◈ My Girlfriend Returned as a Dragon ◈
Chapter 7: Oppa, How on Earth Did You Do That?
──────
After a simple lunch, we arrived at the D-rank Gate we would be clearing today.
Recommended party size: two.
It was an ordinary D-rank Gate known for Lizardmen sightings.
“Sia, do you have any equipment?”
“Yeah! I have plenty in my subspace. Why? Did you not bring yours, Oppa?”
“I did. I was just asking in case you didn’t have any.”
Nothing much had changed for me compared to a year ago, so the equipment in my subspace should still be there. But it would not be the same for Sia.
After being reincarnated, the subspace she had used in her previous life, along with everything in it, should have disappeared.
That was why I assumed she would not have any equipment, but Sia was already prepared, as if it were only natural.
But then...
“...?”
The first piece of equipment Sia took out was a sword.
It was an extraordinary sword, even at a glance.
I could tell without even holding it.
Just how ridiculously overwhelming it was.
Still, I looked at her with some confusion.
It already made no sense for Sia, a dragon, to take out a weapon in a mere D-rank Gate.
More than that, though, shouldn’t a mage like Sia use a wand instead of a sword?
At least if she intended to pretend to be a D-rank mage.
Just as I was thinking that, Sia held the sword out to me.
“Here, Oppa. Use this.”
“...Huh?”
“It’s my gift to you. I thought it would suit you.”
Her unexpected gesture caught me off guard.
“Do you not like it? Should I give you something else?”
“No, no, it’s not that. If it’s from you, Sia, I’d be happy even with a toothpick. I’m just a little overwhelmed. Thanks. I’ll use it well.”
“There’s still more, Oppa.”
“Huh? There’s more...?”
“Yeah. Just wait a moment.”
As if the sword had only been the beginning, Sia began taking all kinds of equipment out of her subspace, including armor, a helmet, a cloak, and accessories.
Judging by the quality of the sword she had just given me, the other equipment could not possibly be ordinary either.
And when I put them on, that expectation proved right.
Every single item gave off an unusual presence.
“Thanks, Sia. I’ll use them well.”
“Wait a moment, Oppa. There’s still a lot left.”
Even after that, Sia kept pulling artifacts out of her subspace.
I had heard that dragons piled their lairs high with treasure, but this went far beyond anything I had imagined.
“Sia, does this sword... have a name?”
While she was doing that, I asked her about the sword.
The other equipment was amazing too, but when I held this sword, I had the strange feeling that it and I were connected by some invisible thread.
How should I put it? Although I had held it for the first time today, it somehow felt familiar, as though I had been holding it for a long time.
Sia looked a little surprised.
“That’s... a Dragon Bone Sword.”
A Dragon Bone Sword.
It was not simply a good weapon. It felt like something more than that.
Still, using these ridiculous items against mere Lizardmen...
That felt strange in its own way.
Anyway.
Once we had finished preparing, Sia and I stood at the Gate entrance, our hearts pounding.
I was nervous because it had been a while since my last Gate raid, but at the same time, memories of how we used to be made my heart swell.
Then, suddenly.
‘Is Sia... okay?’
I looked over Sia’s condition.
I had forgotten for a moment, but a Gate was a horrible place where Sia had once died.
It had been 2,500 years for her, but dragons were said to be beings who never forgot.
I had suffered from trauma over the past year. Even if she did not say anything, could Sia not have some trauma related to Gates as well?
““Are you okay?””
But the moment I asked whether Sia was okay, she asked me the exact same thing.
Having spoken the same words to each other at the same time, we soon smiled warmly.
“You were worried I might have trauma too, right, Oppa?”
I nodded.
Perhaps touched by that small gesture, Sia suddenly kissed my cheek.
“I’m really okay, so you don’t need to worry at all. More importantly... are you okay, Oppa? About what happened then...”
“Yeah. I’m okay too. I was worried, but I didn’t think I’d be this fine.”
Honestly, I had been a little nervous before entering the Gate.
But once I was inside, the shaking stopped strangely enough.
Far from feeling any trauma, I was actually looking forward to it.
“That’s a relief. Let’s finish quickly and go eat mala tteokbokki for dinner!”
Hearing her say that, it felt less like we had entered a Gate and more like we had gone for a walk around the neighborhood.
Well, Sia was beside me.
With the artifacts Sia had given me, I did not feel nervous at all. It practically felt like a date.
We slowly walked through the Gate, waiting for monsters to come at us.
Then, a little later.
Several Lizardmen appeared at our ten o’clock.
The Lizardmen watched us warily, making their distinctive cries.
“Oppa, over there.”
“I see them too!”
“I’ll watch from here. You can handle that many on your own, right?”
“Of course. I’ll be right back.”
Sia wished me luck, saying that although it would not happen, she would help if things looked dangerous.
Then again, I probably would not need Sia’s help.
The difference in rank was just too great.
Unlike me, who was relaxed, the Lizardmen seemed to sense danger. They shifted from their wary stances into combat stances.
Kieeek!
Once they came close enough, I felt the pleasant resonance coming from the sword and swung it at them without hesitation.
Slash!
Before it could react, one Lizardman’s neck was cleanly severed.
I had thought my combat instincts would have dulled after such a long break, but perhaps because of the rank reassessment this morning, I had no trouble swinging the sword.
No, maybe it was because of the equipment, but I felt even more skilled than before.
Not only did my movements with the sword feel better, but I could also see the Lizardmen’s movements much more clearly.
Their strides, the paths of their crude weapons, all of it.
Like a fish in water, I kept swinging my sword.
Before, I would not have been able to cut off their breath in a single strike, but now I held the absurd weapon Sia had given me.
The Lizardmen fell with each blow, unable to put up even the slightest resistance.
“Whew.”
I had expected things to be easy with such good equipment, but not this easy.
I turned toward Sia.
Killing a few D-rank monsters with such an incredible weapon was hardly something worth making a fuss about.
Yet Sia was staring at me with a shocked expression.
“Oppa, that was completely... amazing.”
“No, it was nothing.”
What would killing a few D-rank monsters mean to a dragon like Sia?
So I thought she was only trying to encourage me.
“It’s not just something I’m saying, Oppa. I mean it.”
From the tone of her voice, Sia was genuinely, sincerely impressed by what I had just done.
‘What? Does she really mean it?’
* * *
The sword Sia had given Minjun was not an ordinary sword. It was a Dragon Bone Sword, crafted from dragon bones.
The weapon itself was incredibly powerful, so of course she had expected Minjun to perform well.
But something else was what surprised Sia.
‘He drew out the sword’s power.’
He had not intended to, but Minjun had clearly awakened and used the power dwelling within the sword.
The power he had awakened was faint, but the fact that he had awakened it at all was immensely significant.
After all, no one who had drawn out the potential of a Dragon Bone Sword had ever been ordinary.
‘Dragon Bone Swords... assess their owner’s potential.’
Before Sia came here, to the modern world, Dragon Bone Swords were known as swords that found their masters among the swordsmen of her world.
There had been someone who went from an ordinary soldier to a Swordmaster with just one sword.
There had been another who had been the king of a weak nation, yet united the continent with a single blade.
There were many other great figures whose names everyone would recognize.
‘Could our Oppa become like them too?’
Imagining Minjun leaving his mark on a page of hunter history, Sia smiled softly.
But there was one thing she did not know.
In her world, the person who had once used the power within a Dragon Bone Sword better than anyone else...
Was someone whose name had once been forbidden even to mention in dragon society.
* * *
As they gathered the loot, Sia told Minjun about the sword’s secret.
She told him that he had drawn out, however faintly, the power dormant within it.
She also told him of the accomplishments of those who had drawn out that power in the past.
It was an astonishing story for Minjun.
“So the sword you gave me is not just an ordinary sword, but something much more special... and I drew out the power within it?”
“That’s right, Oppa.”
Even after hearing the story, Minjun still looked stunned.
“I had that kind of talent...?”
There was a natural question in Minjun’s mutter.
‘If I had that talent, why have I only reached this point?’
It had not been discovered during his rank assessment. And why had he been born with such a strange talent in a world without dragons in the first place?
Having talent was definitely a good thing, but Minjun still felt a little bewildered.
“Could our Oppa become a Ranker in less than a year at this rate?”
Sia said it jokingly.
But unlike her tone, she considered the possibility quite seriously.
From the start, as long as she fully supported Minjun, it had been entirely possible for him to become a Ranker.
That had actually been her plan.
But what if Minjun himself had this much potential?
Even without her help, he might be able to achieve something just as great.
Of course, it would never be easy.
“If you say so, Sia... then I have to try.”
“How can our Oppa be so dependable?”
He was dependable, but he was also so cute and lovable that Sia ruffled his hair.
“Sia, you’re messing up my hair.”
“This has its own kind of charm too.”
Looking embarrassed, Minjun covered his face with one hand and moved her hand away with the other.
But Sia only enjoyed his reaction more and smiled like a fond mother.
“Then let’s go!”
It was time to move and find more Lizardmen.
With the feeling that they were on a date, Sia and Minjun slowly made their way through the Gate.
After some time passed, the two spotted a group of Lizardmen moving somewhere.
Watching them, Minjun prepared an ambush.
‘If the sword has that kind of power... I should get used to it quickly while fighting these guys.’
He had not realized it when he first swung the sword.
But now that he knew he could use the sword’s potential, he could not swing it thoughtlessly.
‘Don’t think about anything else. Just try to draw out that potential.’
Of course, deciding to do so would not suddenly let him draw out more of the power within the sword.
He still did not know what sense he had used to draw out that power, or even exactly what that power was.
But...
‘This kind of thing is all about mental imagery.’
He had found a possibility, so he had to develop it somehow.
Minjun touched the sword’s hilt, then leaped toward the group the moment the timing was right.
Kieek!?
While they were flustered by the sudden ambush, Minjun quickly swung his sword at the foremost Lizardman.
His body felt light, and he could see the Lizardman’s movements very clearly.
But he could not feel the power Sia had mentioned.
‘I don’t get it.’
Again.
This time, Minjun’s sword accurately pierced a Lizardman’s chest.
‘What exactly was Sia talking about?’
He still could not understand what energy of the sword he had drawn out, or how he had done it.
Even as he swung the sword in various ways.
Even as the Lizardmen fell helplessly before it.
Still.
From Sia’s perspective, Minjun was clearly drawing out the potential contained within the sword.
In a slightly different way from the other Dragon Bone Sword users.
