◈ The Saviour Embarks on a Nameless Journey
Chapter 14: Cute
I bought a durable robe and added a few other small items to the list. My plan was to clearly deny the rumors in a voice loud enough for everyone around to hear, so I started wandering around while waiting for someone to approach and talk to me. However, they just kept whispering and muttering, keeping their distance.
I thought it would be odd to deny something without being asked of it, but in the end, no one approached me directly about it. My patience soon reached its limits.
“Hey, I’m not Suirun’s illegitimate child! Stop with the weird suspicions!”
As I turned around, I addressed the group whispering behind me in a voice that was not exactly quiet. They scattered like baby spiders, fleeing in all directions.
As I left the area lined with stalls, it started raining little by little.
“And with that, I’m not going to leave the inn for the rest of the day.”
I declared to Marius.
“Still as impatient as ever. Well, I don’t think I'll be leaving the inn either with rain like this.”
The light raindrops turned into a heavy downpour just as we rushed into the inn for cover.
However, the rain of this season rarely lasts long, so it’s unlikely we’ll be delayed. Not that it would matter much if we were, as this isn’t a journey that requires haste.
“Nevertheless, someone rushed in after hearing rumors at the inn’s reception while I was registering. That was pretty quick if I must say.”
“Give me a break…”
I was at my wits’ end.
The inn is also an information house. Amounts usually depend on the contents of the information brought in, but the money is given to the one who brought it in first.
“Wrong information spreads quickly y’know, probably.”
Marius said while smiling.
“Why are you never sought after, you bastard?”
“I’m usually made to wear flashy clothes at events, so that impression of me is stronger. I don’t think many people would recognize me with this face and this outfit.”
Marius’ face naturally reflects the passage of time, rather than that of the statue. His clothes are simple and designed for long journeys with minimal decoration. Damn him…!
Although a small affair happened, the rain did stop as expected. We set off on our horses the next day. Hmm, horses truly are good.
“A horse mixed with a monster is quite a complicated thing.”
“Stop complaining, good things are good things!”
It was unthinkable of back when the Demon King was around, but after fifty years, monsters are being used in various ways.
“They won’t suddenly go mad or gain more power now that the Demon King is gone.”
Back when the Demon King was still around, monster blood could alter the form of any creature mixed with it, including horses, which caused them to start attacking people.
“Horses eat without being picky and are sturdy. Their temperament is a bit wild, but if you’re heading to places where monsters might appear, that quality turns out to be quite reassuring.”
Marius narrowed his eyes as he gazed down the road ahead.
This area leads into gently rising hills within the forest. It’s far from both the town we left and the one we’re heading to—a densely overgrown place, even in daylight. Beyond that, the road narrows into a valley, making it difficult for travelers on carriages. Slow-footed travellers are easy targets to be robbed around here.
“P-Please help me, I fell and my leg…!”
Someone was lying on the road. It was a scrawny man wearing a pitiful expression.
“—Even on cobble paving, I must commend it for walking without any unsteadiness.”
Though dissatisfied, Marius reluctantly approved of the monster-infused horse.
“Why did they even bother laying down cobblestones in the first place?”
“Who knows? Perhaps to ensure the road doesn’t disappear?”
Cobblestones usually hurt horses’ hooves, and are quite slippery.
“I’m injured—hey!?”
They passed right by the man.
“They even went to the trouble of laying stones all the way up this pass.”
“Honestly, I think it’s impressive to navigate this slope without trouble. With yesterday’s rain, it’s slippery even on foot.”
Marius and I said to each other, completely ignoring the man,
Monster-infused horses don’t wear horseshoes. Their hooves are naturally so hard that there’s no need for iron protection.
“Wait! To the town… Together…!”
The man behind us shouted.
“Not having Shato with us sure lets us avoid all sorts of trouble.”
Marius said while laughing.
“That’s right.”
If Shato was here, he’d have his doubts and stop by to listen to the man's story, or something like that.
The man who was shouting was likely part of a band of mountain bandits. His boots were dirty, and mud had splashed onto his pants. No matter which town he came from, it was a cobblestone road. It would make sense if the mud had soaked into his clothes, but even if he had fallen, they wouldn’t end up like that.
He must have veered off the main road and walked through the mountains for a while. His hideout is probably somewhere in the mountains.
“It would’ve been more believable if he claimed he was attacked by bandits and that he ran away, rather than simply falling.”
Marius shook his head slightly in disbelief.
“Don’t expect any acting skills from bandits now. —If they’re going to attack, it’ll be in the narrow area up ahead most likely. What are we doing?”
“Since it's a hassle, should we just run through it?”
That man’s role was to prevent that, most likely. He’d blend in with the travellers, and when the main group attacks, he’d stab the travellers from behind.
“It should be a piece of cake with this buddy.”
I stroked the horse’s neck.
“You sure have a strong love for animals.”
“It’s cute after all.”
Watching it gives me a sense of reassurance—even if it were hypothetically something that might attack us.
“Pya—”
“I’m not talking about you.”
“You’re adorable too, Lord Shinju.”
