◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 5: Crisis (2)
──────
Contrary to the notice posted by the Head Mod, the gallery had an unspoken rule.
No matter how difficult things were or how pitiful someone's circumstances seemed, don't help them carelessly.
Even if someone's injured, don't rush in to help.
The reason for rules like that was simple.
[Post title] Fucking scammer bastard
[Post] (Photo of a sickly girl lying down)
[Post] You all know this photo, right? A registered user said their daughter had an incurable illness and begged for help.
[Post] Turns out the bastard was abusing their own daughter and deliberately starving her;;
[Post] Then they begged for money because they were broke, so I donated. Fuck, I got scammed.
└ ;;; Is that something a person can do? Even demonkind wouldn't go that far.
└ [PrincessChaenggu]: We demonkind don't do things like that. What kind of demon does that?
└ What about Dark Elves?
└ [AllHailTheSun]: We have consciences too. You think our skin's black, so our consciences must be black too?
└ Caught you lol
└ [AllHailTheSun]: Fuck, where do you live? I'm coming over.
└ So how'd that bastard get exposed?
└ Apparently they got exposed after gambling with their own daughter on the line. Their eyes were gouged out afterward.
└ Damn;;
└ [Satan]: : Ah, that's a bit much;;
There had been countless cases like that. Anyone could use the gallery as long as they met certain conditions.
But that "anyone" was the problem. Even people with unclear identities could use it.
From the high and mighty to criminals buried in society's lowest depths.
That's why criminals were usually made to wear mana-control anklets that kept them from using the gallery.
Serious offenders received an even harsher punishment. Their eyeballs were removed altogether.
But what if someone's genuinely sick?
You know, people who really can't afford treatment. Are they just supposed to die?
└ Earn money honestly, dumbass. Why are you just begging?
└ You think the rest of us aren't strapped for cash too?
└ Fuck, there goes all my faith in humanity lol.
└ Faith in humanity, my ass. Ignore anyone begging for money. Most of them are gamblers anyway.
└ I'm not giving anything to people who aren't registered users, yeah.
So the gallery users had come to an agreement. They would ignore people asking for money whenever possible.
They'd think long and hard before giving out medicine or anything similar, too.
Even ordinary healing potions could be resold for a profit.
It might seem cold, but all the malice that had built up over time had made things this way.
Of course, it was all a personal choice. No one encouraged it, but no one stopped it either.
It wasn't their business, after all. It meant everyone should decide for themselves.
└ That's basically the situation. Hang in there.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Fuck, thanks for the infodump, asshole.
└ It's nothing lol.
└ Even a potion probably wouldn't be enough for a wound that bad. There's the risk of infection too.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Then what do I do?
└ Cut it off.
└ That's fucking extreme lololol.
"Fuck."
I understood it, but it was still a goddamn awful rule. I spat out a curse.
You could say I'd let my guard down. I'd been so exhausted that I dozed off for a moment, and this was what happened.
At least it hadn't bitten my neck, only my arm. I used that opening to cut the bastard's throat with my sword.
'Should I just cut it off?'
I stared at my wrecked right arm. It was riddled with holes and torn up badly besides.
That dog bastard had clamped down on my arm and shaken me around like crazy. I barely kept it from being ripped off.
'I need to stop the bleeding...'
I looked around the cave. Since wild dogs had used it, there wasn't much inside.
Just bones that looked like they belonged to other animals. Seeing those, I should've had some idea of what to expect.
'Should I sell the sword if I have to?'
I felt terrible toward the Heavenly Demon, but I was at the point where I needed to sell the sword and get medicine.
My life was in danger right now. The gallery didn't look inclined to help me either.
Verify my identity? Who would believe I'd come from another world? They'd think I was insane.
A trade was my best option for now. Holding back the searing pain in my arm, I searched through the comments.
'First, I need to find a registered user. Who should I...'
[System] SwordTasteMaster has requested a trade. Would you like to accept?
I was drenched in cold sweat, still trying to decide when a trade request suddenly appeared.
It was from the registered user who always gave bizarre advice, an industrious lunatic.
For a moment, I wondered why this person of all people, but pain surged through my right arm. I accepted in a panic.
[SwordTasteMaster]: You're the one with the injured arm, right?
[You]: Yes.
[SwordTasteMaster]: I'll give you a Potion.
[SwordTasteMaster]: Apply this, and you'll be okay.
[System] SwordTasteMaster has registered trade items.
[SwordTasteMaster]: You don't need to give me anything. Just accept it quickly.
An angel without wings was right here! I was touched for all of a second before immediately accepting the trade.
After closing the gallery, I looked at the floor. Once a trade was completed, the item was usually left there.
'...What is this?'
I blinked.
A golden liquid shimmered inside a small cylindrical glass bottle.
It definitely wasn't anything suspicious. At least, it didn't sparkle like starlight.
Before I could even wonder what it was, I picked up the bottle.
With one arm ruined, even opening a bottle was a chore.
Drip-
"Arrrgh...!"
I'd taken a deep breath before pouring it on, but it stung like fucking hell. Tears welled in my eyes.
Someone might say a grown man shouldn't scream over that, but fuck, it hurt so badly I could die.
It was about five times worse than putting Albothyl on a canker sore. And the area was much larger.
"Ughhh... Oh, oh?!"
Still, its effects were at least as good as Albothyl's, if not better.
Meaning it healed fast.
The holes in my arm closed up in an instant.
I couldn't wash away all the blood, but I could deal with that later.
"Wow..."
I moved my recovered right arm around. It was completely healed.
It even felt tougher than before. A miracle was the only way to describe it.
I pushed down my excitement and immediately logged back into the gallery.
[Post title] Is SwordTasteMister a god?
[Post] (Photo of my completely healed right arm)
[Post] (Photo of a glass bottle containing golden liquid)
[Post] Is SwordTasteMister a god? Is SwordTasteMister a god? Is SwordTasteMister a god? Is SwordTasteMister a god?
[Post] I would like to thank SwordTasteMister for giving me a new arm. But what is this yellow stuff?
└ Oh? Your arm's totally healed? Congrats, congrats.
└ I was going to give you something too. Too bad.
└ Don't talk shit lol.
└ What the hell did they give you for an arm full of holes to heal completely?
Exactly. I wanted to know too.
I looked at the golden liquid with about a third left. I'd saved it just in case.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: It's nothing special. It was a gift from my superior? I have lots at home.
└ [Wild Grylls]: So what's it called?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Elixir. Oh, and since there's a risk of infection, it's better to drink the rest.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yep!
Following SwordTasteMaster's advice, I drank the rest.
It fizzed like soda and had a strange but familiar flavor.
You know that orange-flavored medicine you drank whenever you got sick as a kid? It tasted like that.
└ Elixir? They gave you an Elixir?
└ Oh, fuck off. Why would they give you that?
└ An Elixir was the only answer here, yeah.
└ How rich are they? They got one as a gift from their superior?
The gallery's reaction was weird. Everyone was losing their minds.
I posted a question with a puzzled expression.
└ [Wild Grylls]: I'm dumb as bricks, but is an Elixir expensive?
└ Of course it's expensive;;
└ Even the lowest grade costs about a commoner's household expenses for a month.
└ [Wild Grylls]: I don't know how much that is.
└ They really are dumb as bricks.
└ Lololol.
I roughly understood that it was expensive. Elixirs weren't all insanely costly, apparently. It depended on the ingredients.
The better the ingredients, the stronger the golden color, but I couldn't tell.
One thing was certain, though.
I owed SwordTasteMaster my life.
I wanted to repay them somehow.
'Though I'm in no position to repay anyone when I need help myself...'
For now, I'd at least write something. I needed to show my gratitude.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Excuse me, but is there anything I can do for you?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Get stronger and marry me.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Wha...?
└ Look how flustered they are lol.
└ This asshole proposes to anyone with potential lol.
Ah. Right.
SwordTasteMaster wasn't exactly normal either. I suddenly felt deflated for no reason.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: I was joking. Please read my posts from the beginning. They'll help you.
└ I don't know about anything else, but this person's posts are genuinely useful. You should definitely read them too, bro.
└ For real. Top-tier stuff.
└ The Empire is crying lol.
"Are they really that good?"
Since I still didn't know how this world worked, it didn't quite sink in.
Still, I'd received a favor, so it was only right to do what they asked. Refusing even this would be rude.
Besides, the sword was the only weapon I had right now. If I wanted to use it well, I should read those posts.
└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Ah...! Things got resolved while I was asleep! What a relief!
└ The sucker has arrived!
└ Has the sucker come at last?
└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: I'll delete the post with the injury from earlier in one minute! It's too gruesome!
Once things had settled down a little, the Head Mod appeared. Everyone started teasing them for being a sucker.
I tilted my head, wondering why they were calling the Head Mod that, and another user quickly explained.
└ Grylls, please don't take advantage of the Head Mod.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Why? Did something happen?
└ They can't refuse a request. They agree to everything like a sucker.
└ Didn't they give away their entire fortune because of that?
└ The catch is, their entire fortune was ten gold lol.
└ Lololol.
"They really are a sucker."
They were way too nice. Now I understood.
Of course, that didn't mean I'd ever ask the Head Mod for anything.
Even if I did, it would be a fair trade. I had a conscience too.
'If I find something like medicinal herbs later, I should give them to SwordTasteMaster.'
It was time to clean up now. I dragged away the dog carcass, still leaking warm blood.
I was worried the smell of blood would attract other beasts, so I needed to block the entrance too.
'I'll stay here until the Heavenly Demon gives me the rest.'
I disposed of the corpse some distance away, then gathered nearby stones and blocked the cave entrance.
After finishing the cleanup, I opened my bundle of food. It was what I'd eaten before sleeping.
'No matter how I look at it, it resembles a rice ball.'
It was the right size, too. A rice ball through and through.
The taste wasn't.
I shoved the rice ball, about the size of a child's fist, into my mouth. Pulling every face imaginable, I forced myself to chew.
Had the Heavenly Demon really eaten this stuff and called it food? A sharp herbal scent stabbed at my nose.
And the taste? It was disgustingly bad and disgustingly bitter. There wasn't even a trace of sweetness.
'At least it's something.'
I'd have to ask the Heavenly Demon later what it was made from to taste so awful.
Strangely enough, it went down easily. It just tasted horrible.
I finished the whole thing and leaned against the wall. Too much had happened today.
'At least I know this isn't a dream.'
What had I done wrong for me to open my eyes in a place like this? And what was this gallery?
The sudden hit of reality made me want to cry, but I held it in. First, I should figure out what kind of world this was.
To do that, I'd need to log in to the gallery. It was the only thing I could trust right now.
[Post title] Insanely Awesome Nonhuman Lady Pic [0]
"..."
It was the conspicuous post sitting at the very top when I logged in. I flinched at the sight of it.
Then I instinctively looked around. I knew nobody was there, but still.
'Hm. It's at the very top, so...'
I justified it to myself and clicked the post.
"Arghhh!!!"
I suffered devastating internal injuries.
[Post title] You fucking lunatics
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] Fuck, where did you take a photo like that? It's gross as hell, fuckfuckfuck.
└ Welcome lololol.
└ Ah, another victim got hit today.
└ So? Isn't our dwarf lady pretty? Give us a rating.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Fuck, shut up.
└ Isn't this the registered user who posted that their arm was in serious trouble earlier?
└ Their arm healed, and they're already getting back to work lol.
└ Of course. Can't skip the daily routine lol.
└ Men are such pitiful creatures.
The gallery really was a nest of lunatics.
* * *
"Looks like he's okay."
Ash smiled as she watched Grylls, who was going fucking berserk(?) after getting hit by the photo.
The Elixir she'd given him was one of the gifts bestowed upon her by the Emperor. She couldn't even remember when she'd received it.
Besides, she had enough Elixirs to trip over them. If she ran out, she could just ask the Emperor for more.
'What kind of reaction will the Heavenly Demon have?'
More than anything else, she was curious about the Heavenly Demon's reaction.
The Head Mod had already deleted the injury photo Grylls had posted. The Heavenly Demon would be terribly confused.
Why was Grylls suddenly praising her? She would probably wonder what had happened.
'And a regular person? What a joke.'
Ash snorted. Grylls was too skilled at fighting to be called a regular person.
A real ordinary person wouldn't have been able to resist the Mad Dog at all. They would've simply died.
But Grylls had sacrificed one arm to counterattack. He showed promise.
'He's entertaining too.'
With some support, Grylls steadily grew stronger.
That didn't mean he accepted help every time, either. His efforts to repay every kindness stood out.
He was commendable, in a way. Ash focused on the gallery with her trademark toothy grin.
She wanted to see if Grylls needed anything or had more questions.
This was a new kind of fun.
[Post title] Guys. I'm screwed [0]
"He's here!"
What would he ask this time? Ash immediately clicked the post.
She didn't know what had him screwed this time, but checking came first.
[Post] Guys. I'm screwed
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] I need to take a shit, but I don't have toilet paper. I'm fucked.
"..."
He was no less of an idiot. Ash let out an incredulous laugh.
"Should I wipe with my pants? It's not like there's anyone else here. Dear God, please."
For Grylls, who had been dropped into the wilderness with nothing, it was an incredibly serious problem.
He couldn't take care of it inside the cave, and even if he did, cleaning up afterward would be a nightmare.
Now, he had to trust in collective wisdom. It was such an urgent matter that he couldn't even think straight.
└ Can't you wipe with leaves?
└ [Wild Grylls]: What if I get a rash from them;;
└ Then wipe with the monster you just killed. Seems like you could skin it with your sword.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Oh! Thanks, thanks.
└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: No! If you wipe with Mad Dog hide, germs could get inside you!
└ How does the moderator know that?
└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Huh...?
└ Lololololol.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Fuck, then what am I supposed to do?
Grylls had encountered a different kind of crisis. Just as he was about to sacrifice his pants...
└ [Passing Dwarf]: I have some completely torn underwear. Want it?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah, give it to me fast.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Just so you know, I'm a man.
└ [Wild Grylls]: So what? It's an emergency, fuckfuckfuck.
└ This guy is for real lol.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: He seems serious, so I just gave him toilet paper.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Oh, fuck. Dear God, thank you.
└ Lololol. What religion is that?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Anyone who helps someone in a crisis is a god, yeah.
└ It's fucking stupid, but he's right.
Thanks to the toilet paper from Passing Dwarf, the matter was finally settled.
It had been a sudden commotion, but seeing how desperate Grylls was, the gallery users realized one thing.
└ Does Grylls seriously have nothing? His life is wild.
└ At least he's different from those scammer bastards, yeah.
└ Poor guy lol.
At the very least, he wasn't a scammer.
