◈ The Saviour Embarks on a Nameless Journey
Chapter 50: Pya’s Effect
──────
The missing portion of the crystal settled into place, the cracks along the seams vanished, and a transparent double-pointed crystal was completed. At the same time, Alina and the others disappeared.
It seems they were expelled.
“Pya?”
“I shall give you a boiled egg later, so behave yourself.”
I stood before the transparent crystal, a fragment of the goddess’s power, representing the goddess herself. I only looked at it for a moment before drawing SuiEn once more and cutting it cleanly in two.
The crystal split apart, then shattered on its own, becoming fine light that wrapped around SuiEn. As its name suggested, SuiEn was a sword as transparent as water, with pale blue flames seeming to rise along its clear blade.
Even after taking in the goddess’s power, it did not stand out the way Shato’s Brave sword did.
What I asked of the goddess was Shato’s rescue. When the time of our promise came, the goddess told me to wait.
“When the Demon King’s presence thins from the world and the goddess’s power fills it, your hope shall be granted.”
“The time shall be when your hair is dyed pure white.”
“The Brave is in the Demon King’s land. I cannot grant your wish directly, but I shall grant you the power to reach that land.”
That was why I was retracing the journey to subjugate the Demon King, gathering the power the goddess had left behind so I could reach the Demon King’s land. Well, she had also given me a troublesome request as if it were incidental.
“Oops. If I dawdle, Marius will have something to say.”
“Pya.”
Now that the crystal was gone, this place would blend with the surroundings and eventually disappear. Better that than a strange imbalance of power. More peaceful that way.
I returned SuiEn to my body and went outside.
“You’re safe.”
Seeing me, Tain sounded relieved.
“You lot were thrown out?”
“When I thought the crystal had been restored, I found myself here.”
Alina looked at me with a slightly puzzled face.
Why only Grandfather? It was written plainly on her face. The question seemed to contain a little worry over my having been left behind alone. Ah, the loveliness of a granddaughter whose feelings show so honestly.
“I was not thrown out in particular. Perhaps because Pya was on my back?”
I smiled at Alina and tilted my head.
“As expected of Shinju-sama.”
Alina said this and smiled without a shadow on her face, so I lifted her up with one arm.
“Pya.”
Pya began squirming as if uncomfortable.
“I shall treat Pya to a boiled egg for dinner.”
Pya stopped moving at once. Cheap hush money, that.
“Sacred beasts truly are beings close to the goddess...”
Io.
Io, whether you realized it or not, you had thought of Pya as something like an amusing white eggplant, and then lumped him together with sacred beasts, did you not? Ordinary sacred beasts are more divine, so rest easy.
If the first thing one saw after hearing “sacred beast” was Pya, misunderstandings were bound to be born.
“Yes. They are beings deserving of reverence.”
Marius nodded with a smile.
Sacred beasts are, yes.
“Still, to think a monster would possess a core in the middle of purification. It seems we should check the other locations as well.”
Marius said this as if it were a great bother.
“Do not send word to the kingdom. We would likely run into them everywhere on the road, and in the end, they would foist it onto us anyway.”
When I said this with a grimace, Marius agreed.
“That would be nothing but vexing. In that case, it may be better to defeat them along the way.”
“Hey, are you serious?”
Tain let out a startled voice.
“The closer we get to the place where the Demon King was, the stronger the cores left behind will be, but we have defeated them once before.”
“And they are not core-bearers themselves, only things clinging to the remnants of cores.”
Marius and I exchanged words.
“Seriously...?”
Tain repeated the same thing once more.
“I understood quite well after facing that monster that it was unusually strong, but I could not read you at all, Aster-sama. Of course, seeing the result with my own eyes, I know that your strength is exceptional, but...”
Io trailed off.
Io was a mage, so was it not fine if she could not measure me, a swordsman? Of course, it would be better if she could.
“Grandfather’s presence was the same as always!”
Alina said this proudly.
We returned to town and looked around here and there. This time, it was not for the purpose of searching for a monster’s presence, but purely to enjoy ourselves.
“The souvenirs here are plates?”
Io peered at the plates lined up in front of a shop.
“The gate plates are famous.”
Plates with decorations and coloring that were clearly not meant for use were set out on stands and hung on the walls.
“The most popular one is apparently a replica of the gate plate. The design differs by era, and some people collect them.”
A worldly mercenary was well suited to guiding us around town.
After sightseeing for a while, we returned to the inn for dinner. It was not exactly a celebration for defeating the monster, but the adults had alcohol, the children had juice with fruit decorating the rims of their glasses, and Pya had a boiled egg.
Once salad, soup, and bread for everyone had been arranged on the table, a large platter came out on a cart.
On the platter lay a fierce-faced trout-like fish caught in this area, surrounded by grilled river shrimp and roasted vegetables.
An inn worker used a large spoon and fork to skillfully serve portions from the platter. The crisp, browned skin broke open, and the soft white flesh of the fish rose with warm steam.
The shrimp and vegetables were arranged with just the right touch and placed before us. When I brought it to my mouth, the flesh was as fluffy and soft as it looked, faintly sweet beneath the saltiness, pleasing the tongue.
“Fish dishes here are quite good as well.”
Marius smiled without a trace of sarcasm.
“Is it because of the herbs on top? It does not smell fishy at all. Rather, it is fragrant. Strange, when they are only placed on top.”
“It is very delicious.”
Io and Alina. Io seemed prone to analyzing food as well.
“I wanna bite into it as is...”
“Aye. I would like to take a great bite myself.”
I agreed with Tain. It was delicious, but too refined for me to feel as if I had eaten.
Well, since Pya had finished his boiled egg in no time and was eating my share, I truly did not have enough.
Today, I had pushed the reason I remained inside the goddess’s barrier onto Pya, so I thought I would let him eat as he pleased. But he is eating too much! You have gone past eggplant and turned into a round zucchini!
