◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈

Chapter 110: Welcome To (2)

──────

The annihilation of a group, like what Fast Sloth went through, was something that happened not only in the wild, but in civilization as well.

Outsiders drove out the natives who had originally lived there and took their place.

There were cases in history where natives fought to the end, only to kneel before the outsiders' overwhelming military might.

‘So it really got strong just to survive.’

Once I understood Fast Sloth's past, I saw it differently.

It hadn't been abnormally strong from the start. Like me, it had grown strong just to survive.

It must have had all kinds of conflicts with the gorilla troop that had claimed the territory in the process.

‘Seeing how the gorillas trembled in fear...’

There was a good chance it had gone beyond merely wreaking havoc on its own. It had the strength for it, too.

Either way, Fast Sloth lived with me now. I couldn't ask for a more reassuring companion.

Of course, I still needed to prepare defenses. The gorillas could come swarming in tomorrow.

‘Should I move?’

The option crossed my mind, but I quickly discarded it. That was a last resort.

It would mean abandoning the barricades and other tools as they were.

More than anything, as long as there was a river nearby, I had to protect this base.

‘I’ll protect this place no matter what.’

Then how could I defend it easily?

The best method was to lure them into the narrow cave entrance. The gorillas were huge.

Even if they forced their way inside, two at a time would be the limit. That would make it easier to pick them off one by one.

‘But will they just play along?’

They were intelligent creatures that even knew how to use tactics.

I didn't know whether they would let me lead them by the nose.

Still, it was better than doing nothing, so I began planning.

‘If I want to use a narrow space like I did against the Owlbear...’

In the end, I needed a door. And one sturdier than wood.

Passing Dwarf had once asked why I needed a door when it would just get smashed anyway.

Then why not build a much stronger door? It was a very simple solution.

Someone might ask why I didn't just buy a safe, but if I was going that far, it would be better to put a safe in front of the entrance.

A small safe was out of the question since the gorillas could just carry the whole thing off.

‘There must be something like CCTV too, right?’

I'd ask Passing Dwarf for the door and PrincessChaenggu about the CCTV.

PrincessChaenggu would probably give me one willingly, but you never knew. Someone else might have one.

After getting the basics together, I immediately made a post in the gallery.

[Post title] Does anyone have something that records video? Not in the gallery, I mean.

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] The gorillas raided my house this time, so I'm thinking of installing some security measures.

[Post] Is there anything that can record video while I'm away? I hear there are broadcasting orbs too. Couldn't I use one of those somehow?

[Post] I'm also planning to build a door, and I want it to be sturdy. Could use some advice.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Wouldn't the gorillas just break down the door?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Then I'll build a door sturdy enough that they can't.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: A simple answer, but not a bad one.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Why not just buy a safe? Something like an Owlbear could break it with a body slam.

└ [Wild Grylls]: I'm planning on getting a chest separately. The gorillas might carry the entire safe away.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Are the gorillas really that smart?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I think it'd be easier to just treat them like idiots.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: I do have what you're talking about. But it's expensive as fuck, so it'll be hard for you to buy.

└ [Wild Grylls]: How about 1 kg of Orichalcum?

└ [Passing Dwarf]: You rich bastard.

└ [Wild Grylls]: lol

└ Someone has an Orichalcum vein in the cave in front of their house;;

└ Won't adamantium show up eventually too?

└ Not impossible. But isn't adamantium found deep underground?

└ Who knows if Grylls starts mining later?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Why the hell would I go mining, you bastards?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: I have what you mentioned, Mr. Grylls. Want me to give you oneee?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Then I'll trade with you tomorrow after I visit the Orichalcum cave. Is it used like a crystal ball?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: I'm not sure which crystal ball you mean, but it should be similarrr. I can modify it with Orichalcum so it won't overheat too.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Thank you!

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: And how should you thank meee?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Chaeyu is invincible, and Kone is a god.

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Wow! You really know what to say! Excellenttt!

└ He's going to wear his tongue raw at this rate lol

└ At that point, isn't he seriously becoming a Chaenggu? lol

└ Seems like he's already Chaenggu-fied, yeah.

Using the gallery's collective intelligence, I discussed how to renovate my shelter.

The first thing to do was narrow the cave entrance.

I planned to use bricks, like when I made the oven.

‘Passing Dwarf said they’d make the iron door.’

It would be an iron door mixed with Orichalcum.

Just as Orichalcum absorbed mana, it would be modified to absorb impacts as well.

Of course, Passing Dwarf explained that its impact absorption rate would be far lower than adamantium's.

‘Do I really have to mine for it?’

Mining, the essential busywork in that blocky game.

The thought that I might have to do that already made my head spin.

Still, the Forest of Four Seasons was a place where, if mining became necessary, I'd have no choice but to do it.

After writing down my plans in my notebook, I looked around.

‘At least they only stole the Fasting Pills. If they'd stolen the Elixir...’

I needed to hide important things in a corner where they would be hard to find.

While I made plans to renovate the shelter bit by bit, evening arrived before I knew it.

I went up to the river to catch fish in the Fish Trap or cook food in the oven.

I set about wrapping up the day's chores, which were particularly grueling today.

Oh, and I fed Fast Sloth the remaining Fasting Pills.

They had been emergency rations, so it would be able to hold out until tomorrow morning.

‘Will the gorillas come tomorrow?’

Even if they did, I had no intention of letting them have their way.

While circulating my cultivation method, I thought of the Leader Gorilla I had fought today.

Normally, I wasn't supposed to have distracting thoughts while using the Inner Energy Cultivation Method. Yet somehow, I felt even more focused.

My breathing continued unconsciously while the fight with the Leader Gorilla replayed in my head.

‘When it hit my ribs, I couldn't even see it.’

It had been the price of letting my guard down, but I hadn't seen the Leader Gorilla's final attack.

An attack that came from outside my field of vision. I needed to keep that in mind.

It would be nice if I could glimpse the future like in some pirate manga, but that was probably beyond me for now.

I gradually continued my mental rehearsal, then focused solely on my cultivation method.

“Whew...”

Once I finished circulating it, I slowly opened my eyes.

By tomorrow, two weeks would have passed since I fell into the Forest of Four Seasons.

It felt like more than a month had passed, yet it had only been two weeks. I must have been living in a complete frenzy.

Part of it was because every minute and second felt precious, so I had tried to use them as efficiently as possible.

‘Still, it's more manageable than I thought.’

The Owlbear, the Saber-Toothed Tiger, the Orichalcum Guardian, and finally, the Leader Gorilla.

Each one had been difficult to face, but I had somehow endured.

Of course, I couldn't deny that Fast Sloth's help had made the biggest difference.

Still, what mattered was that I had survived. I would survive somehow.

‘Somehow.’

I would escape this hell.

* * *

The next day came. As soon as dawn broke, I got to work.

My shelter had been attacked yesterday, but that didn't mean I could put off what needed to be done.

Besides, I planned to renovate the shelter today, so I had to move quickly.

“Fast Sloth, this is the last one.”

“...”

“I'll somehow get more, so make do with grass for a while.”

Fast Sloth's last Fasting Pill. It looked sadly at the pill before putting it into its mouth.

It was pitiful to watch, but remembering that I was the one paying it tribute gave me mixed feelings.

Still, every offering I made to it extended my lifeline, so it was worth it.

‘Heavenly Demon said making Fasting Pills takes time too.’

I heard they were made from expensive medicinal herbs.

She said it would take at least a week, but I didn't know whether Fast Sloth could hold out until then.

If things didn't work out, I would have no choice but to go exploring for medicinal herbs.

There was a colony of Adult Mandrakes, so there had to be an herb field somewhere too.

‘Let's see... Should I narrow the entrance this much?’

I got to work narrowing the cave entrance.

It had been widened because the Owlbear forced its way inside.

Narrow terrain was an advantage for me.

‘Exploring will be difficult. I should just visit the Orichalcum cave and come back.’

I didn't know when the gorillas might attack again.

Of course, there was a chance they wouldn't come now that I had made it clear this was our territory.

More importantly, Fast Sloth was here. Unless they came in a group...

Rustle. Rustle.

I was examining the cave entrance when a rustling sound reached my ears.

‘Surely not...’

I turned my head, and the rustling steadily grew louder.

“...”

As it got closer, I silently armed myself.

Fast Sloth seemed to sense something too and climbed onto my back. Wonmo came over to my side as well.

Soon, when the rustling became much louder...

“...Prrr.”

It was as large as the Leader Gorilla, but everything from its posture to its appearance was different.

The gorillas beside it had both arms planted on the ground, while the gorilla leading them stood on two legs.

More importantly...

“...Clothes?”

It was wearing clothes. They were old and tattered, little more than rags, but they were still clothes.

They had yellowed with grime, and the dye had faded until they were nearly white, though patches of black remained here and there.

And its face. Five distinct claw marks ran across its left eye.

Compared to its intact eye, the injured one had turned white. I could roughly guess that it was blind.

It wasn't merely unusual. It was extraordinary. That was my impression of this newly appeared gorilla.

‘Did it get hand-me-downs from a human?’

That was what it looked like. Judging by those worn-out rags, it seemed to have worn them for at least ten years.

Usually, something like that meant they were a dead person's belongings...

Would a gorilla understand that meaning?

‘And they're carrying spears too? What the hell is this?’

The gorillas at its sides took things further. They held spears instead of clubs.

They were crudely made wooden spears, but they were still spears. Evolution on par with humans.

I was watching them with my guard up when...

Squeeze!

A strong grip clamped down on my shoulder. Fast Sloth had grabbed it with its hand.

I turned to look at Fast Sloth. Its brow was slightly furrowed.

It usually kept a blank expression, so this much emotion was unusual.

‘Could that scar over its eye...?’

The pieces were gradually falling into place.

The gorilla I assumed was their Chief glanced to the side, then gave a slight nod.

One of the spear-wielding gorillas headed somewhere.

It soon returned carrying something and handed it to the Chief Gorilla.

Whoosh!

The Chief threw the item toward me.

It didn't feel like a declaration of war. It felt more like it was simply giving it to me.

Thud!

The item landed on the ground before long. I stared at it.

A long yellow fruit. Not just one, but several bunches.

“...Bananas?”

The Chief Gorilla had thrown bananas to me. At first, I had no idea what they meant.

But considering what had happened yesterday, it seemed to mean this.

I apologize for yesterday. To make up for it, take these bananas.

In other words, it was an apology in the form of fruit. I faced the Chief Gorilla with a dumbfounded look.

Then...

“Ttuippuchi.”

The gorilla spoke a human “language.”

I couldn't understand it clearly, but it had definitely used language.

A gorilla that only made beastly cries couldn't say something like that.

‘...Fuck. It really is Planet of the Apes.’

A rough voice shouting “NO!!!” echoed through my head.
