◈ Surviving as a Warrior in a TRPG World ◈
Chapter 3: Priest and Adventurer (2)
──────
The leader was much larger than an ordinary man, but the warrior called Lugos stood a full head taller than even him, giving off an imposing presence.
He appeared to have suffered a serious chest wound. Bandages were tightly wrapped diagonally from his shoulder to his abdomen.
The injury looked grave at a glance, and the middle of the bandages was stained red, perhaps from bleeding. Even Gerik, who knew nothing about medicine, flinched at the sight.
“My companion is in critical condition. We’ll pay as much as we can. Could you help us?”
“...What on earth happened to you?”
Unlike frontier settlements where deadly monsters roamed, the East Gray Plains where Gerik lived had been settled for quite some time. Security there was fairly good.
Only goblins and wild beasts appeared around here at most. It made no sense for such seasoned adventurers to suffer such serious injuries, so the priest frowned, sensing that something was amiss.
“Um... Well...”
Instead of answering, the adventuring party’s leader cautiously glanced at the village chief beside him. The experienced chief understood that look to mean he should leave and began bowing and scraping as though preparing to go.
“Hehe...”
Yet as the chief lingered, watching their reactions instead of leaving, the leader, who had initially frowned, seemed to remember something and pulled a shining object from his clothes.
Ting...!
“You’ve worked hard showing us the way.”
The leader flicked him a silver coin. The chief caught it as though deeply honored and thanked him again and again. Then he swiftly turned and left.
“Mm...”
On his way out, the chief looked at Gerik as if asking, Why are you here?
But it lasted only a moment. Not wanting to upset the adventurers who had given him a precious silver coin, he put on a servile smile and hurried out of the monastery.
“Come inside. Your companion’s condition looks grave, so we should tend to his wounds quickly.”
Osrik had plenty of questions, but treating the seriously wounded man came first. He pushed down his curiosity and quickly led them inside the monastery.
‘Will I get to see an actual spell?!’
Just over a month after being reincarnated in another world, Gerik might finally witness transcendent power such as a spell. Excitement began to rise in him.
He carefully followed, making himself as inconspicuous as possible so he would not upset the priest or the adventurers.
“We’ll need hot water and towels. Would you rest for a moment?”
“Priest, I’ll get them!”
“Hm? You’re still here...?”
Gerik, whom Osrik had briefly forgotten was there, suddenly stepped forward to offer help. Osrik looked a little taken aback.
Hearing their exchange, the adventuring party realized that the boy before them was not a monastery priest but an ordinary villager. They frowned.
“You... Never mind. Go get them ready.”
After spending nearly a month around Gerik, Osrik had learned just how curious he was. He realized Gerik’s behavior came from innocent interest in the adventurers.
Many young people Gerik’s age admired adventurers, so instead of scolding him, Osrik decided to accept his help as though he had no choice.
“Yes! I’ll be right back.”
“...Priest, who is that boy?”
“He usually helps me take care of chores around the monastery. Pay him no mind.”
“Ah... I see. He must be a follower of Num.”
From his conversation with Osrik, the leader naturally mistook Gerik for a follower of Num.
Osrik considered correcting him, but thought he might one day tell that bright child of Num’s grace and guide him into the faith. So he neither confirmed nor denied it, only smiled faintly.
“More importantly, how did you sustain such serious injuries? This isn’t such a dangerous place...”
While Gerik boiled water over the fire pit, the priest finally gave voice to the curiosity he had been holding back.
The leader silently sought agreement from his party. Once they nodded lightly, he finally spoke.
“...We were attacked by an unidentified group while carrying out a mission.”
The leader of the adventuring party, who introduced himself as Aron, began to briefly explain their journey.
“We’re a party that has spent a long time completing Adventurers’ Guild commissions in the Demonwild Forest. We’ve performed steadily enough that we became eligible for promotion to Silver Plate this time.”
“...You mean Silver Plate adventurers?”
Osrik had known the party was no ordinary group, but he was astonished to hear they were effectively Silver Plate adventurers.
No matter how skilled they were, Copper Plates were still considered more or less ordinary humans. From Silver Plate onward, they began to wield supernatural power, however faintly. Osrik immediately sensed how terrifying their attackers must have been.
“Not yet, technically...”
“If you’re eligible for promotion, you’re no different from Silver Plates. Unlike Copper Plate, where one must pass a promotion mission to receive the qualification, Silver Plate effectively has no test.”
Osrik was a priest with broad experience, having traveled all over the world for years in pursuit of ascetic practice.
He knew that becoming a Silver Plate adventurer required not only skill, but also a record built through successfully completing commissions over a long period. That was why he understood that being eligible for promotion was virtually the same as already being a Silver Plate adventurer.
“Ha ha...”
The adventurers relaxed a little, looking brighter as the obviously seasoned priest praised them.
In the meantime, Gerik returned carrying boiling water and clean cloth that had been boiled, then set them down before the priest.
“You worked hard... Hm?”
Gerik had not even been told to do so, yet he had sterilized cloth for the injured man in boiling water. Osrik’s eyes gleamed with surprise.
Seeing how the clever boy took care of two or three things on his own after being asked for one, Osrik abandoned his plan to send him away and made a request.
“Gerik. This old man will remove that patient’s bandages, so could you help me at my side?”
“Yes! Of course, Priest.”
Gerik had wanted to stay a little longer to observe the adventurers and watch the priest’s spell. At Osrik’s words, his face lit up.
“Carefully... Yes... Not too quickly.”
As the priest slowly cut away the blood-stiffened bandages with a knife, Gerik carefully began lifting them off as instructed.
“Urgh...!”
Even though they removed the bandages as slowly as possible, the scabs inevitably irritated the wound.
A painful groan escaped the seasoned warrior, who had clearly endured all kinds of hardship.
‘This is bad...’
Even Gerik, who knew nothing about medicine, could tell that the warrior’s condition was grave.
The middle of his chest had been torn open, and his exposed muscles were barely holding his insides in. The sight sent a chill through Gerik.
“Gerik, hold it firmly so the wound doesn’t open further.”
“Yes!”
He hated having to look at such a horrifying injury, but knowing he was about to witness a miracle from a fantasy world made the disgusting sight bearable.
“The great protection of Num is without end...”
Prayers to Num flowed continuously from Osrik’s lips. After he murmured for some time, a greenish, sacred light began to flow from his hands.
“Whoa...”
As the green light covered the wound, flesh began to grow from the bleeding area and fill the gap.
“Hoo...”
Perhaps because the wound was so serious, it did not fully heal even after he used the healing spell for quite some time.
Osrik let out a quiet sigh, then soaked a dry cloth in the hot water Gerik had prepared and began cleaning the wound.
“Ghk...!”
“Bear with it a little longer. Once I clean the wound, I’ll use a healing spell again.”
It looked agonizing even to watch, but the adventurer gritted his teeth and endured the pain.
“Gerik. Again.”
“Yes!”
At Osrik’s brief request, Gerik once more pressed hard against the warrior’s chest, keeping the split wound together as tightly as possible.
Osrik then recited a holy blessing again and cast a spell to heal the wound.
Crack! Crack!
Interestingly, as the wound closed, the scabs began to fall away. At the same time, the infected area gradually subsided, and the wound began to stabilize.
“Mm... I think this is all we should do today.”
The adventurer was not completely healed. Thin wounds and areas where the infection had not fully gone down still remained on his chest.
Even so, when the priest said he would not cast any more healing spells, the leader looked puzzled.
“Ah... Is it not possible to finish today?”
“Overusing healing spells in quick succession can cause side effects. If time allows, it’s better to space the treatment out.”
“Ah...”
“Also, I’m a Battle Priest, so I can’t cast healing spells many times. We’ve dealt with this badly wounded man’s immediate danger. To heal the others as well, it’s best to stop here for today.”
After answering, Osrik approached the leader and grabbed his right arm.
“Ghk...!”
The leader clenched his teeth against the pain when his arm was suddenly grabbed.
Seeing this, Gerik realized that the leader had deliberately hidden his own injury to keep the party from worrying.
“B-But please focus on Lugos first...”
“Your wound is not minor either. It looks like one healing spell will be enough now, but if more time passes, the wound on your arm will become just as serious as that patient’s.”
“...”
Osrik persuaded him with a solemn expression, and the companions who saw the severity of the hidden wound urged him as well. The leader obediently removed his armor and revealed the injury.
“Next.”
After healing their wounds one by one, the priest rested back in an old chair in a corner of the monastery with an exhausted expression, seemingly drained after casting so many spells in such a short time.
“Other than Lugos, none of you need healing spells anymore. You may have body aches or muscle pain, but those are only mild side effects from the healing spells. Endure them for a day or two, and they’ll go away.”
“Thank you, Priest.”
Thanks to Osrik, the adventurers had overcome their immediate danger. They repeatedly bowed their heads with sincere gratitude.
“This...”
When the thanks were over, the leader swiftly took a heavy pouch from his clothes and handed it to the priest.
Osrik accepted the pouch without much change in expression, rose to his feet, and placed it beneath the holy symbol representing Num.
“O Num, your humble servant offers this tribute.”
Hummm...!
‘What is that now...?!’
To Gerik’s astonishment, the pouch opened and revealed the silver coins within.
Light flowed from the exposed coins, and they gradually vanished as though evaporating. In the end, all but about three coins disappeared.
Witnessing the miraculous sight of a god collecting an offering, Gerik could feel that a god truly existed close at hand in this world.
“Hoo... Let’s finish what we were discussing. What exactly was this attack?”
“Ah, well...”
At the priest’s question, the leader began to briefly explain their journey.
They had built up a record by carrying out Adventurers’ Association missions near the demon-infested wilds for many years and had finally succeeded in being recognized as Silver Plate adventurers.
“As the priest said earlier, all that remains is to report to the branch in the major city of Norton and receive approval.”
Since it was a task with virtually no difficulty, the adventuring party said they had also accepted a mission from the Adventurers’ Guild to transport goods to Norton while traveling there for their Silver Plate promotion.
“It seemed those people were trying to steal those goods.”
With that, Aron carefully took several fist-sized boxes from his pack and showed them to the priest.
“What are those...?”
“We don’t know what’s inside either. Strict secrecy is the iron rule...”
“That would make sense.”
