◈ The Weakest Knight Became a Swordmaster, But Only in Dungeons ◈

Chapter 14: Blue Flame Magical Beast (2)

──────

A Dungeon with complex terrain, filled with leafless dead trees and stone pillars beneath a deep-blue sky.

Blue flames blazed everywhere, and the dead trees wore them here and there in place of leaves.

By the time I entered the Dungeon, Elise's group had already left.

Remembering this Dungeon's features from the game, I took a path away from the trail Elise's group had left behind and headed for my target.

As I walked, blue-flame-covered slimes and orcs attacked me.

Slash!

I cut them down with ease and continued onward.

‘Blue-Flame Forest.’

That was this Dungeon's name in the game.

My target would join Demon Hiccup and pressure Elise's group.

I estimated its route and tracked it down.

Whoosh!

Scorching heat washed over me.

Beyond the flaming trees, a giant as large as an ancient tree shook the earth with every step.

‘Found it.’

The horn jutting from its forehead spewed vicious flames.

A magical beast wrapped in blue fire.

Helldrug, the Blue-Flame Ogre.

It was the cause of Elise's rampage and the target I had been after.

Every monster in this Dungeon wore blue-flame armor, and blue flames blazed throughout the Dungeon, all because of this thing.

When I stepped in front of Helldrug, it stopped and looked down at me.

It was as tall as an apartment building. I had to crane my head absurdly far back just to see its face.

“It’s really damn huge... How much mana did they feed it?”

Pure admiration escaped me.

This was the handiwork of Demon Hiccup, the Tamer.

Could anyone even use a magical beast after fattening it up this obscenely? What if it got high blood pressure or diabetes?

Thinking such pointless thoughts, I placed a hand on my sword hilt.

[Grrrrr... Gwoooar!]

Perhaps recognizing me as an enemy, Helldrug raised a black club the size of a small building.

Whoooosh!

Blue flames surged violently around its club.

Shhk.

I drew my sword and smiled.

“This should be satisfying to cut.”

* * *

Several dozen minutes earlier.

Elise Lorendia fell into the Dungeon. Lara Twislope entered after her.

As the two discussed the situation, Henry Twislope followed them into the Dungeon and joined them.

Then, ding!

A translucent notification window appeared at the edge of Elise's vision.

[“Scenario Note” has been updated.]

[Would you like to view it?]

[Oh, Elise. You, your friend, and her younger brother are all about to be burned to death by a magical beast's power! What a truly regrettable thing. But don’t be sad. You’ve always changed tragedies, haven’t you? Let’s work hard this time too!]

Elise's eyes widened briefly, and her lips parted slightly.

It was a warning from the Scenario Note. The light vanished from Elise's eyes.

Only for a moment. Elise quietly took a deep breath and recovered her usual expression. She could not make Lara and Henry anxious.

After a brief discussion, the three decided to defeat the boss together and obtain the Exit Gate Key.

As they moved forward, orcs and slimes wrapped in blue flames targeted Elise's group.

“Bloom, scatter.”

A red flower bloomed from Elise's sword, Crossguard.

The flower scattered red petal mana and stirred up a fierce wind. Every petal cut through the monsters.

Fwoosh!

“!”

But the moment the petal wind touched the blue flames, its mana density rapidly decreased and its power dropped sharply.

Elise narrowed her eyes.

“Those flames seem to devour mana.”

“What? Something like that exists...?”

“The petal wind weakened the moment it touched the flames.”

“There really is no end to strange things.”

The female cadet wearing a beret, with pale-blue hair tied into low twin-tails, raised her right hand and extended her index and middle fingers.

Whoooosh!

Lara's midnight-blue eyes glowed faintly.

“Elise, conserve your mana. I think my magic is better suited to this place than large-scale magic that consumes a lot of mana.”

“Big Sister, don’t worry! I’ll take care of them all! Hide behind your little brother!”

“Ugh! Move, Henry! Your very presence grates on my nerves!”

“Ghk!”

Lara stopped concentrating on her magic long enough to punch Henry.

Then she took her stance again and focused on her magic.

“Fish Sword. Take flight.”

At her Word Command, pale-blue mana bloomed and transformed into several sharp swords in midair.

All the mana swords floated like fish, arranging themselves in a circle around Lara and aiming in every direction.

Swish.

Lara pointed ahead with her right hand, her index and middle fingers extended.

“Deploy.”

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh!

Slash!

The blue mana swords darted through the air, precisely avoiding the blue flames as they cut down the monsters.

“Let’s go, Elise.”

“You’re so dependable, Lara. Should I hug you as a reward?”

“Eek, don’t tease me at a time like this...!”

“That’s my big sister! Ah, if only I could show the whole world how amazing you are...!”

“Be quiet before I shut that loose mouth of yours, Henry.”

The three continued clearing the Dungeon with ease.

Before long, they stopped together.

Atop a hill shaped almost like a cliff stood a strange creature dressed neatly and adorned with multicolored jewels.

Purple skin, horns, three pairs of eyes, and a small mouth.

“Elise, it’s a demonkin.”

“Yeah. That much is obvious.”

The demonkin continuously tilted its head from side to side with a creak, creak, like a broken machine.

“What a free-spirited face you have. Are you the one who dragged me here?”

Elise stepped forward and asked. Her mouth was smiling, but her eyes were not. Cold killing intent filled her turquoise eyes.

The position, angle, and timing of the Gate's appearance had been far too perfect. Elise judged that someone had deliberately caused her to fall into the Dungeon.

She also knew that some demonkin possessed the authority to create Gates. In other words, there was a high chance that the suspicious demonkin before her was the culprit.

[Fairy... power... Give it... to me...]

Wriggle, wriggle.

Thud, thud.

Groups of slimes and orcs clad in blue-flame armor appeared all around them. There were quite a lot of them.

They had turned purple after being corrupted by demonic energy, and their bodies had grown larger.

The mana they gave off was no joke, but they did not feel truly threatening.

[To my... beloved... child... Give the fairy’s... power...]

Slash!

Shhk!

Fwoosh!

Meanwhile, Lara used her mana swords, Fish Sword, to cut down the monsters.

Some were split in two or badly wounded, but others skillfully used blue flames to disrupt Fish Sword's mana.

Still, she simply made more Fish Swords.

Elise narrowed her eyes. According to the Scenario Note, some “magical beast” would lead her group to their deaths. Yet there was no creature here capable of doing that.

Soon, the demonkin cried out with a creak, creak, like broken gears grinding together, a smile on its face.

[Fairy... power! My... carefully raised... Helldrug... Give the fairy’s... power to that child...!]

“Helldrug?”

Whoooooosh!!

With an explosive roar, a huge mass of flames burst fiercely into the sky above the forest. At the same time, terrifying mana descended upon the area.

Lara and Henry's eyes widened, while Elise became alert.

[Hm...?]

On the other hand, Demon Hiccup, the Tamer, sensed something strange.

Those flames belonged to the magical beast Hiccup treasured most, Helldrug, the Blue-Flame Ogre.

Helldrug was supposed to join Hiccup and fight Elise's group.

So why was it releasing flames at full power somewhere else?

[Gwoooar!]

Helldrug's roar echoed through the Dungeon. The moment Hiccup heard it, Hiccup realized something had gone wrong.

Fear was mixed into that roar.

Meanwhile, at Helldrug's location.

Whoosh!

Ron Hazely effortlessly evaded the blue flames Helldrug fired at him.

Soon, Helldrug brought its huge blue-flame-covered club down on Ron.

Booooom!!

A violent tearing sound spread through the air, and scorching heat engulfed the area.

A torrent of flames poured down. There was nowhere to dodge.

However, without changing expression, Ron wrapped dark silver mana around his sword like flames.

Crackle!

He swung his sword over his head.

Slash!

Boom!!

A silver slash shot along the path of his sword, collided with the blue flames, and caused a violent mana explosion.

Helldrug's eyes widened.

The blue flames had devoured the silver mana slash, but not completely. The mana explosion forced the flames back for an instant.

“As expected, it devours mana... Ah.”

Crack, crumble...

Cracks spread across Ron's sword. Then it shattered like glass, its fragments falling to the ground.

‘Right. A sword like this has reached its limit.’

Ron sheathed the sword with only its hilt remaining. Then he extended his arm and reached for a sensation engraved in his instincts.

Whoosh!

Silver-gray mana poured from his hand, gathering in an instant and taking the form of a sword.

Ron gripped the hilt and spoke the sword's name in a mana-filled voice.

“Kalzak.”

Whooom!

A heavy wave burst from the sword. Ron's hood and clothes fluttered once.

The dead trees in the area trembled all at once, and the blue flames seeping across the ground leaned to one side as if struck by a fierce wind.

Ron drew the sword from its scabbard.

Riiing.

A clear sword cry rang out, and the silver blade exuded a murderous aura.

The wolf sword left behind by Sylvia, the Wandering Knight. The famed blade, Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak.

Elise's group did not know this sword's power. Its owner, the wandering knight Sylvia, had been a Swordmaster in an age long past.

Then all Ron had to do was let loose.

[Requirements]

- [Fourth Tier]

- [Sword Expert realm]

[Requirements have been met.]

[The abilities of “Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak” have been unlocked.]

“Haa.”

Silver-gray wolf breath flowed from Ron's lips as he synchronized with Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak.

Whooo!

Silver-gray wind mana swirled from Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak's blade.

Iron Claw Wind. It was Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak's ability.

[Gwoooar!!]

Whoooosh!

Driven only by its desire to survive, Helldrug let out a monstrous scream and released flames at maximum output.

A spreading firestorm. Trees were torn out by their roots, and rocks melted away.

As if struggling desperately, Helldrug once again slammed its blue-flame-covered club down at Ron.

Boom!!

The ground shattered, and an explosion erupted.

Yet Helldrug did not feel that it had defeated Ron in the slightest.

Its instincts told it that someone that powerful could not possibly be defeated so easily.

Fwoosh!

At that moment, Ron's figure appeared through the rushing flames.

Ron had kicked off the ground and launched himself forward.

The blue flames pouring from Helldrug tried to swallow Ron, protected by Iron Claw Wind.

But Iron Claw Wind kept rising and consuming the flames faster than the blue flames could devour it.

Helldrug met Ron's ghostly blue eyes.

It was going to die.

Ravenous Wolf Sword Kalzak, carrying a sharp wind, reflected the color of the blue flames as it cut through a single instant.

A silver-gray slash shot forward.

Shhk!

Helldrug's head flew off.

A massive mana slash cut through the air above the Blue-Flame Forest. Helldrug's head floated helplessly in the air as its flames died out.

Demon Hiccup stared at the sight, unable to close their mouth.

[M-My... masterpiece...! How...?!]

Helldrug was Demon Hiccup's proudest work.

How much mana had been poured into raising it this far!

And yet that monster had lost its life in an instant to an unknown powerhouse.

[Could it be...?]

Was that the one who had defeated Hiccup's fellow demonkin, Orankel of the Red Eyes? Hiccup did not know. Their thoughts became a mess.

No matter what, things had gone terribly wrong. Fear was now filling Demon Hiccup's face.

[Helldru...!]

Ruuustle!

Whoooooosh!

[...!!]

A powerful gale carrying bundles of mana flower petals swirled violently.

Demon Hiccup turned toward Elise's group with frightened eyes.

Stab!

[Ghk!]

At that moment, a sharp blade wreathed in red petals pierced through Demon Hiccup's mouth.

Elise was reflected in Demon Hiccup's eyes.

Her eyes were seductively narrowed, and she wore a smile full of killing intent.

Her turquoise eyes held a look desperate to take Demon Hiccup's life at once.

“Hi, I’m here!”

[H-How...?!]

How had Elise already reached Hiccup? She should have been fighting the blue-flame-armored monsters.

As blood bubbled from their mouth, Demon Hiccup quickly looked around and understood.

With Helldrug dead, the force of the blue-flame armor wrapped around the monsters had weakened.

Only Lara and Henry were holding off the monsters while Elise charged straight toward Demon Hiccup.

Demon Hiccup's eyes shook as though an earthquake had struck.

“I’ll kill you as painfully as possible, okay?”

[S-Save...]

Whoooooosh!

Slash, slash, slash!

[Aaaagh!!]

The petal wind surged, shredding Demon Hiccup's body to pieces.
