Chapter 148: Spring (3)

──────

My pollen allergy wasn’t that bad.

I just sneezed and got a runny nose. Nothing beyond that.

Especially if I wore a mask, it was practically nonexistent.

“Achoo! Snff!”

Thankfully, the pollen in the Forest of Four Seasons was similar.

It was only dense enough to rival Chinese yellow dust rather than Korean yellow dust. The symptoms themselves were no different.

Putting on the face covering AllHailTheSun had given me as a substitute mask made things much better.

There was nothing I could do about the pollen I’d already inhaled, though.

‘How do animals survive in an environment like this?’

I looked back and forth between Fast Sloth and Wonmo.

Fast Sloth tossed Firewood into the fireplace, while Wonmo stared at me with wide eyes.

How had those two adapted to such a shitty environment? I was a little curious.

‘No matter what, a home is essential.’

It wasn’t a choice. It was a necessity for survival.

If I hadn’t claimed this cave, I probably would’ve been caught up in a disaster and died.

Whenever I explored, it would be a good idea to look for places where I could take shelter from disasters.

‘The pollen’s died down a little too.’

The pollen dust storm had almost faded away.

It looked like all the flowers had bloomed at once when spring arrived, causing all that pollen to blow around.

I knew pollen usually got bad around April and May, but the Forest of Four Seasons didn’t give a damn about any of that.

Spring arrived, and it was like, Yayyy, it’s spring! Let’s all bloom now! Done!

‘The problem is that it all bursts out at once.’

I headed outside with my face covering on.

My nose itched, but not enough to make me sneeze. The runny nose was unavoidable, though.

I’d have to wash the face covering properly later. After gearing up, I headed out to collect gravel.

I brought Fast Sloth and Wonmo along for the first time in a while. They both looked fine despite the pollen.

“Achoo!”

Or maybe not. Were they just holding it in?

Seeing Wonmo sneeze, it seemed like it simply varied from one individual to another.

It was a pollen allergy, after all. There was a big difference between having one and not having one.

When I reached the river, it was still frozen over.

The inside must have thawed, because the water was rushing beneath the ice.

‘It should be about time to set up the Fish Traps too.’

From now on, I planned to set up two Fish Traps instead of one.

After experiencing how suddenly winter could arrive, I needed more smoked food.

‘Do frogs hibernate too?’

As I gathered gravel into a sack, I kept an eye on my surroundings.

A frog or something else could suddenly jump out.

Maybe because spring had only just arrived, I couldn’t see a single animal.

After filling the sack with gravel, I returned to the cave. All I had to do was spread it over the ground and compact it.

‘Why is this mud so damn sloppy?’

The yard was wide, though, so I had no choice but to make several trips.

It hadn’t been this bad when it first rained. Winter had turned it into this mess.

The ground freezing solid was part of it, but the snow had probably been the deciding factor.

Even though I’d scattered salt around now and then, I couldn’t stop the ground from freezing.

‘The ground’s dealt with. Shall I start building?’

It was time to rebuild the oven and blast furnace the avalanche had swept away.

I planned to build them sturdily enough to withstand future disasters.

‘To anchor them properly, I should dig into the ground a little.’

I dug down, then laid bricks underneath.

After that, I stacked bricks one by one, just as I had before.

I even spread mortar made by mixing sand and cement between them.

Finally, I slid the tray in and out to check the size, and that completed it.

Preparing took a while, but I’d already built one before, so the actual construction didn’t take long.

‘Just in case, I should build a wall behind it.’

Having learned from the avalanche that had come from behind the cave, I built it right up against the cave.

That wasn’t enough to put me at ease, though, so I decided to build a sturdy wall behind the oven.

It would be better than having it collapse and rebuilding it every time a disaster struck.

‘Hmm... Will this work?’

Somehow, I ended up building a barricade instead of a wall.

The wall wrapped around the entire oven. It wasn’t exactly thin either.

I wondered if I’d overdone it, but it was already built. Nothing I could do now.

‘Now for the blast furnace.’

I built the blast furnace right against the cave as well.

I didn’t forget to build walls around it like I had around the oven.

I’d applied the cement carefully, so it shouldn’t collapse so easily.

‘Hmm. Perfect.’

With the cave in the middle, the oven and blast furnace stood on either side.

I left space along the sides in case I wanted to expand later(?).

With a satisfied expression, I took a picture of the front of the cave and posted it to the Gallery.

[Post title] Rebuilt

[Post] As of today, winter has passed in the Forest of Four Seasons, and spring has arrived.

[Post] As soon as spring came, I rebuilt everything the avalanche swept away.

[Post] Now I can get back to living properly.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: It looks like wings. You seem well versed in construction too.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Thanks hehe

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Did you spread gravel over the ground because of the mud?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah. Rain is manageable, but when winter comes, it gets way too muddy.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Good choice. Come to think of it, did you learn to spread gravel in the military?

└ [Wild Grylls]: How did you know?

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: I did too.

└ They really teach you every damn thing in the military, huh?

└ That’s because all kinds of people end up there. You see people and wonder, Why are they even in the military?

└ The only useful thing I learned was spear fighting. Having a spear makes a huge difference.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Right. Hey, my mold didn’t get swept away too, did it?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Nah. I could move the mold, so I brought it inside.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Good. That thing’s expensive, you punk.

└ [Wild Grylls]: No way it costs more than Mithril lol

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Got nothing to say to that, fuck lmao

└ [Wild Grylls]: Ah, and can you give me two Fish Traps? I think I’ll be making lots of smoked food from now on.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: I can, but do you have anything to give me?

└ [Wild Grylls]: If I find something good to infuse in liquor, I’ll tell you right away.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Kk

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: That’s an impressive layout. Are bricks really that sturdy?

└ [Wild Grylls]: They’re useless in the face of nature, but they are sturdy. Plus, I used cement this time, so they should be even stronger.

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: I see. That may be useful later. Are you only planning to do that for now?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I have more to do. I need to gather Firewood and make charcoal too.

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: It must be hard, having to build everything yourself.

└ [Wild Grylls]: It is hard, but finishing it feels rewarding.

Hard work pays off.

It’s hard to put into words how satisfying it is to finish something I designed.

I made it because I needed it, but I couldn’t hide my satisfaction.

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: I see. Then, are you planning to farm as well?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I’ll give it a try, but won’t it be difficult?

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: Since this is the Forest of Four Seasons, it may not be difficult.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Maybe.

└ [GrowBigAndStrong]: You’re treating farming like it’s a fucking joke;; Do you know how hard it is just to till a field? lol

└ [Wild Grylls]: Is it really that hard?

└ [GrowBigAndStrong]: Honestly, soil quality matters most, but the weather there is fucked up, so it’ll be even harder. You said the seasons change every week, right?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah.

└ [GrowBigAndStrong]: Then normal farming knowledge might be useless. The weather keeps changing, so plants won’t be able to grow properly.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Hmm... All right. I’ll keep that in mind.

└ [HouseholdMasterRobert]: That was a problem I hadn’t considered. I only just realized it.

The explanation from a registered user who seemed to be an active farmer made me hesitate.

They added that if I wanted to gamble at a casino, I should farm instead.

Farming was labor as unpredictable as gambling, and this was the Forest of Four Seasons.

‘There’s fertilizer, watering... There really is a lot to consider.’

I already had a lot to do. Adding farming to the list would make things difficult in every way.

The Forest of Four Seasons was especially prone to disasters whenever it felt like it.

I was already busy keeping myself alive. I didn’t have the spare energy to focus on farming.

The only consolation was that this would be closer to maintaining a small vegetable garden than actual farming.

‘Should I ask the raccoon family?’

I immediately abandoned that idea too. The father raccoon was busy searching for medicinal herbs.

The mother raccoon would be busy caring for the baby raccoon. I couldn’t think of any suitable labor.

‘Still, I should at least look for a spot, just in case.’

It was only a precaution. I’d farm when I truly had the time to spare.

I carried on without incident until lunch. For lunch, I ate fish that had been left in an iron container.

Maybe because I hadn’t eaten fish in so long, it tasted even better.

[Passing Dwarf]: Here, two Fish Traps.

[Passing Dwarf]: Make sure they don’t break from now on.

[You]: I’ll try.

[You]: Season changes aside, I never know when it’ll rain.

[You]: Ah. Can you give me a barricade too?

[Passing Dwarf]: Just stack bricks thickly.

[Passing Dwarf]: That’d be much better.

[Passing Dwarf]: You think so too, right?

[Passing Dwarf]: Yeah. No matter how impressive wood is, it can’t hold a candle to stone.

[Passing Dwarf]: Unless it’s the World Tree.

The World Tree.

Come to think of it, I’d seen a massive tree before.

When Heavenly Demon taught me the second set of mnemonic verses and I experienced an out-of-body state.

I couldn’t be sure if that had been the World Tree, but I needed to check.

[You]: Is the World Tree really that sturdy?

[Passing Dwarf]: Its branches are better than steel.

[Passing Dwarf]: That says enough, right?

[You]: Holy shit. Then what about the gloves I got from the elf before?

[You]: Are its leaves just ordinary leaves?

[Passing Dwarf]: Yeah, but the silkworms aren’t ordinary silkworms either.

[Passing Dwarf]: I don’t know what that knife-ear was thinking, but they gave you something really good.

The gloves LetsGrowTrees had given me were useful, and I was using them well.

What I’d given them back then was a Guardian’s Core. I didn’t know what they were doing with it now.

LetsGrowTrees showed up in the Gallery sometimes, but as always, they only went on about planting trees.

‘I hope there’s something useful, whether it’s the World Tree or something else.’

It was too far away to make a round trip anyway.

After thanking the dwarf, I checked the Fish Traps.

Normally, it would be better to go to the river tomorrow, but food had to be secured regularly.

I thought it would be best to break the ice myself and set up the Fish Traps.

‘The other side of the river is grassland this time.’

The space across the river changed on a certain cycle.

I didn’t know the interval of that cycle, or what it would change into.

Before long, I’d need to figure out that pattern too. That way, my range of activity could expand...

“...Huh?”

...but what was that? I blinked.

Since it was grassland, I could accept that there were all sorts of animals.

I could even let it slide that there was a giraffe, and that the giraffe was fighting a predator.

But I couldn’t just ignore the person riding on top of that giraffe and swinging a sword. A giraffe wasn’t a horse.

Rub, rub.

The situation was so unbelievable that I rubbed my eyes and looked again.

Unfortunately, the space across the river blurred like a mirage, as though it was time for it to change.

Then, all I could see was a barren rocky area instead of grassland.

The knight riding the giraffe had vanished without a trace.

‘Was there really a person there...?’

I only held onto that faint hope for a moment.

‘But they were riding a giraffe.’

They were even fighting like a knight.

Seeing such a bizarre sight left me confused.
