◈ The Dungeon Gallery's Terrifying Newbie ◈

Chapter 12: Manticore

──────

newbie: Minions?

└ humanluvr: Mhm mhm.

└ no_minions_4_me: Yeah.

└ golemking: If it were me, I'd recruit a Minion right now.

The Veterans unanimously recommended Minions.

Hadn't they told me not to recruit any at first because they might start a revolution?

When I asked why they were suddenly saying that.

└ humanluvr: The Anomaly Minions have the 'Activation' tag!

└ newbie: What's Activation??

└ humanluvr: It means they're only active during Waves.

└ humanluvr: To put it in terms you can understand, they're like people who only work when intruders enter, then sleep the rest of the time?

└ newbie: Ah, I see.

└ humanluvr: Minions with the Activation tag usually have a high chance of existing solely to "take out intruders," so... They won't harm the Dungeon Master.

└ humanluvr: So you don't need to worry about a revolution.

└ newbie: Thanks for explaining, love. Hehe.

└ humanluvr: Then give me a kiss when we meet later >_<

└ newbie: Pardon?

└ golemking: I have some like that among my Automatic Puppets, and they're really good at their jobs.

└ golemking: But why are these Minion descriptions so brutal...? There's one bastard that snaps your neck if you look away from it, LOL. What is it, a yandere...?

└ dip: Sounds just like humanluvr, yeah...

└ psychward_mvp: humanluvr is more of a menhera than a yandere...

Hmm.

Come to think of it, these guys really did talk like terminally online weirdos.

└ newbie: By the way, how do you guys know words like menhera and yandere?? Didn't you say you don't remember anything at all??

└ golemking: newbie.

└ newbie: Yeah.

└ golemking: Did someone teach you how to breathe when you were born?

└ newbie: Nope.

└ golemking: Community slang is like that for us... We just naturally know it...

Really?

What the hell was Oblivion, giving them such sophisticated and beautiful words?

└ humanluvr: newbie, I'm not a menhera T_T

└ humanluvr: Really...

└ newbie: LOL, okay.

Anyway, that was enough small talk.

Back to the main topic.

└ newbie: Which one looks best to you guys? I can afford one right now.

└ worldiscold: newbie, when did you earn that many Points???

└ newbie: I got them from killing Hobgoblins and Goblins last time. Hehe...

The chat stopped.

A moment later.

└ worldiscold: I'm going to kill myself.

└ op_ghost: Hey, hey. Breathe, breathe.

└ orange★: Honestly, seeing newbie rake in Points and experience does make me pretty jealous...

└ whaleyeah: An impressive guy who can make even the head mod's stomach hurt...

No.

I wasn't deliberately flexing on them.

Instead of just complaining that their stomachs hurt, they should recommend a Minion.

└ no_minions_4_me: I think the Guide looks good. Its description alone looks like it'll drive you insane...

└ psychward_mvp: I vote for that one too.

└ anonbutcher: I like that one too. It seems like it can do a little more.

└ golemking: Yandere go go go.

└ dip: How can you resist a yandere that snaps necks? LOL.

└ whaleyeah: Seriously, LOL.

└ skullbones: Game Master go go go. I like poker.

└ sealedphilo: ?

└ sealedconq: ?

└ op_ghost: Dude, can you even pick up cards with your hands? LOL.

└ skullbones: Everyone open your hooks and shut up.

Honestly, I'd already decided.

It was also the Minion that suited this maze best.

Still.

It was always necessary to cross-check.

That was why I'd asked on purpose.

Someone might call it fishing for validation.

So what?

As long as nobody noticed, it didn't matter.

└ humanluvr: I...

...

...

└ orange★: I like this one a little more too.

└ orange★: Though I think the others' opinions are reasonable as well.

Good.

I had my justification.

└newbie: Then I'll take the head mod's and humanluvr's opinions and give it a try.

└ golemking: What a shame.

└ dip: You'll get the yandere next time, right?

Hmm.

Probably?

* * *

Man-Faced Lion. Ruler of the Lowjinrat Great Mountain Range. A Dark School mage who had fallen into the form of a lion.

The Manticore had no faction and was not particularly powerful. Some might say his influence on the world was insignificant.

Even so, he had earned so many titles because of his grotesque, imposing appearance.

He was roughly four meters long and stood about one and a half meters tall at the shoulder.

The creature walked on four legs and looked more like an animal than a person.

Still, perhaps it was the uncanny valley.

His head was exactly like a human's.

Hair grew where a mane should have been, wrinkles lined his face, dark circles hung beneath his eyes, and he had twenty-eight teeth.

He looked like a forty-year-old mage working himself to death at a Mage Tower.

"Goblins, Hobgoblins, even Trolls. None of them stand a chance."

He muttered in human speech.

His intelligence was much the same.

The Manticore had once been human.

His way of thinking was simply more vicious and selfish than most.

Drunk on the sweet desire for power and wisdom, he had sacrificed twenty-seven children and transformed into a monster.

"Dreamland..."

A dungeon had appeared in Lowjinrat despite it not being a Position Shift Cycle.

Unfortunately, the Manticore was a mage, but he did not know much about dungeons.

When he had still been human, he spent all his time at a Mage Tower.

He knew as much about dungeons as any ordinary person. He was no expert.

"It clearly looks like a newly formed dungeon. How is it holding out?"

He had noticed that Dreamland was a newly born dungeon, unlike the others.

You could tell from its entrance.

Dungeon entrances were strange.

They resembled the legendary Black Gate that had been passed down in stories.

A round archway made of obsidian.

At its center was a rippling crack.

As time passed, unidentifiable foreign matter accumulated on the gate's exterior, though it could not be seen with the naked eye.

Only mages or those sensitive to Mana could sense it, and no method could remove it. Nor could the gate itself ever be destroyed.

There was no foreign matter at Dreamland's entrance.

It was clear proof that it was a newly formed dungeon.

"It looked like an unremarkable dungeon."

The Manticore had seen the Dungeon Master through the Goblins.

He had assumed the Dungeon Master had some unusual talent, but all the Dungeon Master did was swing a crude knife.

"There must be something it's hiding..."

There probably would not be a problem.

Unlike Goblins and Trolls, the Manticore was not stupid, and he possessed magical knowledge.

Still.

It was best to prepare thoroughly.

Even a newly formed dungeon was still a dungeon.

"I should make preparations."

He was a monster now, but he had once been a mage of the Dark School.

There were still people he knew.

Magic Stones were the most valuable treasure in the world.

Even a fragment weighing only a few hundred grams could sell for hundreds of millions.

If he absorbed the power contained in that dungeon's Magic Stone.

He would gain far greater strength than he had now.

The Manticore left the dungeon entrance.

Meanwhile.

Dreamland's Dungeon Master had been taking a brief walk outside when they sensed something suspicious and hid their presence.

"That thing is fucking disgusting."

They offered a brief impression from afar.

Title: This Is a Real Anomaly

Author: newbie

This bastard looks fucking disgusting. What is it?

I thought I'd lose if I fought it, so I just hid and watched...

*Comments

sealedphilo: It really is fucking disgusting, LOL.

op_ghost: That's a Manticore. Why's that guy there?

─────

Manticore.

That seemed to be the name of that horrifying Man-Faced Lion.

└ newbie: Ghost bro, who the hell is that guy??

└ op_ghost: He used to be some weak-ass Dark School mage, but he killed children and turned into a monster with them.

└ op_ghost: I heard he's pretty infamous as a criminal.

Pardon?

That bastard was truly heinous.

└ newbie: Seeing as he was lurking around the dungeon entrance, he's the culprit, right?

└ op_ghost: I think there's a 99% chance, LOL.

└ op_ghost: You should be especially careful this time... There's a chance he'll bring other Dark School mages too.

└ newbie: What's the Dark School?

└ op_ghost: Dark Mages. A group that sacrifices human lives to use magic.

└ op_ghost: I've fought them a few times, and they're bigger evil spirits than I am, LOL.

Hmm.

It looked like I'd most likely be dealing with humans this time.

Humans who could even use magic.

└ newbie: What if they come to kill me? Couldn't they suddenly teleport in and stab me?

└ op_ghost: What kind of elementary-school bullshit is that...

└ op_ghost: You can't use any spatial-movement magic inside a dungeon, aside from Escape Scrolls used to get out, so don't worry about that.

└ op_ghost: Even Blessed Ones can't pull that shit.

└ newbie: What's a Blessed One now...?

└ no_minions_4_me: People who can see the Status Window, like us.

Was that true?

That was fucking shocking.

There were people besides us Dungeon Masters who could see a Status Window?

└ newbie: Really?

└ no_minions_4_me: Yeah. They even resurrect at Shrines when they die.

└ newbie: That's ridiculously overpowered...

└ no_minions_4_me: Other than dying of old age, there's no way to permanently kill them, so nobody wants to deal with them. They're not that common among intruders, though, so don't worry.

Anyway.

My enemy right now was the Manticore.

I could worry about the rest later.

I took my eyes off the hologram.

Then I looked at the motionless mass of liquid in the Core Room.

It wasn't Malrang.

Malrang was on my lap right now.

This was the new Minion I'd bought.

"I'm counting on you."

I hoped it would prove useful against those vicious Dark Mages.
