Chapter 24: Omnipotent Godly Doctor (2)

──────

A silence fell over the courtyard before Blood-Nurturing Valley’s main hall.

Everyone wore a different expression, but most of them stared at me in surprise.

It was only natural. Bizarre Oddity Evil Heaven, who had not taken a successor even after the War Between Justice and Evil, had taken a disciple.

The Tyrannical Blood Brigade Leader Gu SangWoong, in particular, looked full of doubt.

Perhaps he found it difficult to believe that Evil Heaven had accepted someone with a damaged dantian as a disciple.

It could not be helped.

Tap!

I assumed a proper stance, covered my right fist with my left palm, and bowed.

“Hail the Blood! Hail the Blood! Hail, Hail the Blood! I am So WoonHwi. I am an insignificant training cadet, but Venerable One saw potential in me and accepted me as his disciple.”

I greeted them confidently, yet respectfully.

Evil Heaven did not show it, but the corners of his mouth slowly rose.

It had been worth flattering the old man.

‘It must be true?’

‘Venerable One actually took a disciple.’

Since I had emphasized once more that I was his disciple, murmurs rose from all around.

Blood-Hand Witch Han BaekHa broke the commotion.

“Congratulations on taking a disciple, Venerable One. It is a great blessing for the main cult.”

She offered her congratulations with a fist-and-palm salute.

The Blood Cult members from Blood-Nurturing Valley, the veiled women who seemed to have accompanied the Blood-Hand Witch, and the affiliated Blood Cult members all performed the Blood Cult’s formal salute and offered their congratulations.

“Congratulations.”

“Senior, congratulations.”

There was no taking it back now.

I had become the disciple of a Venerable One. The rumor would spread quickly.

I had never drawn this much attention in my previous life, so it left me feeling unsettled.

Was this why having a powerful backer mattered?

- That is how the world works. You have to attach yourself to the right person if you want to succeed.

A Short Sword was talking like an old man who had lived through several lifetimes.

Still, it was true.

I had received attention I had never known in my previous life.

But this attention would only last for a while.

‘I need strength of my own.’

- Right, right.

I felt it more keenly than ever.

But I was not imagining this, was I?

The Blood-Hand Witch, still holding her fist-and-palm salute, was looking directly into my eyes.

Flinch!

For some reason, a chill ran through me.

Perhaps it was because she was one of the eleven officials who led the Blood Cult, but she possessed an air unlike everyone else’s. Her very presence was on a different level.

A powerful pressure radiated from her eyes.

- Is she telling you to lower your eyes or something?

‘I do not think so.’

That did not seem to be what she meant.

Yet strangely, I felt as if I were being drawn into her gaze.

Just as I began to feel dizzy, the innate life energy in my chest surged hotly. The dizziness faded, and my mind returned to normal.

A strange light appeared in Blood-Hand Witch Han BaekHa’s eyes as she looked at me.

‘Ah...’

What had that been?

Then Evil Heaven’s massive body blocked me from view.

His sound telepathy reached my ears.

[Do not look that wench in the eye. An immature brat like you could easily fall under her spell.]

So that had caused the dizziness.

Yet I was fine.

I did not know why my innate life energy had begun circulating on its own, but it had freed me from the dizziness.

Unaware of that, Evil Heaven shouted irritably.

“Do not do anything unnecessary, Blood-Hand Witch.”

“How could I? How could I dare do such a thing before Venerable One?”

She slightly lowered her head and denied it.

She was a frightening woman.

She had openly tested me right in front of everyone, yet her expression had not changed at all.

It was not through luck alone that she had claimed one of the Seven Blood Stars’ positions as a woman.

She must have possessed outstanding Martial Arts and boldness.

“Hmph! You would do well not to provoke me. You know that when I am in a foul mood, being a Blood Star will not mean a damn thing.”

Of course, Evil Heaven was not someone even that boldness could overcome.

The epithet Bizarre Oddity suited him perfectly.

Still, it did not feel bad to see him looking out for me as his disciple.

Or was it simply his own pride?

“Of course.”

She answered without losing her composure.

Evil Heaven snorted, seemingly displeased by her attitude.

“Hmph!”

Still, perhaps because she was one of the Blood Cult’s highest officials, he did not vent his anger by attacking her.

“That is enough. I need to see the Divine Doctor at once.”

“Senior...”

The Tyrannical Blood Brigade Leader Gu SangWoong looked troubled as he tried to say something, but Han BaekHa raised a hand to stop him.

Then she answered in his place.

“Now is not a good time, Venerable One.”

“It looks as though your business is finished. What is the problem?”

“You know the Divine Doctor’s disposition, do you not?”

“Disposition, my foot. You mean he is fussy.”

‘Ah...’

At that volume, the Divine Doctor would hear him inside.

Why provoke the man whose help we had come to seek?

Did Evil Heaven intend to use force if things went badly?

I was grateful, but this was becoming burdensome.

“Not now.”

Yet she stood firm.

I had expected her to yield when the mad old man began causing a scene, so this was unexpected.

Could she be confident that she would not lose to him in Martial Arts?

“Oh? Is that so?”

Evil Heaven’s expression changed.

The muscles in his thick arms twitched. It felt as though trouble was about to break out.

Then, at that moment,

“Let them enter.”

A smooth, deep voice came from inside the main hall.

The Tyrannical Blood Brigade Leader Gu SangWoong frowned and turned his head.

The door was slightly open, and he seemed to be looking through the gap at the Omnipotent Godly Doctor inside.

“It is all right.”

The quiet voice came again.

Gu SangWoong looked at Han BaekHa.

She let out a shallow sigh and stepped aside.

“Please enter.”

“Heh heh, you should have done that from the start.”

Evil Heaven relaxed his clenched fist.

The stifling atmosphere quickly eased as well.

“Heh heh, let us go.”

Somehow, I felt embarrassed.

Evil Heaven’s unreasonable methods required a very thick skin, regardless of his strength.

Still, it was fortunate that nothing had happened.

Creak!

When the door opened, a spacious room came into view.

I was inwardly expectant.

I was about to meet the Central Plains’ greatest physician, a man said to be able to save anyone who was not already dead.

‘Ah!’

A middle-aged man with graying hair sat before an antique table.

He was remarkably handsome.

He looked like the sort of man who must have made many women weep in his youth. No, he was still handsome enough to do so now.

He was completely different from the sort of physician I had imagined.

The SoDam Sword snickered.

- He does not have white hair, white eyebrows, and a white beard?

‘Is that not usually how it goes?’

He was the greatest physician of this age, after all.

I had expected someone who looked seasoned by age, but his face made it difficult to look away.

However, the Omnipotent Godly Doctor was not alone in the room.

‘Who is that?’

Beyond a bamboo blind made from thin strips of bamboo, a figure was visible.

Judging by the slender silhouette, the figure appeared to be a woman.

Before the blind stood four women with their faces covered by white gauze veils, seemingly guards or attendants.

- Pfft. Why are those two so fat? They have double chins.

‘Hmm...’

As the SoDam Sword said, two of the women were exceptionally large.

They were so plump that their chins folded over, making them imposing in an entirely different way from Evil Heaven.

‘Do not judge people by their appearance.’

- Really? Let us see if you still say that when it is time for you to marry.

‘...’

I could not deny it.

“Why are you two coming in as well?”

Evil Heaven spoke irritably to Gu SangWoong and Han BaekHa as they followed us inside.

Han BaekHa answered with her usual expressionless face.

“The pulse examination was still underway. You arrived in the middle of it, Venerable One.”

“Hmph.”

Ignoring her words, Evil Heaven sat before the handsome Omnipotent Godly Doctor.

Only the Tyrannical Blood Brigade Leader seemed uneasy at his brazen behavior.

“Divine Doctor, it has been a long time.”

“You remain as robust as ever, Venerable One.”

The Omnipotent Godly Doctor’s voice was a deep baritone that seemed to echo through a cave. It was impressive.

He had every quality that would make women fall for him.

The charm of a mature man...

“Would you care for a cup of tea?”

The Omnipotent Godly Doctor gestured toward the teapot on the table with his palm.

Perhaps because he had reached the pinnacle of his field, even his smallest actions carried elegance.

“No need. You refined fellow can drink all the tea you want.”

- Look at that elegance.

The SoDam Sword clicked its tongue.

Right. Our mad old man had traded away elegance long ago.

It was like two people with completely opposite dispositions had met.

Evil Heaven grinned.

“I will be direct. Treat my disciple.”

“Treat him?”

At that, the Omnipotent Godly Doctor looked at me standing behind Evil Heaven.

“Greetings, Divine Doctor. I am So WoonHwi, Venerable One’s disciple.”

I hurriedly gave a fist-and-palm salute and bowed.

The Omnipotent Godly Doctor swept his strange gaze over me from head to toe.

Then he spoke.

“Your disciple does not appear to be particularly ill anywhere.”

That was only natural.

There was a problem with my dantian, but I looked healthy on the outside.

Evil Heaven pointed at where my dantian was with a thick finger.

“The problem is here.”

“...The dantian.”

He understood immediately.

There was no reason to hide it, so Evil Heaven nodded.

“If you treat my disciple, I will give you my engraved plaque. It should prove useful.”

Thud!

Evil Heaven took a wooden engraved plaque from his robes and placed it on the table as though he were doing the Divine Doctor a favor.

An engraved plaque was much like the identity plaque that established a martial artist’s identity.

For martial artists, giving someone their engraved plaque meant that if the recipient was ever in danger or requested help, the giver would provide aid regardless of the reason.

- Wow. The old man is really putting thought into this.

I agreed.

I had not expected him to make a request while even offering his engraved plaque.

He must have brought it out because he knew the Omnipotent Godly Doctor was stingy when it came to treatment, but it seemed he truly did think of me as his disciple.

‘This will be a difficult choice.’

It was Bizarre Oddity’s engraved plaque.

Even for the Omnipotent Godly Doctor, it was worth considering.

Perhaps he would treat my dantian even without that medical herb.

But then,

“I refuse.”

The Omnipotent Godly Doctor coldly refused.

As if he had no need for the engraved plaque at all, he pushed it back toward Evil Heaven.

“What?”

Evil Heaven’s face twisted fiercely.

I understood how he felt.

I had not expected the Divine Doctor to refuse without even considering it.

“Omnipotent Godly Doctor!”

Then the Omnipotent Godly Doctor took something from a bundle beneath the table and placed it on top.

Clatter!

The moment everyone saw it, they were left open-mouthed.

Even Evil Heaven.

- Wow... How many are there?

On the table was a bundle of engraved plaques strung together with thin cord.

At a glance, there seemed to be more than fifty.

Among those engraved plaques, I even spotted several shocking names.

‘True Person Jongseon, the sect leader of Wudang Sect... Fierce King Tyrant’s Road Jin Gyun...’

- Are they remarkable people?

‘Remarkable? Both of them are among the Eight Sword Masters of the Central Plains!’

There was truly nothing more to say.

‘...Ha!’

That was already incredible, but then one truly immense name caught my eye.

[Jeol Sim]

Just two characters.

Was there anyone in the Central Plains who did not know that name?

I knew that the Omnipotent Godly Doctor had treated many martial masters without distinguishing between justice and evil, but I had not known he had received an engraved plaque even from that person.

- Who is that?

‘...One of the Four Great Evildoers.’

Jeol Sim, the Murderous Fiend.

He was a great villain feared by everyone in the Central Plains.

Countless men, women, and children had died at his hands. He was such a dreadful monster that even crying children would fall silent upon hearing his name.

- He’s the final boss of connections.

That was exactly what I wanted to say.

With engraved plaques from the Eight Sword Masters of the Central Plains, said to have reached the realm beyond human limits, and the Four Great Evildoers, Bizarre Oddity’s engraved plaque could hardly seem like much of anything.

Unfortunately, they were on different levels.

Evil Heaven’s fingertips trembled slightly before his engraved plaque.

- It would be embarrassing to put it away now.

It was not that embarrassing.

Let us just call it taking a step back.
