◈ Escaping the Mystery Hotel ◈
Episode 1: First Day at the Hotel, Meeting the Group
──────
Day 1
The moment I woke up, I was dumbfounded.
I was in the middle of a trip where I’d spent quite a bit of money, so I’d booked a decent hotel, and the room had been reasonably nice too, right?
In other words, it had been the kind of room where a man could comfortably watch a movie on the wall-mounted TV and fall asleep in a neat, relaxing atmosphere.
So where the hell was this room?
The room I woke up in was absurdly huge and luxurious, like something out of a movie, and it definitely wasn’t meant for one person.
The walls were covered with antique paintings.
The bed was made with such expensive-looking bedding that I almost felt bad for ruining it by moving around.
Was this what a European tycoon’s mansion looked like?
I turned on my phone to check the time, only to be startled again.
It showed that there was no signal.
Growing more confused by the second, I washed up, changed clothes, and stepped out of the bedroom. That was when I saw the display in the living room flashing brightly.
/Congratulations on the beginning of your adventure!
You have gained the Blessing of Wisdom.
You can learn things your other companions cannot know and understand things they cannot understand.
As you progress through your adventure, new possibilities will arise for the Blessing of Wisdom.
The blessing has been activated.
Today’s surprise event: There Are No Bad Animals in the World./
What the hell was this?
I felt like I was losing my mind.
As I grabbed the back of my neck and looked up at the ceiling, one edge of my vision wavered.
[User: Han Ga-in (Wisdom)
Date: Day 1
Current Location: Level 1, Room 105 (Rest Room)
Sage’s Advice: 3]
Was this some kind of game Status Window?
Only then did I accept that something completely impossible had happened to me.
* * *
When I headed into the living room, I found an enormous dining table, like something I’d only seen in movies. On top of it was a button labeled “Meal.”
Would food come out if I pressed it?
While I was considering it, a sharp scream rang out.
I sprinted toward the door, desperate to get out of this absurdly massive “room,” and threw it open.
The second I stepped outside and reached the front desk area, my jaw dropped.
A giant monkey?
Something was off.
It was a monkey, but it walked on two legs and held a melee weapon in its hand.
The inside of its mouth was filled with something closer to saw blades than teeth.
Rather than a monkey, wasn’t it just a monster?
Four? Maybe five people were being threatened.
Near the front desk on the left, a pair of women, one Western and one Asian, screamed helplessly.
Near a bonsai tree on the right, someone was sprawled on the floor, completely out of it.
There was a clear reason no one had been killed yet, despite the desperate atmosphere.
“Terminator?”
The stupid word slipped out before I could stop it.
A man with such a massive build that I wondered if he was a superhero was fighting with a wooden stick that looked like a chair leg.
He was even bigger than the monster monkeys, and every time he swung the club, the creatures were knocked away as if even they were losing to him in raw strength.
I stood there in a daze, watching him fight, when one of the monkeys noticed me and started approaching.
I don’t know!
I really didn’t understand what was happening at all.
I desperately wished that an angel, a demon, anything at all would tell me what to do. Then words suddenly appeared in the air.
[Move to Room 105 immediately.]
Room 105, my room number!
The instant I confirmed it, the number beside Sage’s Advice changed from 3 to 2.
Thankfully, it wasn’t far.
As I ran frantically toward Room 105, I heard unknown shrieks and loud running footsteps behind me.
I fought down the pointless urge to look back and kept running.
The moment I finally opened the door to Room 105, the sounds disappeared.
Only then did I turn around and look back dazedly.
The monster that had clearly been chasing me stood across the way, huffing and staring at me. It didn’t come any closer, though. Instead, it turned around and headed back to the front desk.
Was there something about this room?
It seemed the monsters couldn’t approach it.
After returning inside and breathing heavily for about ten seconds, I finally remembered the people who had been in danger at the front desk.
The Terminator-like man seemed to be fighting well, but he couldn’t keep fighting forever!
I didn’t know what was going on, but I had to save them.
Clenching my teeth, I grabbed an incredibly expensive-looking silver candlestick, just in case.
It should work as something like a weapon if I swung it.
With things this bad, no one was going to demand compensation because a candlestick got damaged.
I was terrified, but if things went wrong, I could just turn around and run back to Room 105.
When I ran toward the front desk, the situation had gotten worse.
The man who had been fighting like a warrior was bleeding heavily, as if he’d been injured somewhere. The two women huddled behind the front desk were desperately swinging whatever broken pieces they had managed to find.
The woman near the bonsai tree, whom I’d worried might already be dead because she looked unconscious, was thankfully still unharmed.
I also saw two other people running around nearby.
There was at least one bit of good news. One of the monsters had apparently been taken down by the Terminator-like man and was lying on the floor, unable to move.
“The monsters can’t come near Room 105! Come over here right now!”
After I screamed like a madman three or four times, the people around me finally looked my way.
One by one, they began running toward me.
As if he’d been waiting for it, the Terminator stepped between the people and the monsters. The monsters couldn’t attack because they were wary of the giant who had already taken one of them down.
How many people had that man saved in such a short time?
Honestly, even if I hadn’t called out to them, wouldn’t he have somehow beaten the two monsters to death?
Of course, judging by the blood running from all over his body, he might have died before that.
The woman near the bonsai tree, who had seemed unconscious, belatedly came to her senses.
Soon, everyone fled toward Room 105. When the Terminator and I followed, the monsters only watched us, just like before, without coming any closer.
The moment I entered the room, I was breathing heavily as I shut the door and turned around.
No one was there.
Had I been possessed by a ghost or something?
I’d clearly seen two men and around three women enter the room besides me!
Just as I thought I was getting used to strange things, the display on the wall flashed.
/Welcome, guests gathered at Hotel Pioneer!
Please refer to the following notices. Additional notices may be added, and you may view them again at any time on the hotel displays.
1. Hotel Pioneer always loves its guests.
2. Some elevator functions have been disabled. Please keep this in mind.
3. The hotel always protects its guests’ privacy. Still, wouldn’t it be nice to share a meal?/
This entire situation was full of question marks.
The display notices were the only thing offering anything close to information.
I read through them with the greatest concentration I’d ever managed in my life.
“Privacy.”
Could everyone have disappeared because of privacy?
I had just learned in the most painful way possible that common sense meant nothing here. If I tried to think as irrationally as possible, privacy couldn’t be maintained with six people in one room.
Going by the notice, it seemed everyone stayed separate in Room 105 normally and only met during mealtimes.
[Understanding of the hotel has improved slightly.]
A message immediately appeared in my Status Window, making me laugh bitterly.
That ridiculous thought had been right.
In a daze, I headed to the enormous room with the dining table.
There was a clock, and the chart beside it said that mealtimes began at 7:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., and 7:00 p.m., each lasting an hour and a half.
It was around 10:20 in the morning, so things would somehow work out once noon came.
It had been an unbelievably confusing morning.
I was so exhausted that I lay down on the bed, hoping to close my eyes for even a moment.
Tap. Tap.
“Could you wake up for a moment?”
Ah, I’d actually fallen asleep in that short time.
I jolted awake and found one of the women from earlier standing in front of me.
Was she in her mid-thirties?
She was tall, with the air of a successful city woman that anyone could recognize at a glance.
Still, there was something cold about her that made her hard to approach.
“Um... Thank you for waking me up. Where are the others?”
“Well, I didn’t think it would happen, but the moment noon struck, they popped up all over the room as if they’d been teleported. Everyone except two people has gathered in the dining room for now. Jin-cheol was injured while fighting earlier, but he somehow managed to stop the bleeding and is lying down. You were asleep, so I wondered whether I should wake you, but shouldn’t we all talk?”
“Yes. Everything’s strange, but I think we should talk first.”
“Follow me.”
As we turned and walked toward the dining room together, she suddenly turned back.
“Oh, and thank you for earlier. I thought I was about to become monster food out of nowhere, but you called out and I barely survived. I’m Lee Eun-sol.”
“No, it was Termin... I mean, Jin-cheol? He did everything. I’m Han Ga-in.”
“Han Ga-in? That’s a cute name.”
“Haha... People do tell me it sounds like a girl’s name.”
After that brief exchange, Lee Eun-sol smiled faintly and turned around again.
