◈ Surviving Among the Anomalies ◈
Chapter 1: Prologue
──────
Creepypasta.
A peanut-shaped statue that remains motionless while watched, but snaps its target's neck and kills them the moment someone blinks or looks away.
A faceless figure, abnormally tall and gaunt, that kidnaps children.
A place behind the stage of this world, where once you fall in, you can never escape, and so on.
Stories that do not exist, yet evoke fear through their concepts and settings alone.
Horror stories created purely for interest and amusement.
That is Creepypasta.
[Guys, I made a game. Wanna give it a try?]
[Surviving Among the Anomalies? What's this? Don't dump random crap in the indie game gallery.]
Enjoying horror was an innate human trait, and since I was human too, I had once gotten into Creepypasta after stumbling across it by chance.
I was not a die-hard fan. Still, I had enough knowledge to at least know what Creepypasta was.
[This is more fun than I expected lol. But isn't this just copying SCP and the Backrooms lol]
[Why are these called Anomalies, though? Couldn't you have named them something like Objects or Entities?]
[Simple is best.]
["Simple is best," my ass. You just wrote "anomaly" in Korean.]
Some were powerful monsters that destroyed everything simply by existing.
Some were transcendent beings beyond human comprehension.
Some were laws etched into the world, like the physical phenomena humans blindly trusted.
Some were superhumans, some were spiritual phenomena, and some were beings from outer space.
Then there were things that shattered the human mind through the act of perceiving them alone.
Humans were powerless before such things, capable only of struggling to survive. That helplessness itself was horror and fear, and humans were creatures capable of finding excitement and pleasure in such situations. That was one reason people enjoyed Creepypasta.
[No updates?]
[I'm developing it alone, so it's taking a while. Coming up with settings and concepts for the Anomalies isn't easy either.]
[Make a forum board. Hold an Anomaly contest there. SCP and the Backrooms were made through brainstorming like that too.]
[Oh, awesome.]
Another reason was that simply playing around with settings was fun.
Still, it was only enjoyable because it was fiction.
[Doesn't this have an ending? Do you just keep surviving?]
[It's a little bland. At least add a Dead Ending. If each Anomaly has its own unique Dead Ending, it'll probably get more popular.]
[Oh, awesome.]
You can scream with joy on a roller coaster because it is safe. If you learned right after it set off that it was going to derail, there would be no more joyful screams.
[Adding Dead Endings made it popular.]
[I get dozens of emails every day from people asking me to include the Anomalies they made.]
[Grats, grats.]
[Wanna submit one too? Whatever you make, I'll definitely put it in.]
[Nope. Too much work.]
[Come on.]
[Hmm. Then just add one for me.]
Fear and terror become an avoidance instinct for survival rather than entertainment when safety is not guaranteed.
[Hey, what is this? Every time, it's city destruction, country destruction, humanity destruction, world destruction, Earth destruction. There's even destruction of the universe? Half the endings are destruction endings now.]
[People keep making only powerful Anomalies, so I can't help it.]
[Ha, balance it out a little. The game's getting hard because only strong ones keep showing up.]
Creepypasta, too, can remain entertainment only while it is fiction.
But who would ever worry that fiction might be real?
Neither had I.
"…?"
Not until I looked up at the sky.
"Why is the moon blue?"
