◈ Spring Never Comes to Stolen Fields ◈
Chapter 33: Cain
──────
When I opened my eyes, I checked the time.
It was 7:45 in the morning. Thankfully, it looked like I could keep my promise with Cain to be there by nine.
The room was familiar, yet unfamiliar. It was Luna's room.
I didn't remember exactly how I'd fallen asleep, but Luna had apparently dragged me here and imprisoned me without giving me any chance to escape.
Luna's soft breathing came from beside me.
What time did Luna have to leave by?
I couldn't tell whether I should wake her or just let her sleep.
Come to think of it, I'd spent all day yesterday getting scolded, so I hadn't even asked her the usual question about how her day had gone.
If not for everything with Yuri and Celia, I would've probably gone looking for Luna so we could tell each other about our days.
I'd been looking forward to imitating Raven's bizarre way of speaking, but it seemed I'd have to save that fun for later.
I stroked Luna's hair as she slept.
A smile formed on her lips, as if she liked my touch.
"Mmm... Sirius...?"
Maybe I shouldn't have woken her.
"Yeah. Luna."
"Did you sleep well?"
"Thanks to you."
"What time is it?"
"Almost eight."
Luna let out a huge yawn and asked, "What are you doing today, Sirius?"
"Our Party is under Cain's lead today, so he told us to come to the west gate by nine."
I adjusted my uniform while looking in the mirror.
"Sounds like you're going outside?"
"Probably. Who's in charge of you today, Luna?"
"Yesterday was Alfonso's boring, serious magic class. Today will probably be Leon's boring swordsmanship class. We're being called to the training ground, after all."
Luna seemed bored.
Then again, I hadn't exchanged a word with either Alfonso or Leon, but both looked like the type who had ‘I am such a diligent person’ written all over their faces.
"Yuri took me hunting in the forest outside the academy yesterday."
I brought it up, thinking I'd had at least a slightly more interesting day.
"Sounds fun. You kept going on and on about the human realm back when we were in the Demon World, so are you satisfied?"
I snickered and nodded.
Luna was still under the covers with only her head peeking out, and she looked dissatisfied.
"Aren't you doing a little too well without me, Sirius?" she said sulkily.
"It's not like that, Luna. This is work too. You know why we're here."
"Hmm~"
Luna got out of bed, came up behind me, and wrapped her arms around me.
"What are you doing?"
"Marking my territory."
She rubbed her face against the back of my jacket.
I couldn't see her face, but I was sure she looked incredibly cute.
"I should get going soon."
"It's still a little lacking."
She reluctantly loosened her arms and let me go.
"Are you free tonight?" Luna asked.
"Why?"
"Honestly, I don't really know what to do on the day I'm in charge."
Ah. I felt the same way.
Lady Luna Iaros of the Kingdom of Zeros and I, her servant, needed to follow a schedule fitting our roles.
"Is it tomorrow or the day after?"
"The day after tomorrow."
That was the day I was in charge too.
"All right. I'll come to your room once I'm done today."
"I'll be waiting."
She smiled brightly, clearly pleased.
I nodded and grabbed the doorknob.
"Wait, Sirius."
Luna stopped me.
"Yeah?"
"What I said yesterday. I hope you'll keep it firmly in mind."
One corner of her lips curled upward.
"Yes..."
Yesterday's memories suddenly came back to me, and my hand naturally went to my cheek.
So I got slapped yesterday...
Luna's obsession was a little scary. Honestly, very scary.
Even so, Luna's lips were far too sweet.
Someone frightening and painful, yet even sweeter and more alluring than that.
That was Luna.
"Have a good day~"
With those words behind me, I headed for the west gate.
I arrived right around nine.
Raven and Cain were already there, but Yuri didn't seem to have arrived yet.
She didn't seem like the type to be late, so it was unexpected.
Just as I thought that, Yuri came running toward us from far away in a panic.
"I'm sorry...! Haa... haa..."
She usually tied her hair up tightly to pretend she was a boy, but for some reason, she had left it down today.
"You made me wait. You're really useless, aren't you?"
Cain openly berated her again.
"Haa... I'm sorry..."
Yuri clasped her hands together and apologized to Cain.
She really was too nice.
If it had been Luna, she would've told him to say that again, and a fight would've broken out right there.
As always, Raven paid no attention to any of it and simply stared blankly at the sky.
I felt like I needed to learn composure from her if I wanted to survive when it really mattered.
"So where are we going today?"
I was honestly curious.
As if she agreed, Raven finally turned her head and looked our way.
"Sirius. You can look forward to it. Your big brother has prepared the full course for you."
Seeing how smug he looked, it seemed he really had prepared something.
That aside, why was he my big brother?
Cain led us out through the gate and walked for a while.
An incredibly ornate, expensive-looking carriage waited where he stopped.
Luna had told me not to, but my eyes widened again as I looked all around the carriage.
All we had in Homeron Village were carts...
Cain patted my shoulder as if he liked my reaction.
"Don't be surprised yet, Sirius. I guess your family doesn't have anything like this."
If someone came at me with skill, I could fight back. But when they came at me with something like this, all I could do was keep my mouth shut.
I decided not to say anything.
Still, one thought lingered in my head.
Your carriage is nice...
Yuri seemed to agree that the carriage was impressive.
"Wow. It's been such a long time since I've seen a luxurious carriage like this. Your family must be rich, Cain."
At least she'd seen one before.
My defeat.
"Hahaha! I'm the eldest son of House Leventus. Do you really think I'd ride in some shabby carriage?"
How would I know? I had no idea where that was.
Yuri's mouth fell open.
"House Leventus, the wealthiest family in the Principality of Eodin...?"
Yuri's helpful reaction was a great help to someone as ignorant about the human realm as I was.
All I knew about the Principality of Eodin was that Grand Duke Gairn ruled it.
I didn't even know much about the Ibellis Empire.
There was no way I'd know about some distant neighboring country.
Anyway, Cain seemed to be the son of an incredibly wealthy family.
I'm jealous. So jealous.
Someday, I would succeed too, meet a good woman, and rise through the world.
If I actually said something like that, Luna or Celia would probably try to sell me on the radiant glory awaiting me if I spent the rest of my life with them, but I couldn't think about that right now.
The moment I chose one of them, it felt like I'd either die from the Demon King's finger snap or have my head taken by the Hero inside the Demon King's Castle.
"That's right, House Leventus! This is nothing, so get in already. Every minute and second counts."
Cain roughly opened the carriage door and climbed in first.
Raven quietly followed him and sat beside him.
Yuri and I swallowed hard before climbing into the carriage.
At Cain's signal, the coachman set the carriage in motion.
"We don't know how many legal days off we'll get, so let's enjoy this one. Hahaha!"
Cain laughed heartily.
What on earth was this guy planning?
The carriage traveled for quite a while.
It felt like we spent a good three or four hours inside.
When the coachman said we had arrived, our Party all got out at once.
The sight before me was something I'd only ever seen in paintings during my time in the human realm.
"Welcome to Musto, the territory of House Leventus!"
We got off in what appeared to be a marketplace, and its scale was enormous.
The scents of every kind of spice tempted passersby, while bands playing unfamiliar instruments wandered through the streets.
Yuri and I could only keep exclaiming in amazement as we followed Cain.
I'd never seen such a foreign-looking street or the liveliness of so many people.
Maybe the capital of Ibellis was like this too.
After pushing through the crowd with Cain for a while, we reached a massive castle.
Everything about it was splendid, from its sheer size to the exterior materials.
Cain strode confidently up to the guards out front.
When they saw him approach, the guards shouted in booming voices.
"Welcome home, Young Master!"
They opened the enormous castle gates for our group.
The only castle I'd ever seen was Amelia's dreary one, but this scene had a certain romance to it.
I should become a lord too.
I found myself growing more jealous of Cain by the moment.
Cain nodded in satisfaction and beckoned to us.
"Let's have some fun before we go. Welcome to our castle."
Guided by the Leventus family's butler, who had come to receive us, we arrived at the dining room.
Every kind of delicacy from land and sea awaited us there.
There were so many dishes I'd never seen before, but one glance told me the ingredients were expensive.
At Cain's urging to eat as much as we wanted, we began our meal.
The academy food was good too, but I felt like I would never forget this meal even after I died.
Cain. You're really a good guy.
That thought kept growing inside me.
As Yuri and I eagerly ate, Cain casually spoke up.
"Eat plenty, everyone. You'll need to work hard later...?"
Cain gave us a lecherous smile.
What? That's scary.
