◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈

Chapter 7: Forest of Four Seasons (2)

──────

[Post title] Does anyone know who the highest god in this world is?

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] Title says it all.

└ Why?

└ [Wild Grylls]: So I can cuss the shit out of them.

└ LMAOOOOOO

└ LOL

└ Openly declaring blasphemy, damn.

└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Blasphemy is bad!

└ That’s why you got dropped into the Forest of Four Seasons lol.

└ You’re being punished lol.

└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Blasphemy is bad!

It felt like the hope I’d barely managed to hold onto had come crashing down. I crossed my arms and stared at the floor.

The compasses I’d received from registered users were laid out there. Their needles spun in circles as if they were broken.

They couldn’t all be broken. More likely, the problem was where I was.

‘Is this really the Forest of Four Seasons?’

I looked up and checked the Gallery. Maybe the rumors had spread, because it was nothing but posts about me.

Lots of people said this phenomenon would be impossible outside the Forest of Four Seasons, but just as many argued that if it really were, I shouldn’t be able to access the Gallery.

[Post title] Wasn’t it all staged by Wild Grylls?

[Post] Did this asshole break every compass on purpsose?

└ It’s “on purpose,” not “on purpsose.”

└ Then why have all their posts been so damn gripping?

└ Mad Dog, then a Guardian, then an Owlbear.

└ Look at that lineup lol.

└ And it was fucking huge too. No way it’s staged.

└ The New Moon Spirit Herb seems real too. Look at the post Heavenly Demon made.

└ At least they’re not a scammer. Just a little mentally unwell.

└ LOL.

I wished it were staged too. A frustrated sigh escaped me.

My mind was spinning like the needles on those compasses.

In other words, I was about to lose it. I had no idea what I was supposed to do now.

‘Still, there’s hope.’

It hadn’t been confirmed that this was the Forest of Four Seasons. The world was vast, and there were plenty of unexplored regions.

It could be one of those places. Everyone described the Forest of Four Seasons as a place beyond human reach.

As a civilized person who’d lived safely within the bounds of civilization, I needed to get out somehow.

Doing anything was better than sitting still and doing nothing.

[Post title] Tell me about the Forest of Four Seasons.

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] Title says it all.

└ Why do you want to know?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I’m trying to confirm whether it’s the real thing.

└ You can think of it as having spring, summer, fall, and winter weather all at once.

└ More accurately, it has every climate. I heard there’s even a desert.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Why the fuck would a forest have a desert? You said it was a forest.

└ How should we know?

└ For reference, the Forest of Four Seasons is the size of a small country.

└ [Wild Grylls]: That’s fucking useless information.

└ I said it was for reference lol.

What kind of bullshit forest was this? I should confirm it first.

Going outside was dangerous, but that didn’t matter now that the compasses were useless.

It seemed best to use the cave as a base and slowly expand my range.

‘I’ll need paper and a pen too.’

I planned to draw a rough map. Even if the compasses were worthless, it was better than having nothing.

I might get lost and fail to make it back. I needed to prepare for the worst.

‘Do everything I can.’

I’d heard that the most important thing in survival was the will to live.

More often than not, people gave up in despair, did nothing, and then really couldn’t do anything.

Danger was everywhere, but I had to accept the risk. I turned to look at the corner of the cave.

‘There’s nowhere safer than this cave right now...’

Since there was a good chance I’d be stuck in this forest for days, my plan was to find water before worrying about escaping.

You could survive three weeks without food, but you’d die if you went three days without water.

Even if I could get help from the Gallery, I planned to do whatever I could myself.

‘I might not get help when things are truly dangerous.’

I’d learned that when Mad Dog bit me. I’d gotten through that crisis safely thanks to SwordTasteMaster’s kindness.

There was no guarantee it wouldn’t happen again. If anything, it was highly likely.

If I couldn’t get help in a life-or-death situation, I’d lose my life.

‘That means I need to get closer to the registered users...’

I didn’t know what any of them did. I looked over the ones I’d gotten to know, at least a little.

Heavenly Demon was someone important, SwordTasteMaster was rich and skilled with a sword, and Passing Dwarf was a dwarf.

That was it for now. I had no idea what the registered users who’d given me compasses did.

‘Starlight Princess seems sick.’

I meant physically sick, not mentally sick. Not that kind of sick.

Seeing her wish for a complete recovery every day, she probably had some sort of chronic illness.

As for the rest... I couldn’t tell from their posts. They were all over the place, so it was hard to be certain.

[Post title] Butthole reveal

[Author] PrincessChaenggu

[Post] (Photo of an emblem bearing a deer pattern)

[Post] It’s my buttholeee.

└ LOL did Changu lose today?

└ [PrincessChaenggu]: Those fucking bitches conceded two goals in stoppage time, hee hee.

└ LMAOOOOOO

└ No wonder the mentally ill weirdos showed up.

Maybe not. I frowned at the incredibly explicit content.

PrincessChaenggu was definitely sports-obsessed. Out of all their posts, most were about sports.

[Post title] I want to cryyy. Why am I a Changu fan?

[Post title] Hee hee, these fucking assholes. They keep getting scored on like goddamn idiots.

[Post title] Just as I thought, Evers!! I knew I could trust youuu!

[Post title] This fucking sucks. That’s a team?

[Post title] Mid-Table Leor! Mid-Table Leor! Mid-Table Leor!

“...”

The scent of something very familiar drifted through this unfamiliar Gallery.

Most sports tended to cause mental illness. It was a very familiar feeling.

I’d also once been deeply into soccer and baseball, until stress-induced hair loss got me. I found enlightenment afterward and made a full recovery.

‘If I want to get close to this person...’

It’d be hard for now. Maybe if we were on Earth, but I didn’t even know what kinds of sports existed here.

That was enough looking into the registered users’ tendencies. I should explore the area before the sun set.

Holding Heavenly Demon’s Sword, I put a few Fasting Pills into my mouth. The moment I bit down, bitterness filled my mouth.

I quickly took a sip of water to wash away the taste. I had no idea how long I’d have to keep eating these.

‘Good. I’m ready.’

Before leaving the cave, I made a post.

I also didn’t forget to put a handful of Fasting Pills in my pants pocket, just in case.

[Post title] Ready to go

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo showing the cave entrance)

[Post] I’m going to look around and see if this is the Forest of Four Seasons.

└ Isn’t that too dangerous?

└ You ran into an Owlbear earlier;;

└ Since the compasses are acting weird, exploring does make sense.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: Be careful.

└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Hang in there.

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Wait a bit. I was going to give you a used shield.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Later. If anything gets dangerous, I’ll run immediately anyway.

└ The next day, Grylls never posted again...

└ T_T

└ [Wild Grylls]: Shut it.

Everyone seemed to be cheering for me. Of course, most of them were registered users. The rest were closer to not giving a damn.

Some comments even went way over the line, but they were deleted before long.

└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Severe profanity and insults toward someone trying their best will result in a ban!

└ [Wild Grylls]: Thanks, thanks;;

I wasn’t sure this counted as trying my best. I’d only ended up here by accident.

Anyway, after making what could be my final post on the Gallery, I stepped out of the cave while breathing heavily.

The familiar scenery welcomed me outside. It was a forest with warm weather.

‘At least the weather is warm.’

If it had been cold, the difficulty would’ve gone up even more. I looked around and started walking.

I headed in the opposite direction from where the Owlbear had been happily eating Mad Dog’s corpse.

I didn’t forget to mark the way with my sword so I wouldn’t get lost.

‘Focus on the sounds.’

The chirping of insects. Bushes rustling in the wind. The distant roars of animals.

I strained my ears so I wouldn’t miss a thing. My chest pounded with tension.

This was an environment where one careless moment could cost me my life. The only thing I could trust was this sword.

Tzzzzzt-

With my hearing sharpened by tension, I caught an ominous sound. It came from directly above.

I immediately jerked my head upward. I didn’t have time to raise it slowly.

“Shaaaaaa!!”

A gigantic snake lunged at me with its jaws spread wide. Its sharply protruding fangs looked threatening.

Without even time to scream, I desperately jerked my head aside. The snake’s jaws barely grazed past me.

Without hesitation, I swung my sword down at its body.

Thud!

“What...?”

Something I hadn’t expected happened. This was Heavenly Demon’s Sword, the one that had cleanly sliced Mad Dog in two.

Yet the blade only went in halfway before getting stuck. The snake’s scales were far harder than I’d expected.

“Kyaaaaa!!”

The venomous snake thrashed in pain. At the same time, it opened its enormous jaws and came at me.

It was as huge as an anaconda. If it bit me, I was done for.

Just as I tried to move my right hand, I had no choice but to freeze.

Squeeze!

“Ghk?!”

The snake had coiled its body around my right arm. Since when?

My panic only lasted a moment. Right before it bit me, I grabbed the snake by the neck.

Ordinary scales were slick and disgusting, but this snake was different. It felt like touching a hard steel plate.

Squeeze!!

“Argh!”

The pressure on my right arm intensified. My left hand wasn’t free either.

The moment I let go with my left hand, the snake would obviously bite me. Keeping things as they were was my best option.

‘What do I do... Ah!’

Something caught my eye amid the chaos. The snake’s half-severed body.

It was between the part wrapped around my right arm and its head. I immediately brought both arms down in a motion like jumping rope.

The half-severed section dropped beneath my feet. Now it was time to use my strength.

Crunch!

“Graaah!”

“Shaaaaa!!”

I stepped on the middle of the snake’s body and pulled at the half-severed section as if I intended to rip it apart completely.

The snake thrashed in pain, shaking its head in every direction. Venom sprayed dangerously from its fangs.

My right arm wasn’t faring any better. The snake squeezed even harder, as if it meant to crush my bones completely.

It was a game of chicken. Either it died, or I did, and I’d run into an unexpected obstacle.

‘Fuck. Why are these scales so damn tough?!’

This was a snake that even Heavenly Demon’s Sword hadn’t cut easily. Of course it was tough.

Did I plan to give up because of that? Absolutely not.

If I wanted to live, I had to tear this thing in half and kill it.

Rrrip! Rip!

The result of our contest of strength gradually appeared. Its body began to tear apart.

The split started from where my sword had been embedded. I pulled with every ounce of strength I had.

Using my feet as well as my hands let me exert even more force.

Rrrip! Rrrrrip!!

The long, grueling struggle was over. The snake’s body tore in half.

I felt the body coiled around my arm rapidly lose strength now that it no longer received commands from the head. I immediately shook my right arm.

The section of snake wrapped around my arm fell away, and I drove the sword straight in.

Stab!

Heavenly Demon’s Sword pierced the snake’s head. Even with a sword stuck in its head, the snake continued to writhe.

I panted and collapsed to the ground. I didn’t pull the sword out, just in case.

I’d heard that snakes were weird animals that could move even when only their heads remained.

Even now, though the sword had pierced its head and gone deep into the ground, its body still twitched. It had a truly tenacious life.

Throb! Throb!

“Ugh...”

I looked at my throbbing right arm. Clear coil marks had been left on it.

It wasn’t just marks. There were bruises too. Considering my bones had nearly been crushed, it was a relatively minor injury.

‘What the hell are these scales made of to be this tough?’

Even Heavenly Demon’s Sword had barely pierced them. I uploaded photos to the Gallery.

I planned to rest for about thirty seconds before moving again. I’d used up too much strength.

[Post title] Even the snakes are fucking huge now.

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo of the snake’s head)

[Post] (Photo of the snake’s body separated from its head)

[Post] I seriously almost died. I was shocked the sword didn’t cut it in one go;;

└ Whoa, that’s fucking gross;;; Is that a venomous snake?

└ [Wild Grylls]: Yeah. It tried to kill me with its fangs at first, then wrapped around my right arm. I thought my bones were breaking.

└ It cut Mad Dog in half, but a snake didn’t get cut in one go? How did you kill it?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I tore it apart where the sword had cut it. It was fucking tough.

└ Holy shit.

└ That looks like a Steel-Scale Snake.

└ Wouldn’t that be crazy expensive if it’s real?

└ Yeah. The venom and scales should be valuable.

So this thing was called a Steel-Scale Snake. It lived up to its name.

I looked at the post, where the comments were going crazy again, then simply closed it. There was no point worrying about it.

Given its size, taking it back to the cave would be awkward. It would be better to put it directly on the Auction House.

‘Especially after what happened with Mad Dog.’

Without hesitation, I entered the Auction House. All kinds of items were listed there.

Every now and then, there were strange things like an elf’s panties or socks that hadn’t been washed in days.

The world was vast, and there was no shortage of idiots and perverts. I let out a hollow laugh.

Unlike direct trades, anyone could list items on the Auction House, which led to this sort of thing.

‘The fee... Eek. It’s forty percent?’

So this was why people said the fees were murderous. Still, its ability to bypass normal distribution channels made it popular.

I placed my hand on the body instead of the head and registered it on the Auction House.

The listing name was “Snake I Just Caught,” and the minimum bid was five gold.

Disposing of the corpse had been a problem, so I’d profit as long as it sold.

‘At least the listing fee isn’t much.’

After registering a username, the Gallery had given me a small amount of money too.

That meant I didn’t have to worry about lacking the listing fee. It was lucky, if nothing else.

[System] P.S. Fees may vary depending on weight.

Didn’t matter. I finished the listing and got to my feet.

The snake’s body disappeared when I listed it on the Auction House, leaving only the head.

The head was still alive and moving, so I couldn’t list that. Covering it with dirt was the best option.

‘It’s tough from the very start.’

What a miserable life. Why was I suffering this much?

Rubbing my still-throbbing arm, I started walking again. I prayed that nothing else would happen.

Trickle, trickle-

Before long, a sound that snapped me back to attention reached my ears. Flowing water.

Water was an extremely important means of survival, if nothing else. I hurried forward.

I could solve my drinking-water problem, and if I followed the water downstream, I might even get out of the forest.

At least, that was what I thought.

“...What is this?”

If only there hadn’t been a desert on the other side of the stream. I felt less shocked than dumbfounded.

Even after rubbing my eyes and looking again, it was a desert. A desert with striking, slightly reddish sand.

I was clearly in a forest, so why was there a desert beyond the stream?

It felt as if common sense had been completely shattered. After standing there blankly for a while, I accessed the Gallery.

[Post title] I’ll show you something amazing.

[Author] Wild Grylls

[Post] (Photo showing the stream and forest)

[Post] There’s forest and a river here!

[Post] (Photo showing the vast desert beyond the stream)

[Post] Across the river is a desert! Think it’s staged?

[Post] (Video alternating between the forest, stream, and desert)

[Post] Holy fuck! Where the hell am I?

[Post] Aren’t. You. Really. Curious?

└ Wow. So. Fascinating.

└ ??? It really was the Forest of Four Seasons?

└ How are you even getting on the Gallery?

└ LOL this is seriously spectacular.

└ So it really was real lol.

└ [Heavenly Demon]: What a pretty place.

└ [Wild Grylls]: Ma’am?

└ I don’t think Heavenly Demon understands what any of this means lol.

└ Why does she sound like such a boomer lol?

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Are you perhaps hallucinating?

└ [Wild Grylls]: I sobered up a long time ago;;

└ [Passing Dwarf]: Start drinking again. Then you’ll sober up.

└ LMAOOOOOO

└ Treat poison with poison, damn.

The comments were completely useless. I sighed in frustration.

“Ha...”

There was only one word that could describe how I felt right then.

“Fuck.”
