◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 78: Rain (1)
──────
I'd briefly forgotten I was in a forest.
What was a forest? A place full of dense trees, grass, and animals.
A treasure trove of biodiversity, where all kinds of plants and animals lived in balance.
Of course it was natural for it to rain in a place like that.
The problem was that sometimes it rained far more than expected.
Shhhhhhh!
The torrential downpour outside the cave right now was exactly that.
I'd spent all through the early morning doing Qi Circulation and Breath Regulation, slept for a little while, then woke up.
In that short time, rain had begun pouring down as if a hole had opened in the sky.
"Wait, wait, wait, wait!"
I was stunned to see rain for the first time in a while, but only for a moment. Then I realized I was in deep shit.
First, there was the smoked food. Then the charcoal.
And finally, the laundry I'd hung out to dry.
I'd worked hard to gather that charcoal. I couldn't lose all of it to one rainstorm.
The smoked food was the same. It'd be a disaster if the rain washed away all the salt.
"Ugh."
I somehow brought in the container of charcoal, the smoked food, and the laundry.
It hadn't been raining long, so none of it was soaked too badly.
'I guess breakfast will have to be smoked food.'
I could eat fish inside the cave, but cleaning up afterward would be a pain.
Outdoor activity was impossible right now anyway. Even after the rain stopped, it would be hard to do anything.
The ground would definitely turn into a muddy mess, and the river would swell.
The swelling river was the biggest problem. I might have to change my plans.
[Post title] Forced Seclusion Training Begins
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] (Video of rain falling outside the cave)
[Post] It was raining like fucking crazy when I woke up this morning, so forced Seclusion Training begins.
[Post] Does anyone know how to do Seclusion Training? I just heard the term somewhere, so I don't really know.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: Seclusion Training... A familiar term.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Do you have any useful tips?
└ [Heavenly Demon]: You cut off all means of contact, even the gallery, and focus solely on martial arts.
└ [Wild Grylls]: That won't be easy. How long did you do that for, Heavenly Demon?
└ [Heavenly Demon]: One month. I fell into Qi Deviation midway through and found myself in a crisis, but I survived thanks to your kindness.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Cutting off the gallery sounds kind of hard though;;
└ [Heavenly Demon]: There is nothing you cannot do if you focus.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Seclusion Training isn't bad. The problem is that, as Heavenly Demon said, you have to cut off the gallery.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Have you ever done it, SwordTasteMaster?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: No? Other than when I was a Sword User, I've never hit a wall in my realm or anything. I just broke through everything with ease.
└ [Wild Grylls]: ;;;
└ [Heavenly Demon]: What an amusing thing to say. Then what realm are you at now?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: It's high, but I don't really see a need to break through to the next stage.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: Tsk, tsk. Arrogant fool. You will regret that someday.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: I don't think there's anything to regret. There's no one stronger than me lol
└ [Heavenly Demon]: You know neither how high the heavens are nor how frightening nature can be. Even this lady, though she stands in the heavens, bows before nature.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: What a martial arts fossil thing to say. I have no idea what you're talking about.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: It means you will never marry.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Did you just fucking say that?
└ [Wild Grylls]: You two, please;;
└ She really drove the facts right through them lol
└ That verbal knockout came from years of experience;;
└ So is Heavenly Demon married?
└ [Heavenly Demon]: I have not taken a partner, nor do I intend to.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: How old are you anyway?
└ [Heavenly Demon]: I reached the flowering age last year.
└ What the hell is the flowering age?
└ Coming of age means twenty for men, flowering age means twenty for women.
└ Bullshit lol With that way of speaking, she's twenty? lol
└ She's just saying it to mess with SwordTasteMaster lol
└ At that age, she's in the Mystical Realm? Give me a break. Even geniuses only reach the Transformation Realm in their mid-thirties.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: Because this lady possesses talent bestowed by the heavens.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: It's not impossible. I became a Swordmaster in my early twenties too.
└ Both of you need to stop talking shit;;
The comments suddenly became a mess. SwordTasteMaster must have gotten irritated too, judging by how they started shouting in the replies.
Things were going to get weird at this rate. I needed to stop them quickly.
└ [Wild Grylls]: That's enough. Anyway, you're saying short Seclusion Training is meaningless?
└ [Heavenly Demon]: It only becomes meaningful as Seclusion Training after at least two weeks. Before that, let me ask you one thing.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Go ahead.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: Even if you entered Seclusion Training, are you confident you would not log into the gallery?
I thought about that for a little while.
About three seconds.
└ [Wild Grylls]: No.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: That was quick.
└ lol
└ Of course lol You can't resist the gallery lol
└ Not Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage, just three seconds of consideration lol
└ The real madman is the guy who does Seclusion Training while still using the gallery lol
Rather than cut off the gallery to train, I'd just train normally.
I was already starting to miss being around people, and now I was supposed to cut off the gallery too?
That was like taking a ventilator away from a critical patient.
From what I could tell, Seclusion Training was something you did only when you had plenty of time and resources.
I might have had time, but I definitely didn't have the resources, so it was better not to do it.
'Who knows when the rain will stop, either.'
The rain kept falling endlessly.
Judging by how heavily it was raining, it didn't seem likely to stop soon.
I might have to lose the entire morning.
"Wonmo, eat this today."
"Kyuu!"
Wonmo's meal was monster meat I'd bought from the Auction House.
Maybe because he ate anything, he wolfed it down happily.
I had smoked food for breakfast too. Fast Sloth's staple food was Fasting Pills.
I stared blankly outside the cave while eating. It gave me a strange feeling.
'I liked rainy days in the army.'
Indoor roll calls and indoor work details.
Even when there was training, most of the time we just watched videos.
Though every once in a while, we'd wear ponchos and train outside.
It felt like complete shit back then. I even caught a cold.
At least the battalion commander was generous and gave me a one-day leave pass.
I was so happy when I got that leave. They really were a good person.
'I wonder if armies here aren't much different?'
This was a world where people fought with swords and magic instead of guns and shells.
A system where military strength rose and fell depending on individual power.
I wasn't curious about each nation's military strength. I wanted to know what life was like there.
'There must be soldiers in the gallery too, right?'
I had nothing to do until the rain stopped. After finishing my Inner Energy Cultivation Method session, I logged into the gallery.
[Post title] There are soldiers here too, right?
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] What do soldiers do when it rains? Just indoor roll call and nothing else?
└ Training indoors is normal, but what do you mean by work details? Why would soldiers do work details?
└ [Wild Grylls]: You don't even clear snow?
└ Oh. Cleaning up trash that falls from the sky? We do that. Clearing leaves out of drainage ditches and stuff.
└ Normally, people are called in for that, but if it's bad enough, soldiers get sent too.
└ But why are you asking about soldiers?
└ [Wild Grylls]: It rained, so I thought about the army since I had nothing to do.
└ ??? You were a soldier?
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: No wonder you seemed unusual. What were you affiliated with?
└ [Wild Grylls]: The Republic of Korea.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: I've never heard that name. Is it some remote knight order?
└ [Wild Grylls]: It's my country's name. And I wasn't a knight. I enlisted, then got discharged.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: You're saying strange things again. Still, I'll believe you.
└ [Wild Grylls]: It's true.
└ Grylls. Then tell us your shittiest experience in the army.
└ [Wild Grylls]: An incident broke out the day before I was supposed to go on leave, so it got canceled immediately.
└ Fair.
└ Lmao
└ That would piss anyone off lol
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: But why did you enlist? Don't tell me you were in the middle of a war?
└ [Wild Grylls]: No. There was an armistice. It was a divided country.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: Oh dear;; Were you forcibly conscripted?
└ No, fuck, wait. Didn't you say you were an orphan? Why would they conscript you then?
└ That is strange. Why would an army conscript an orphan...?
└ Did you come here in the middle of a war? It's serious if they conscript orphans.
What kind of misunderstanding were these people having?
The army in my country was pretty damn insane, but I enlisted voluntarily.
Normally, I would've been exempt, but the military was so short on people back then that they let me enlist anyway.
I wasn't going to college either, and I was drifting around at the time, so I didn't mind.
└ [Wild Grylls]: I just enlisted for active duty. Looking back, I should've made the military my career.
└ [DontAbandonTheHero]: Um... Stay strong!
└ [Wild Grylls]: All of a sudden?;;
└ How miserable is their life if even the Head Mod says that?
└ No parents. Joins the army. And now they're in the Forest of Four Seasons too.
└ That's a whole collection of hardcore life experiences lol
└ If you think about it, doesn't every one of those involve risking your life?
More people suddenly started pitying me.
I had no idea what misunderstanding they were having, but whatever.
'Looks like people everywhere are all the same.'
It seemed hating the military was universal.
After chatting for a while, I looked outside the cave.
The rain seemed to have weakened a little, but it was still pouring down.
'It's getting cold.'
Maybe because of the rain, the weather had gone beyond cool and turned chilly.
I brought over some suitable firewood and lit a campfire.
Warmth spread through me, and I began to feel drowsy.
Wonmo and Fast Sloth gradually moved closer to the campfire to enjoy the warmth too.
'I should train until the rain stops.'
It wasn't good to stay still like this. I got up.
Training was necessary if I wanted to use my sword and shield more easily.
I gripped Heavenly Demon’s Sword and the adamant-whatever shield, both of which I'd oiled.
Pitter-patter-patter!
Something small entered my cave.
At first, I thought it was a rat, but it wasn't. Its tail was too thick.
"Kkiwoong."
"..."
It was a raccoon dog. Some raccoon dog had walked into the cave on two legs.
After walking in, it held its paws out toward the campfire.
It was so absurd that Wonmo, Fast Sloth, and I could only stare at it blankly.
"..."
"...Wonmo. No."
I quietly stopped Wonmo. He had started creeping toward it.
The curious look on his face made it seem like he was about to hunt it at any moment.
Other animals were one thing, but I needed to be careful with raccoon dogs.
If I caught rabies by accident, I was done for.
I had no idea whether Elixir could cure disease too, but still.
'Fast Sloth will stop him if it comes to that.'
It'd be better for me to just focus on training.
If Wonmo showed signs of trying to hunt it, I'd stop him right away.
Still, what gave that raccoon dog the nerve to enter my cave?
It had even seen us, yet it was warming itself by the campfire with a relaxed expression.
'How long is it going to stay?'
I kept glancing at the raccoon dog as I focused on my training.
I was learning by carefully reading the post SwordTasteMaster had uploaded. It was easy, yet difficult.
The explanations were easy to understand, but there were clear limits to a written medium.
It'd be different if I had a teacher beside me, but that wasn't possible either.
'It's better than nothing.'
SwordTasteMaster's post was very highly rated.
Just following it would probably have a huge effect.
Most of all, since I'd chosen the Sword-and-Shield Warrior route, I only needed to focus on the basics.
'The advanced section... No. Let's just look at the basics.'
I practiced swordsmanship and shield techniques at the same time through visualization training.
At the same time, I accelerated the mana within my body. My breathing gradually grew heavier.
'So that I could unconsciously absorb mana with each breath.'
I wanted to gain mana through breathing. That was the realm I wanted to reach.
Then, as long as I was alive, I could use mana endlessly.
It was only a theory, but the Forest of Four Seasons' unusually abundant mana would make it possible.
"Hooah."
Even inside the cave, which was beyond cool and downright cold, sweat poured down my body.
I wiped off the sweat with my clothes and looked toward the campfire.
"Hm? Where did it go?"
It wasn't near the fire. I turned my head, wondering if it had gone somewhere else.
Then I saw something very interesting.
"Kkihihing."
"..."
A Fasting Pill caught between Fast Sloth's claws.
The raccoon dog snatched that Fasting Pill, then ran away with a gleeful little laugh.
Fast Sloth had been robbed right under its nose.
Tap, tap, tap!
The raccoon dog fled outside faster than anyone.
The rain had stopped at some point, making it the perfect time to escape.
If this continued, I'd lose a Fasting Pill for no reason, but...
Swish!
Who was Fast Sloth? The one who took food seriously.
Fast Sloth closed in right behind the raccoon dog as if it had teleported.
Stab!
With claws that I'd personally maintained yesterday, it pierced through the raccoon dog's back.
"Kweeeek!"
"..."
Who told it to steal someone else's food? I scoffed inwardly.
It should've been grateful enough that I let it warm itself by the campfire. I never expected it to start stealing too.
Slash, slash, slash!
Fast Sloth seemed pretty angry.
Piercing it with its claws wasn't enough, so it shredded the raccoon dog to pieces.
The result was a raccoon dog torn apart into chunks, reduced to something worse than rags.
The funny thing was that the Fasting Pill was completely fine even in that situation.
"Nom, nom."
Wonmo happily ate what remained of the raccoon dog.
It was nature in the raw. I shook my head and muttered.
"It brought this on itself."

The Korean swaps syllables in samgochoryeo, “Three Visits to the Thatched Cottage,” to make samchogoryeo, “three seconds of consideration.”
