◈ The Saviour Embarks on a Nameless Journey

Chapter 17: Wil and Elm

Her pale hand merely rested lightly on the broom’s handle. And yet, whether crouching or stretching, her body’s center stayed perfectly aligned over it. Seems even mages have decent core strength.

That thought crossed my mind as I looked at Elaine.

“Think Io’ll be riding a broom too, one day?”

“Who can say? It is rather difficult, you know.”

The witch gave a soft chuckle, her lips red as though painted with crimson.

Had this been the first form I saw her in, maybe I’d have found her... alluring.

Unfortunately, no. When we first met, she was a burly man. And during our journey, she even took the form of a young girl. She’s changed form so many times I can’t quite settle into any one image of her.

With a graceful wave of her hand, a red fruit appeared in Elaine’s palm. She tossed one to me and another to Marius.

"More importantly, unless you learn some form of Expansion or Spatial Transfer, travel through the frontier will be unforgiving."

With that, she took a bite of the fruit.

Expansion is a branch of magic that allows a container to hold more than its outward appearance suggests, increasing its inner capacity without altering its form.

Spatial Transfer on the other hand, enables one to extend their reach across distance and retrieve items from a separate location.

…Or so I once heard from Elaine.

The latter is said to be far more advanced, often requiring pre-established enchantments at the target location. Yet Elaine performed it with effortless grace, as if it were second nature to her.

The red fruit in his hand was sweet at first bite, followed by a gentle tartness. It left the mouth feeling refreshed, more to his liking than fruits that were simply sweet.

“Makes me nostalgic. Shato always used to grimace at the taste of this ram fruit,” Marius said with a distant look in his eyes.

“He could have just eaten a peach instead. But no, he insisted on eating what everyone else had,”

Elaine added, her voice soft and graceful.

As they walked side by side, their talk turned to companions no longer present. Unlike those past journeys, the sunlight now was warm, and the forest green and alive.

The chirping of small birds was interrupted by a voice in the distance.

“Lord Marius...!”

“Lord Marius. Sir Wil and Elm have arrived. Please allow us to accompany you.”

A lively voice echoed through the woods.

“Perhaps it is just a beast making noise,”

Marius said, feigning indifference.

"How could they be anyone but your people? I don't need an escort!"

"Nor do I."

"The shouting brat… no wait, a girl? I don't know her, but Sir Wil of the Templar Order is your personal guard, isn’t he?"

Even without looking back, a glint of white armor caught the edge of my vision.

I'd seen him a few times myself when meeting with Marius, and he'd always offered a proper greeting. Polite, calm, and sharp-eyed, though a bit too loyal for his own good. Dutiful to the point of being inflexible. For him, Marius comes before anything.

To be blunt, he’s a pain to deal with.

"...He slipped out while His Grace was away from the capital."

"And failed miserably to shake him off, clearly."

"Honestly, both of you are too noisy,"

Elaine said with a sigh, brushing her hair back.

nowing her, she likely guessed I would set off the moment she heard I’d regained my youth. So she gave Wil some mission and had him sent out of the capital. During that time, she probably shoved her duties onto the vice high priest, tangled up the temple side with delay tactics, and made her move.

I’ve always done things my own way. I kept clear of paperwork and noble politics as much as possible. Now that I’m old, I can move around freely. But Marius is still active in the court. Of course he’d have people chasing after him. Or rather, greeting him.

Still, the moment I set off on this journey, Marius decided to tag along, Alina gave me a grand send-off, Io came with us, Pya latched onto me, we ran into bandits, and Elaine showed up… isn’t this just too much?

This was supposed to be my solo journey...!

Two horses galloped up behind us and slowed to a trot as they caught up.

“Lord Marius, please refrain from wandering off on your own,”

said the young man with a pleasant smile.

“I no longer hold the seat of High Priest. I am not someone who needs your protection,”

said the old man, also smiling cheerfully.

Sparks practically flew between the two of them.

“Wow, she's riding a broom. Is that Lady Elaine the witch?”

A bright, excited voice cut through their tension without a care.

“So they say,”

Elaine replied, her tone composed.

“I am Elm, squire of the Templar Order and apprentice to Sir Wil. It is an honor to meet you, Lady Elaine!”

The one gazing at Elaine with sparkling eyes was a girl wearing a white breastplate. She spoke in the manner of a man, though it was clear she was a young woman training to be a knight.

“And this person here is...”

Elm turned her gaze toward me.

“You must be the rumored secret child of Lord Suirun!”

She clapped her hands and announced it loudly, still on her horseback.

“Like hell I am!!”

These bastards...!
