◈ The Saviour Embarks on a Nameless Journey
Chapter 6: The Grandchild Alina, and the Witch’s Disciple, Io.
Marius and I walked through the forest’s main road to the next town. We were in the talks of borrowing the horses, but ended up just walking our way in a carefree manner. The main roads were neglected due to the period of the when the demon king appeared, but thanks to the former king Chatillon, they’re mostly back to how they were back then.
But then, I only use it to travel between the royal capital and my own territory, so I don’t know about other routes. The highway inside my territory was repaired independently by my own initiative, but it must have been a burden to bear for other territories. The quality of the roads might not be in the best condition everywhere after all.
Even so, it's far better than the time when we had to traverse through what seemed like gouged-out remains of a road, terrified of monsters. Well, although the area close to the capital had an intensifying atmosphere, the stone paving of the road itself didn’t change much.
However, I can see that it’s brighter than that time. The air feels lighter, and the world feels wider.
“Back then, I was only trying to get closer to the demon king, even if by a little. —The light shining through these young leaves is quite a beautiful thing.”
Marius said, walking nonchalantly by my side.
During the journey to defeat the demon king, I thought he was a man I wouldn’t get well with, but now, it feels like our thoughts are strangely overlapping.
“Grandfather!”
I was startled as I turned around to the voice who called me. I saw my granddaughter, who shouldn’t have been here, running towards me.
“Alina!
Alina stepped right in front of me, and her white skirt expanded in a circle. She most likely used magic to adjust her flying altitude———I caught Alina in my arms.
I lightly patted Alina in the back, and saw the person behind her.
“Alina, no matter how happy you were, it isn’t ladylike to do this.
A girl 3 years older than Alina with a well-featured face.
“I'm sorry, sister.”
Alina looked her way with a smiling face and apologized.
“Fufu. Alina is cute.”
I touched the tip of Alina’s nose while holding her in my arms.
Although their forms differ, the two girls wear dresses with the same intricate patterns, details, and colors. It’s good that they get along well, but why does there seem to be a slightly unsettling atmosphere?
“It has been a while, Io. You too, Miss Alina.
Marius spoke, showing no signs of surprise.
“It sure has, Uncle, and Mr. Aster.”
Io gracefully kneeled in the middle of the road filled with trees.
The pair look quite young from my eyes, but it seems that 3 years make a good difference, as Io looks and acts way more mature now.
The current duke’s youngest child, and a disciple of the Witch Elaine. The long-living Elaine has had a lot of disciples in her time, but the one who was considered her successor is one person, and that is Io.
From what I remember, Io had a huge amount of mana when he was still in the womb, to the point that it had started eating away on his mother’s body, and Marius ended up calling Elaine to help. Afterwards, Elaine started regularly extracting mana out of Io. Mana that’s out of control harms the user’s body after all.
Io started learning mana control from Elaine, which ended up in her following the path of magic, as one would expect. Although I never expected Alina to follow her on the path as well.
The royal family repeated marriages chosen by blood in order to protect the hero’s lineage. Likewise, the Marquisate, as a spare to the royal family and to produce supporters of heroes, has also incorporated individuals with strong magical abilities into their family.
All of this was done in order to go against the resurrected demon king. In fact, I hear that it has been a tradition for the hero to come from the royal family, with at least one companion from the duke's family.
“Was that teleport magic?”
“Yes. Lady Elaine saw a good opportunity and instructed me to use teleportation magic about once a week to cover more distance, using you as a landmark. Since I don’t know much about the world yet.”
Io earnestly answered Marius’ question with his eyes lowered down.
Teleportation magic won’t go smoothly if you don’t have any kind of mark, or so Elaine told me once. A mark can be created with a spell, blood of a relative, or mana.
Witch Elaine was extraordinary, she could teleport to any place she had visited before by picturing the scenery in her mind. Io might be aiming to reach that level too.
“What about Alina?”
“Alina is also studying, grandfather! ‘Go and take a look at the world’, said grandfather Chatillon.”
Upon asking Alina, she said she was studying too.
The only people who can stop Io from acting rashly are Elaine and Alina currently, so that might be why Alina was made to accompany her.
Alina is beloved as a princess, but to this country, the Io who can already use teleportation magic should be more important.
In addition, when using teleportation magic with another person, if it’s not someone you know well enough it becomes quite hard, or so I heard. Elaine was just too extraordinary, so I'm not quite sure about that.
“When I recall Lord Chatillon’s voice, it didn’t sound like he said ‘Go and take a look at the world with grandfather’, but more like ‘Go and take a look at grandfather’ deliberately, or was it just my imagination?”
Marius, that’s quite the disturbing thing to say!
