Chapter 109: Welcome To (1)

──────

Life in the Forest of Four Seasons had put me through plenty of hard times.

Whenever that happened, I'd end up exhausted, holed up in my cave all day or just resting.

I rested in my own way, sometimes circulating my cultivation method too.

But I didn't smoke often.

Only when both my body and mind were worn out. I decided not to smoke unless it was one of those times.

Sizzle!

And right now was exactly one of those times. I lit the end of the cigar with an Ignition Stone.

Smoke soon began to drift from its tip, so I put it in my mouth and took a deep pull.

A cool aroma, nothing like the harshness of tobacco, filled my lungs and refreshed me.

“Phew.”

With the World Tree Tobacco between my lips, I exhaled. The smoke rose in curls before slowly fading away.

Smoking did make my head feel a little clearer. Things were still complicated, though.

I'd wanted to keep my distance from cigarettes whenever possible, but that was proving difficult.

‘I need to deal with the gorilla corpses, and they might come back for revenge... Ha...’

Thanks to the Elixir, my broken ribs had recovered to some extent.

I hadn't used up much stamina either, so I was physically fine. My head was the problem.

That was why I had put the tobacco to my lips. I wanted to sort out this mess in my mind somehow.

There was just too much to think about when it came to the gorillas.

‘Who the hell taught them martial arts?’

I could overlook the gorillas using tools. Allfather had warned me in advance.

Besides, their obsession with tools had made them easier to deal with.

But the gorilla that used martial arts was a different story. It had been an incredibly troublesome opponent.

The fusion of a gorilla's naturally powerful body and fluid technique. Every attack had been dangerous.

Thank goodness I'd trained my reaction speed with Fast Sloth. Otherwise, my head would have exploded.

‘Considering the circumstances, the owner of that palm print on the tree definitely taught them.’

I sorted through my thoughts with the tobacco still in my mouth.

To confirm the facts, I'd need to enter their territory.

Even if I caught the Leader Gorilla, it wasn't like the creature could talk.

They couldn't speak, but they were highly intelligent.

The fact that they had gone beyond using tools and learned martial arts proved that.

‘How smart do you have to be to use martial arts?’

The teacher mattered in martial arts, but so did the student.

There’s a reason the word ‘talent’ exists. Without talent, you'd just be stuck spinning your wheels.

Maybe that gorilla had more talent for martial arts than I did. The thought suddenly crossed my mind.

‘...This forest is seriously insane.’

All I could do was let out a hollow chuckle.

I took a long drag and exhaled.

It would be best to set my thoughts about the gorillas aside for now and get to work.

‘Wonmo is... asleep.’

Wonmo had been injured for the first time in his life. After receiving treatment, he was sleeping soundly on the mat.

He usually slept sprawled out, but now he was curled into a ball.

Intruders had entered his territory, so he seemed to be staying alert, ready to act at any moment.

‘Even home isn't safe anymore.’

There was no telling when the gorillas might come back.

They had even stolen my Fasting Pills. This wasn't something I could take lightly.

I couldn't leave anyone here alone. Even Fast Sloth would be in danger.

‘In the end, I definitely need to install a door.’

And it needed to be a very sturdy door.

One the gorillas couldn't easily break. It would have to be made of steel.

I'd have no choice but to ask the dwarf. I'd be the one assembling it, though.

‘Would a few chunks of Orichalcum be enough?’

I took one last deep drag, then opened the wooden box.

After tapping the ash into the ashtray, I cut off the end with my dagger.

I could still smoke it a few more times. I didn't have much tobacco, so I needed to conserve it.

‘It really is good.’

If I ran low later, I'd have to ask LetsGrowTrees.

I didn't know what that person wanted, but I'd have to hear them out first.

I picked up a shovel and various other tools, then headed outside.

Outside, I saw the dead gorilla troop.

The most striking one was the gorilla with its head cut off. The one Fast Sloth had killed.

‘First, I'll take a few pictures for the Gallery.’

I had a mountain of questions, so documenting the scene was essential.

After photographing even the tools the gorillas had used, I started cleaning up.

The gorillas were so huge that even dealing with the bodies was a struggle.

‘Should I just bury them?’

The easiest option was to dig a pit and put them in it. In other words, bury them.

I didn't need to carry every corpse to the river and throw it in.

It would be a disaster if I got attacked on the way there for no reason.

The Leader Gorilla that escaped might even bring another troop back for revenge.

‘Cutting them up... doesn't feel right either.’

They were primates, not beasts like Saber-Toothed Tigers, so cutting them into pieces felt wrong.

Some of the corpses were already badly damaged too. Digging a pit was better.

First, I gathered the bodies in one place. Finding the head for the decapitated body had been a pain, by the way.

‘I should dig the pit far away.’

I wasn't crazy enough to bury them near my shelter. I'd bury them somewhere far off.

Other beasts might come and dig them up, so I planned to make it as deep as possible.

‘This should do.’

Behind the cave was a suitably wide spot.

I dug a deep pit in a place that could easily pass for a backyard.

Moving the gorillas one by one was annoying, but I had to put up with it.

It took about an hour before I was finally able to bury the gorilla corpses.

My physical abilities, including my strength, had improved significantly. Otherwise, it would have taken at least two hours.

[Post title] Gorilla Troop Wiped Out

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo of dead gorillas)

[Post] (Photo of gorillas collapsed on the ground)

[Post] (Photo of blood-spattered dead gorillas)

[Post] (Photo of a gorilla with its severed neck discreetly hidden)

[Post] (Photo of the tools used by the gorillas)

[Post] (Photo of the gathered gorilla corpses)

[Post] I took out all the gorillas that came to rescue the hostage I’d taken.

[Post] There was a Leader Gorilla too, but it escaped.

[Post] Also, the Leader Gorilla used something like martial arts. Is that even possible?;;

└ [Heavenly Demon]: A gorilla used martial arts? What kind of techniques did it show?

└ [Wild Grylls]: It's hard to explain in detail, but I'll describe its stance first. It held its left hand out with the palm facing forward, while its right hand was clenched into a fist by its waist.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: That alone is not enough. Could you tell me a little more about what martial art it displayed?

└ [Wild Grylls]: It used palm strikes a lot. It was incredibly fast too.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Hm. There are far too many martial arts that use palm strikes. I need more distinctive traits...

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Aren't you surprised that a gorilla used martial arts in the first place?;; Something completely absurd just happened.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: That is true. I have seen countless fools worse than monkeys, but I never thought an actual monkey would use martial arts.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: You do know the difference between apes and monkeys, right?

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Whether they have tails or not. They are all monkeys to this lady.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Fair enough. Anyway, are you hurt anywhere?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I got hit in the ribs and almost died, but thankfully I survived. The Leader Gorilla's arm was broken too.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: How curious. Still, it could not have learned martial arts by itself. This lady suspects someone taught it.

└ [Wild Grylls]: (Photo of the center of a tree marked with a gorilla palm print and a human palm print) Looking at this, someone definitely taught them.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: That is a reasonable conclusion.

└ [Allfather]: There may be a survivor still alive. If they taught martial arts to a gorilla troop, they must have won in a fight.

└ [AllHailTheSun]: I'm more surprised they used tools. Aren't they actually evolving into humans?

└ [Allfather]: That is a likely hypothesis. Either they are creatures with abnormally high intelligence, or the Forest of Four Seasons is accelerating evolution.

└ Just hearing that is scary;;

└ That's why the place is overflowing with all kinds of elixirs. Makes surviving there that much harder too.

└ Grylls just got lucky.

└ None of that matters. Doesn't this mean Grylls is worse than a gorilla?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Shut up. I didn't lose.

└ If you lose, you're a bastard worse than a gorilla lol

└ For real, a bastard worse than an ape lol

└ [Wild Grylls]: Don't worry. I'm already a bastard worse than a Sloth.

└ Oh. Right. LOL

└ I forgot about that lol

└ lololololol

Once I posted in the Gallery, everyone started talking in their own way.

It was shocking enough that the gorilla had displayed martial arts, but it had used tools too.

Why had humans risen to the top of the food chain? Because they made good use of tools.

At least they had only used clubs. If they had used spears, I would have struggled.

‘And the person behind them...’

There was definitely a “master” who had taught martial arts to the gorillas.

The question was whether that master was still alive.

The gorillas had recognized me as an enemy.

If there had been a human master, they would have shown at least some curiosity about me.

‘And...’

I turned to look at Fast Sloth.

Was it because the gorillas had still taken the Fasting Pills despite Fast Sloth giving them a harsh lesson?

Fast Sloth looked especially dispirited today. But I couldn't make Fasting Pills out of nothing.

There was something else I was curious about too. What kind of creature was Fast Sloth that an entire gorilla troop feared it?

That fear had allowed me to crush the gorillas' morale. That had been the biggest factor.

“Fast Sloth.”

“...”

“Just how strong are you that the gorillas were afraid of you?”

I became curious about Fast Sloth's past.

Fast Sloth was strong. Stronger than I could imagine.

Fast Sloth treated someone like me as nothing, and even among the gorillas, Fast Sloth reigned as an object of fear.

What had this creature done before I arrived? Today, I wanted to know more than ever.

“...”

Instead of answering, Fast Sloth stared at me. The expression seemed to ask whether I wanted to know.

I met Fast Sloth's gaze for a moment, then nodded.

Even though it had been less than a month, I could understand Fast Sloth's intentions to some degree.

Scratch. Scratch.

Fast Sloth began drawing on the ground. I focused on the dirt.

Sloths were slow by nature, but I waited patiently.

‘No. Wait. It's drawing?’

I glanced at Fast Sloth. It looked like a sloth on the outside, but I started wondering if there was a person inside.

Of course, like the evolved gorillas, it might have evolved in another direction.

Nothing would be strange in the Forest of Four Seasons. I should just let it go.

Thinking about every little thing would only give me a headache.

Scratch. Scratch.

As ten minutes passed, the drawing gradually took shape.

The first thing Fast Sloth drew was itself.

Short legs compared to its long arms. Claws at the ends of its fingers. Even its peaceful expression.

Anyone could tell it was Fast Sloth. But there wasn't just one.

Two, three, four, all the way to ten.

It looked like a picture of Fast Sloth's “family.”

Tap. Tap.

Fast Sloth pointed a claw at the smallest Fast Sloth, no, the smallest sloth among them.

It seemed to mean that was itself.

I nodded to show that I understood.

‘But there weren't any other family members...’

The thought had barely crossed my mind when...

Scrape.

Fast Sloth slashed one of the sloths in the group with a claw.

Anyone could see it meant the sloth had died.

Scrape. Scratch.

One by one, Fast Sloth slashed every member of the troop other than itself.

Only after slashing even the sloth standing right beside it did Fast Sloth stop.

That gave me a few possible conclusions. First, Fast Sloth had once had a troop too.

Second, that troop had been wiped out for some reason, leaving Fast Sloth as the only survivor.

Finally, the reason they had been wiped out was...

“...The gorillas?”

“...”

Fast Sloth didn't answer at all. It only stared at the ground.

But that was answer enough.

Fast Sloth's troop had lost to the gorilla troop.

Only Fast Sloth, the sole survivor, had made it out alive.

‘A troop of something this strong?’

The gorilla troop seemed to be far stronger than I had imagined.

Unless...

‘The person who taught them martial arts fought for them instead.’

It wasn't very hopeful news.
