◈ The Forgotten Curse Knight ◈

Vol. 2 Ch. 20: The Fragment of Memory Is There

──────

By the time Theo woke the day after they defeated the Termea, reinforcements from the Holy Knight Order had arrived. It seemed Oswald had requested support from the Reyel Holy District the day before.

"That being the case, you three can head back now. I'll escort you as far as Cinder House."

Holy Knight Nicola explained the situation to the three Gray Knights as they ate breakfast bread in a room at the meeting hall.

This Termea had been classified as Fourth Grade, an extremely dangerous threat, so a considerable number of knights had been sent to deal with the aftermath. Captain Oswald Gregory, who had swiftly defeated it and kept the damage to a minimum, had apparently received high praise from the Papal See.

Hugo tore off a piece of bread, sticking out his lower lip in displeasure.

"So they're stealing the credit for what we did, right? Hah, what a cushy job."

"Hugo, Captain Gregory was the one in command. It's only right that he be recognized."

"There it is! Acting like such a goody-two-shoes!"

While Theo and Hugo bickered, Carla silently ate her bread.

Cheerful Nicola waited for their quarrel to die down before speaking again.

"Captain Gregory is a careful person. Because of that, other squads always end up taking the best parts."

According to Nicola, Oswald Gregory himself was an exceptional martial artist. When it came to swordsmanship alone, he was supposedly among the top five in the Holy Knight Order.

However, because he wanted everything fully prepared before facing a situation, he was slow to act and ended up yielding the credit to others. As a result, the higher-ups tended to underestimate him.

"So, I know I'm the one saying this, but thank you. For helping him."

Hugo still looked displeased at Nicola's thanks, while Carla continued eating her bread expressionlessly.

But Theo felt warmth slowly spread through his chest.

He had fulfilled his duty as a knight. He was proud of that.

After breakfast, Theo packed his things and headed to the neighboring house with Hugo and Carla. They were going to pick up Lenny, whom they had left with Mylene.

Mylene was already up and seemed well, playing with Lenny.

According to the woman of the house, the adults had been on edge amid the grim atmosphere the night before. But thanks to Lenny being there, Mylene had not been too frightened.

Mylene's older brother, Simon, had regained consciousness as well, and they said he would probably be able to return home soon.

When Lenny, the fluffy fluffball, noticed Theo, Lenny rolled across the floor, then sprang high into the air and rammed straight into Theo's face. The force was far too strong.

Theo caught Lenny in both hands after the creature dropped from his face, then bent down to meet Mylene at eye level.

"Thank you for playing with Lenny, Mylene."

"No, thank you very much. Um... Big brother..."

Ah, she must have forgotten his name after all, Theo thought. It was nothing unusual. He was used to it.

"I'm Theo. We're going home today, so I came to say goodbye."

"Theo, big brother. Um..."

"Yes?"

Mylene fidgeted. As Theo wondered what was wrong, she suddenly began stomping her feet on the spot.

"Popera-pe, puu!"

Before Theo's startled eyes, Mylene squished her cheeks with both hands.

Theo was stunned. That was his pathetic little routine, the one Hugo's lies had talked him into.

(Why...)

Mylene was supposed to have forgotten everything about Theo, his face, his name, the words he had said to her, everything connected to him.

As Theo stood speechless, Mylene looked at him while fidgeting.

"Because sometimes, you looked lonely."

"...................."

"Popera-pe, puu is fun, and it cheers you up!"

Theo quickly covered his eyes.

He had thought nothing he did reached anyone's heart. He had thought no one would remember him. He had thought he could leave nothing behind in anyone else's heart.

But there was a small hope here.

"Thank you... That really cheered me up."

As Theo gave a tearful smile, Hugo smack! roughly slapped him on the back.

"I came up with it, you know," he added unnecessarily.

"Hugo did nothing," Carla cut in.

Lenny carefreely let out a "Meuu."

He had truly been here.

That realization made Theo's heart pound.
