◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 149: Countermeasure (1)
──────
The confusion caused by the sight of a knight riding a giraffe only lasted a moment. They had already disappeared, and there was nothing I could do about it, so I decided to focus on what I needed to do first.
First, I had to break the ice covering the river, put my hand into the water, and stir up the Golden Frog.
Of course, it would be better if the Golden Frog stayed asleep and didn't show up.
Then I wouldn't have to waste time because of it.
Splash-
“Gah!”
The instant I put my hand in, a strange cry slipped out. It was way too cold.
I'd gotten a rough idea from the water coming through the hose, but it felt even colder against my skin.
Still, I had to endure it to solve the food problem.
Fortunately, the Golden Frog seemed to be hibernating, because it didn't appear.
“Ghh... Brrr.”
That didn't change how cold it was. This was why I'd wanted cold resistance.
Shivering from the chill that rushed over me as soon as I stepped in, I set up the Fish Trap.
The shoes I'd traded for so far were waterproof, but the river was too deep.
I had no choice but to go in wearing sneakers.
‘Just ten minutes. I only have to suffer for ten minutes...!’
There was a risk of frostbite, but it would be fine. I didn't have cold resistance, but I did have cold energy.
It should give me some resistance, so I wasn't worried about frostbite. It was just insanely cold.
After finishing setting up the Fish Trap, I hurried back to the cave.
The first thing I did after returning was heat some water and soak my feet in it.
I wasn't supposed to get frostbite, but it was better to be safe.
As I sat there soaking my feet, the sight I'd just seen came back to me.
‘But was that person I saw across the river really real?’
Riding a giraffe was one thing, but they had even swung a sword like a knight.
Even the predators gathered around them, lions to be exact, hadn't been able to approach easily.
‘Wait. Come to think of it, wasn't that sword glowing?’
The sword in the knight's hand had definitely been glowing green.
The light had been faint, but it was clearly green.
Only the Mislicon I'd given away should glow green.
‘Then was it Ludwig?’
Ludwig. The holy knight famous for his upright character.
And the person who made posts in the Gallery like a total old man.
It really could have been him, riding a giraffe and swinging a sword.
‘What shitty timing.’
I thought as I warmed my feet in the heated water.
The more I thought about it, the more disappointing the timing was. Why did the space have to shift right then?
If I'd had another minute, no, even thirty more seconds, I could've gotten a better look.
‘My luck is seriously garbage.’
The knight I suspected was Ludwig had probably not seen me.
He had been in the middle of a fierce battle with lions. Would he have had time to look across the river?
‘Come to think of it, didn't they say giraffes don't exist in this world?’
I wasn't completely sure, but I remembered hearing that.
Still, just in case, I searched the Gallery for giraffes.
Nothing came up. There were posts where the syllables "gi" and "raffe" appeared separately, but nothing about an animal called a giraffe.
Unicorns and pegasi existed, on the other hand. They were treated as common knowledge.
Of course, they might have used a different name, so I even drew a picture to check.
[Post title] Does an Animal Like This Exist?
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] (Photo of a giraffe drawing I made)
[Post] Is there an animal with a long neck and legs like the one in the picture? Where I used to live, we called it a giraffe.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: It is not even a spiritual treasure. I have never seen such a bizarre animal before.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Same here. I've never seen or even heard of an animal like that.
└ [PrincessChaenggu]: A creature with such a long neck somehow looks sad. hehe¹
└ [Starlight Princess]: How does it eat with a neck that long?
└ [AllHailTheSun]: It's... it's strange enough that I want one.
└ [Smart Demon]: It's ugly as fuck lmao
└ Does it use its neck like a whip when it fights? lmao
└ [Wild Grylls]: How did you know? I heard it really does beat the shit out of things by swinging its neck. Or it uses its back legs to kick.
└ What the fuck kind of animal is that? Your imagination is crazy lmao
└ What if it hits something with its neck and breaks it?;;
└ That’s the most inefficient body imaginable lmao
└ [Allfather]: Ho. What an interesting animal. There was once an animal similar to it in the past.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Really?
└ [Allfather]: Yes. They were monsters called dinosaurs, considered the ancestors of dragons and drakes. Some of those dinosaurs had very long necks.
└ Did those dinosaurs fight with their necks too?
└ [Allfather]: According to one theory, they used their long tails like whips. Wyverns are descendants of dinosaurs as well.
Were they talking about Brachiosaurus? It was surprising that dinosaurs had existed in this world too.
No. More surprising was that these people couldn't even accept the existence of giraffes.
‘Then what was the giraffe I saw?’
Maybe giraffes had lost in the food chain and gone extinct.
The Forest of Four Seasons was a place where even herbivores were insanely strong, so perhaps they had survived there.
It was a fairly reasonable theory. If that wasn't it, then...
‘Could it be connected to Earth...?’
Just as I had suddenly fallen into the Forest of Four Seasons, animals from Earth had come to the Forest of Four Seasons too.
I was an animal too, after all, so my existence was one piece of evidence for that theory.
I knew the result, but I had no way to figure out the cause.
‘I guess I'll have to look into it carefully.’
The conclusion was that I needed to learn more about this forest.
I had a feeling that coming here hadn't been a coincidence.
Survival was important, but exploration mattered too. If I found a clue, I could improve my chances of escape.
‘I've been writing in my diary regularly, so time is the only answer.’
I'd realized that the seasons changed every week, so I planned to spend more time exploring.
Originally, I'd intended to stay at the shelter until I grew stronger, but it wouldn't be good if that period dragged on too long.
Besides, winter would force me to rest anyway.
Of course, now that I knew there were survivors, I first came up with a countermeasure.
‘I need to give survivors something that could help them survive.’
Was Ludwig, the knight riding the giraffe, really the only one who had entered the Forest of Four Seasons?
I'd heard that some people had been forcibly shoved in by Ludwig too.
If they were lucky, they might be surviving somewhere in the Forest of Four Seasons, just like Ludwig.
But from what I'd experienced, the Forest of Four Seasons was a place where it was almost impossible to survive without a base.
More than that, without proper tools, survival rates would hit rock bottom.
‘The Gallery helped me, so I need to help them too.’
Anyone who entered the Forest of Four Seasons besides me wouldn't be able to use the Gallery.
The same went for finding their location. Asking the Head Mod wouldn't help.
All I could do was throw survival supplies across the river.
I didn't know where they were, so this was the best I could do.
‘Food is the most important thing for survival, but...’
Unfortunately, food was the one thing I couldn't provide.
I needed to keep building up supplies from now on because of winter.
Which meant I could support them with almost everything except food.
‘For example, weapons.’
Weapons were extremely important in the Forest of Four Seasons.
I'd gotten Heavenly Demon’s Sword and made it through countless crises because of it.
I didn't know how Ludwig was doing, but he seemed to be surviving somehow with the Mislicon sword.
‘I’ll make swords and throw them across the river. That should work.’
It was the best countermeasure I could think of. Nothing else came to mind.
There was one more method. The Signpost I'd put up near the cave.
I could put up a huge sign that could be seen from across the river.
It would be roughly like the signs at the front lines that guided defectors.
‘I should've done this sooner...’
I hadn't put up a separate Signpost by the river. But that had been a big mistake.
I'd carelessly assumed Ludwig would end up on this side.
That was why it had never occurred to me that the sign needed to be visible from across the river.
If I'd put up a Signpost, Ludwig might have already crossed over.
What a shame.
I planned to learn from this mistake and put instructions on it in every language.
Not just for Ludwig, but so it would be fine no matter when or where someone entered.
‘I can ask the Gallery about the languages of each country.’
Languages differed by race and country, but I had the Gallery.
The registered users all came from different places too, so they should know.
‘The sign needs to be huge no matter what.’
Just as I had made the Signpost, I could make this one in a similar way.
It would be much bigger, though, so it was bound to take a lot of work. Joining all the lumber together would be especially difficult.
I made a large sign by fitting wooden planks one by one onto long poles.
You might think that would make it hard to write on, but don't worry.
‘I can attach a huge sheet of paper to it.’
With paper, it was easy. I didn't have to write directly on the sign.
Pleased with the sign that was clearly visible from afar, I logged into the Gallery.
Then I bought a sheet of paper to attach to it and asked the registered users for help.
[Heavenly Demon]: Will it do if I write exactly what you told me to?
[You]: Yes. Please.
[Heavenly Demon]: It is not difficult.
[Heavenly Demon]: Wait a moment.
[You]: All right.
[Heavenly Demon]: (Photo of a sheet of paper with instructions written in the Central Plains language)
[Heavenly Demon]: Will this do?
[You]: Thank you!
[You]: I think this every time I see it, but your handwriting is really beautiful.
[Heavenly Demon]: Thank you.
I first received a notice written in the Central Plains language from Heavenly Demon.
[SwordTasteMaster]: (Photo of a sheet of paper with explanations written in the Messiah Empire language)
[SwordTasteMaster]: Would this work?
[You]: Yes!
[You]: Thank you so much!
[SwordTasteMaster]: Wait a second.
[SwordTasteMaster]: I'll give it to you again...!
[You]: Huh?
[SwordTasteMaster]: (Photo of a sheet of paper with instructions written in the Messiah Empire language)
[SwordTasteMaster]: I'll give it to you again hehe;
[You]: What did you write the first time?
[SwordTasteMaster]: I wrote, "Get stronger and marry me."
[You]: ;;;
I received the Messiah Empire version from SwordTasteMaster, who had briefly gotten playful.
[Passing Dwarf]: Sheesh.
[Passing Dwarf]: Never thought I'd be doing something like this in my life lol
[You]: Try to understand how I feel.
[You]: I'm desperate too.
[Passing Dwarf]: Fine.
[Passing Dwarf]: Wait a little.
I received a notice written in the dwarves' language from Passing Dwarf.
For the rest, I got translated notices from PrincessChaenggu, Allfather, AllHailTheSun, LetsGrowTrees, SuspiciouslySo, and others.
I asked more people too and received versions in the languages of various countries and races.
Someone might ask why I didn't just write a post in the Gallery, but it felt like that would be too scattered, so I went through the trouble.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: (Photo of a sheet of paper with instructions written in the El Dorado language)
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Will this work?!
[You]: Thank you.
[You]: I really hope Ludwig sees this.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Did you perhaps see Ludwig?!
[You]: I think I did, but I'm not sure.
[You]: He was riding a giraffe and swinging the sword I gave him.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: A giraffe...
[DontAbandonTheHero]: You mean that bizarre animal Gliss posted about?!
[You]: Yes.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: I see!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: It's strange, but I'm relieved to hear he's alive!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Please contact me immediately if you confirm that he’s alive!
[You]: All right.
Finally, I received instructions in the El Dorado language from the Head Mod, who was from El Dorado.
I copied the translated notices I had received from every country and race onto the sheet of paper.
I used black paint so they would stand out clearly against the white paper.
‘There are so many languages, this is exhausting.’
The sheet was huge, and filling it with writing in foreign languages was quite difficult.
I especially had to use the space efficiently, so concentration was important.
Once I had finished adding the instructions in every language, I smiled as I looked at the notice.
They roughly said this.
Wild Grylls, a registered user of the Gallery, welcomes all survivors!
If you see this, follow the Signpost down! You will find a cave!
We're stronger together! Let's make it through this together!
How should I put it? It wasn't so much an instruction notice as... something else.
‘It kind of feels like one of those government notices trying to entice people into naturalizing...’
Anyway, with the instructions done, all that remained was making survival supplies.
‘Let's hurry.’
There was no point making a sign if they couldn't survive.
I gripped my pickaxe and mined the Mithril buried in the cave.
And then,
‘Please survive.’
I prayed desperately that someone would survive and make it here.
Footnotes:
¹ PrincessChaenggu playfully echoes No Cheonmyeong’s poem “The Deer,” which associates a long neck with sadness.
