◈ The Saviour Embarks on a Nameless Journey

Chapter 16: Relationships

“A Sacred Beast? Some amusing things happened in the time I haven’t seen you.”

The hem of Elaine’s black dress fluttered as she gently landed on the ground.

Jet-black hair, a pitch-black dress, and matching black shoes. The hand she extended toward us, along with her exposed face and slender neck, appeared to glow faintly white.

It was the form of a woman that Elaine often chose, one that retained a hint of youth, making it difficult to call her entirely alluring.

“...It’s really thin.”

Elaine peeked at my back as she lifted her robe.

Is it really?

“Lord Shinju is quite shy. Please refrain from outright staring at him.”

Marius, smiling gently at Elaine, subtly took the robe from her hands and pulled it back down over me.

“Oh my, but if the Sacred Beast is in a position where it can be seen, that must mean it’s okay to look.”

Elaine took hold and lifted my robe again.

“You might not be able to see it anymore if this keeps up. Perhaps you should reconsider how you're closing the distance.”

Marius seized the robe, pulling and smoothing it out.

“Shinju, huh. How fitting. Did you name it after its color?”

And yet again, Elaine lifted my robe.

“Enough messing with my robe already, you two!”

First it was feeding Pya apricots, now it’s lifting my robe to catch a glimpse—stop messing with me!

“Pya—”

A faint voice came from my back.

“It seems to be uncomfortable.”

Marius suddenly pulled my robe.

“I’m still not done observing.”

Elaine kept holding my robe too.

“You bastards! Don’t use body enhancement for something like this!”

The two of them kept tugging on my robe while ignoring me, the one who’s wearing it.

The Witch Elaine and the former Head Priest Marius. Though their magic is that of a different kind, both are as powerful. The robe ended up tearing apart.

“It’s because you bought it carelessly. Give it to me, I’ll mend it and apply some enhancements while I'm at it.”

“It’s a rather cheap robe for someone who was part of the demon lord’s subjugation party. Should I atleast strengthen it for you?”

“Just apologize already!”

I got angry as the two of them stretched out their hands and spoke.

Reluctantly, I took off my robe and put on my original cloak. It seemed like Pya’s ears were visible, but there was nothing I could do about it.

The break came to an end, and I got back on my horse.

“That aside, you really did become young again, just like the old times.”

Elaine sat on her broom and started floating beside me.

“You’ve become quite good at riding your broom, huh.”

“Well of course, if you’ve been doing it for 50 years.”

“You should’ve just quietly used a washbasin, but instead you kept losing your balance trying to ride a broom.”

Partway through the Demon Lord subjugation, she switched from a washbasin to a broom. She claimed that 'It’s the latest trend,' but she most likely just prioritized speed for the sake of battle. I don’t really understand magic, though.

“Why not switch back to the washbasin? There likely won’t be any serious battles left.”

“This one pleases me so I’m fine.”

Elaine replied with a shrug.

“It seems Io is practicing as well. I’ve heard that while washbasins are difficult to master, once you get the hang of them, they’re quite comfortable to ride.”

Marius scattered herb seeds from atop his horse as he spoke.

They're common wild herbs now—something us travelers might pick and toss into our soup, but back in the days when the weather was erratic and monsters kept attacking, they vanished from the forests and plains. Crops couldn't be harvested properly, so people ate whatever they could find.

After the Demon Lord vanished and folk began to regain a semblance of peace, the temple took to urging travelers to scatter seeds. For a time, they handed out only the hardy sort—wild berries, herbs, and nuts that needed little tending.

Well, odds are this was his idea.

I glanced at the man beside me, the thought slipping through.

“May I ask how you became young again?”

“A wish to the goddess. Though, the youth was more of a side effect. This time around, I plan to take it slow—retrace the past, eat good food, visit the places I once gave up on, and walk through bright, open landscapes. Fifty years is a long time—I'm sure the world’s changed plenty.”

“My, how candid of you. I wasn’t expecting a straightforward answer.”

Elaine wore a blank, surprised look—caught completely off guard.

“Fifty years of travelling alongside each other, yet neither of us spoke our wishes aloud.”

“Fufu, mine’s still a secret.”

Elaine laughed, pressing a finger to her lips like sharing a little secret.

“Well then, I shall keep mine a secret too.”

Marius smiled.

Both kept their smiles fixed only on their lips, neither looking away.

They were smiling—but there was nothing warm or pleasant about it.

“It’s irritating already, so stop it both of you.”

Those two have always quietly competed with each other. I shouldn’t have anything to do with it—and yet, somehow, I always end up getting roped in.

“Whatever do you mean?”

“Indulging in a normal conversation and then being called irritating is quite upsetting if I must say.”

I only heard about Marius’s wish not too long ago, I recall—

but faced with the answers from these two, I can’t help but feel a bit drained and fall silent.

“Come to think of it, it’s about time Io started looking for a staff of her own.”

“A staff? That’s rather early, isn’t it?”

“Oh no, if anything, she’s late for it. With her abilities, having a staff would make controlling them far easier.”

Much like the sword I carry at my left side, seeking a weapon that suits oneself is a longing shared by those who wish to be strong.

For those with magic especially, having one brings stability to both their power and their mind—so finding the right fit is nearly essential.

Well, most folks just make do with a staff crafted by some artisan.

“So Io will be setting off on her journey too...”

Marius spoke with quiet reflection.

“Come to think of it, ever since you left, the vice high priest has looked absolutely worn out, you know?”

“He’ll make a fine high priest in time. The gods do favor those who overcome hardship.”

Elaine narrowed her eyes at Marius, but he simply smiled, utterly unfazed.

“I’d rather have a say in who does the favoring.”

“Pya—”

…Not that I needed agreement from that one.
