Chapter 65: Magical Power
──────
Even a Warrior-class player could use magic skills.
However, most quests that granted magic skills could only be undertaken by those with magic-related classes.
Skill books found in treasure chests also had their own usage requirements, so it was extremely difficult for a Warrior-class player to obtain magic skills.
But once you obtained one, you could use it. It wasn't like the system specifically prevented it.
You could discover a special hidden element, or clear a boss and learn a skill as a reward.
If you took a route like that, even a Warrior could make use of magic skills. I already had a few myself.
[Light Gathering Lv.1]
I got Light Gathering as a reward for defeating the Crystal Spider. Its effect wasn't anything special, but it was probably classified as magic.
And while I hadn't paid much attention to it for a while, [Lightning Charge], which I'd gotten on Floor 3, was probably part of the magic category too.
Besides, I already knew skills didn't have to come only from quests or skill books.
The many passive skills I'd gained proved it. Techniques learned through experience became skills.
If that was the case, then maybe I could use Shadow Magic if I learned from Eleanor, even as a Warrior.
Maybe I could even change into a special class that used Shadow Magic.
Of course, I was already completely committed to the Warrior class, so it would be hard to change classes even if I got the chance, unless it was an exceptional advanced class.
Anyway, with all that running through my mind, I went to find Eleanor.
Eleanor's standing among the Dark Elves was strange, but she was still a princess.
I didn't think I could just show up and meet her right away.
"What a surprise. You came to see me first? Should I take that to mean you're ready to accept my proposal from last time?"
"No."
"Hehe, there's no need to be shy. I already know you're secretly bashful. Relax and leave it to me."
Eleanor said she happened to be free, then immediately started spouting bullshit at me.
For the record, her "proposal from last time" meant her usual talk about sleeping together and all that.
It really made me realize how important looks were.
If the person saying that had been an ugly middle-aged woman instead of a curvy, gorgeous Dark Elf, I'd have drawn my sword and swung it a long time ago.
"Rizmel said there wasn't anything more she could teach me. She told me to find you if I wanted to learn something."
"Rizmel said that? How long has it even been since you started learning swordsmanship, and she's saying that already?"
Eleanor's eyes widened.
I'd mastered something that supposedly took at least half a year in a single day. Of course she was surprised.
-Creak.
Eleanor pushed back her chair and stood up. Then she slowly walked over and cupped my face in both hands.
"Just a moment."
She closed her eyes and stood still for several minutes. Just as I started wondering what she was doing, Eleanor opened her eyes.
"Goodness, you've changed so much in such a short time. Even for a human, this is far too fast."
It looked like she'd used some method to scan me. That was probably magic too.
"You're always full of surprises, no matter how many times I see you. I really like that. It makes me want to kiss you right now."
This bitch was at it again. Get your face away from mine.
* * *
I didn't know what Eleanor had learned from that scan or whatever it was, but she said she'd teach me something soon.
Naturally, Eleanor was busy in her own way, so we couldn't start right away.
We ended the conversation by agreeing to meet again when I returned to my lodging after swordsmanship training.
After the sun had set, Eleanor came to my room as always, wearing a translucent negligee.
I'd expected an extension of swordsmanship training, or maybe a lesson in magic. Why was she dressed like that again?
It was better eye candy than the best screenshots on the Open Community, but still.
She didn't look dressed to teach anyone anything.
She wasn't going to teach me techniques for the bed, was she?
"Ah, this is simply what I wear when I'm comfortable. Really, don't be so tense."
She said that, but who wouldn't be tense with a Dark Elf in a negligee standing right in front of them?
"Now, you've passed all of Rizmel's tests, correct? Then you must have learned how to expand your senses as well."
"That's right."
"You learned it in such a short time. It seems you've been doing similar training for quite some time already?"
Of course I hadn't. Still, she was flattering me.
"Then surely you know there is a realm beyond that as well."
I didn't. I'd only vaguely guessed as much from watching Rizmel move.
When I honestly said I didn't know, Eleanor widened her eyes in surprise again and began explaining.
Compared to the swordsmanship theory Rizmel taught, her explanation was incredibly complicated and unhelpful.
To put it bluntly, I couldn't understand even half of it.
"So you're saying there's a technique, or a state, where you use mana to sense your surroundings?"
Eleanor nodded at my heavily simplified summary.
Was I right?
Then it sounded like the [Mana Detection] skill that occasionally came up on the Open Community.
I'd heard it was a skill Mage-class players could obtain. It consumed mana to perceive nearby objects.
It could detect Labyrinth traps ahead of time or sense monsters lying in ambush, so it used to be a very important skill.
Now that strategies had been perfected, it was all a thing of the past. Still, first- and second-generation Challengers supposedly always made sure to have a Mage who had learned Mana Detection in their party.
It would probably be quite useful to me too, since I was clearing the Tower under the same conditions as the first-generation Challengers.
"Hm, you're quick to understand. The ability to sense and control mana is very important for a Warrior too."
Then Eleanor casually dropped something I never could have expected.
"After all, it is the very first step toward learning Mana Enhancement."
That female High Elf knight had used it. One of the Three Sacred Skills for Warrior classes.
Mana Enhancement.
Mana Detection was its prerequisite skill?
* * *
[Ground Shrink], a top-tier movement skill that instantly solved the chronic mobility problem of melee Warrior classes.
[Aura Mastery], a top-tier mastery skill that provided a wide range of attack skills capable of surpassing the limits of melee Warrior classes.
[Mana Enhancement], a top-tier buff skill that gave melee Warriors superior defense and increased stats above all else.
There was a simple reason those three skills were called the Three Sacred Skills.
Even learning one of them was enough for people to say that a B-rank Hunter position was practically guaranteed.
And in proportion to their performance, they were rare skills that were extremely difficult to acquire.
The sources for their skill books were very limited, and the related quests were mostly Hidden Quests with unknown conditions.
Naturally acquiring them through leveling up was something only rare classes of Unique grade or higher could do.
And Mana Detection was the prerequisite skill for Mana Enhancement?
"What? Seriously?"
I immediately asked again. Eleanor calmly nodded.
"Isn't that obvious? You can't possibly awaken Mana Enhancement if you can't control or even sense mana."
Hearing it put that way, it sounded completely obvious. Maybe other Challengers had guessed it too.
No, maybe the reason other Challengers couldn't learn Mana Enhancement was because they were looking for a related quest or skill book.
It seemed there were hardly any Challengers left who learned skills without relying on system rewards or skill books like I did.
"Yeah. It was obvious."
I nodded as it clicked. Choosing the Dark Elf faction had really been the right call.
Those fucking High Elf bitches, notorious for being total assholes, might have given great quest rewards, but they never would have helped me train.
Just learning that Mana Detection and Mana Enhancement were both skills obtainable through training was a huge gain.
"All right, let's get started. What do I do first?"
"First, give my cheek a kiss..."
"Quit talking bullshit and teach me how to use mana."
I quickly cut off Eleanor's nonsense and pressed her so hard I was practically ready to grab her by the collar.
Thankfully, Eleanor didn't say anything more ridiculous. Instead, she said we should begin and taught me a simple training method along with some tips.
The method and advice Eleanor gave me, though, were completely different from what I'd imagined.
The training method was just meditation.
More importantly, the problem came before any tips or methods. The prerequisite itself was the issue.
"No, fuck, I'm asking how I'm supposed to feel mana in the first place."
"Well, you meditate..."
"You said to meditate while feeling mana, but I can't feel mana!"
It looked like reaching this new realm would take quite a while.
