Chapter 50: Goblin Cave (3)

──────

no_minions_4_me: What was that Dwarf's name again?

└ cowhead: Chase.

└ no_minions_4_me: Wasn't he the one bawling his eyes out and throwing a fucking fit last time??

└ cowhead: Yeah, that's right.

└ no_minions_4_me: The irony is real.

└ cowhead: That's what makes it so good.

└ cowhead: It's his own karma. Whatever reason he had for coming in, he has to deal with it LOL.

└ no_minions_4_me: I'm not trying to defend him, but I kind of feel bad for him.

└ no_minions_4_me: He has no memories, so he's going through that bullshit all over again... Sigh.

└ no_minions_4_me: Still, honestly, I think he deserves to die.

└ cowhead: The moment he set foot in here?

└ cowhead: I think that Dwarf's fate was already decided.

└ cowhead: A Wave is ultimately a fight to the death.

└ cowhead: It's Dungeon Masters and intruders staking their lives in a showdown.

└ cowhead: Dreamland feels like a place where that fight to the death keeps going even after you leave the dungeon.

└ orange★: LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

└ no_minions_4_me: Why are you suddenly laughing??

└ orange★: I just thought of how newbie is going to stir shit up.

└ no_minions_4_me: ????

└ orange★: That demon is 100% going to do it.

└ no_minions_4_me: No, what is newbie going to do???

└ orange★: Hmm... Should I say it or not...

└ orange★: Nah, just watch.

└ orange★: You'll find out soon enough anyway.

* * *

"You had your perfectly good teeth pulled out that brutally, and it doesn't hurt?"

"Yeah. I told you it doesn't hurt. Look at the roots. They came out fucking clean. There's no blood or wound either."

Gronak's speech was slurred, but not enough to make him difficult to understand.

Chase checked Gronak's teeth and stroked his shortened beard.

There were no wounds or bleeding. It was strange in many ways, but at least that was fortunate.

Then again, even if Gronak had been completely distracted by the Minion, it was odd that he hadn't screamed while having his healthy teeth pulled out.

'Is that the woman's ability?'

Chase sighed.

"What the hell was that crazy behavior about? She's obviously dangerous. No matter how pretty she is, you had no idea what might happen, so why the fuck did you say yes?"

"I told you just now. I don't know why I acted like that either... It was, you know, like I'd been bewitched by a beautiful ghost."

The Minion they had encountered earlier could be summarized as follows.

1. She was mysteriously beautiful to the point that it was impossible to look away. Staring at her face seemed to enchant people.

2. She first subdued her target, then took all of their belongings.

3. She sold the possessions she stole to intruders and took payment for them.

4. She gave away a perfume bottle as a gift. (Its purpose was unclear.)

Putting it all together, she wasn't a Merchant. She was a very beautiful highway robber.

"We need to be careful not to get bewitched."

Judging by Gronak's condition, if he had continued trading with her, he would have needed dentures at best. At worst, he might have been disabled for the rest of his life.

"The next time she appears, don't look at her face. You could die, understand?"

"Yeah, yeah. But that woman has our things. That means the bastard has our Escape Scroll too, so what do we do? She pulled eight of my front teeth for one bottle of water and two pieces of bread, fuck..."

It was certainly a major problem.

Food and water aside, they had lost their other belongings too.

Even if they were lucky enough to find an Elevator that led to the next area, they would face the worst possible situation if they couldn't recover the Escape Scroll.

There were still two more areas this merciless ahead.

Whether they had the Escape Scroll or not would clearly have an enormous effect on their state of mind.

We had entered this dungeon solely to investigate it, after all.

'Trading is an inferior option for now. Let's leave it as a last resort.'

It would be better to take their time and think of a solution.

They didn't have the luxury of relaxing, but rushing wouldn't help either.

There had to be a way to get it back.

"Chase."

"Yeah?"

"Why have you looked like you swallowed shit all this time? Are you that worried about my teeth?"

There was one thing weighing on Chase's mind.

Suppose I had come to this cave during the previous Dungeon Raid.

If I couldn't find a suitable method besides trading, what price had I paid the Merchant to get the Escape Scroll back?

'It couldn't have been my beard.'

Chase stroked his short beard again.

"Hey, look at this. I can chew food just fine even without my front teeth."

"You crazy bastard. Save your food."

I should get some rest today.

Facing Anomalies was mentally exhausting.

Day 2 of Dungeon Exploration

Chase opened his eyes.

The sun was rising when he looked up at the sky.

Mornings came even to Area 3 of Dreamland.

Not figuratively. Literally.

The Merchant had confiscated their sleeping bags and everything else.

The two slept directly on the dirt floor.

Thankfully, it wasn't very cold.

The temperature was pleasant, and there was no wind, so they didn't have to worry about catching a cold.

Anyway.

"Grrrhh..."

Unlike Gronak, who was sprawled out and snoring, Chase stretched diligently.

Starting today, they would investigate the cave properly.

It stretched from the first floor to the eightieth, so they had to keep moving.

Just as Chase was about to wake Gronak, seven Goblins approached from the distant entrance.

Chase's expression stiffened.

Those bastards could leave the cave too?

He had thought outside was a safe zone, but apparently not.

"Get up. Goblins are coming."

"H-huh!?"

At the mention of Goblins, the sleepy Gronak sprang to his feet.

"H-hey, hey, hey... Doesn't that mean we're fucked? What do we do now?"

"Calm down. They're still some distance away. Spray some of that perfume we got from the Merchant yesterday."

Pssht. Pssht.

The two Dwarves hurriedly sprayed the reeking perfume over themselves.

"Fuck, this really stinks. Will this be enough?"

"I don't know... Just stay quiet for now."

The Goblins came within a certain distance.

They flared their nostrils, but unlike yesterday, they didn't scream.

They simply ignored the two Dwarves and passed by.

'Where are they going?'

Chase and Gronak exchanged glances.

Then they carefully followed the Goblins.

There was a tree there.

Something like fruit hung from its branches.

On closer inspection, it wasn't fruit, but rotten meat.

Trees that bore rotten meat didn't exist.

After what they had experienced yesterday, though, the two could only accept it and move on.

The Goblins began gathering the rotten meat.

Then they called out to the two Dwarves hiding behind the bushes and watching them.

"■■! ■■! ■■ ■■!"

Chase flinched, but kept his composure.

There was no hostility like yesterday.

'Are they telling us to work...?'

The Goblins were pointing at the tree.

Chase swallowed a groan.

He couldn't help but hesitate.

One mistake would lead straight to death.

What did this phenomenon mean?

Should they do as the Goblins ordered?

Or should they ignore them and enter the cave?

Unlike Chase, who couldn't easily make a decision, Gronak seemed to have already made up his mind and strode toward the Goblins.

He helped them gather meat from the tree.

Gronak gave Chase an OK sign, as if telling him to come over.

Chase was reluctant, but with no other choice, he followed Gronak's lead this time.

And so, the Dwarves worked alongside the Goblins until the sun went down.

.

.

.

.

.

It didn't take long to prove that Gronak's choice had been right.

The sun set.

Once the Dwarves had finished working, a Goblin wearing a red cap approached them.

"■■■■."

The Goblin handed each of them one Braille-Embossed Coin.

"..."

Chase blinked.

It was ridiculous enough that they were laboring like miners in a dungeon, but now they were even being paid in coins.

The Goblins entered the cave before the sun had completely disappeared.

Could they not come outside at all during the night?

For now, Chase committed the new information to memory.

"I think we need to act like Goblins in this place. Maybe they'll attack us if they realize we're not Goblins. Something like that."

Gronak suddenly spoke up.

"What makes you think that?"

"I don't have any evidence. It's just a hunch. What does your smart brain think?"

Chase stroked his beard.

Gronak's guess was certainly reasonable.

The Goblins had stopped treating us as enemies the moment we covered ourselves in the stench.

"I agree with you. So far, we've learned that Goblins use language and identify others by smell. Once we're inside the cave, we should communicate with hand signals as much as possible."

Gronak nodded.

"Let's go inside before the sun disappears. We need to investigate the cave to reach the next area."

"All right."

With that, they entered the cave.

.

.

.

.

.

Nothing as awful as yesterday happened.

Even when the two Dwarves entered the cave, no Goblins screamed.

At least, not while the stench still clung to their bodies.

It seemed they didn't have to worry about being surrounded by countless Goblins.

But.

'We can't just act like Goblins.'

Large Goblins roamed around the first-floor lobby.

They repeatedly beat Goblins without coins with clubs.

Some only suffered broken bones.

Others bled from their heads and died on the spot.

'I need to act like a diligent Goblin.'

There was a famous saying that when you come to the North Kingdom, follow its laws.

The Goblin Cave was no different.

If you came to the Goblins' lair, you had to follow the Goblins' laws.

The outline was slowly becoming clear.

Chase was beginning to understand what they needed to do.

'Let's go.'

Chase signaled to Gronak with his eyes.

Gronak nodded.

.

.

.

Chase divided the first floor in half.

He and Gronak each took one section and investigated the cave.

During the search, Chase found a note lying on the ground.

Its edges were ragged, as though it had been torn from a book.

'What is this?'

Familiar handwriting caught his eye.

Chase immediately recognized who had written the note.

'That's my handwriting?'

Why was it lying on the floor?

After a brief moment of confusion, he picked it up and began to read.

.

.

.

Without question, setting foot in Dreamland was the stupidest thing I had ever done.

■■■ and ■■... Those were only tiny fragments of it.

There was something far more horrifying.

I thought I could raid this dungeon.

I thought we could return with plenty of information, then begin the raid.

Only now did I realize how idiotic those thoughts were.

I want to go back.

I want to go back.

I want to go back.

I don't want to return outside.

I want to go back to before the sixth raid began.

I don't know.

Even if I leave, can I return to who I used to be?

I have no confidence that I can face the sins I committed.

At least, it was fortunate that I could lose my memories.

It was better to live as a coward than die bravely.

That much was certain.

If.

Just if.

I were given the chance to forget everything that happened in this dungeon and live a new life.

I would never waste that life.

God, please, just once, give me a chance to set everything right...

.

.

.

"..."

Chase burned the note.

Then he started walking again.

That was forged information.

There had to be a trap capable of forging even handwriting.

Even if I had truly written it, I hadn't seen anything.

So it didn't matter.

Let's not dwell on it.

The moment our resolve broke, all that awaited us was death.

Chase moved forward.
