Chapter 758: Knight of Fatal Charm
──────
"I was already going to. Hm?"
Rem ground his teeth and turned.
Things were closing in from every direction, drooling as they eyed the village.
In a way, it was efficient.
There was no longer any need to seek out Demon Creatures and Magic Beasts one by one. Even roaming Demon Creatures, which had been impossible to find for some time, had appeared.
Kaaah!
Far away, a Harpy boasting eagle feathers and a broad, powerful chest beat its wings as it hovered in the air.
It was a roaming Demon Creature known as a minion of Dmyuler.
It traveled with a flock of ten, and every creature in that flock was said to fire invisible blades.
The leader was a Harpy, so naturally the rest of the flock were Harpies too.
There were eleven Demon Creatures capable of firing condensed, invisible wind blades throughout the night.
Rumble.
Before long, the ground began to tremble faintly. It felt like an earthquake, but it was not.
It was the sound of many heavy creatures charging, a vibration and sound one could recognize through experience on the battlefield.
When Enkrid looked into the distance, he saw a herd of rhinoceros Magic Beasts, their horns jutting from their snouts.
Magic Beasts that had awakened special talents were leaving the Cursed Ground and charging over for a special meal.
Through the dust cloud and vibrations, they did not look like ordinary Magic Beasts.
They would probably fight among themselves on the way here. Fighting over delicious prey was instinctive.
Enkrid had expected a moment like this. He had expected it, so he smiled.
"It's a party."
The Infiltrator and Demon Lord beside him widened their eyes at those words.
What kind of party?
A party where he would offer us all up as Sacrifices and watch?
Such a question could naturally arise.
They had seen the black-haired man kill a Minotaur, but this was a different situation.
The demon god's protection was gone. The fence that had protected them no longer existed.
Death was now inevitable.
Those who had struggled desperately to survive would breathe in Despair and breathe out frustration.
"Aaaaah."
One of the villagers let out a scream-like cry. Every villager who heard it was about to do the same.
Ruagarne approached and grabbed the villager by the throat.
"Ghk."
As the villager choked, Ruagarne puffed out her cheeks and shouted. A frog's cry was always loud.
"Atten-tion!"
The savage shout made everyone look at her. Even some of the Madman Knights glanced back.
The effect was immediate. The mouths of those watching closed.
With everyone's attention captured, Ruagarne opened her mouth.
"Repeat after me."
Ruagarne was a Frog, but she also called herself a performer. She had, after all, once worked with a theater troupe.
She knew the chant they needed now.
"Knight."
"...Huh?"
"Of Fatal Charm."
Just then, a wind blade fell from the sky.
Shhhhhick.
It could be heard, but not seen. That was why the sound itself became terrifying.
Rem casually swung his axe and swept it away. At the same time, something shattered.
Clang!
It sounded like a glass marble being smashed apart with brute force.
"So you want to play up there?"
Rem spoke with one corner of his mouth raised.
Throwing things from afar was their specialty, was it?
There was no need to draw the weapon called a Sling or stone-thrower on the continent, but known as a muritmaë in the west.
Rem's left hand flickered. That was how it appeared to everyone.
Those, led by Enkrid, who could see with Dynamic Visual Acuity saw something different.
His left hand drew the axe at his waist and threw it upward. The movement was twice as fast as when he had thrown it at Jaxon earlier.
The flying axe was faster than a hawk snatching its prey.
Boom!
With a roar, the axe broke through the sound barrier and embedded itself in the Harpy leader's head.
The head burst, and the body was forced upward through the air. It was hard to judge the distance, so it almost looked as though something had grabbed the leader by the throat and dragged it skyward.
Then black rain fell from the sky.
Rem took a few steps back and avoided the rain sprayed by the Demon Creature.
A Harpy as large as a bear crashed down. Its body twitched a few times before going still.
"Perfect for loosening up."
Rem said so as he watched it.
Enkrid broke down every movement Rem had made.
His combat sense, nearly a supersense, allowed him to understand what Rem had done.
'He gathered Sorcery power and amplified his physical strength in an instant.'
Just before throwing the axe, he moved to the position where he could draw the most optimal line.
It was only a few steps, but from there he must have drawn an imaginary line toward the Harpy leader.
'Then he detonated the Sorcery and threw the axe.'
Something similar to point-burst through Will had been mixed into it.
Finally, by adjusting the Sorcery power with extreme sensitivity and precision, Rem eliminated the recoil caused by point-burst.
'He uses only exactly as much as he needs.'
It was the same as the Will Lynox had displayed in Zaun, used without even the slightest margin of error. Rem did it naturally.
He fully deserved to be called a monstrous bastard.
As Enkrid grew, those insane genius bastards kept pace with him.
Right now, he felt as though he could win if they fought.
But who knew what would happen after a few more months?
That was likely the difference between a genius and an ordinary talent, and between a genius and a dullard.
'Even with inexhaustible Will, my advantage over him is only this much.'
If anyone asked whether that made him resentful, not at all.
It was fun. It was incredibly exciting and thrilling. Exhilaration filled his entire body.
He had experienced it often, but every time felt new.
"This is fun. Really fun."
The feeling overflowed, becoming a mutter.
To the surrounding villagers, he simply looked insane. Demon Creatures and Magic Beasts were rushing in, and he was saying it was fun.
Had the demon god manifested through that man's body?
Even if not, the thought that he was as dangerous as a demon god was carved into everyone's minds.
But what had Ruagarne said earlier?
A few villagers watching joined their voices.
"Knight."
"Of Fatal Charm."
They were not loud at first. Then their voices gradually grew.
Before long, every villager shouted with enthusiasm.
"Knight!"
"Of Fatal Charm!"
The cry of hundreds of voices erupting together held that much force. Like how a hundred people shouting in unison could be more persuasive than a single orator.
Enkrid turned to one side, thinking it was a nasty prank by that Frog, but Ruagarne could think of no more suitable name.
Fatal Charm.
It was the nickname that suited him best.
Look at him. Was he not even now radiating charm to lure the Balrok here?
"You really won't let us rest."
Sinar stepped forward as well.
"Fell, Ropord, stop fooling around."
At Enkrid's words as he ran, the two moved as well.
Romen had more or less grasped the situation now. Demon Creatures and Magic Beasts were charging in from every direction, but this was not a crisis.
Why?
Because everyone here was a monster.
Ragna ambled toward one side. As he drew his sword while walking, his greatsword shone through the darkness of night.
The sword, like a sun that rejected moonlight, stood tall amid the darkness.
Romen, who had been receiving an earful from Ropord, joined them.
Rumble.
The rhinoceros Magic Beasts charging toward them were the most urgent threat, and Audin and Teresa stepped forward to meet them.
"Let's push them aside!"
Audin shouted as he caught the horn of a charging rhinoceros Magic Beast with both hands and threw it aside.
Huh? Was that even possible?
It did not seem like something even Aoara could do if she returned from the dead.
And Audin had seemed to specialize in divine power, yet he did not even manifest it.
It was a duet of strength and skill.
The ground beneath Audin, the bear beastfolk, was gouged into a semicircle. His hands, limbs, and entire body became an unbreakable pillar of iron as he used his strength to shove the rhinoceros Magic Beast aside.
Boom!
A thunderous sound erupted, like lightning striking a boulder. It made their eardrums tingle.
The rhinoceros Magic Beast fell along with several other Magic Beasts. The half-blood Giant standing beside Audin performed a similar feat.
She used a shield instead.
She received the charge with the shield and pushed it aside. Her feet also traced a wide semicircle.
It was footwork born from redirecting force.
No matter how poor Romen's eye for things might be, he was still a junior knight. He knew how exceptional the technique those two had used was.
'Monsters!'
The cry naturally rose from within him.
Then the most terrifying monster among them stepped forward.
The darkness of night made his cloak appear black. Romen knew it was dark green in daylight.
Flap!
As Enkrid rushed forward, his cloak fluttered in the wind. The cloak, now stretched into a long shape, looked almost like a scarf.
It trailed out behind him in a long line. Enkrid stood at the end of that black streak, alien to the color of night.
"Assimilation!"
He uttered a word Romen could not understand and swung his sword.
A Ghoul with the Assimilation ability to blend into its surroundings was split vertically in front of him.
'When?'
It was a Demon Creature capable of hiding itself. Yet it had been sliced apart.
As black blood and entrails sprayed across the ground, the darkness seemed to greedily devour them.
"Knight!"
"Of Fatal Charm!"
Behind him, everyone shouted under the Frog's direction. The cry seemed to summon madness.
Romen took it all in. As he did, a desire to contribute to this rose inside him like wildfire.
It was a fierce blaze, like fire set upon dry grass.
"Uooooo! Here comes Romen of Aoara!"
Swept up in the atmosphere, Romen thrust his greatsword straight ahead.
Crack!
The greatsword caught a large Troll's head.
"Uoooh!"
With a shout, he pulled the sword upward with all his strength.
The Troll's head split apart. No matter how great its regeneration, it would die if its head was split open.
Look at me. I am Romen of Aoara!
His actions seemed to say as much.
A shadow slipped up beside Romen, and a calm voice poured a little water on his blaze.
"No. You're tensing your body too much. Use your joints more loosely. Apply force when you need to, and release it when you should."
"If telling him were enough to fix it, he'd have fixed it long ago. Leave him alone. If he dies after running wild like that, that is his own fate."
That was another shadow. The first was Ropord, the second Fell.
Ropord continued as he ran.
"I'm telling him not to move like that."
"That's why I'm saying it's useless."
"You may be like that because you shoved a human-faced dog's dick into your ear, but this man isn't."
"Hey, didn't you say that kind of insult makes a person look cheap?"
Ropord, who mocked people but avoided excessive profanity, had spoken like Fell without realizing it and felt a momentary sense of self-loathing.
Had he begun to resemble Fell after spending so much time with him?
The thought made him feel even worse.
Therefore, it was time to show who was superior.
"Whoever kills more..."
"Sounds good."
Fell agreed before Ropord could finish speaking.
The two scattered to the left and right. More dangerous creatures than the Troll Romen had killed earlier were everywhere. It was a fine environment for competition.
Romen saw them too.
Rustle.
Several chunks of stone leaped from the ground, then a fountain of dirt and rock erupted upward.
'A Worm!'
A huge earthworm Demon Creature, large enough to wrap around and kill a bear in an instant, burst from the ground.
"Mine!"
The man named Fell killed it.
He hurled himself into the air, curled his body, and swung his sword. It was a feat Romen could not even attempt.
The Worm tried to thrash despite its split head, but Fell carved it into pieces.
The casual sword strokes he made were equal to strokes swung with utmost dedication.
'Swordsmanship practiced through repetition until it comes out unconsciously.'
The principle of it came to him afresh.
Five Ghouls came rushing in, drooling beside the fallen Worm, but Ropord stopped them.
He calmly cut their throats one by one.
The entire process looked so natural and obvious. But when examined closely, it was not.
'Like prey caught in a spiderweb.'
That was the impression it left.
He restricted the Ghouls' movements, then followed with bold sword strokes when necessary.
After that, Romen could no longer pay attention to anyone else's fight. He had to move busily as well.
There were far too many creatures charging in.
Starting with Harpies, then Ghouls, human-faced dogs, Ogres, Trolls, armored skeletons, plague maidens, demons that sprayed poison, and more.
It was nothing special.
That was what he thought. What was so significant about fighting through the nights for merely two days?
The villagers who had shouted for the Knight of Fatal Charm had gone inside their homes early and hidden.
Ruagarne saw no reason to leave them outside and expose them to danger.
After that, Ruagarne joined the battle as well. From the center of the village, she issued orders to fill the gaps in their defenses.
Ruagarne-style tactical swordsmanship, the foundation of Enkrid's orthodox swordsmanship, was also an excellent technique for commanding a unit.
And so it went for two days.
Romen looked at the corpses of the Demon Creatures and Magic Beasts.
Not metaphorically.
The bodies were piled as high as a mountain.
