◈ Got a Gallery in the Wild ◈
Chapter 79: Rain (2)
──────
Fast Sloth dealt with Raccoon Man, no, a raccoon dog, that had tried to steal and eat my Fasting Pill.
Normally, Raccoon Man would be the one doing the dealing with. A sloth handling a raccoon dog instead was bizarre.
“Here, Wonmo. Drink this too.”
“Kyuu?”
“The second you get rabies, your owner’s fucked.”
Wonmo ate the raccoon dog that Fast Sloth had cut into bite-sized pieces.
I gently opened Wonmo’s beak and poured in the Elixir.
It was the Animal Elixir Starlight Princess had given me before.
Wonmo struggled at first, but after taking one drop, he drank it without fuss.
He even started getting greedy for more, so I barely managed to stop him.
‘Elixirs are supposed to taste bitter... Is this one sweet?’
Elixirs were medicine, so they were normally bitter.
The Animal Elixir apparently tasted different. Wonmo was going crazy for it.
After disposing of the raccoon dog corpse I had not cleaned up yet, I looked outside.
The rain had nearly stopped, so it looked like I could start moving around again.
‘First, I should check the river.’
It had rained, so the river must have risen a lot.
Even if it had not, I only planned to check it and pull the Fish Trap out right away.
River water did not rise gradually. It rushed in like a tsunami.
‘The ground’s not too bad considering it rained all morning, either.’
Only the area around my cave, especially where I had worked, had turned muddy. Everywhere else was fine.
Still, some repairs seemed necessary. Specifically, the pit I had dug beneath the barricade.
The pit had done a great job acting as a drain, but it needed tidying up.
‘It’ll take a while for all this to dry...’
I needed to redirect the water somewhere else.
Standing water would stink badly and attract bugs.
A drainage channel was necessary to prevent that, so I immediately got to work.
Checking the river could wait. I had to clean up around the cave first.
Thwack! Thwack!
I diligently dug out and cleared the drainage channel.
The end of it led behind the cave, toward the thick trees.
If the water collected there, the tree roots would soak it up on their own.
‘For now, I’ll block it off with dirt so the water doesn’t flow through.’
Letting the water run through it now would obviously become a hassle.
I made a temporary dirt wall and continued digging.
Thwack!
While digging, I came across something unexpected.
The most notable was an earthworm.
It was almost as huge as the giant gummy worms I used to eat in elementary school.
“Aaaaagh!!!”
I was so startled that I toppled backward.
Who knew an earthworm buried in the dirt, greeting me with a little hello, could be so terrifying?
I had barely screamed since coming here, but one earthworm managed to make me scream.
“Kyuu?”
Wonmo came rushing over after hearing my scream. He looked like he was asking what happened.
I calmed myself down and stroked Wonmo’s head. That seemed to settle my racing heart.
Considering how hard it was pounding, I was definitely alive.
“Nom nom nom.”
Wonmo happily ate the earthworm that had greeted me.
Earthworms were high in protein, so I did not stop him.
“Phew...”
Once I had calmed down a little, I let out a deep sigh.
That earthworm might become a major trauma for me.
What if I could not even dig properly anymore?
The thought lasted only a moment. I steadily continued the work I had left unfinished.
With Wonmo standing guard beside me like a bodyguard while I dug, I felt incredibly reassured.
“This should do it.”
The drainage work was finished. I no longer had to worry about puddles.
All that remained was checking the river. I grabbed some basic gear and headed there.
Wonmo was awake, so I brought Fast Sloth along too.
Then...
Roooooar!!
“...Fuck.”
I could only mutter a curse at the sight of the massively swollen river.
It had not simply risen. It looked like a tsunami was tearing through it.
The current, already fast before, had become much faster, and the water level had visibly risen.
But the bigger problem was the Fish Trap I had installed.
The rocks that had held it in place could not withstand the current and had all been swept away.
Naturally, the Fish Trap secured between those rocks had been swept away too.
All the work I had put in until now had turned into nothing because of the rain.
No, fuck, my Fish Trap!!!
[Author] Wild Grylls
[Post] (Video of a rapidly flowing river)
[Post] This goddamn rain swept away all my means of getting food.
[Post] It’s not going to be like this every time it rains, right? I’d be really sad if it is.
└ [Heavenly Demon]: The current is strong. It would be best not to go near it.
└ [SwordTasteMaster]: It looks terrifying just watching it. You’re not hurt, are you?
└ [Wild Grylls]: I’m fine, aside from my broken heart.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: The Fish Trap I gave you wasn’t that weak;; What the hell swept everything away?
└ [Wild Grylls]: The Fish Trap wasn’t the problem. All the rocks securing it collapsed.
└ [Passing Dwarf]: So it was just a natural disaster. I’ll give you another Fish Trap later, so don’t worry.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Thx thx;; Want some fish?
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Weren’t you giving me that every time we traded anyway?
└ [Wild Grylls]: What the hell;;
└ [Passing Dwarf]: Mad?
└ [Wild Grylls]: Of course not. What color would you like this time?
└ Isn’t this basically slavery?
└ This is beyond slavery.
└ More like a financial backer worse than the master lol
└ Grylls, are you planning to swim in there? At least try surfing.
└ It looks fun.
└ [Wild Grylls]: Come over and do it yourselves, assholes.
Most people seemed saddened that my Fish Trap had washed away.
My only food supply was gone, so I was frustrated too.
If this happened every time it rained, I would have a lot more work to do.
I was letting out a worried sigh when I heard something.
“Grrrwooo! Grrwooo!”
“...Huh?”
A strange sound came from the river.
When I turned my head, I saw a pitch-black bear flailing around in the river.
It seemed to have been caught off guard while near the river.
‘Poor thing.’
I felt a little sorry for it. Judging by its size, it seemed like a fairly large one.
Even if it had experience, it probably had not expected the river to swell so quickly.
‘...Wait, a bear?’
I looked upstream. The bear had clearly drifted down from above.
That meant bears and all kinds of other animals lived upstream.
How dangerous were the animals farther up? I was already worried.
‘At least it’s a normal size, so it should be fin...’
Boom! Boom! Boom!
“Grrrrwooooo!”
The instant I had that thought, a bear the size of a house rushed past me.
It was as huge as the Owlbear I had seen before.
The one being swept away must have been its cub, and the one that had just passed me was probably its mother.
If I went upstream, I might not only encounter that mother bear, but have to fight it.
‘Better to die downstream.’
There were whales and sharks downstream, so who knew what would happen to it.
Still, I had learned a few things because of it.
There was something upstream beyond anything I had imagined.
Even around here, a giant chicken had already claimed territory.
‘All kinds of things happen when it rains.’
A random raccoon dog came into my cave. My Fish Trap got swept away. I saw a giant bear.
I pulled myself together and returned home. I planned to have the fish I caught yesterday for lunch.
‘The vote should be ending soon, right?’
The trade-cooldown vote held yesterday was almost over.
Maybe because it came to mind, I decided to wait until the vote ended before eating lunch.
If the twenty-four-hour trade cooldown was lifted, I planned to give the others some fish.
It was my lunch, but giving them a little was fine. One fish was enough to fill me up anyway.
‘Please let it turn out well.’
The Head Mod was stubborn, old-fashioned, and a stickler for rules.
There was some flexibility, but they seemed like the type to avoid breaking the rules whenever possible.
‘That might be better for this gallery.’
I had heard bits and pieces about the previous Head Mods.
Every one of them had abused the gallery and caused all kinds of trouble.
The worst one had cleverly abused the trade system and ruined an entire territory.
Someone had even used location tracking to stalk people, so I could imagine just how capable the system was.
‘What would’ve happened to me if the Head Mod had been a complete mess?’
They might have imposed trade restrictions so I would die, or permanently banned me outright.
I’d heard the Head Mod could not be replaced except under certain conditions, so I was lucky.
I hoped this Head Mod stayed around for a long time. That would make survival easier for me.
‘If the trade restriction is lifted, I should give the Head Mod some fish too.’
They seemed like they were living a pitiful life, so it would not hurt.
They occasionally mentioned being chased, but with that personality, I had no idea whether they had committed a crime.
Well, there were all kinds of people in the world. I should let it go.
I was repaying their kindness, not rewarding them because of who they were.
‘Other than lifting the trade restriction, I have nothing else to ask for.’
There was one-on-one chat, at least, but I could replace that with private posts.
It was a little frustrating, but even this was something I should be grateful for right now.
“Wonmo, eat.”
“Kyuu!”
I fed Wonmo and waited for the vote to end.
There was no point running the Inner Energy Cultivation Method when it would not be efficient, so I browsed the gallery instead.
Since the vote had been posted yesterday, I worried it might have been buried.
‘It’s in the notices?’
That worry was unnecessary. It was posted right at the top of the notice board.
Since it involved breaking a gallery rule, it seemed they had turned it into a notice.
‘Only registered users get to vote... I wonder how many there are?’
Most of the gallery was Anonymous Users, but there were quite a few registered users too.
Anyone who met the requirements could access the gallery.
I had no idea what the population of all these worlds was, but there had to be a lot of them proportionally.
‘Just look at how fast new posts come in.’
Every time I refreshed, an entire page was pushed back.
Sometimes two or three pages.
‘Who the hell made this gallery?’
I wondered about it sometimes. I’d heard the Gallery was built on magic.
But I knew nothing about magic, and I had gained the gallery as soon as I arrived here.
That meant there had to be another method.
[Post title] Two Idiots
[Post] (Video of two human men acting like idiots)
[Post] These fucking idiots are my friends? LOL
└ lolololol
└ lololololol
└ lololololol
└ What is this lololol
“Pffft.”
It really was perfect for relieving stress.
I snickered at funny videos, then checked the notice board.
The vote would end in about three minutes. I had been fine until now, but as the deadline approached, my hands started sweating for no reason.
[Heavenly Demon]: Young sir, are you there?
As I waited quietly, Heavenly Demon sent me a message.
Was she waiting for the vote too? I answered right away.
[You]: Yes. I’m waiting for the vote results now.
[Heavenly Demon]: It seems we feel the same.
[Heavenly Demon]: Do not worry too much. I personally cast a vote in favor.
[You]: Thank you.
[You]: If it turns out well, would you like some fish?
[Heavenly Demon]: Did you not say your Fish Trap was swept away?
[You]: I have one fish left from yesterday.
[You]: I can give you a piece.
[Heavenly Demon]: I am fine.
[Heavenly Demon]: I do not wish to squeeze a flea dry.
[You]: This flea’s got plenty of blood.
[Heavenly Demon]: A flea is still a flea.
[You]: I’m not giving you all of it. I just want you to taste it.
I bickered with Heavenly Demon, and before I knew it, the vote was over.
The moment voting ended, I opened the post with great expectations.
[Post title] Vote to Remove Wild Grylls’s Twenty-Four-Hour Trade Restriction!
[Author] DontAbandonTheHero
[Post] Registered user Wild Grylls is struggling to survive in the Forest of Four Seasons!
[Post] Normally, we should not grant this kind of special treatment! But Wild Grylls has verified their situation and is highly trustworthy, so we will hold a vote!
[Post] Wild Grylls has also said that this special treatment will be withdrawn as soon as they escape the Forest of Four Seasons, so please keep that in mind!
[Post] 1. In Favor: 95%
[Post] 2. Opposed: 5%
“Yes!!”
I clenched my fist and cheered. The margin was overwhelming.
I wondered who made up the five percent against it, but voters’ usernames were not revealed.
Still, having such an overwhelming number of votes in favor was enough.
[Heavenly Demon]: Congratulations.
[Heavenly Demon]: Your wish has come true.
[You]: Your vote was a great help, Heavenly Demon.
[You]: Thank you!
[Heavenly Demon]: You know how to be grateful even for small things.
[Heavenly Demon]: I find myself liking you more and more.
[You]: Every little bit adds up, you know?
[You]: Anyway, once the restriction is lifted, I’ll give you a piece of fish like I said!
Now all I had to do was quietly wait for the Head Mod.
I worried something might happen in the meantime.
[System] DontAbandonTheHero has requested a one-on-one chat! Would you like to accept?
As if to prove that worry unnecessary, I received a one-on-one chat request from the Head Mod.
I happily accepted right away.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Hello!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: You’re Wild Grylls, right?
[You]: ! That’s right.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: You received an overwhelming number of votes in favor!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: As promised, I’ll lift your trade restriction!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: But if I see any signs of abuse, I’ll reinstate it immediately, so please be careful!
[You]: Of course.
[You]: I’ll only focus on surviving.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Mm! Good!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: I hope you survive safely!
[You]: Before that, Head Mod. I’d like to give you a gift. Can we trade?
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Huh! What kind of gift?!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: A bribe?
[You]: DontAbandonTheHero
[Chat participant] Nooo!!
[You]: Just kidding. I’ll give you one Inner Core as thanks and to ask for your continued support.
[You]: You’re making this accommodation for me, after all.
The way I put it, it was practically a bribe. Still, I did not think the Head Mod would be swayed by something like that.
Like I said before, the Head Mod was stubborn and a stickler for rules.
It was simply my goodwill. I did not have anything else I could give them right now.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Isn’t that a bribe?!
[You]: It’s a gift full of ‘goodwill.’
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Why does it look like you emphasized goodwill?!
[You]: You’re imagining it.
[You]: Still, please accept one.
[You]: I heard you’re not exactly living well.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Umm...! All right, then!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: You can register your trade item right here!
[You]: Head Mods can do that too?
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Because I’m the Head Mod!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: And now that your restriction has been lifted, you should be able to trade through one-on-one chats too!
Well, with the trade restriction lifted, one-on-one chats should be unrestricted too.
I nodded and took one Inner Core out of the Elixir bottle.
[System] Wild Grylls has registered trade items.
[You]: Please eat this and stay strong.
[You]: And thank you so much for making an accommodation for me.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: No need to thank me!
[DontAbandonTheHero]: And you called it special treatment, but this is equal treatment!
[You]: It’s not equal treatment, it’s fair treatment, but thank you anyway.
[DontAbandonTheHero]: Yes! May the Goddess’s protection be with you on your journey!
Hadn’t they said they had some kind of religious job?
I ended the conversation after receiving the Head Mod’s final farewell.
‘Finally...!’
The suffocating trade restriction had been lifted.
