◈ Spring Never Comes to Stolen Fields ◈

Chapter 19: Homeroom Teacher

──────

The appearance of the man who stopped Celia and Luna's fight was the most shocking thing I had seen since entering the academy.

Even from the brief glimpse I got, his power, speed, and precision were overwhelmingly beyond human.

I couldn't hide my shock.

My classmates reacted similarly. Anyone with a proper eye for these things would have realized that the real monster was that man.

The man let out a deep sigh, then spoke in a gentle voice.

"Fighting is forbidden in our class unless it's an official sparring match. Understood?"

Celia and Luna had been about to give it their all, but his sudden appearance seemed to kill their mood. They each turned away and returned to their places.

"I'm Luke, and I'll be the homeroom teacher for the Grade 1 class starting today. I look forward to working with you."

Our homeroom teacher wore nothing but black pants and a white shirt.

The only things that stood out were his messy black hair, as though he had just woken up, and a rather large silver cross earring.

Luke. I had never heard that name before.

That bothered me a lot. There was no way a human with that level of skill could go unknown.

If Celia really was evenly matched with Duke Aiern, then our homeroom teacher could easily beat Duke Aiern.

As countless questions swirled through my head, he lined us up in two rows and said he would take attendance.

"All right, I'll call you by your given names in this class. You didn't come here to play at being nobles, did you? Right?"

A few people looked offended, but our homeroom teacher didn't care.

"Number 1, Celia."

"Yes."

Celia looked at him with suspicion. She was probably thinking the same thing I was.

"Number 2, Luna."

"Yep."

Unlike Celia, Luna watched him with intrigued eyes.

In Demon society, strength was the ultimate measure of worth. It made sense for Luna to be interested in someone powerful.

"Number 3, Arin."

"Here~"

The little kid I met last time. If she had tried to stop Celia and Luna with magic today, she probably would have started arguing about whether the spell had a casting time or not.

I vaguely remembered hearing from the principal's scolding that she was the Tower Master's daughter. Talk about being born with a silver spoon.

Our homeroom teacher called each student by name and checked their face.

I looked over the others whenever their names were called. Some looked strong at a glance, while others made me wonder how they had gotten into Grade 1 in the first place.

"Number 12, Sirius."

"Yes."

Our homeroom teacher glanced at my face, then gave me a comment he hadn't given anyone else.

"You've got black hair like me, but you're last in the class. You're a disgrace to black-haired people."

I had hidden my ability during the assessment, but it still felt like he had wounded my pride.

And please don't start some weird stereotype that black-haired people have to be strong.

"We'll begin classes tomorrow. Does anyone have questions about me or what lies ahead?"

The students' expressions changed in an instant.

Of course they were curious. So was I. Just what the hell was this guy?

A male student named Leo asked the first question.

"Teacher, may I ask what you did before coming here to teach?"

That's it! That's what I wanted to know!

I was grateful to Leo for getting right to the heart of my question. I felt like we could become good friends.

Our homeroom teacher didn't give a proper answer, though.

"If all of you remain in Grade 1 until your final semester, I'll tell you then. Next."

So we were supposed to put up with our curiosity for two and a half years. It didn't look like he had any intention of telling us.

"What's your specialty, Teacher?"

Arin raised her hand and asked in a high-pitched voice.

"I'm decent at a little of everything, but magic is my specialty. Next."

Celia, who had her arms crossed, stared at him intently and asked an unexpected question.

"Teacher, how old are you?"

Our homeroom teacher had remained calm through every question so far, but this one seemed to catch him off guard. He choked as if something had gone down the wrong way.

"...Cough... No, Hero, why are you curious about something like that?"

"You said to ask if we had questions."

Celia tilted her head.

I agreed with her reaction. It wasn't a difficult question at all.

"I'm probably older than you think. Next."

Once again, he gave no specifics and moved on.

I wondered if it was really all right to hire someone this suspicious as an instructor.

Every other teacher I had encountered so far had seemed to be a warrior or mage from a renowned family.

When the silence continued, our homeroom teacher explained the direction his classes would take.

"Grade 1 classes are very different from ordinary classes. I hope you'll keep that in mind."

"Honestly, your individual abilities are exceptional. You would probably struggle to find opponents your own age."

Everyone nodded as though they agreed.

"But the opponents you'll face aren't the friends standing beside you. Never forget that. Don't forget what your ultimate goal is."

"What I'll teach you isn't some special magic or technique. In some areas, some of you may even be better than me."

"Our class will focus on learning how to fight together."

Everyone looked like they hated the idea.

Celia and Luna included, everyone here looked full of themselves. There was no way they would like it.

His next words, though, were an offer the others couldn't refuse, aside from the Hero.

"You'll each be placed in a group with the Hero at least once. Whether you build a personal relationship or see how well you work together in battle will depend on you."

They might not have liked it, but they had no choice but to admit it was an opportunity.

"If there are no further questions, we'll end here for today. Gather at Training Ground 1 by ten tomorrow morning. Dismissed."

Our homeroom teacher walked away without looking back.

I was all smiles because I had gained an extra hour of sleep compared to yesterday.

Luna and I finished class earlier than expected and returned to the Dormitory.

A nap. Today, I planned to take a nap, something that had been erased from my life for who knew how long.

Other than the week I spent unconscious after drinking Luna's blood, I hadn't slept during the day for more than three years.

Feeling good, I hummed to myself.

Luna looked curious and asked me a question.

"What's got you so happy?"

"Class ended early."

Drunk on the freedom of all this extra time, even my steps felt lighter.

"You're that happy about it? Honestly..."

"Yep. No matter what you say, I'm so happy. I'm ecstatic. It's thrilling."

"What are you going to do that makes you this happy?"

"Take a nap."

Even to me, my voice sounded incredibly solemn.

Luna asked again because I sounded so serious.

"What?"

"I'm taking a nap."

She looked dumbfounded for a moment, then grinned.

I knew exactly what it meant when Luna smiled like that.

Ah. Don't smile. Don't smile like that.

After glancing around and confirming no one was nearby, Luna slipped closer and linked arms with me.

"Then, Sirius, shall we spend some intimate time together for the first time in a while?"

Luna gave me an adorable smile, and she was incredibly seductive.

Still, today of all days, I wanted some time entirely to myself.

"Sorry. I can't play with you today."

Maybe I had been too firm.

I thought I should have phrased it more gently, but then Luna's quiet voice reached me.

"It's because of her..."

"What?"

"You're trying to keep your distance from me because of the Hero..."

Luna looked at me seriously, as if she had never smiled at all.

"That's really not it. You know nothing happened between Celia and me."

Our brief conversation on the terrace flashed through my mind, but it wasn't a crime if she didn't find out.

"...Why are you lying?"

"...Huh...?"

"I'll give you one chance. Tell me. Did you do anything with that Hero bitch or not?"

It had been a while since I felt my body stiffen like this.

Luna's Innate Magic. I felt the contract bound in blood tightening around my body.

"No, seriously. I didn't do anything."

I tried to sound like an innocent victim who had been wronged.

Luna watched my expression closely, then released her Innate Magic.

"I'll always be by your side, but watch yourself, Sirius."

Of course. Naturally.

"The day I catch you screwing around with the Hero, I won't hold back."

After saying something chilling, she pointed at the rings on our hands.

The moment those rings came off and a rampage broke out here, every student and teacher in the academy would focus their attacks on us.

It would be utter destruction.

Luna had to know that, yet hearing her go that far made me think this was also the effect of my Innate Magic.

It really was a double-edged sword of a spell.

"Of course. Would I ever disappoint our Luna?"

I hid my fear and forced a smile.

Satisfied with my response, Luna pulled me into an embrace.

"Then let's go take a nap."

She whispered into my ear.

Wait, were we sleeping together?

It looked like my reunion with a nap all to myself would have to wait.

Luna and I really did take a nap in my room.

Luna slept peacefully in my arms, and she looked adorable.

I had been looking forward to napping alone, but this was nice in its own way.

I woke before her and stayed still, simply watching her.

As I stroked her hair, someone knocked on my door.

"Sirius, are you in there?"

It was Celia's voice.

Even asleep, Luna frowned as though the noise bothered her.

Knock, knock, knock.

Ah, what do I do?

"Sirius?"

Knock, knock, knock.

If it seems like no one's here, just leave already... Please...

Then another voice called my name. The speaker’s eyes were half-open.

"Mmm... Sirius...?"

...I was an idiot for being so happy about free time.
