◈ The Dungeon Gallery's Terrifying Newbie ◈
Chapter 36: Helper (2)
──────
A Helper entered the dungeon.
Sure, I had complained about how no intruders ever came into my dungeon.
But I hadn't meant for one of our Blessed One big shots' lackeys to take an interest in me.
While the intruders lingered near the entrance,
I made a post on the Gallery.
The title should probably be, "newbie is fucking dead."
newbie: What the fuck do I do...
└orange★: LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
└orange★: So it's finally come for newbie's dungeon...
The head mod was the first to comment.
Head mod?
I don't think this is a situation to be laughing about right now...
└newbie: A Blessed One is one thing, but a Blessed One's Helper is fucking...
└orange★: Blessed Ones can raise Helpers kind of like our Minions. They can't make Minions themselves like we can, but if they add someone useful-looking to their party, that person's level goes up too. The Blessed One can also directly raise their Traits and Stats.
└orange★: Raising Helpers must be efficient in the System, since they always travel with exactly three of them. That one is in a Blessed One named Sinclair's party. He came to my dungeon not long ago too.
Sinclair. I'd heard that name before.
According to Restia, they were a Blessed One staying in the South Kingdom.
Apparently, the head mod had given them a proper reality check and crushed their spirit, so Sinclair was taking a break.
└orange★: That bastard's ability is fucking simple.
└newbie: What is it??
└orange★: The lower his HP gets, the stronger he becomes. And if he dies, he comes back to life once, but only inside a dungeon. Well, you're not going to beat that bastard up anyway, so you'd better focus on the part where he comes back to life.
└newbie: ???? I get magic and swordsmanship, but dying and coming back to life is what...
└orange★: That's the power those Blessed One bastards have. Think of their lackeys as the same kind as our Minions. Some of them have completely ridiculous Traits too.
Fuck.
I thought there was only magic and Aura in this world.
They even had supernatural abilities?
└newbie: Head mod, doesn't that mean I'm seriously fucked?? If that bastard figures things out, leaves, and brings Sinclair back here, won't Dreamland be finished??
└orange★: Could happen.
└newbie: Then why are you laughing...
└orange★: Because it's not very likely.
Huh?
└orange★: That one's name is Max.
└orange★: To explain simply, Max acted too rashly and triggered a trap, which got one of Sinclair's cherished party members killed.
└orange★: The others barely escaped half-dead, and according to the Gallery users, Max had caused plenty of trouble in other dungeons too. Everyone already disliked Max quite a bit.
└orange★: Seeing as Max came in alone, my guess is Sinclair cut ties with him?
└orange★: Can't say for sure that it's 100% UFC, but who knows?
└orange★: Blessed Ones do cut party members loose fairly often. Max might've come here to hit it big in a newly formed dungeon and enjoy the rest of his life after being cut loose.
└orange★: Max could bring Sinclair information about a newly formed dungeon, but it's unlikely Dreamland will reach Sinclair's ears anytime soon.
└orange★: Blessed Ones normally never leave party members they've carefully raised on their own.
└orange★: Think of all the time and effort they put in. It'd be a waste. If Max entered a dungeon alone, it's best to assume Sinclair has already half given up on him.
└orange★: And no intruders entered for two months, right? The name "newly formed dungeon" is so damn tempting. Max probably either found it by chance or has been keeping the information to himself.
└orange★: Also, Max is dumb as bricks LOL.

"Hmm..."
After dealing with Yuben last time, nobody had entered, so I thought I could quietly stay under the radar.
This was turning out to be more troublesome than expected.
At least for now, I should be relieved that I wasn't immediately involved with a Blessed One.
Still.
Watching those bastards investigate the elevator, this didn't look good.
Did they know Yuben?
I'd wanted to ask Yuben how far information about Dreamland had spread.
They already had information,
and it felt like they were making decisions based on it.
"The elevator's already been figured out..."
Surely not that many people knew about it.
Thankfully, I had successfully stopped Yuben's Wave last time, so no more information had leaked out after that.
I put both feet up on the table.
I only needed to reach level 80.
Once I reached level 80, I could somehow deal with information leaks.
But was that still impossible for now?
It would only be possible if nobody made it back alive.
"How could I make people say I'd handled the intruders well?"
Escape Scrolls.
I didn't know about the others, but Max probably had one.
I stroked the wriggling Malrang and looked at the monitor.
For now, should I watch a little longer?

Dungeon Exploration, Day 1
Max looked over Yuben's Dungeon Walkthrough.
'This was actually real?'
It was certainly a strange place.
Max had traveled to many places with Sinclair to conquer dungeons,
but this was the first dungeon this unusual.
Normally, dungeons were structured around killing Minions and breaking traps.
Combat was unavoidable in the process.
But.
The space called Dreamland that lay before Max felt closer to a place solved through blood and riddles than sweat and determination.
"The unlit hallway was a strange place. It's the first time magic has been completely unable to detect anything. If I'd tried to investigate that place any further... Ugh, it's terrifying just imagining it."
"I encountered an Insect Human, and it really didn't react as long as I stayed still. You were right. It was incredibly fascinating and terrifying."
Max now understood why combat wasn't that important in Yuben's Dungeon Walkthrough and why it said it was fine to form a party out of ordinary people.
Should I have entered with slaves instead?
Dungeons were consistent.
That meant the Minions and traps they encountered from now on would probably have the same feel.
Combat wasn't important.
That felt quite fresh to Max.
Max's party consisted of the following people.
"Still, I want to try Detection Magic on that unlit hallway again. I'm curious. It doesn't seem to be magic, but if it isn't magic, then what is it?"
Denrid, a third-circle mage burning with curiosity.
A mage was necessary in a dungeon.
Magic was useful in many ways.
Denrid had been introduced by an acquaintance Max knew.
Unlike most mages, Denrid was warmhearted and entertaining to talk to.
"It's the first time I've felt like I couldn't hunt a monster."
Luka, a monster hunter, frowned as she spoke about the horrifying Insect Human.
Max had met her at a tavern the day before.
She had joined other monster hunters to subdue an Ogre before, and she had a fairly good reputation around here.
"......"
Jack, a quiet slum knife fighter with skillful hands.
Jack was a capable assassin who had once assassinated a knight.
Max had met Jack while traveling as a member of Sinclair's party, and Jack had considerable combat ability.
"Phew."
And Max, a former companion of a Blessed One.
All four had real skill in their own fields.
Of course, they were far inferior to Sinclair's party, but Max was personally satisfied.
'What a waste.'
For a hastily assembled party, it was an excellent lineup.
At least, until Max learned what Dreamland really was.
It would have been better to come with slaves and keep the Magic Stone all to myself.
No.
The distribution could be decided at the end after seeing how things went, so maybe it didn't matter much.
"None of you have an Escape Scroll, right?"
"How could we possibly have something that expensive?"
"It's a newly formed dungeon anyway. And we have Max here, who was in Blessed One Sinclair's party. What is there to worry about?"
Jack, who had remained silent, spoke up.
"Why enter a dungeon with us instead of Sinclair?"
Jack probably wasn't the only one curious.
It was only natural for them to wonder why Max, famous as Sinclair's companion, had left that party behind and brought them here instead.
"Consider it personal business."
"Understood."
When Max's mood soured, Jack didn't ask any further questions.
"If we get the Magic Stone, the reward will be split fairly. We'll split it four ways amicably."
"I have a question. Why are there four of us? We're not a Blessed One's party."
"This is more efficient. More people means dividing the reward further, and people end up fighting more too."
Denrid nodded as if that made sense.
"Then let's find the password."
"I'll go into the contraption. You might faint when you see the Insect Human's face, and quiet Jack might even scream like a shy little girl."
"That won't happen, but I'll leave it to you, Luka."
Luka had encountered the Insect Human before.
As if she had nothing left to fear from the contraption, she readily volunteered.
"Ah, one last question. You said we shouldn't leave through the unlit hallway?"
"Right. The way to reach the next Area probably isn't by conquering the unlit hallway, but by pressing the number buttons on the contraption..."
"Enough with the boring talk. I'll try 10, 9, and 1 in that order, okay?"
"Okay."
Luka got into the elevator.
"Can you hear me? Yes. Understood."
Denrid could use Communication Magic.
Luka continued the exploration while keeping in touch with Denrid.
So far, everything was going smoothly.
The two Areas beyond the elevator were concerning,
but with the teamwork they had shown so far, wouldn't they be fine?
Max closed his eyes.
'Once I get the Magic Stone, I'll rub it in that bastard Sinclair's face.'
There was a reason Max wanted to conquer this dungeon.
Sure, getting the Magic Stone and living comfortably was part of it, but revenge against Sinclair was a bigger reason.
After everything I did for Sinclair's party.
Calling me incompetent?
Daring to throw me away?
Sinclair was an arrogant bastard who believed they had all the answers just because they were a Blessed One.
Max had to make Sinclair regret it.
People could make mistakes.
That hadn't been my mistake in the first place.
The others, including Sinclair, simply hadn't been able to keep up with my pace.
Once I behead the Dungeon Master, put the head on display, and take the Magic Stone as a trophy, it will prove that I was right and Sinclair was wrong.
At least, Max thought so.
'I'll sell the Magic Stone, settle this grudge, and enjoy the rest of my life in peace.'

Dungeon Exploration, Day 2
"Luka!? Luka!? You suddenly screamed, so you startled me. You made it safely to the next Area."
The group had figured out how to reach the next Area.
It was thanks to Luka's enthusiasm.
She had investigated so earnestly that it almost seemed like she was pushing herself too hard.
"The buttons 2, 5, and 3 have been confirmed. Is there anything else unusual?"
But instead of arriving at the Straight Passage behind the elevator,
Luka had reached the Wide Hollow, Area 2.
"Please wait a moment."
Denrid, who was communicating with her, seemed to have noticed something strange.
After using Detection Magic, Denrid informed the others in a greatly flustered voice.
"Strange structures have suddenly appeared in Area 2..."
Starting with a long hallway, there were countless rooms connected to it.
There were also just as many floors and staircases.
Area 2, which had been an empty cavern with nothing in it, had suddenly transformed into something like a building.
Max stroked his chin.
The map showed that Area 2 was enormous and square-shaped. So this had been hidden inside it.
'Then there's a high chance that hidden structures could suddenly appear in Area 1 too, just like in Area 2.'
There was probably a Teleportation Device in Area 2 as well.
After all, there was no Dungeon Master in the world kind enough to let intruders pass through Area 1 for free.
"Let's go too."
That was when Denrid raised a hand to stop the group.
"Wait. Luka, calm down and tell me slowly. A Faceless Girl with eight arms suddenly appeared and told you to hand over all your belongings?"
The situation was taking a strange turn.
"Max, it seems Luka encountered a Minion. The Minion says you can't bring dangerous items into the School... Luka, Luka!? Are you all right!? Your r-right arm is broken..."
Judging by Denrid's expression, it was clearly serious.
Max stopped walking for a moment and frowned.
This wasn't in Yuben's Dungeon Walkthrough.
What the hell was happening?
"For now, do what the Minion tells you, Luka. Do exactly as she says."
Denrid spoke urgently, and silence lingered among the group for a while after that.
"What happened to Luka?"
"She says all her belongings were confiscated. They were left in a place called the Faculty Office, and her right arm is broken..."
Her belongings had been confiscated.
Max touched the Escape Scroll inside his clothes.
Should he move forward?
Or turn back?
He had reached a crossroads.
