Stone Lantern, Def followed Slime.
‘Where are we going?’
Def was following Slime without much thought, but wondered where they were headed.
‘Did it want more fruit? There were three more in the luggage.’
Remembering Slime eating fruit, Def thought Slime might be leading him to pick more.
‘Might as well pick a lot while we’re at it.’
Def was hungry, so he thought he could fill his stomach with fruit during the night and replenish their supplies at the same time.
It would have been reasonable to wonder how Slime knew where fruit was, but Def did not think that deeply.
While Def was thinking that.
Boing! Boing! Boing!
Slime suddenly sped up.
“What is it? S-Slow down!”
Def hurriedly followed the suddenly speeding Slime.
And at the end of the path Slime led him down...
Grrrrr!
Two wolves were tearing into a deer’s neck and legs.
‘W-Wolves! What do I do?!’
At the sight of the wolves, Def hastily drew the sword at his waist.
Boing!
Meanwhile, Slime happily hopped at the sight of the wolves.
‘Meat! There’s more of it!’
There was a simple reason Slime had suddenly sped up.
Slime had kept tracking the deer through Perception when it was suddenly attacked by two other living creatures.
And when Slime arrived after speeding up, their identities were revealed.
Far from being afraid after discovering two wolves, Slime was happy that there was more edible “meat.”
Boing! Boing!
Slime immediately approached the wolves.
“Ah! D-Dangerous, Slime!”
Def cried out in alarm as Slime headed toward the wolves.
Grrrrr!
The wolves, who had just been about to eat the deer they had hunted, bared their teeth at the suddenly appearing Slime.
A puny-looking Slime had suddenly appeared while they were about to eat. From the wolves’ perspective, it was bound to be irritating.
Then.
Boiiiing!
Slime struck one of the growling wolves with Bounce Tackle.
Craaaaaack!
The attack, powerful enough to take down a deer in one blow, landed squarely on the wolf’s jaw.
With the sound of its jawbone breaking, the wolf’s body flipped over.
The wolf collapsed in a single hit, unable even to twitch.
“Huh?!”
Not only Def, but even the closest wolf stared wide-eyed at Slime.
Then the remaining wolf, sensing a threat to its life, turned to flee at once.
But.
Boiiiing!
Craaaaaack!
Slime used Bounce Tackle even faster.
The moment Slime landed, it struck the wolf’s jaw before it could fully turn around.
The remaining wolf fell as well, its jaw broken.
It took less than ten seconds for both wolves to fall.
It was an unbelievable sight that had happened in such a short time.
Def blinked, wondering whether what he had seen was real.
But nothing before his eyes changed.
Boing! Boing!
‘Meat! We got meat!’
Slime approached Def.
An ordinary person might have felt wary or frightened after seeing Slime kill two wolves in an instant.
But.
“T-That’s amazing.”
Def was innocent for someone so large, so pure admiration came out instead of fear.
‘Amazing!’
Happy at Def’s praise, Slime bounced back and forth between the dead wolves and the deer.
‘Meat!’
That alone was enough for Def to understand what Slime was trying to say.
Grrrrumble.
“Ah!”
Never mind Slime instantly taking down two wolves. There were now three animals in front of Def that could be eaten once prepared.
One deer and two wolves.
Def’s growling stomach told him what to do next.
“Meat.”
‘Meat!’
Def dragged the deer and wolves back to the hideout.
“H-Hehehe. Meat. Thank you, Slime.”
Boing! Boing!
Grinning at the thought of roasting meat, Def thanked Slime.
After arriving at the hideout, Def placed the deer and wolves nearby, then shook the sleeping leader.
“Boss, wake up.”
“Mmm... What is it?”
“L-Look at this.”
“What am I supposed to look at... Huh?”
The leader rubbed his eyes as he woke, then saw the two dead wolves and the deer.
“Don’t tell me you caught these?”
The leader looked at Def in surprise.
Def was strong enough for his large build, but he was not nimble. The leader could not believe Def had brought back prey this large.
Def smiled innocently and shook his head.
“No, not me...”
‘He must have gone with Hawein or Seugol. That makes sense.’
“Slime caught them!”
“What?”
